Book Description

"This is the only book to show you how to approach the design and construction of a home that's affordable, durable, environmentally sound, well-sited, beautiful, and, above all, specifically tailored to your needs."
--Michael J. Crosbie, Senior Editor, Architecture magazine (from the Foreword).

A uniquely personal, state-of-the-art guide to designing and building a home, Homing Instinct considers not only the roof, but the sky ... not only the placement of plumbing, but where the first light of dawn will enter the building ... not just ease of maintenance, but your home's impact on the planet.

Written by leading architect John Connell, founder of Yestermorrow Design/Build School, this richly detailed, forward-thinking book can help you create a house that perfectly expresses who you are physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The only book available that expertly combines both design and construction how-tos, Homing Instinct helps you: See how things really work, from foundation and framing, to plumbing and electricity, to selecting the right materials and products; Understand the latest construction options; Resolve questions of cost, durability, design, intent, and self-expression; Master architectural fundamentals and effective building techniques.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good high-level approach.......2000-07-26

The book presents a good high-level approach of the design/building process. Mr. Connell does a great job of presenting various alternatives of all aspects of designing and building your home, all the while taking great care in never restricting creativity. For those who are in need of an overall discussion the book aquits itself splendidly. If your purpose, however, is to dig deep in technical matters, then look elsewhere. Even Mr.Connell acknowledges the lack of micro-content, when in the final chapter (and I am paraphrasing) he writes that we cannot be done (the book that is), that there are many questions unanswered, like how to build stairs, and floors, and windows, and doors ... (you get the idea). Well, these questions remain unanswered, meaning you have to buy another book. In all fairness to Mr.Connell, I fully understand that a technical discussion of every house building aspect is beyond the scope of his book, but I just wish I could get more information on let us say, windows, other than design issues. Great starting book.

5 out of 5 stars most useful book so far for EVERY home owner.......1999-06-29

i'm in the process of building a second home for our family. at first, i was very afraid that going to an architect, an "expert" was going to be expensive and potentially frustrating - how could they know what i wanted, how could i know to trust that they were "that" good and wouldn't charge me an arm and a leg for some design-y house? this book provided the education - the vocabulary, the concepts, the rationale - that any non-architect needs. after reading its chapters, i feel more confident both in my own ability to find the right architect and building professionals, and that i really do want to work with an architect.

even if you aren't building a house, this book will help you understand the one you currently have. it gives you enough context so that, the next time you see a funny stain on the floor, you'll be able to better guess if its water or a present from the dog.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Comprehensive and Green!.......1999-04-26

Y2K might be topical, but "Homing Instinct"(McGraw Hill) is evergreen. Connell, founder of the Yestermorrow Design/Build School in Warren, Vermont recently updated the original book published by Time Warner in 1993 (see author's review). Yestermorrow students learn skills and philosophies necessary for designing or building a home. "Homing Instinct" is the next best thing to a month at building camp. Anyone planning to bypass architectural services can benefit from this conversational text with clear illustrations and imaginative chapter titles like: "A Window for Your Spririt, A Door for the Dance" or "Walls and Wallness". And don't skip the glossary. Someday a "Jeopardy!" title might hinge on mortise, kerf or zonohedra!

5 out of 5 stars Just One Builder's Opinion.......1999-04-13

As a residential designer and builder I read a lot of how-to books and this is the first and only one of its kind - informative as well as entertaining. I picked it up after dinner one evening and when I next looked up it was four in the morning! Homing Instinct seems to have it all - stick building, timber framing, log homes, straw bales....even geodesic domes. It covers the foundation work, the energy systems, plumbing, electrical and , best of all, gives loads of alternatives in every area. Connell writes in a very humorous way which is refreshingly different from so many techno-texts. And the illustrations by themselves are worth the price. I know it's just one guy's opinion, but I think this book is worth half a dozen of those others.

4 out of 5 stars Green Alternatives for Your Home!.......1999-04-12

Designing and building your own home is an exciting, albeit stressful undertaking. Designing and building a home in sync with a natural lifestyle makes the undertaking overwhelming. HOMING INSTINCT provides a detailed overview of the home planning, design, and construction process, but has several distinct advantages over the typical building book. It begins by detailing homebuilders' needs according to their values and lifestyles. Then, throughout the book, homebuilders are offered design and construction choices based on those needs. HOMING INSTINCT presents sustainable building and construction methods as well as conventional choices so homebuilders can make chocies each step of the way. The book is not only educational and comprehensive, more importantly, it makes the decisions associated with building a home effortless and deeply personal

        4 out of 5 stars A good Maya workbook.......2004-05-17

Ok, I don't know about the *best* Maya book out there, but I do know that Maya Illuminated: Games, is one of the best. If you're looking for subdivision surfaces or NURBS, look elsewhere, because they aren't covered here. What this book does cover is most of the tools involved with polygon modeling, polygon UV mapping, character rigging and weighting, and animation. The first two subjects will take you about 2/3 of the book, leaving the rigging and animation pretty sparse. However, those subjects are covered in great depth in other books. Many other books.

If you're looking for a hefty tome of reference information, this book is not it. The picture seemed to me to indicate a book about the size of most Maya reference books, but in reality, it's the size of a workbook, and was designed for class use, complete with short quizzes at the end of each chapter. The book is a good intro to game modeling, for people starting out in the software. People familiar with other software's tools and principles may find this book mostly review, with only a little new information introduced, apart from the differences in the toolsets.

A final note, you may want to consider getting it direct from Mesmer, too. It does tend to be a bit cheaper, although shipping isn't as fast or free. Teachers can get a Teaching Gamecraft book for free with an order as well.

5 out of 5 stars best Maya book I've read.......2003-07-19

This book is great. The Poly Toolset and UV Toolset sections are more comprehensive than the manuals, and demonstrate what each command does. The poly modeling stuff isn't just Poly Modeling 101, it teaches you to develop an approach that results in CLEAN low-poly models. The UV Mapping chapter is similar, not just how to unwrap UVs, but the right way to approach it for any model and lay out the texture info like a pro.

I got the first version, and just got the new one, updated for Maya 5. It's in full color!! And they added a bunch of rigging stuff and a chapter on weighting. Also the printing is way better (the quality on the first one was kind of poor).

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how to make game art with Maya. As other reviewers have commented, it isn't for absolute newbies, but being familiar with the interface or maybe having taken an intro Maya class is probably good enough to get started with it.

        1 out of 5 stars lacking information.......2003-03-13

I really regret purchasing this book. I thought that I was purchasing a great book that can't go wrong from reading other reviews. However, what I got was a book filled with information that can be found on other Maya books. You can easily purchase other Maya book and cut out all the Nurb section, and this book is what you get. I am very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars wanna learn how to use polygons? this is it!.......2001-12-20

this book is completely focused on learning how to use polygons. For ANYONE out there who wants to learn how to model polygons from scratch, this is it. This is the only book I know of that teaches only polygons.

It will then move on to teaching UV mapping for polygons. That is also very helpful.

A few notes to beginners. This book is meant for animators who already know how to use the Maya interface. It won't go much into where all the buttons are etc., so I suggest your familiarize yourself with Maya's interface first. If you decide not to, you might be doing some searching around to do the tuts. I can't make a very accurate guess with this because I already knew the interface before starting with this book.

Another thing is that it ends with rigging characters for games. I was expecting to learn how-to, only to find that it says that it expects you to know how to work with the basics of rigging. I haven't gone into that chapter yet, so I could be wrong about how hard it is as a beginner in rigging, but there is another book called Maya 2 Character Animation that goes over rigging techniques and teaches it in depth, from simple to complicated. For beginners like me with rigging, since rigging exercises are so hard to find online, maybe this book will be a very good buy to accompany Maya Illuminated.

Otherwise, this is an EXCELLENT resource book. It will teach you how to model polygons from scratch. The only thing you need to know as I said is the interface.

4 out of 5 stars Read the book, took the course.......2001-05-07

I took the mesmer course in Seattle that the book is based on. I have read a number of Maya books including Maya Complete, Learning Maya and Maya Character Animation, and although there are better books out there for general training in Maya, this is a must have if you are interested in designing and modelling characters for game content. I also found that I got more useful tips and general guidance in the basics of poly modelling in Maya from this courseware than in the other literature I've read. Definately should have this book on the shelf. (BTW other than the learning Maya crap you get from A/W this is also one of the few/only? books out there that is updated for Maya 3).

5 out of 5 stars Coulda Saved Me a Lot of Early Career Money!!.......2002-10-04

At age 24, with a degree in Finance and International Business and one year working for a major accounting firm in London, I came to Los Angeles with dreams of landing a financial position in the entertainment industry. Smart enough to know that THE FRONT DOOR was being used by everyone, I invested a couple grand with a career coaching firm that taught me how to get in THE BACK DOOR. Within a couple months, I met with 7 CFOs of the top studios and landed a job with MGM/UA. TOO BAD I didn't have Katharine Hansen's "A Foot In The Door" then!

Now, as a 15-year recruiting veteran, career coach, and careers author, I teach this backdoor method myself. For both beginners in the job market, or beginners to the idea of informational interviewing and backdoor job search (which many of my 40-50 year-old clients are), this is a great career manual. Katharine walks the uninitiated through the entire philosophy, psychology, and practical steps of non-lemming job finding--doing it differently. Since 80% of all jobs are filled BEFORE being advertised, the technique of tapping the "hidden job market" as Katharine describes is crucial to long-term career management. Plus, experts say we are moving away from the traditional "permanent job," so knowledge of formalized networking will be a REQUIRED SKILL in tomorrow's economy.

I did well in college because 4 months earlier I found a little book called "How to Make Straight A's in College by Beating the System". "A Foot In The Door" is the same type of book to read after college and before any career change...because this is about beating the job search system.

Thanks for spelling it all out Katharine!

3 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2002-06-18

Everything in here is good for the college grad. If you've done any networking before then you are past this book.

2 out of 5 stars Networking for College Grads.......2001-11-30

If you are just out of College, get this book otherwise forget it! Executive level positions need much more sophisticated book to be successful.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for job seekers and career changers..........2000-11-06

I'm a career counselor and I recommend this book all the time. Since most people who want to change or advance their careers know that they are "supposed" to network but aren't sure where to start, Katharine Hansen's book on career networking is very helpful because it provides so many concrete suggestions about what to do. Rather than hunting all over the Internet or reading a dozen different books, purchasing this guide is definitely worth the investment.

Interesting book with good insights- many of which you will also find in toher books, but here presented along with a history of their development within Disney.

The book is easy to read, and has something for all to learn.

5 out of 5 stars Dreaming Big is the First Step .......2005-11-27

Many books are produced by firms to act as sales tools for their products. This book falls into that category. Capodagli and Jackson present many personal success stories to show how their firm has saved companies. However, aside from this bias, this is a very good book for the times.

They have researched, as outsiders, the inner workings of Disney to glean the principles that have made Disney great. Disney is a great choice for a business model. Its repeat business and low turnover is its industry's gold standard. It has constantly advanced on many fronts from its inception, till Walt's death in 1966. Then the company slowly started to fall apart for two decades until it was revived by Michael Eisner (CEO) and Frank Wells (President) who in 1984 re-established the fundamental principles Walt had set in place.

Walt Disney put it this way, "I dream, I test my dreams against my beliefs, I dare to take risks and I execute my vision to make these dreams come true."

If you are desiring some extrapolation on the above statement and would like additional fresh observations of the authors, you will love this book. I especially enjoyed learning how Walt turned his whole company into a very-willing idea/dream machine, and how that he also realized that from the customer's perspective, every employee is the company.

May I also recommend The Experience Economy and Pour Your Heart Into It.

5 out of 5 stars Dream, Believe, Dare, Do!!.......2004-03-21

Those four simple words are at the root of the Disney business philosophy, established by Walt himself and carried on by Michael Eisner. I found this book to be both entertaining and informative. The business principles outlined by Capodagli and Jackson seem like simple, common sense - but bear repeating numerous times until more businesses adopt them. Principles like encouraging innovation and even failure, since you learn how *not* to do something...building on the strengths of your employees (development plans instead of demeaning performance appraisals) ... all will make any business work better. I found numerous ideas here that I will be applying in my workplace as well as to my personal life. This is a must-read for any manager who wants to motivate his or her team to really excel - and for any employee who wants to be his or her personal best.

In other words...kiss the guests A-- and treat them the way we show you in this book. As for employees just make sure they say yes to everything with a smile. Plain and simple. I actually worked for "house of the mouse" as we call it in Florida. Basically if you are not an enternainer (costumed mainly) you dont get treated as well. Your pay is almost in peanuts. Universal is NOT much different. At Disney WAY to many brown nosers and back stabbers. If you want a company like that then hey this is the book for you ;-)

                                  3 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?.......2003-07-25

In 30 words or less...vague. Not for those who want a real deep look inside the Disney company's way of doing business. This is a rock skipping across the water...
