Space is a matter of perception as well as reality, and this book addresses scale, balance and color as well as the space-saving tricks that turn a small apartment into a comfortable home. It offers advice on using vertical space, such as hanging pictures above a window, stacking bookshelves to the ceiling, and raising a bed to the height of a chest of drawers that fits underneath; converting closets into cupboard beds, storage areas into offices, porches into dining areas, and garages into family rooms; using color to pull spaces together visually; making furniture serve dual functions. Most of the interiors are tastefully expensive, though the same effects could probably be obtained on an Ikea budget. There's not much hard-core how-to in these pages, but a wealth of ideas. All in all, it's a pleasant designer's guide to making do with less space without skimping on comfort.
Book Description

Play tricks on the eye with mirrors, take some hints on cutting down the clutter, and lots more!

Small-Home Owners Rejoice!.......2006-12-19
This book has become one of my all-time favorites. The photos are beautiful and the book offers helpful advice on how to maximize space in a room without sacrificing style.
Even the tiniest of spaces provides an opportunity for storage, display or utility with no wasted space to spare.
If you are a small-home owner, as I am, this book should delight you. I've kept it handy and have referred to it on quite a few occasions to spark my creativity or stimulate ideas that I could (and still can) easily implement in my home. Unlike many other decorating books, this was a great read as well. I enjoyed it from cover-to-cover.
Renters, this book is geared more toward home owners so I would suggest seeking it out from a library to enjoy the ideas without spending the extra cash.
An Excellent Idea Sourcebook-- If You're Imaginative..........2001-02-02
My husband and I don't have a lot of money. We live in a one-bedroom apartment in Cincinnati. But if you're accustomed to making expensive ideas work for a miniscule budget, it's a perfect book. True, most of the designers featured in the book live in Manhattan (which is woefully expensive; those great apartments you see in movies or on TV are actually more in the price range of folks making near six figures), and some of the ideas really weren't my style, but if you do a little reading between the lines, you get good basic ideas on how to maximize your space.
Truth be told, not all of the ideas used were that expensive. Slipcovers for chairs and sofas abounded, old furniture was given new life with decorative painting. Remember two things as you go through the beautiful settings: 1) these were done by artistic designers and certainly a good portion of these things were done by hand as opposed to bought, and 2) gorgeous, tasteful items don't have to cost an arm and a leg if you look in the right places.
A waste of money.......2000-07-13
After reading the last review, I decided to look at this book in the bookstore before ordering. I'm glad I did, because I will NOT be ordering the book after all. What a waste. Nothing there. A bunch of pretty little pictures of places that don't relate to my home or life or "stuff" at all. And I live in a pricey suburb.
The best book on decorating small spaces.......2000-04-21
This is, by far, the best book I've found on decorating small spaces. I pick it up again and again, and it always inspires me. It illustrates different techniques you can use to create the illusion of more space, maximize space, or create a cozy space. Although the styles are expensive, many of the techniques can be used even with a small budget, i.e., using mirrors, patterned wallpaper, furniture you can see through, hanging curtains above window frames, etc.
A useful book only if you live in Tokyo or Manhattan.......2000-03-24
This book contains many stunning photos and presents a lot of intriguing ideas. But it also brings out the final question: If you can afford that much on design why not move to a bigger space? A more appropriate title would be: Decorating Small Spaces in Expensive Cities (where you are too tired to move).
Book Description
Do you have an ugly duckling kitchen? If so, take this book and learn how to transform it into the pretty and practical swan it was meant to be. Whether your kitchen is galley-shaped, U-shaped, L-shaped, or just plain small, this hands-on workbook offers ideas for kitchens that suit every lifestyle, from city singles to growing families.
The kitchen is the heart of every home: the place where we gather with our families and friends; where we prepare and share food; where we work, entertain, and eat. But many kitchens were not designed with all these functions in mind. As a result, they are too small, too dark, and too cramped -- when what we want is spacious, light, and comfortable.
With
Small Spaces Beautiful Kitchens, you can change all that. In its pages, you'll learn how to turn your kitchen -- no matter how small, how drab, how dysfunctional -- into the kitchen of your dreams.

Helpful advice and ideas.......2007-07-17
This book might be useful to more people than its title implies. The emphasis is on efficiency and small kitchens, but some of the kitchens in the book are not so small. Most of the advice will be helpful to anyone who is considering a kitchen renovation, regardless of the size of the room. Of course, a large kitchen gives one the option to create unused space that a small kitchen does not, so the book is especially helpful for people with space-limited kitchens. I use that term rather than "small" because the dimensions of my kitchen are largeish, but the layout of doors (all necessary) limits the cabinets and countertops in the room. I'm looking for creative ways to think about reconfiguring the space, and this book has been very helpful in terms of encouraging me to think about where to store things (items used less often can be outside the main kitchen space, for instance), what I typically do in the kitchen vs. sometimes do or rarely do, and how to plan a cohesive design style that works functionally and makes the kitchen a pleasant place for the cook. For example, I've been using wire shelving units as a temporary solution to my kitchen's lack of counters and storage space, but I wouldn't have considered this as a permanent design option before reading this book. That wouldn't be everyone's preference, but this book provides examples of several design styles to suit a variety of tastes. Other kitchen books provide more advice about the nitty-gritty of kitchen functions such as including enough electrical outlets, materials choices, etc. For that sort of information, I recommend "This Old House: Kitchens" (an oldie but still the best). To help you think about what you want and need in your kitchen in terms of function and visual appeal, especially if every inch counts or if the kitchen is part of another room, this book is a good investment.
small spaces, beautiful kitchens.......2007-05-12
I am pleased with this book. It has a lot of ideas for the kitchen that I would have never thought of. If you are undecided and can't figure out just what you want this is a good book. I'm very pleased.
Lovely design, useful tips.......2005-06-11
If you like contemporary, modern, eclectic, and retro styles, this book is great to look at. If not, borrow it from the library just for the text. I have made more practical moderations to my original ideas from this book than any of the dozens of other books and magazines that I own.
For instance, I originally was set on installing a microwave/range hood combination over our stove. This book points out that having a microwave in this position is inconvenient, even dangerous since it is very high up and over an area that is frequently hot. Also, it is difficult for children to reach. Instead, a built-in microwave shelf in a different location makes more sense. The suggestion may not be as space-saving as my original plan, but made sense nonetheless. This coming from a family of four with an 11'x 8' kitchen.
The photos presented an assortment of styles, sizes, and cost-ranges although it leaned more toward high-end, contemporary, and larger than my kitchen.
I would have liked to see more photos with large key ingredients like refrigerators. I would have preferred to see more floor plans and actual room dimensions. Unfortunately, I have not seen a book yet that was strong in this area. I think that any decorating book that has the word `small' on it's cover should strive to include those details.

Good Book to Stimulate Ideas.......2005-11-24
This book has a lot of really good ideas for small areas, including nooks and crannies. I was amazed at how you can decorate some really small areas, even though I don't have any nooks as small as some of them. It is a beautifully photographed book and doesn't seem to be afraid to use colors. I would say there are a variety of styles represented in the book, but it tends to lean more to the traditional with an occ. formal country look (florals, stripes, etc).
When I read a decor book I put tabs on pages that either gave me ideas or when I liked the rooms. Even though the book has good ideas, I only placed tabs on 8 pages.
I do think it is worth the price and I don't regret buying it. It had some innovative and great designs for small spaces.

Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected :o(.......2007-08-29
Honestly, I was SO excited for this book. I even pre-ordered before it was published. My fiance and I are renovating our 2-bedroom condo, and we needed some innovative ideas to get us motivated to start! We thought his book would be it but, alas, it was not. First of all, it's paperback (which bothered me, but I could deal) but more importantly, it's SMALL. A book that's banking on it's photos should be a coffee-table size, not merely larger than a handbook. The "tips" that the book features (only about every 10 pages or so) are pretty lame. They are common-sense things like "putting a mirror up will create the illusion of a bigger space" (duh!).
I'm sure SOME people would benefit from the photos of the loft-type city apartments. Most of the photos are of spaces that are extremely "odd" (low-hanging ceilings, miniscule kitchens) which is not our situation with our condo. So this is primarily why I can't give this book a good review. But if you're looking for glossy (yet small!) photo examples of how to renovate a very unique loft-type space, then this book MIGHT help.
Book Description

But House Beautiful has great-looking, creative approaches for making these tricky areas work, because every square inch counts when you're trying to keep things organized and comfortable. Photo after magnificent photo showcases different kinds of spaces and solutions. Learn how to use color and lighting effectively. Implement clever storage ideas. Create the illusion of space with floor and window treatments. Think about flexible furniture that folds up and stows away when it's not needed. Make Better Use of Your Space.......2006-04-01
Even if you have lots of space, there are some ideas to make better use of it. I love the ideas for tucking storage into unexpected places. Find new space by making use of an awkward alcove or breaking into the attic to make living space.
Decorating ideas for making the space seem not-so-small include slimmer furniture pieces and making color change the feel of the space.

Relationships.......2000-11-18
Two ancient civilisations, contemporaneous, both growing along the banks of rivers which flow down from mountains, through desert. Both rivers support crocodiles and both people worship river gods and crocodiles and worship cows and have a wonderfully developed cosmogony. Both have a form of caste system. Both have contributed immensely to world culture in almost every field. Surely they must have interacted despite the vast geographical distances involved. There is evidence to suggest contact between the two from around BCE 3000 with the findings of Indian muslin, cotton and dhania (coriander) in Egypt. We are on firmer ground from about the third century BCE. During the time of Ptolemy Euergetes an Indian sailor was found shipwrecked on the coast of the Red Sea. He was taken to Alexandria where, in exchange for hospitality, he agreed to show the Ptolemy's men a direct sea route to India across the Indian Ocean. Thus began a most profitable period of contact between these two nations. A short while later the discovery of the Monsoon winds and how they could aid sailing lent more impetus to trade and further contact from the African side. Indians and Arabs had been using these winds to advantage for a long time. During Emperor Ashok's reign ambassadors were exchanged. Contact continued until Egypt came under Roman Law. After a short hiatus renewed ventures were undertaken now bigger and powerful markets of Rome clamouring for goods. Although trade was the reason for exchange many ideas that influnced each other's art and iconography also passed back and forth. Egyptian scholars went as traders and proselytisers. Did Indian indeas influence Egyptian mosque minarets? Did Egyptian art assist in the development of Indian drama and music?
There is a large body of evidence which documents the close relatioships between these two countries. There has always been evidence to suggest indirect means of contact between these two; the book sets out to show a direct one. The authors have brought together eminent scholars to write about this contact . The book is a wonderful read for a lay person and a great guide to the history student or one wanting to pursue a more detailed examination of this fascinating exchange. The book is generouly illustrated and each chapter gives a well outlined reference guide.

There is now key empirical evidence of the power of economic instruments in managing the environment. This volume, the companion to Environmental Valuation, presents the results of a three-year collaborative effort involving research institutions in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America, coordinated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Authoritative case studies demonstrate the diversity of environmental problems to which a variety of economic instruments can be applied - air and water pollution, packaging, deforestation, over-grazing, wildlife. They also show what is needed for them to work successfully and the pitfalls to avoid in introducing them, providing valuable guidance for future applications.
Written to be accessible to non-economists, this book offers unrivalled source material for students and academic economists as well as for professionals working with economic instruments.

Book Description
This volume presents an approach to the evaluation of economic policies through the econometric modeling of aggregate consumer behavior. While the preferences of individual consumers are revealed by their market choices, these preferences can be recovered only by econometric methods, not through the index numbers used in the official statistics. The richer and more robust methodology presented in this volume provides a fruitful point of departure for future policy evaluations.
The econometric approach replaces ordinal measures of individual welfare that cannot be compared among individuals with cardinal measures that can. These are combined into an indicator of social welfare that reflects principles of horizontal and vertical equity. This approach unifies the measurement of poverty, inequality, and cost and standard of living. It extends the scope of normative economics to a broader range of issues in the evaluation of economic and social policies.

Book Description
Climate change brings about a new set of major economic risks arising from changing weather patterns, extreme weather events and rising sea levels. Those most at risk are developing countries, who, despite considerable post-disaster donor aid, have been bearing the major brunt of disaster-related losses. One adaptation solution that is rapidly gaining support of countries and international donors is a risk transfer to the global reinsurance and capital markets.
This volume, a special issue of the journal Climate Policy, explores the role that insurance-based mechanisms can play in helping these countries to prepare for climate change. It offers a unique and comprehensive perspective on the potential role of insurance solutions in global adaptation to climate change.

Description:
This paper focuses on a case study of financing a project of an integrated nuclear desalination system at la Skhira site in Tunisia. More specifically, it shows the financial characteristics of this project, known as TUNDESAL, the main financing mechanisms that can be used, and the principal actions required to attract the potential investors and lenders. The paper describes the basic requirements for the deployment of nuclear energy in a developing or an emerging country, with no previous experience of nuclear power; the specific financial considerations corresponding to the particular characteristics of nuclear desalination projects: high capital costs, high level of risks and uncertainties related in particular to long construction lead times and social and environmental concerns; the main risks of these projects; the profitability study of the TUNDESAL project: application of the discounted cash flow analysis; the main financing sources for the project; the financing schemes that can be used for project implementation and comparison between these schemes in terms of benefits generated, after covering project costs and repayment of lenders and investors; the main actions to be done for making the project financially attractive in order to gain the confidence of investors and international financial institutions (optimal allocation of project risks and uncertainties, a suitable and flexible energy and water tariffs policy, etc.). The analysis has shown that in particular conditions of Tunisia, the most attractive financial scheme could be the ''project financing + leasing''.

Book Description
Most community financing schemes have evolved in the context of severe economic constraints, political instability, and lack of good governance. Usually government taxation capacity is weak, formal mechanisms of social protection for vulnerable populations absent, and government oversight of the informal health sector lacking. In this context of extreme public sector failure, community involvement in the financing of health care provides a critical albeit insufficient first step in the long march towards improved access to health care by the poor and social protection against the cost of illness. Health Financing for Poor People stresses that community financing schemes are no panacea for the problems that low-income countries face in resource mobilization. They should be regarded as a complement to - not as a substitute for - strong government involvement in health care financing and risk management related to the cost of illness.
Based on an extensive survey of the literature, the main strengths of community financing schemes are the extent of outreach penetration achieved through community participation, their contribution to financial protection against illness, and increase in access to health care by low-income rural and informal sector workers. Their main weaknesses are the low volume of revenues that can be mobilized from poor communities, the frequent exclusion of the very poorest from participation in such schemes without some form of subsidy, the small size of the risk pool, the limited management capacity that exists in rural and low-income contexts, and their isolation from the more comprehensive benefits that are often available through more formal health financing mechanisms and provider networks. The authors conclude by proposing concrete public policy measures that governments can introduce to strengthen and improve the effectiveness of community involvement in health care financing.

Product Description
Although the importance of infrastructure sectors in achieving economic growth and poverty reduction is well established, raising debt and equity capital for infrastructure development and service provision has been a challenge for developing countries. Risk mitigation instruments facilitate the mobilization of commercial debt and equity capital by transferring risks that private financiers would not be willing to take to third-party official and private institutions that are capable of taking such risks. There has been increasing interest and discussion on risk mitigation instruments in the context of infrastructure financing among developing country governments, multi- and bilateral donors, and the private sector. However, due to the complex and diverse nature of risk mitigation instruments, what they can and cannot offer and how they can best be utilized for infrastructure financing are not well understood. This book summarizes existing risk mitigation instruments - primarily focusing on those offered by multilateral and bilateral official agencies - and presents recent trends and developments that make these guarantee and insurance products valuable in securing financing for infrastructure projects in developing countries. Topics covered include descriptions of different types of risk mitigation instruments characteristics of multilateral, bilateral, and private providers of risk mitigation instruments and compatability of instruments recent developments and innovative applications of risk mitigation instruments through case transactions areas that pose challenges to the use of risk mitigation instruments as catalysts of infrastructure development. This book will be of particular interest to readers working in business and finance, law and regulation, and infrastructure projects and finance.

A great way to increase typing speed!.......2000-06-15
I teach typing at a middle school and we recently started using this program. My students and I found it to be a great change from the standard drills we were using. They loved the way the programs made them practice the keys that gave them the most trouble and the fact that, in the individualized practices, the program would push them to try typing a little faster in the repetitions. I liked it so much, I bought a copy for my machine at home. My whole family is working with it to increase their typing skills. I highly recommend this program.
Book Description
First Business Start-Up introduces the reader to the common body of knowledge that should be considered by all before making a final decision to go into business. It debunks failure myths that may be keeping qualified people from self-employment, offers easy-to-follow tests, evaluations and thought-provoking analysis to help the reader determine if business owner management is a career choice. It helps the reader determine if his or her business idea makes sense, guides him or her through start-up capital and cash flow needs and shows the reader how to pick those who will best support his or her business effort.
It shows how to minimize any possibility of business failure and helps the reader determine if he or she should grow a first business, buy a business or purchase a franchise. This book is "pre-business plan", a area of entrepreneurship education that is extremely important but generally neglected because most small business start up books are written by those with education but no real-life small business experience.

So you think you want to go into business for yourself; well, this is commendable, but have you the basic or rudimentary knowledge so necessary to make a go of it? Yes, you have spoken with your father-in-law and your Uncle Jess once or twice and maybe some other tycoons or captains of industry, but are you really sure that their paternal or avuncular advise will be enough? Could it be that they have left out some important considerations such as formulating a business plan or securing venture capital?
Hopeful entrepreneur, do not go into the dark woods alone! William L. Russell's First Business Start-Up is a down to earth, no-nonsense approach to help you create and develop your own business dream or venture. It is a valuable guidebook designed to help you succeed. Mr. Russell has had his fair share of bumps and burses over his fifty years of owning and managing a variety of businesses, and he is willing to show you his painful scars and provide you with invaluable information so that you will not experience his pain and make the same costly mistakes. In short, William L.Russell's First Business Start-Up is a must read if you are really serious about making your dreams a reality and becoming a successful business owner and operator.
Very Enjoyable, Concise, Interesting Business Start-Up Book.......2001-12-27
First Business Start-Up is written in a very interesting and easily understandable style. The usual topics, such as evaluating your business ideas, market analysis, business plans, financial reporting, and so forth, are covered in both real life story form and descriptive detail - which both drives home the points and makes for enjoyable reading of normally dry subjects. However, the surprise bonus for the reader is the chapters on business failures and "Failure Hall of Famers." Drawing from his personal experiences, Mr. Russell adds in story fashion a dimension that will enable future entreprenuers to recognize paradighms and pitfalls that may result in severly shatterd income statements and wallets.
While the information is practical and informative, the real and insightful stories that highlight the applications are worth the price of the book.
