Book Description
This book provides a fascinating look at the unique home and creative genius of Henry Chapman Mercer. In 1908, renowned tile maker Henry Chapman Mercer, a key figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement in the U.S., turned his genius and artistic talents to planning and constructing Fonthill, a "castle in concrete." Fonthill served as Mercer's residence and a personal museum for his decorative tiles, prints and artifacts from 1912 until he died in 1930. More than 100 pages of text, abundant photography, and previously unpublished illustrations, sketches and comments from Mercer's own construction notebook, give readers a wonderful appreciation for Fonthill and Henry Mercer. Twenty color photographs (of 56 total) combine with architectural cross sections for each level of Fonthill to highlight the innovative design, artistic detail and decorative tile work that comprise this American architectural treasure. This book shows why Fonthill, one of the best late-Romantic buildings in America, has been designated a National Historic Landmark and featured on television in an award-winning episode of "America's Castles."

Fonthill: The Home Of Henry Chapman Mercer is very highly recommended reading for architectural students and anyone with an interest in American architectural history and the National Historic Landmark series.
Fonthill A Must Read and A Must Visit.......2000-11-15
I have visited Fonthill Museum many, many times and finally there is a book that does this fantastic place justice. The color photographs and the floorplans alone are worth the price of the book. Fonthill is a unique artistic expression of a relatively unkown renaissance man, Henry Chapman Mercer. As the book describes, despite its random apperance from the exterior and interior, the house is built with a great deal of thought, intent, and philosophy. If you love tiles, architecture, archaeology, the Arts & Crafts Movement, and history, then this book is a must read, and Fonthill is a must visit!
Fascinating book, fascinating home.......2000-11-05
This comprehensive book beautifully illustrates an extraordinary home built by Henry Mercer in Doylestown, PA. The color photographs give the reader a glimpse of this tiled concrete castle. What a fascinating book about a fascinating home!

Book Description
Ecological economics is a hot topic today as an alternative to 'neo-classical' environmental economics. It seeks to 'socially construct' a political economics that will deal with environmental problems and make the individual more visible in economic analysis. A leading authority in the field describes the principles, strategies and instruments of social change from the point of view of key players -- governmental agencies, business corporations, environmental and religious organizations and universities -- and underlines their responsibilities in the market economy.
This critical text in the search for an interdisciplinary economics that facilitates social and environmental development offers a pluralistic and democratic approach to addressing environmental problems and balances the priorities of economic growth and international competitiveness with environmental sustainability. It emphasizes the need to articulate ideologies, worldviews, ethics and related scientific perspectives as part of economics.
This illuminating account of the theories and means that will bring us closer to a sustainable society considers tools such as environmental impact assessment (EIA) and describes success indicators such as environmental labeling and environmental management systems (EMS). It highlights strategies and policies that facilitate social change and sets out future agendas for the individual actors in political economics.

Ecocentric Political Theory.......2007-07-02
A good primer for environmental political thought. Eckersley does an admirable job of bringing the political theory of Habermas and others to environmental political theory. However, it seems that the ecocentrism of Eckersley leaves little room for real political conflict.
Eckersley eventually makes no secret that her ecopolitics is a state-centered one. She has little hope for the potential of the environmental movement relying on the influence of localized and devolved battles, each to be fought in smaller locales. Her fears of the potential of democracy and deliberation, in addition to the problems of distributive justice and equity are among her concerns with devolution, not to mention a perceived fear of a race to the bottom.
Her approach favors an ecosocialist bent, although her version would include granting moral consideration of the biosphere as an equal player whilst addressing the problems of society and of the human condition.
Eckersley takes the politics out of green political theory. Her ideal is a strong eco-socialist state with stratified layers of hierarchy. But it is in these very spaces between levels of government where politics will most likely make an appearance.

Swedish-English Dictionary.......2006-08-21
As a dictionary it is very comprehensive - my biggest problem with it there is no English-Swedish it is just a one way dictionary and therefore not as useful as it could have been
Prisma's Swedish-English Dictionary-A Great Investment.......2000-12-16
The first time I saw this book was when I decided to buy it,being that there is a great lack of useful Swedish Dictionaries published in the English language. However, when I received this dictionary it well out-did itself. Not only does it have a section on Swedish pronunciation, noun endings, and other grammatical features at the beginning, it gives numerous phrases and other helpful words associated with most every word you look up. Beware, that if you think this book is Swedish-English, English-Swedish (as I mistakingly did), you're in for a surprise. However, if you do decide to buy the complement edition to this book-the English-Swedish version-you are once again in for a treat, as it presents the same quality as this book, only for English-Swedish translations.
This really was a great investment, and I urge anyone interested in the Swedish language to pick this (as well as the companion volume) up, along with either Routledge's Comprehensive Swedish Grammar (if you're really serious), Routledge's Essential Swedish Grammar (if you're just interested or need a small review)in addition to a good Swedish course (Colloquial Swedish-with the cassettes of course-is a good beginner's course).

A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-12-18
This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.
I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.
My favorite chapters were:
1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business' structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need
The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.
I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.
Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.
I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.
When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!
