5 out of 5 stars Hartford's fascinating history.......2003-06-29

"Domesticating the Street" tells the story of the city of Hartford as it developed in the 19th century from a Yankee, homogenous place to a bustling, highly diverse, challenging salad bowl of immigrants working hard to survive and come to terms with their new world. The book reveals the story of the prostitutes who had claimed an area not far from the Old State House; and the "newsies," immigrant children who sold newspapers in flagrant disregard for Yankee strictures about domesticity, care of children, family structure, or mingling with strangers. It's a great book, one of the few about Hartford that is in print. It was thoroughly researched, nicely cited, and is a mainstay for classes and individuals studying the history of one of America's oldest towns.

        Book Description

In less than two years since our first Urban Spaces volume went to press, hundreds of excellent urban spaces have been completed, and hundreds more proposed. The universal appeal of spaces where people can gather continues to generate new parks, plazas, lobbies, atriums, and malls. Both public and private clients are investing in creative urban spaces.

The Urban Land Institute has again cooperated with Visual Reference Publications to cosponsor this second volume showcasing urban spaces created by leading architects, landscape architects, urban designers, and planners. John Morris Dixon, FAIA, longtime Chief Editor of Progressive Architecture, will explain the design challenges and accomplishments of these outstanding projects.

As you travel through these superbly printed color pages, you will gather invaluable insights in the planning and design of such public spaces as the Civic Plaza in Phoenix, Gantry State Park in New York, and Paseo del Alamo in San Antonio. You will visit public facilities such as the Orlando International Airport and the Long Beach Convention Center in California; retail environments such as the Galleria at Roseville in California and the Park Meadows Retail Resort in Colorado; business complexes such as the 3M Headquarters in Mexico, Sears 2000 in Chicago, and the Conde Nast Building in New York; new in-town communities such as CityPlace in West Palm Beach, Florida and Atlantic Station in Atlanta, Georgia; planned communities such as Narragansett Landing in Rhode Island, the Lake at Las Vegas in Nevada, and Middleton Hills in Wisconsin. Going abroad, you will explore Scienceland in Shanghai, Cavendish Square in Cape Town, and Warringah Mall in Sydney.

Urban Spaces No. 2 will be an invaluable reference for clients, public officials, building committees, and professionals who are responsible for the planning, design, and construction of urban developments of all kinds.

            Description:
During a fixed-route including (i) surface walk on streets, (ii) underground spaces (corridors, vestibules and platforms) and (iii) underground trains of the Prague Metro Rail System (PMRS) a fast response portable photometer was used to measure concentrations of PM"1"0 (particulate matter <10@mm). On the basis of more than 100 monitored trips the PMRS may be characterised as more polluted than the streets above. On average, the highest PM"1"0 concentration was recorded inside the Metro trains (113.7 and 1.44), the second highest in the underground spaces of stations (102.7 and 1.29), followed by outdoor environment (74.3 and 0.85), expressed in @mgm^-^3 and in dimensionless relative normalised units, respectively. In spite of the statistically significant difference (p <0.001) between ambient and underground PM"1"0 levels recorded by the photometer, the ambient concentrations were tightly associated with those from the underground spaces (r^2=0.820) as well as from the Metro trains (r^2=0.774). The correlation between concentrations from both underground microenvironments was even higher (r^2=0.964) indicating a common source of aerosol inside the PMRS. Since also reasonable correlation was found between fixed site monitors (FSM) and both ambient and underground photometer PM"1"0 levels a strong influence of surface traffic-related particulate pollution on the underground air quality is suggested.

                    Book Description

A Cleveland standby has gotten a makeover.

Since 1993, this colorful coffee-table photography book has been a standard gift used by Clevelanders who love to show off their city to out-of-towners.

Now, a new edition brings it up to date with the city's latest landmarks and refurbished highlights.

Photographer Jonathan Wayne updated several of the 102 photographs each time his book was reprinted during the past nine years, to keep pace with the changing city. Out went the old—like the Browns, in 1995; Municipal Stadium; and the Cleveland Ballet. In came the new—Jacobs Field, the Rock Hall, the Great Lakes Science Center, the new Browns, the Cleveland Botanical Garden's Hershey Children's Garden, and others.

Wayne also added photographs in response to customer requests. Most often requested: a photo of the renowned Cleveland Orchestra performing at Severence Hall (added in this new edition). The book's most recent addition is the striking Frank Gehry-designed Peter B. Lewis Building, which opened in October, 2002.

Now, enough changes have accumulated to warrant the publication of a new edition. More than a quarter of the book's photos are different from the first printing. The book's new cover reflects the current shape of Cleveland's skyline (including the new Carl B. Stokes U.S. Courthouse). And the notes section was carefully updated with factual details about each place photographed.

Especially popular with business travelers (in part because of its compact size), Cleveland: A Portrait of the City has been taken as a gift to countries on all seven continents—including Antarctica, in 2001.

                              Book Description

Economy, society, and environment comprise the three main dimensions of sustainable development but too often they are considered separately. This book, by comparison, examines the interaction of the three dimensions in the context of rural systems, embracing a wide range of topics, including globalisation and reregulation in sustainable food production, conservation and sustainability, the development of sustainable rural communities, and sustainable rural-urban interaction. An international team of geographers, drawn from the International Geographical Union's Commission on The Sustainability of Rural Systems, summarises the basis of unsustainable rural development in these topics, the remedial policies being pursued, and their own evaluations of the policies. Rather than deal just with generalisations, their analyses are illustrated by detailed case studies drawn from a variety of rural systems in both developed and developing countries.

The deregulation, increasing regionalization, and keen competition that have characterized the banking industry in recent years have made this a challenging period for bank managers and directors alike. Today, more than ever, directors need a readable, comprehensive reference, not only for their day-to-day responsibilities, but also to guide them through the unprecedented changes that are transforming the financial services industry. The information and insights in The Bank Director's Handbook enable board members to take the active, responsible role that promotes a bank's success.

                                    Book Description

Advice from Peggy Noonan:"The most moving thing in a speech is its logic. It's not the flowery words or flourishes, it's not the sentimental exhortations, it's never the faux poetry we're all subjected to these days. It's the logic behind your case. A good case well argued and well said is inherently moving. It shows respect for the brains of the listeners. There is an implicit compliment in it. It shows you're a serious person and understand that you are talking to other serious people.

No speech should last more than 20 minutes. Why? Because Ronald Reagan said so. Reagan used to say that no one wants to sit in an audience in respectful silence for longer than that, if that. He knew 20 minutes was more than enough time to say the biggest, most important thing in the world. The Gettysburg Address went five minutes, the Sermon on the Mount probably the same.

Some communications professionals will tell you there are specific gestures to use when you make a speech, particular ways to move your hands or use your voice. I do not think this counsel helpful. Be yourself in your presentation, because although there have already been Vince Lombardis and Dan Rathers and Jesse Jacksons, there has never been a you before. So you might as well be you and have a good time. Authenticity isn't just half the battle, it's a real achievement."

4 out of 5 stars The Basics: Presented Well.......2006-05-01

Better know today as a conservative columnist for the Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan also has a very strong pedigree as a political speech-writer for George H. Bush and Ronald Reagan.

In Simply Speaking she outlines very simply and coherently the basic rules of good speech writing and communication. As with most of the good books written on speech writing you are not likely to find major new insights. You will however find the key elements she addresses well illustrated with relevant speeches - many of which, by the way, she helped draft e.g. George H. Bush's acceptance speech at the Republican convention 1988 and Ronald Reagan's fortieth anniversary D-Day speech at Pointe du Hoc. Noonan goes through the speeches in detail, helping the reader to better appreciate the context and genesis for the respective speeches.

                                    Noonan suggestions include:
A speech should never be more than twenty minutes.
                                    Write the text out.
                                    Humor is essential.
Sentences should be short and simple.

The book is a bit limited in that the author constantly returns to Reagan and his oratorical style but other speeches that Noonan quotes in a worthwhile book include Christopher Reeve's speech at the 1996 Democratic convention, John F Kennedy's Inaugural, Bill Clinton's Inaugural - which she pans and Mother Teresa's speech at the National Prayer Breakfast which reads well, but it was this amazing nun's presence and credibility which truly impacted the room.

I return to this book reasonably often because it is interesting and hits the key points for a speaker. But, the book could benefit from a good checklist and summary of key points. Noonan also shows her political colors too much in a book about speech writing. The reader doesn't need to know about her palpable disdain for the Clintons, a disdain which colors her judgment on the former President's communication ability which is often exceptional.

However, Simply Speaking is a good book for the budding speechwriter and speechmaker: a worthwhile and interesting refresher for the experienced speaker.

I love reading Peggy Noonan's WSJ column; so let's get that out of the way right now. Peggy generally writes in a stream-of-consciousness form that I like. It captures my attention from the first sentence and holds me to the end. But not this book. After a page or two I noticed I was skipping ahead, looking for the bait and the hook. It's not there. That's Writing 101. She knows that! What I suspect is this: Her publisher contracted with her for a give-back linked to something else, and she wasnt interested in the project. It shows!

The book was cheaper than in the store, was shipped the same day as ordered, and arrived in new condition (it was new!) so I am well pleased.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Be a "Great Communicator".......2005-03-17

Written by former presidential speechwriter, Peggy Noonan, On Speaking Well will teach you how to write and deliver effective speeches. Although much can be learned from this book, I hesitate to recommend it to political neophytes, because Noonan's fallback theory on politics is that you should just "be yourself." Obviously I agree -- who wants to vote for a phony? But inexperienced readers might misconstrue this to mean they don't have to study how to win -- and that would be a shame for them. As Mrs. Noonan points out, even President Reagan made it a point to spend time learning how to be a "Great Communicator."

1 out of 5 stars I actually tried to rely on this book for a presentation..........2004-01-29

I couldn't beleive how bad this book is. Not really a presentation on how to speak well, but full of recollections of her career-long speaking days. There was nothing useful in this book, except if you want to hear her reflections on talking her grades up with the professors in college back in the '60's. A complete waste of time and money.

I have read and frequently use David Greengerg's "Simply Speaking - The No Sweat Way to Prepare and Deliver Presentations." As the former president of Buckhead Toastmasters and The Advanced Toastmasters of Atlanta, I can personally attest to the effectiveness of David's book for helping people of all skill levels, to quickly and easily improve their public speaking effectiveness.

The book is organized into simple-to-follow and easy-to-apply sections, without a lot of overhead and complicated material. In addition, the tips in the "bonus" section (compiled from some of the world's most successful speakers) are invaluable for any number of speaking situations.

I heartily recommend David's book. Every speaker, or speaker-to-be, should have a copy on his or her bookshelf!

                                          Book Description

In this book you will find the simplicity of words written in the form of poetry with the intention of sharing life's situations and experiences with others, in hopes that it will help them along the way when they face similar circumstances. It helps knowing that you are not alone; this spiritual and inspirational poetry shares the love that God, our Father, and our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, has for all who will receive. Also, this book contains poems of everyday situations, showing the humor that can be found in life if taken in stride. As I am Simply Speaking from My Heart, it is my prayer that all who read the words contained in my poetry may find love, hope, comfort, inspiration-and a smile.

                                                  4 out of 5 stars good start.......2007-05-12

Good starting point for those who want to consider starting their own business. Slightly too academic.

5 out of 5 stars What I've Come to Expect from HBS Books.......2007-01-19

Although much of the material in this book can be found in other places and it's high level (as noted by a previous reviewer), the content is high quality and it's helpful to see it pulled together in one place. As a serial entrepreneur, I often rely on HBS publications. While some tend to be more academic than practical in nature, this book does a nice job balancing the two. It contains a lot of solid information based on academic research, yet places it into a context where it is useful to a practicing entrepreneur. If you are an entrepreneur seeking to start or grow a venture, this book is worth a read and is likely to provide a meaningful ROI.

4 out of 5 stars Entrepreneur's Toolkit: Tools and Techniques .......2006-11-10

As I am finding with all of the Harvard Business Review series, this book is a high level overview that serves as a general guide or summary to the practice. I have seen all of this material in other books, and there is no innovative thought or fresh strategy offered. I gave it a high rating because it is great for someone that is just starting on this subject.

5 out of 5 stars Concise and covers many points in starting up a business.......2005-10-19

I am at the point to run the first round of non-founder funding for my 5-year-old start-up when I grabbed this book off the bookstore's shelf. The author clearly understood the process of building a business, and knows how to get outside investors interested in a start-up. One interesting viewpoint the author held was that VCs are the most expensive financial aid a start-up can find, and offered alternatives to getting VC's funding. In the end the author addresses ways an entrepreneur can be really paid off for the efforts invested, both by way of IPO and by non-IPO means. In general, I find this book very helpful to help one understand many faces of starting up.
