                Book Description

A single photographic print may be "news", a "portrait," "art," or, "documentary," or any of these, all of them, or none. Among the tools of social science graphs, statistics, maps, and text documentation by photograph now is assuming place.

                Dorothea Lange, 1940

The photographs in Wendel White's Small Towns, Black Lives are the kinds of hybrids Lange described and anticipated in her statement. The exhibition and book form a personal album revealing the layers of meaning and history that he carefully uncovered. His project to document African American communities in southern New Jersey began in much the same way that many photographers before him had set out to record a place or people.

Neither stridently documentary nor self-consciously arty, White's images straddle two worlds. They adopt the cool reserve of certain recent fine art photographers - Lewis Baltz, for example. Yet he is also true to the sincere lens of many of photography's great documentarians—such as Lange or Jacob Riis, who documented the horrid slum conditions in New York's Lower East Side or Lewis Hine, who took part in the influential Farm Security Administration documentary project from 1937 to 1942. White has produced a body of work that is uniquely personal and profoundly informative. His photographs thoughtfully ask us to look without preconceptions at the history he has uncovered.

5 out of 5 stars Thought Evoking and Visually Stunning.......2003-02-21

I found Small Towns, Black Lives to be visually stunning, historically intriguing and extremely thought evoking. This book invites the reader to discover, vicariously through an artist's personal journey and experience, black communities in Southern New Jersey. The beautifully captivating black and white photographs of people, buildings and meaningful landscapes are juxtaposed with thoughtful and informative text, which discreetly reveals these small communities to the reader. The photographs also appear to hint at volumes of dormant historical facts and information that has been unearthed and gathered by Wendel A. White. Both photographs and text provide a glimpse into the lives of a community that otherwise may have been overlooked. The essays in the book provide unique points of view from highly regarded educators, writers and artists as well as "food-for-thought" for the reader. The essays also provide supplementary resources of history and understanding in conjunction with what Wendel A. White has revealed of Small Towns, Black Lives.

I highly recommend Small Towns, Black Lives and urge that it be placed in classrooms, on coffee tables, and anyplace else where people can sit back and enjoy what unfolds from page to page.

5 out of 5 stars A Significant and Beautiful Work.......2003-02-20

Wendel White's _Small Towns, Black Lives_ is a significant and beautiful
                book.

It is significant because White has revealed a little-known fact of
American life: that African-Americans occupied private places not easily
found on maps and, further, he has exposed the success of those lives in
those places. The work is filled with incredible photographs of black
schoolteachers, barbers, funeral directors and farmers who built their
own homes, gardened their land, sold their produce, raised their
families and taught their children. They did all of this in small towns
generally unnoticed by the larger society. A metaphoric example is
telling. On page 97, White has photographed a tiny cemetery headstone
covered with brush, fence posts and the flotsam of an uncaring society.
On the next page, after the abandoned cemetery has been cleared, White
again photographs the tiny headstone only, this time, it stands
surviving and dignified. White has uncovered black lives which, seen
through his eyes, stand revealed as surviving and incredibly dignified
                in their simplicities.

The work is beautiful because of the stark power of his vision of how a
photograph and text can be united in reflecting the lives of those he
portrays. Struggling to express both the present state and the historic
subtext of these places and these lives, Wendel White fuses text and
picture into a whole thing. White, whose career as a photographer is
long and varied, has found that digital art has opened new
possibilities. Each print of this text has been carefully and thoroughly
shaped in digital media so that subtlety of black and white tones
underpin the subjects of the picture itself. For me, the photographs of
the old, segregated schools and abandoned black churches speak volumes
of the textures of the lives that learned and worshipped in those
places. They reveal the beauty of what survives and the sadness of what
we have all lost in their passing.

As I said, this is a significant and beautiful work; it touches all of
us and, in doing that, preserves what was almost lost.

                      Book Description

This report, prepared by the Commission on Development and Environment for Amazonia at the initiative of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty and supported by the Inter-American Development Bank and the United Nations Development Programme, is based on the concept of an Amazonia that exists above and beyond the world of fantasy and myth: an Amazonia of flesh and blood, of human toil, of human history, of human faces and hopes, and future human beings. It is an analysis based not only on the experiences and technologies of today''s world but also, and with greater emphasis, on the wisdom accumulated for centuries by Amazonia itself: standing Amazonia.

The Amazon region has the largest area of tropical forest on the planet, and concern for its environmental deterioration extends well beyond the borders of the eight countries that form a part of it. With support from the IDB and UNDP, the Commission on Development and Environment for Amazonia prepared this report that provides data on the region's natural resources, population, health and infrastructure.

This was truly a life-changing book for me when I read it 25-30 years ago. Up til then I had thought of myself as a kind of Bohemian, more interested in the arts and "higher things" than anything like business. At the time I was a penniless freelance writer, working in a library job that bored me. I was attracted to the book by the Renaissance Italy theme, but what I found was quite a revelation.
The Medici engaged in some of the same sorts of sophisticated financial transactions that people use today -- including currency arbitrage and venture capital. But since the objects of the transactions were very concrete, physical things (coins, precious stones, etc.), it's easy to get a good understanding of what they were doing. That's how I got interested in business, and ultimately into a career as a corporate lawyer and venture capitalist.

I also learned that many of the familiar masterpieces of Renaissance painting in museums around the world had been commissioned by branch managers of the Medici Bank. When the Medici found out that one of their managers had commissioned a painting, they figured his head had gotten too big, and they fired him. Very entertaining history!

                                                  Book Description

In todays business world there are two kinds of executives the Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner. For most executives today, the Coyote has become the prevailing metaphor, as they rely more on conventional and outdated resources. This doesnt have to be the case, as Bell and Harari show entrepreneurs how to hit the road running with speed and adaptability to harsh conditions.

Everyone is familiar with the age-old cartoon battles between Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner--how the determined but hapless Coyote plots and plans to capture the elusive bird, but never achieves his long-term goal. According to the authors, these classic cartoons offer a powerful metaphor for business managers today who are seeking marketplace victories in the decades ahead. The lesson is that those organizations that emulate the Road Runner will prevail; those who act like Coyote will fail. The truth is, the vast majority of business executives and managers today are a lot more like Wile E. Coyote than like the Road Runner. Coyotes do have admirable traits; they are persistent, focused, hungry for results, and they keep their eye on their target. But that's simply not enough in today's--and tomorrow's--highly competitive business world. Coyotes have to learn how to stop relying upon conventional and outdated resources (like the Acme Manufacturing Company) and learn how to rule the road like the Road Runner does, with instant speed and an extraordinary adaptability to harsh conditions. Bell and Harari offer numerous examples of today's business types who have become Road Runners in their industries and offer advice on becoming the "chased" in business as opposed to being the "chaser."

I bought the book because the co author Oren Harari is brillant. I could not finish the book. I'm one of those people who can't read a book and watch tv at the same time. The constant references to the coyote, road runner and acme was like having a loud tv on. I could not concentrate after two chapters I retired the book to the scrap heap. I really wanted to send it back to Chip and tell him to edit out some of the interference because I believe he and Oren had something to say.

The Road Runner cartoons are classic. Most of us grew up laughing out loud as Wile E. Coyote encountered one challenge after another in his attempts to capture the Road Runner. The scenarios were simple. The coyote devised ways to capture lunch, never winning the competition. His tools, all products of Acme Company, backfired on him. He caused himself a great deal of difficulty, while the Road Runner went on with his life, practically oblivious to the coyote's campaign.

At the start of their book, Bell and Harari note that coyotes can run 30 miles per hour and road runners can't really fly and can only run 16 miles per hour. Wile E. Coyote has an endless arsenal of gadgets to trap the road runner, all provided by his single supplier, Acme. He's a master planner, yet continually fails . . . of his own volition. What's the problem here? Why is the Road Runner so successful? Because he's operating under different rules. The coyote may be seen as chained to conventional wisdom, doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. A bureaucrat. The Road Runner is more like the agile entrepreneur, competing with a whole different paradigm.

The authors take this familiar cartoon and turn it into an instructive business case. Their objective is to help us become road runners among coyotes. In page after page, they pull lessons from the cartoons that we probably all missed as kids, comparing the characters and their motivations and their results. "Wile E. Coyote is preoccupied, earnest, conniving, and grim. The Road Runner is joyful, light, and free. Wile E. does nothing but go from pursuing one meal to the next, with perpetual frustration; the bird is gleefully living life to the fullest. The results are the same: Wile E. somehow manages to dig himself into the hole of failure, while the Road Runner strides on, undeterred and unaffected by life's bumps and obstacles."

Can you imagine the authors conducting their research for this book?

As we move through the book, we learn more about the comparative principles and how to succeed in the Age of the Road Runner. Familiar names populate the pages as we are provided with examples of companies and people. A "Tail Feathers" feature spotlights ordinary people doing extraordinary things-as Road Runners. The stories are inspirational, as well as educational. "Bird Seed" sections furnish the reader with solid advice that fits the concept, but it not linked to the two main characters.

Descriptive summaries of Road Runner cartoon incidents are liberally sprinkled throughout the book, keeping the reader laughing and smiling and wondering in amazement how the coyote could keep going in this futile struggle. And therein lies the tale of this book. To survive in a Road Runner Age, you cannot continue to operate like a coyote. The book is filled with current wisdom, but just as important, it's a fun book to read. People learn more when they're laughing, so expect to gain a lot from Beep! Beep!

                                                  4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-09-07

Wile E. Coyote hovers in a hot air balloon over the road, waiting to drop an anvil on the unsuspecting Road Runner. Wile E. puts a grenade in the seat of a toy airplane and ... you know what happens. He becomes the victim of his own diabolical plans. The Road Runner wins every time. Chip R. Bell and Oren Harari’s book turns a cartoon classic into a wonderful metaphor for today’s fast-paced work environment. Organizations are changing their cunning competitive ways. Instead of behaving like Wile E. Coyote, they are becoming like the quick, agile, joyful Road Runner. In an amusing style, the authors illustrate their points with cartoons of the famous duo and plenty of plot scenarios and interesting tidbits of trivia. The “Birdseed” sections scatter tips to help you and your company make the transition to the wide-open desert of opportunity ahead. Those who grew up with Road Runner will relate to this book immediately. We ...recommend this book to Road Runner’s business fans or to anyone who wants to have fun while learning how to steer a company through the speedy new marketplace.

In Beep! Beep!, Bell and Harari provide the reader with an entertaining look at business practice and culture today. In highlighting the behavior and actions of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, the authors provide a compare and contrast view of all facets of business and a unique perspective on how to be more competitive. The message is simple and clear, capturing the spirit of what it takes to compete in the fast-paced, global marketplace. (The book's preface is: "Road Runners don't have prefaces...they just begin!") Although the boxes which describe actual scenes from the Road Runner cartoons get a bit redundant as the book moves along, the "Birdseed" and "Tail Feathers" sections that summarize most of the chapters were appropriate and welcome. All-in-all, Beep! Beep! is a worthwhile read. It can easily be consumed in an average plane ride (as I did).

The book is an enjoyable and delighting reading. While it does not make many original contributions, it does illustrate and organize many principles well. The use of the Roadrunner as its symbol is an excellent vehicle. The parallels drawn seem appropirate and not stretched. With the same evangelical zeal of other business writers, Bell and Harari commuicate their feelings effectively. The use of media, in this case a cartoon, to illustrate principles is a valuable format. As increasing numbers of people are 'programmed' on animated media in contrast to written media, the use of contemporary media is quite effective. The book, origianlly published in 2000, will have to be evaluated in time. In the same way Tom Peters' 'Excellent Companies' were reviewed for performance. It was interesting to note that the authors cited Lucent Technologies and Iridium as prime examples of 'Working on Borrowed Brains.' All told, the book will contribute buzzwords to our lexicon.
