Not Just for Cinephiles.......2007-08-23

This book is a must-have for movie buffs, but I was bowled over by the beauty of the art. From the spectacular Batiste Madelena cover of Rudolph Valentino through dozens of creative renditions of original old-time movie posters, to the back cover depictions of Gloria Swanson, Norma Shearer, Walter Huston and Boris Karloff, the artistry of these unsung craftsmen is dazzling. "Now Playing" is now prominently displayed on the coffee table in our living room.

This is a beautifully illustrated book if you are at all interested in old movie posters and the people who created some of them.

I bought this book as a gift for my "theatre minded son. He is also an artist and a performer himself so I thought he would enjoy the book. I have looked at it and I found it interesting and well put together both physically and literally.

Movie Art-Almost Forgotten.......2007-07-12

I will start my review by disclosing that my father is an artist in the book. I do believe that anyone interested in movie history agree with me.

Jane Powell, Lori Berthelsen and Anthony Slide should be so proud of this book.They worked on this project several years with a tremendous amount of dedication and determination. Their work resulted in one of the finest movie books I have seen. This is history, showing the original lobby art of a few of the many movie artists years ago. The authors managed somehow to locate the posters that remain,for that I am grateful. This book
will bring back many memories and create a great amount of conversation.

Spectacular.......2007-06-30

This is a spectacular book! One of a kind. It contains the art and the history of a bygone movie era, when movie theaters employed their own artists to capture the magic of the silver screen. The quality of the sumptuous poster art is amazing--you'll want to frame these pictures. You'll also want to buy several more copies to give as gifts.

One of my best books.......2007-09-11

I use all my art books when I paint and this is one of the best. Yes, I am a professional artist, in that I get paid for my art. I think that people who think they can learn to paint from just one book will never be satisfied. It takes a lifetime to perfect any art and watercolor is one of the hardest. This book, along with books by Tony Couch can be the beginning of a serious collection of helpful reference books that you will get out every time you tackle a new painting. A good buy!

Although the book provides some useful information about color, composition, and difficult subjects, the author's premise throughout the book--that if you follow her advice, you will make beautiful paintings--is misleading. The book shows "problem" paintings followed by "solution" paintings. Unfortunately, many of the "problem" painting are purposely painted to look they were done by a 12 year old, while the "solution" paintings are painted by talented artists. Simply following the author's advice will not change the problem paintings into works of art. It would have been helpful if the author HAD demonstrated just what it is that separates amatuerish paintings from good ones. Her book doesn't do that.

Mr. Wiseman, a professional artist, includes 101 solutions for various situations that the watercolorist typical finds, such as how to paint in monochrome, painting clouds, buildings, how to compose your painting. Mr. Wiseman's own watercolor style is loose and very British--simple strokes that convey much information, and a limited, subdued palette. If this is your style, or you are a beginner, I think this is a wonderful book to add to your watercolor library.

I agree with everything in the above review. I was very impressed with this book that I got from the library, and now want a copy of my own. I liked it because there are different artists works used to demonstrate their different techniques and what colors they use and mix and how they plan their painting, where they start a wash and how they ad to it. Its a great book. I'm a beginner in watercolor. This book stands out from others I've been reading.

Great advice of choosing the right color for every project.......2001-04-30

This is a wonderful book that helps you learn to mix watercolor effectively to achieve stunning results. The artwork used throughout is beautiful and inspirational.

The book is broken into four sections including still lives, landscapes, florals, and wildlife. There are twelve projects in all, three per section and each project is taught by a different watercolor artist. This is a wonderful approach to learning from a variety of methods rather than forcing a single style on the student.

Individual techniques are demonstrated in step-by-step progressions. These including things like shaping objects with color, pouring luminous washes, floating colors on damp paper, and mixing intense or bright colors. The artists' own thoughts and theories behind their techniques are well explained in the text.

There are mini biographies of all the artists in the back with contact information. The emphasis on the color mixing process and the variety of examples makes this a most valuable reference in the watercolor artist's library.
