In November 2002, the Yale School of Architecture hosted the symposium "Eisenman/Krier: Two Ideologies," a two-day analysis—both celebratory and critical—of architects Peter Eisenman and Leon Krier. Eisenman, with an office in New York, and Krier, based in southern France, represent two opposing views in architecture: the modern and the classical. This dualism, which dates most explicitly to a face-off between the two architects during a meeting at Princeton University in 1977, continues to resonate within architectural design and theory today.

Published in this volume are the papers delivered at the conference, which focused on the themes of history, language, urbanism, and politics. The speakers included an exceptional array of historians and critics: Stan Allen of Princeton; Maurice Culot of the Institut Français d'Architecture, Paris; Kurt Forster of the Bauhaus University in Dessau; Phyllis Lambert of the Canadian Centre for Architecture; Joan Ockman and Mark Wigley of Columbia; Demetri Porphyrios and Vincent Scully of Yale; Robert Somol of the University of California, Los Angeles; Anthony Vidler of the Cooper Union; and Sarah Whiting of Harvard. Eisenman and Krier culminated the event with presentations that made evident their lifelong commitment to architectural language, to architectural scholarship, and to architecture itself as a vital element of society and culture.

`Two Ideologies' has been a welcome, if long overdue, debate between two of architecture's most disparate architects. I use the term `architect' lightly here, as both Peter Eisenman and Leon Krier tend more towards theory (or, in Eisenman's case, so-called theory), than to the practice of building itself. Although Eisenman has built several works, they cannot rightly be called architecture; rather they are built diagrams - and crude diagrams at that. It is an important distinction to make, and one which, unfortunately, is lost on Eisenman's followers who themselves tend to be susceptible students or young practitioners more impressed by notoriety than by architectural sophistication. Krier too is not without his faults. While he must at least be credited with a respect for history, he is perhaps too inclined to replicate it fastidiously. This has obvious limitations, but evolution of architectural constructs within an overall continuum is at least a framework in which discussion is possible. On the other hand, Eisenman, (in the time-honored, cliched manner of a self-proclaimed avant-gardiste), openly rejects history, notwithstanding that he does not seem to understand it in the first place. Nor does he maintain an effective grasp on philosophy or theory, although he manhandles the vocabulary of both as though he does. This does not matter a jot to his followers because they do not comprehend it either, and thus, an unfortunate and pretentious posturing is allowed to regenerate it self in a pitiable way.

So the promised debate never really materializes. A learned professor encounters a baboon in the academic jungle. But not speaking a common language or sharing a cultural background, meaningful communication is not possible. Krier speaks English but proposes a stage set. Eisenman fumbles with a more unaccountable vocabulary and counters with loutish and alien sculptures. Sheepishly, he wonders if he has fooled anyone in the audience.

The editor, Cynthia Davidson, does her best to mitigate her husband Peter's sillier proclamations. However, her editorial bias (or was it her indoctrination), limits any opportunity for incisive commentary. But in allowing the debate to happen at all enabled us to see what a sham contemporary architectural conjecture really is. We should be thankful to them for that.

I found lots of patterns in this book. Great! However, all the pictures are in black and white and are taken from her other books. She tells us which OTHER books contain the instructions. In other words, buy "Baltimore Beauties and Beyond". You will get much more out of it.

Baltimore Album Applique Quilt Block Patterns.......2005-08-03

This is the second book of STRICTLY Baltimore Album Applique Quilt Blocks, sized for 12 inch squares. (if you want larger squares you would have to enlarge the well defined blocks) There are about 6 pages of color displaying variations of the same and similiar simple blocks shown in the body of the book. Most of the blocks in this book are contemporary designed blocks from students of the author. However there are some complicated floral basket designs from historical Baltimore Album Quilts as well. This book is only for the experienced applique quilter who is familiar with Baltimore album Quilts - since it is primarily only patterns to choose from in making your own quilt. This book will not teach you how to make a quilt, nor how to applique etc as only earlier books by this author contain these instruction. Since I have all the authors books, I found this a delight to add to my collection.

Portico, S.A., of Costa Rica, has confronted those challenges by adopting sustainable forest management (SFM) as a means to obtain a stable supply of high quality logs that it can use to manufacture high-end residential mahogany doors and accommodate increasingly stringent controls on the use of commercial forests. This booklet contains the history of logging practices in Costa Rica as well as Portico's market and strategic decisions.

The real estate industry has been severely affected by recent developments in international capital markets. There has been a decline in real estate investment trust (REIT) share prices, and a decline in capital available for real estate ventures. These setbacks have coincided with serious financial problems of very large hedge funds and other institutional investors in the market for commercial mortgage-backed securities.
This volume collects the revised papers first presented at a conference hosted by New York University's Salomon Center on the impact of globalization on real estate business cycles. To this end, the conference offered new insights into the implications of U.S. and global real estate cycles on real estate securities including REITs and mortgage-backed securities as well as direct real estate investment. The most important insight is that the amplitude and frequency of the cycles differ from place to place and time to time. To the extent that this implies that real estate markets around the world are not yet fully integrated, there are opportunities for global investors. There are also risks; the markets are becoming more correlated, most particularly in periods of crisis. Indeed, the relative immaturity of the Thai real estate market contributed significantly to the extent and severity of the Asian financial crisis of 1997. To exploit these opportunities and to manage the resulting risk, portfolio managers need to develop new data sources and empirical procedures designed to maximize the information content of the data that is available. The lack of high quality data emerges as the central and most pressing issue, not only from a portfolio management context, but also from the standpoint of public policy.

It is common practice in many empirical studies in finance to exclude financial services firms from the samples used in different stages of the analysis. In this paper, we analyze the impact of this exclusion on common asset pricing tests by comparing the results using data both including and excluding financial sector firms in the countries with the largest financial sectors (the G7 countries plus the Netherlands and Switzerland) over the 1973-2000 period. We find that excluding financial service firms from empirical asset pricing tests can impact the corresponding inferences. It may influence both the identification of the number of risk factors found to be significant and the corresponding betas. For example, the estimated coefficients on some factors are significantly negative for the financials and significantly positive for many of the non-financials. We also show that, using a Fama-MacBeth (1973) test procedure, we fail to reject some models when financial firms are included in tests, but reject the same models when financials are excluded. Consequently we suggest researchers recognize the possible impact of the industry composition of the portfolios used in empirical studies.

Basic, but good.......2001-11-03

I personally would not suggest actually purchasing this book (. . .)For starters, it's a book about professional etiquette, but, at least in my copy, there are countless spelling/grammatical errors. Kind of counter-productive to the purpose of this book, I would say. Although, if you're willing to overlook such things, it does give lots of concise, useful information that will save you a trip to a one of those career counselors. Some of this might not be new to you if you're a "veteran" of the workforce, but for newcomers, or relative newcomers to the process, it is useful.

This book has precious little to do with etiquette. It focuses rather on career advice--and nothing terribly worthwhile there either.

Philosophical Essays.......2005-03-11

This book does one basic job and it does it well. It shows how to think about 10 areas of life that are essential to being happily successful in both work and personal achievement. If you think about these areas this way and behave in accordance with this philosophy, you increase your probabilities of accomplishment, contentment, health and prosperity.

This is a book of philosophical essays. The authors don't use stories, motivational anecdotes, how-to's or lists of resources for further study to accomplish their goals. (Although they include short quotations and examples.) However, you don't have to be an intellectual to read this. It is clear, simple and understandable to an average high school student. And the philosophies can be easily applied. Just be aware that the authors do not hold you by the hand and tell you the possible applications. They do not attempt to entertain you, but simply challenge you to think more effectively about important issues. They offer no cheerleading to spark your enthusiasm, but rather a rationale for thinking of issues in particular ways.

To enjoy this book, you have to appreciate the simple, unadorned imparting of wisdom.
