Book Description

A wonderous portfolio that has to be seen to be savored-or even believed for that matter. Here are the plans for the Tower of Pisa-on a skewed drafting table, the Eiffel Tower tipped over across from the Seine, the ruins of a McDonald's stand following some future Vesuvius, the disastrous meeting of the Great and Lesser Walls of China, and many other gems.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful daydream material.......2003-01-11

This is an excellent book for lazy afternoons devoted to daydreaming. Every illustration is a wonderful "what if...?" scenario depicting an architectural acievement gone awry. Macaulay also has a particular love for dreaming up very peculiar applications of vinyl siding- that part does get a little tedious, but this book is definitely worth a look. When I first looked at this book several years ago, I was too young to get many of the jokes, but I just pulled it out again today- what a great surprise!

5 out of 5 stars Great book; no library should be without it........1999-04-17

I came upon this book in my search for history of architecture in general. Though I expected something entirely different, I was immediately caught in the book's charm. The illustrations are clever and their sarcasm unbeatable. A book to look at, time and time again.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent tongue-in-cheek Architectural Entertainment.......1998-06-04

I always find the author's work entertaining and informative. True, while Great Moments in Architecture is not as factual as some of his works, the sketches are beguiling, and the humor strikes a particularly concordant note with individuals involved in architectural careers.

Buy it and get a good chuckle out of it!

1 out of 5 stars No one should bother with this book.......1996-10-31

I waited with great expectation for "Great Moments in Architecture" to arrive, hoping it would be in the style of the other highly successful books by David MacCaulay on Pyramids, ships, etc. These other books provide something for all ages: detailed drawings on how things work for children and sophisticated studies of engineering and architecture for adults. Unfortunately, Great Moments is a satirical look at great objects of aechitecture. The cover shows L'Arc de Triumph upside down and called Arc de Defeat. The remainder of the book only gets worse. The problem is the work is totally confusing for children who are trying to learn the true nature of the world while being boringly crude for adults. However, I suppose if you would like an expensive and not funny Architectural Far Side, maybe this would provide some brief enjoyment

Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, a Swiss-born Frenchman better known as Le Corbusier, may well have been the 20th century's greatest architect. He was also a capable painter, a brilliant theoretician and polemicist, and a terrible city planner. This book does not offer the usual analysis of Le Corbusier's work or his place in history; rather, it is the result of the interaction between Corbu and René Burri, a young Magnum photographer who documented a bit of the architect's life and a few of his buildings between 1955 and his death in 1965.

It's a human story as much as an architectural one, giving clues about how Corbu lived, worked, and related to people in his later years, and how people lived in and used his buildings. This is a wide-ranging work of photojournalism that stands up well decades after its inception. It also provides a look at seven of the designer's structures, including landmarks such as Villa Savoye, the Ronchamp Chapel, La Tourette monastery, and the Unité d'Habitation in Marseilles.

This large, horizontal-format book of 184 pages contains hundreds of photos, mostly black-and-white, and they give people as much prominence as the structures, bringing the architect, his clients, their buildings, and the buildings' occupants to life in a way that conventional architecture tomes do not. A fascinating, one-of-a-kind book that forms a valuable supplement to the standard works on Le Corbusier, it should appeal equally to those interested in documentary photography, architecture, and major cultural figures. --John Pastier

          Book Description

From an early age Peter Simon has delighted in documenting the world around him through photography. Here is his lifes work thus far, an astonishing record of the far-ranging experiences of his generation, featuring many of the major figures, both in the mainstream and counter-culture, of the past 40 years.

          Customer Reviews:

          5 out of 5 stars A Sharp Eye Indeed.......2007-03-23

At first glance, one would think that Peter Simon's book, I and Eye, is a coffee table-style, picture book. But one need only open it to find out differently. This book is an autobiography--with a really good picture album.

I had the privilege of meeting Peter Simon. He's friendly, laid back, and so open about himself you like him right away. Peter's honesty about himself, the good and the bad, was awe-inspiring. By the time he finished, I felt like we were old friends.

I and Eye is so much more than just a picture book. Through its pages, we see a life lived, with its joys--and its sorrows. Because Peter's camera was such a ubiquitous presence throughout his life--from his pre-teen years on--viewing I and Eye is like looking through an album of one person's memories. As a bonus, we get to see some of Peter's father's work (His father, Richard Simon was an avid photographer in his own right and co-founder of Simon and Schuster.) and get a glimpse of his childhood that we would otherwise not be able to see. Taken in toto, the book captures a life.

There are introductions by Carly Simon (yes, she's his sister), David Silver, Stephen Davis, and Richard North Patterson. Every one of them gives testament to the openness and honesty Peter has with people.

Technically, I and Eye is the work of a consummate photographer. Peter's specialty, to use a trite phrase, is the candid shot. Even his posed shots have a spontaneity that makes them seem candid. Some of his portraits are powerful. Some are precious. All provoke strong emotions. Peter's landscapes incorporate a love for the places he captures, a majority of them on his beloved Cape Cod. This book is a must for anyone who calls him or herself a photographer and aspires to do great things with a camera.

Take time with this book. Find a comfortable spot, relax, and allow its pages to carry you through the life of a warm, interesting, and talented man. You'll find the trip worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars If You Remember the '60's..........2002-05-29

It's been said that if you remember the '60's you probably weren't really there. It's a good thing Peter had a camera because he probably would have been wondering himself what those days were like. Parts of his world, beautifully recorded, jar our memories. Whether these memories are painful or delightful, they are part of our collective story. Many '60's communes didn't allow photographs, so these may be rarer than one assumes. The book is worth looking at and reading.

1 out of 5 stars Uninspired photographs and more boomer self aggrandizement.......2002-03-06

I wanted to like this book, I really did, but I couldn't get past the amateurish tone as Simon retreads that well trod path that amounts to the sixties generation stations of the cross--wealthy childhood, discovering drugs and sex at college, dropping out and living off your parents on a commune, plugging into Eastern philosophies and, finally, capitalizing on "the good old days". I found the photographs mundane and the essays almost unbearable as Simon chronicles his constant drug taking and drifting from place to place. As another reviewer wrote, I don't think we would have seen this book printed if not for his name and his celebrity sister.

4 out of 5 stars Makes me wish I was born a few years earlier.......2002-02-25

Peter Simon is a talented photojournalist, and this book is the story of his life, with a definite emphasis on the 60's and early 70's counterculture years, which he lived to the fullest. It's all here: the protests, living on a commune, the eastern spiritual gurus, flirtations with nudism, the (impressive) series of hippy girlfriends, the rock stars (he's Carly Simon's brother).

I'm sure other members of his generation will find the book very nostalgic. As for me, it's almost enough to make we wish I'd been born 10 or 15 years sooner. I went to college during the early years of the Reagan administration. The 60's obviously weren't a very happy time, but it would be hard to imagine someone of my generation putting out a book like this: who would care?

The later chapters of the book are an odd lot of whatever he was shooting during those years of his life. Therefore we have some baseball coverage, some photos of landscapes and his celebrity friends on Martha's Vineyard and some coverage of Woodstock 1999. I'd judge these chapters as substantially less interesting than the early ones.

One thing this book does illustrate is the importance of connections in getting a book of photography published. I'm not saying it's not a worthy project: it certainly is. But a lot of worthy projects are never published, and it's hard to believe his sister's celebrity and his family's connections in the publishing industry ("Simon" is the "Simon" in "Simon & Schuster") weren't key factors, especially for a virtually unknown photographer.

          5 out of 5 stars A Titillating Journey.......2002-01-20

Ah! From the intricacies of Tree Frog Farm to the open arms of MV's shores, the reader is webbed into every fiber of Peter's life through his descriptive words and vivid photographs - so much so, that he leaves you with a dream of being one of the free spirits on the beaches of Martha's Vineyard.Thank you, Peter, for the journey!

Although Erwin Blumenfeld would no doubt have emphatically denied it, his autobiography might be seen as an example of the trajectory of an artistic life brutally fashioned by the vicissitudes of 20th-century European history. Born in 1896 into a bourgeois Berlin Jewish family, he served in the German army during World War I, was linked to the Berlin dada coterie, and was interned in France in World War II, all before finally immigrating to America and finding eventual acclaim as one of this century's great photographers. Such a bald summary actually does this book a disservice. Avoiding the self-justifications and stage-managed chronologies of the typical autobiography, Blumenfeld's story is a witty and linguistically exuberant delight, abounding in puns and narrative passages that rival the work of many professional writers.

Eye to I is merciless in its treatment of the author himself--chance and accident guide Blumenfeld far more than heroics or judgment, to which his account of the series of brutal internments in French concentration camps attests. But then again, it is precisely this attitude that helps him survive: the 20th century was not made for the rational, and Blumenfeld's irony and ridicule is perversely a mark of the utmost sanity. Berlin dada, only fleetingly mentioned, must have helped hone these weapons--the only ones that an artist like him could wield. Blumenfeld proved himself as quirky and original a prose writer as he was a photographer; this beautifully translated book with its too-brief selection of extraordinary images (including an astonishing 1933 photomontage of Hitler) is a marvelous testament to a life and to art vigorously and joyously made. --Burhan Tufail, Amazon.co.uk

          Book Description

The life of Erwin Blumenfeld, one of the century's best-known photographers, was by no means conventional. By turns acerbic, self-mocking, playful, even absurd, his autobiography is a compelling, virtuoso account of an extraordinary man. All his subjects--his Jewish family, the Germans, the Vichy French, his models, New York publishers--are dealt equal measures of wit, mockery, and merciless irony. He spares himself least of all. Born in turn-of-the-century Berlin, Blumenfeld was drafted to serve in the First World War, first as an ambulance driver (although he couldn't drive) and then as a bookkeeper in a field brothel, and he was awarded the Iron Cross for giving his sergeant French lessons. Between the wars he was part of an avant-garde circle that included such artists as Else Lasker-Schler, George Grosz, and members of the Dada movement. During the Second World War, Blumenfeld was interned in a series of French camps but eventually arrived in New York, where he found work with Vogue and Harper's Bazaar, producing many of their most memorable covers and becoming fashion's highest-paid photographer. From the creator of some of the most striking and influential photographs ever taken, Blumenfeld's autobiography--published here in English for the first time--is a biting and iconoclastic take on the century, and the insightful, gripping story of an exceptional life.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully fun reading.......2006-09-02

I really enjoyed the puns and wordplay in "Eye to I," as well as relishing the first-person story of World War I, the interwar years, and World War II. I would have preferred two things, one of which future editions could change, one of which is pretty much fixed, since Blumenfeld has died. First, I wish my edition had translations of all the foreign language phrases, mostly French, that are sprinkled throughout the book. I felt like I was missing a significant portion of the humor of the book by not knowing French. Second, I would have enjoyed more content about actual photography. Subtitled "The Life of a Photographer," that led me to believe there would be more about taking photographs. Even so, those are minor quibbles. Fascinating life and one well worth reading about!

5 out of 5 stars Lively, humerous, surprising.......1999-08-12

Coming across "Eye To I" feels like a blast of fresh air. Erwin Blumenfeld, renowned as a fashion photographer of the 40th and 50th, gives us a merciless picture of what it takes to reach the top as an artist during the first half of the 20th century. With ferocious humor he settles his accounts with a world of pretense, prejudice and hypocrisy.

5 out of 5 stars Eye to I really got to me. Fantastic!.......1999-07-26

I simply loved this tale of our century. It's witty, iconoclastic, trenchant, hilarious, improbable all at the same time. The reviews I have read are, as usual bizarre: They miss the excellence of the translation, the breadth of Blumenfeld's vision, the fact that you can't put it down once you start & that it is simply a brilliant read. The author's recollections of his childhood in Berlin are simply astounding. His descriptions of WWI are full of th most incredible horror. His efforts to find himself in Amsterdam are hilarious. His rise in the world of fashion photography first in Paris and thn in New York bring us right into the middle of th 20th Century madness. For Blumenfeld's narrative is of a world gone mad. And who can deny that it has?

                Book Description

The need for increased food production, enhanced economic growth and poverty reduction , while at the same time achieving environmental sustainability, is an issue of growing importance. This book addresses the linkages and tradeoffs involved in solving such key challenges. Some of the approaches taken are conceptual and theoretical, while others report on specific empirical cases in which linked economic, biophysical and policy models have been used to generate analytical (often quantitative) estimates of tradeoffs. Other approaches highlight institutional and policy issues involved in trying to achieve multiple social goals simultaneously. Empirical applications to areas throughout the developing world are included.

I did get one soundbite that I hope I can use in my life from this book, "Be yourself, unless you're a jerk". However, I got so tired of: be nice, have integrity, be an example, on page after page I was only able to make it through half of the book. All of that is important, but they covered that quite well in kindergarten. If you pick it up to read on the plane bring a backup book; you will need it.

1 out of 5 stars No startling revelations.......2002-11-13

This book is dull and does not unravel anything that the average person who can rise to the top cannot derive on its own - if you are just graduating from college, this may seem appropriate, if you've been around in the business world - seek other material. One reading suggestion, which is light and very simple, but a good reminder of what's required is the book by Lencioni: " The 5 temptations of a CEO" - worth an hour while waiting at the airport between flights.

3 out of 5 stars Management Theory Lite.......2002-06-28

The book presents itself as a semi-scholarly work, synthesizing interviews with 100 CEOs into a meaninful set of commandats for those that want to act like the big boss. On an academic level, this is fraught with peril - How do we know these are the right CEOs, and do they really articulate what makes them succeed?

Business books have a history of weak scholarship (think In Search of Excellence) but still can contain great ideas.

The 10 less than profound results:
                      1 - Be Yourself, Unless You're a Jerk
                      2 - See Around Corners
3 - Make Dust or Eat Dust
4 - Make the Big Play
                      5 - Keep Good Company
6 - Be the Number One Fund Raiser and Protecter
7 - Act Like a CEO When You Don't Feel Like It
                      8 - Evangelize the World
9 - Go Big or Go Home
10 - Cut Through the Junk

All this is good advice, but did you need to ask 100 CEOs to come up with it?

Ultimately, the book resides in my restroom. It's good for a couple minutes a day of reminding me what I should be doing, but nothing that requires hours of in depth study. It's a light read, but not really the blueprint to the executive suite.

                        Book Description

Advice about starting a business never sounded like this! Beginning with ""must be crazy,"" serial entrepreneur and angel investor Barry Moltz offers the true insider's scoop on new business start-ups. With doses of irreverence and humor, the return-to-basics guide focuses on what comes before the bottom line. Addressing passion-the ultimate entrepreneurial fuel-relationships, failure, and authenticity, Moltz incorporates stories from his entrepreneurial colleagues and shows what it takes to integrate personal and professional life to achieve the highest satisfaction.

Moltz describes the ups and downs and emotional trials of running a start-up business and invites readers to let go of the myths and expectations that can hamstring them emoitionally while getting their businesses up and running. In a helpful, heartfelt, and often humorous way, Moltz reassures entrepreneurs that they are not alone-whatever their form of craziness-and that they can retain self-worth and sanity as they ride the start-up roller coaster.

Showcasing the varieties of new venture craziness, entrepreneurs at all ages and stages in their business-building processes will realize they too can succeed. Jolts of passionate entrepreneurial wisdom energize these anecdotes, with such ideas as:

                        * People-not capital-are the true currency.

                        * Passion keeps everything going.

                        * Relationships and authenticity are the drivers in this business climate.

                        * There is no perfect idea and no magic bullet.

                        * Don't expect your path to be a straight line.

Incorporating lessons from the boom and bust 1990s, the realignment of business and personal values in the wake of terrorism, and proven ways to nurture the human dimension in business, these are voices to help all business owners find and trust their own entrepreneurial passions. After all, says the author, ""The worst they can do is eat you!""

4 out of 5 stars You have to be crazy to enjoy this book.......2007-10-20

I have started three companies and there are still many days that I find myself wondering if I am nuts to be an entrepreneur. This book is entertaining and reminds me that, yes I am certifiably nuts, like most other entrepreneurs. Very little "how to", but very easy to relate to for an experienced entrepreneur (for instance, the sections on the emotional roller-coaster ride of starting up or partnering, or the little Buddhist sayings that get you through the tough days). If you are about to start a your first business this is a good primer, but its sort of like reading books about being a parent before you have your first child - you really won`t appreciate most of it until much later on.

5 out of 5 stars Do you want real-world insight into what you will experience as an entrepreneur?.......2007-05-13

This is a one-of-a-kind book that provides an emotional look into the world of the entrepreneur. The book delivers key insights into how to approach certain situations, but more importantly it delves into the trials and tribulations of being an entrepreneur like no other book available. For current entrepreneurs, Barry's book reads like a conversation with a businessess confident who has experienced exactly what you are currently going through and what you have experienced as an entrepreneur. For anyone considering the start of a new business, this is the only book I have found that can prepare you for the emotional roller coaster that you may encounter. This is a must for any business book library.

4 out of 5 stars Good-humored guide to business start-ups.......2007-01-24

Author Barry J. Moltz is not a brilliant business strategist. He does not intend to propose a set of holy rules that, if followed, will ensure that your new enterprise is a roaring success. Indeed, one of his primary messages is that new businesses fail so routinely that only someone crazy would consider opening one. If that's you, think of Moltz as a revered mentor who has successfully negotiated several start-ups of his own, and has volunteered to talk to you about what opening your own business will entail. He discusses the character traits you need to make a successful go of things, how to deal with partners and employees, and the best ways to win customers and clients. While Moltz scatter-shots his concepts and points, we endorse his good-humored book, nevertheless, as a worthwhile guide. It offers numerous valuable lessons from a seasoned veteran on what starting a new business really entails. Consider yourself warned.

5 out of 5 stars It's Not Crazy to Love This Book.......2006-06-07

Would it be valuable if you could sit down with a friend and listen to him as he described being an entrepreneur in great detail? What if he introduced you to other people who had been through similar experiences? How about if he described the emotional rollercoaster of starting, nurturing and then selling your business? Would this be important information?

If you have answered "yes" to any of these questions, you should read, You Need to Be a Little Crazy by Barry Moltz.

Barry's book is like having a conversation with a friend. The reader experiences the emotions that come with risking everything to control your own destiny.

This is not a check list book that offers theoretical advice. It's written the way the entrepreneur lives life - by the seat of his pants. The value comes from actually feeling what it's like to be in the middle of the uncertainty associated with the entrepreneurial lifestyle.

I find that the best learning comes from listening to other people and trying to put myself in their shoes. I like to think about what decisions I would make when they describe the problems that arise. I think about the potential impact of the decisions and how I would feel as I make them. "Crazy" gives you the opportunity to do just that.
