A Beautiful book on Roof Structures Built Like Tents.......2005-11-10
This is a book positioned at exactly the right level for someone interested in the concept of building with tent like features. While there are several such structures in the US and around the world, the best known is the new Denver airport. Here is a building concept that offers considerable advantages to conventional design, not the least of which is an entirely new concept in modern architecture that in turn goes back to the days of tents.
The author has been involved in many, if not most of the dramatic structures built using these new techniques. While this book has somewhat of a missionaries dedication to these roof structures, it rather makes sense.
This is not a book designed for engineers, it is a book designed for the concept phase. This is what an interested buyer might use to talk to an engineering firm to tell him what he wants. This is a book that an engineer might use to understand what the customer wants before he gets deeply into the software and the design.
I really liked the book. I only have one argument with the author. As a very frequent flyer for many years, the new Denver airport may have a very nice roof, but the airport itself sucks. It's the worst airport I habitually used.

a wonderful, accessible and personal journey through an understanding of the basis and historical development of tensile membrane structures by a world renowned engineer-designer and teacher. through historic examples and his own contemporary projects, prof. berger allows the reader to grasp a scientific understanding and aesthetic appreciation for these unique structures.
a must book for all architects, engineers and anyone who desires a better comprehension of light weight structures.

stuff coming out of my head........2002-03-27
Stilleto's book is not for everyone. You have to love to look and think about the things you see. The author/artist humbly and clearly narrates sometimes his reasons, sometimes his techniques for the photographs. I recommend this book with the reservation that it is not for everyone. Some will find it tiresome, pretensious or self-congratulatory or simply weird. It looks like I'm not the only one who liked it, though. I bought mine from Title Wave books, based in NM and they were wicked. Got the book in 5 days in great condition and at a superb price.

Each year in the United States, millions of mass-produced greeting cards proclaim their occasional messages: "For My Loving Daughter," "On the Occasion of Your Marriage," and "It's a Boy!" For more than 150 years, greeting cards have tapped into and organized a shared language of love, affection, and kinship, becoming an integral part of American life and culture. Contemporary incarnations of these emotional transactions performed through small bits of decorated paper are often dismissed as vacuous clichés employing worn-out stereotypes. Nevertheless, the relationship of greeting cards to systems of material production is well worth studying and understanding, for the modern greeting card is the product of an industry whose values and aims seem to contradict the sentiments that most cards express. In fact, greeting cards articulate shifting forms of love and affiliation experienced by people whose lives have been shaped by the major economic changes of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A Token of My Affection shows in fascinating detail how the evolution of the greeting card reveals the fundamental power of economic organization to enable and constrain experiences of longing, status, desire, social connectedness, and love and to structure and partially determine the most private, internal, and intimate of feelings.
Beautifully illustrated, A Token of My Affection follows the development of the modern greeting card industry from the 1840s, as a way of recovering that most elusive of things -- the emotional subjectivity of another age. Barry Shank charts the evolution of the greeting card from an afterthought to a traditional printing and stationery business in the mid-nineteenth century to a multibillion-dollar industry a hundred years later. He explains what an industry devoted to emotional sincerity means for the lives of all Americans. Blending archival research in business history with a study of surviving artifacts and a literary analysis of a broad range of relevant texts and primary sources, Shank demonstrates the power of business to affect love and the ability of love to find its way in the marketplace of consumer society.

excellent quick-and-dirty handbook.......2000-01-16
This tiny little book provides an excellent short but surprisingly thorough overview of what one needs to know about business etiquette. Kennedy does a good job of bringing traditional etiquette into today's world without resorting to sarcasm and without losing the small niceties that are the mark of good manners. I now use this book as a text in introductory public communication courses to guide freshman in understanding appropriate professional behavior. It's the best brief etiquette book out there.

Great Book.......2006-12-09
I purchased this book when it first came out but had not gotten around to reading it until now. I was a little suprised by some of the negative comments. I think this book delivers exactly what the title indicates. How a regular guy was able to use common sense and natural charisma to become a success. It reminded me of a lot of the conversations I had with my family growing up in NYC. In my opinion it fills a valuable niche and is worth a read.
Colorful Figure.......2005-12-30
In 16 years, Bo Dietl made 1,400 felony arrests with a 95% conviction rate - the average NYPD cop made 120 in the same time period. While working as a decoy he was mugged over 500 times, and hospitalized in over 30 instances. Dietl made little headway in the NYPD hierarchy, based on his distaste for taking written exams that focused on paperwork and were the primary province of those assigned to desk jobs so they would have time to study. Regardless, after injuring an ankle skydiving, he chose retirement rather than a desk job, and began a career as a private security expert and investigator, with his own company.
Dietl has several lists of "how to succeed," starting with being well-dressed and in excellent physical condition - both build confidence and impress people,
Other suggestions include set deadlines, don't go for perfection (eg. the last 10% takes too long), don't focus on being an innovator, and do work you enjoy. Networking is also stressed - pick up the check, start conversations, look for wallflowers rather than butt in on on-going conversations, and make notes about those you meet. Success on the job benefits from perseverance, asking for more work, taking on different work, thinking big, having an interest in people, and careful listening.
Nothing earth-shaking, but interesting nonetheless as a quick one-hour read - primarily for the mini-stories of Bo's accomplishments as a cop. However, I would not spend $15 or so on it.
Not Worth the Money.......2005-09-12
The book does cover some business relationship basics. But, it has been covered in many other books and nothing new was received from reading this book.
The book came with a CD. The CD was poorly made. Too bad I listened to the CD first. It gave me a bad first impression and that may have carried over to reading the book.
The book did not keep my attention. I have three types of books. There are those that I can't put down. There are others that I throw away after the first 100 pages. And, there are those that I read a little every day when I am on the stationary bike at the gym. This was a bike read because I couldn't handle it for too long.
Common sense.......2005-09-07
Network, network, network... reinforcement of the old way to suceed in business. Good reinforcement of that rule.
A Joke.......2005-08-16
Bo's way of doing business may work in NYC, but in the rest of the country you would be laughed out of the room. What a joke. Some of his great advice is to: wear a fine watch(it's a sign of success),Clean. Shower daily. Use deoderant and cologne. I cant believe I wasted my money on this one.
