Joseph Rykwert, a professor of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, has contributed to the body of work about architecture a wide-ranging study of the use of the human figure in the discipline, particularly in columns. Rykwert plunges deep into architectural history, tracing the development of the classic orders from Greece to Rome and on through the Renaissance in France and Italy. He says the relationship between the human body and architecture is "deeply ingrained in all recorded architectural thinking." He especially sees a close tie between the body and the column, the essential building block of architectural order.

Joseph Rykwert is one of the major architectural historians of this century, whose full humanistic understanding of architecture and its historical significance is unrivaled. The Dancing Column is certain to be his most controversial and challenging work to date. A decade in preparation, it is a deeply erudite, clearly written, and wide-ranging deconstruction of the system of column and beam known as the "orders of architecture," tracing the powerful and persistent analogy between columns and/or buildings and the human body.

The body-column metaphor is as old as architectural thought, informing the works of Vitruvius, Alberti, and many later writers; but The Dancing Column is the first comprehensive treatment to do this huge subject full justice. It provides a new critical examination of the way the classical orders, which have dominated Western architecture for nearly three millennia, were first formulated. Rykwert opens with a review of their consequence for the leading architects of the twen tieth century, and then traces ideas related to them in accounts of sacred antiquity and in scientific doctrines of humor and character.

The body-column metaphor is traced in archaeological material from Egypt, Asia Minor, and the Levant, as well as from Greece, drawing on recent accounts by hi storians of Greek religion and society as well as the latest discoveries of archaeologists. Perhaps most important, Rykwert reexamines its significance for the formation of any theoretical view of architecture.

Chapters cover an astonishing breadth of material, including the notions of a set number and a proportional as well as an ornamental rule of the orders; the theological-philosophical interpretatio Christiana of antiquity on which the domination of the orders relied; the astrological and geometrical canon of the human figure; gender and column; the body as a constantly refashioned cultural product; the Greek temple building and the nature of cult; and the endurance of ornamental forms and the function of symbols.

we came to expect from Joseph Rykwert works of great erudition, which incessantly delve into their subject matter to uncover its deepest folds and hidden meanings...[perhaps a "deconstruction" without the fancy of that attribute], and this work is no exception to this. This is a thick investigation into the meanings of the column, and from that into the associations of body and building, into the meanings of classical architecture. For the erudite, a pleasure; for the professional, a necessary though at times difficult read. Not a coffee table book, though...amateurs beware.

I would say this coloring book would be for someone in their teens or an adult, as there are some intricate designs in it.

The artist does have a little difficulty getting her male models well-proportioned--and quite a few of them came off looking as if their legs were too short for their bodies.

However, the women are very attractively drawn and their fashions, are very well done, beautiful and intricate. While the men themselves were sometimes not as well drawn, their fashions were well done and interesting.

My only complaint is that this artist has a tendency to want to do some of her designs on the clothes in dotted lines, rather then solid lines--and I found that made it difficult to determine the actual outline of the design and color it correctly.

Chinese Fashions Color Book.......2007-04-17

This is a beautiful coloring book that adults will enjoy as much as children. Ming-Ju Sun does very detailed and delicate renditions. The finished product is frameable, it's so beautiful.

Unfortunately, the paper is not thick enough to use watercolors or color pens, but a good quality pencil -- or water color pencil does a great job.

This is one of the high quality Dover Publishing color books that are educational as well as fun.

Good presentation of Dahl-Wolfe's Photography.......2003-07-28

Louise Dahl-Wolfe shot some captivating images, as evidenced by the cover, and apparently was one of the best fashion photographers of the middle 20th C. The book contains 2 essays which kind of overlap in content and some plates of her B&W and color work, as well as outtakes, and some reportage work. The printing quality was okay, with the exception that a lot of the color photographs were scanned from either the printing plates (or more likely) magazines because they had visible dot pattern. I don't know if the original color images had faded beyond repair, were lost, or, the authors may have made made an aesthetic/representation choice here. One essay described how Dahl-Wolfe was very exacting with the printing presses and perhaps the printed images best represented her vision, however, for me the dot artifacts detracted from the pictures, which were quite excellent. It is easy to see why Dahl-Wolfe is regarded as an early master of color fashion photography. Worth picking up on overstock if interested in fashion or fashion photography.

An informative and enjoyable history of Mercury Asset Mgmt........2002-01-01

This is a splendid book. Not only does it give an easy-to-read history of Mercury Asset Management of the UK up to its acquisition by Merrill Lynch, it also gives additional insights into the life of Siegmund Warburg (detailed in Ron Chernow's "The Warburgs") and represents a vivid insider's account of any business, told by Peter Stormonth Darling, chairman of Mercury from 1979 to 1992.

If you have read other investment management company histories such as Diana Henriques's "Fidelity's World" or Robert Slater's "The Vanguard Experiment", this book should be on your reading list as yet another view. Mercury, though not well known in the US, had something like US$180 billion under management at the time of its acquisition by Merrill Lynch, certainly not a small amount in the asset management league tables worldwide. Though Mr. Stormonth Darling is admittedly not an investment practitioner himself, he does appear to have a keen insight into people and the view from the top of the organization.

The book lays bare the importance of personnel (and their happiness) to the success of companies such as Mercury and Warburgs, and discusses at some length possible reasons why Warburgs was sold at very little premium to Swiss Bank in 1995, while Mercury was sold to Merrill Lynch at twice its prevailing market value in 1997.

It's also interesting to reflect that Mercury was at the top of its game in 1997, as a leading fund manager in Britain, yet it still sold out to a large foreign firm, as many leading British financial firms have done in recent years. I hope that the individual British personnel of these foreign masters, whether Continental European, American, or Asian, strive to maintain their intellectual independence as time goes on. The investing public continues to need alternative viewpoints on investments, such as that expressed by Andrew Smithers (also once part of Mercury) and Stephen Wright in their 2000 book "Valuing Wall Street".

Please do give "City Cinderella" a read, and enjoy Mr. Stormonth Darling's delicious follow-up details such as (p. 89) "...at last report [said person] was living in Panama with his fourth wife and their poodle, Chanel."
