Book Description
Lost Twin Cities is an architectural and social history of the downtowns of St. Paul and Minneapolis. The richly illustrated text emphasizes the growth and development of the two downtowns in the nineteenth century and their subsequent alteration by urban renewal and other forces of change in the twentieth. "This book is an effort to reconstruct, in words and illustrations, a lost urban world. It is not a formal architectural history of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Rather, it is a kind of mosaic, a narrative made up of bits and pieces retrieved from a largely forgotten past. Its theme is memory. Whatever else they may be, cities are structures in time, where past and present mingle and the future gapes out from empty holes awaiting yet another round of development. But time moves with a special and destructive speed in American cities, often erasing our monuments before we have a chance to appreciate them."-Larry Millett

Informative and interesting.......2005-12-06
This is a fascinating, though often sad, look at Twin Cities architectural history. I loved it!
Old family photos, described lovingly.......2000-04-04
Reading Lost Twin Cities feels like you've found that great uncle or aunt who can explain all the black and white family photos. This is a great example of the historian's art, a real case in which an author, by choosing a particular way to frame a set of information, calls a past world back to vivid life. It's a bittersweet pleasure to relive the life span of each historical building. Millet's approach is anecdotal, like that old relative's conversational voice.
Indirectly, this book also raises some natural questions about our country's urban development. The demise of the Twin Cities' streetcar system is particularly well described, for example. I could see a creative professor, teaching a lower level course on urban development, assigning this book as a text. (The same professor would also have students view "Chinatown.")
The book was also adapted for television by the local (Minneapolis and Saint Paul) public station. The program is quite entertaining, and catches the tone of the book pretty well.
Larry Millet has written a few Sherlock Holmes mysteries, largely as an excuse to present much of this same historical information in a livelier way. If you're considering which approach to take, stick to this. The mysteries are awful, extremely flat-footed and despiriting for an Arthur Conan Doyle fan; this is a wonderful book.
A great look back at how the Twin Cities once was.......1999-12-28
I have a newer version of this book, and I just wanted to say that it is a very, very interesting book. Even if you arn't originally from the Twin Cities this book is still very interesting to look at to see how things have changed over the years such as the cars, the billboards/advertisements, and the way people dressed. I think that this is definetly worth every cent, and I look forward for another edition to come out with different photos of streets in the Twin Cities.
Excellent Find!.......1999-11-26
So far the best architectural book I've read, especially since I'm from the area of the subjects.
All the good stuff is gone........1999-11-06
Larry Millet, who also writes a series of wonderful Sherlock Holmes mysteries, has created a gem here. In fact, it's the best book on lost architecture to come along since Constance Grieff's "Lost America." Fantastic and beautifully reproduced black and white photographs take us on a heartbreaking tour of all the places now gone forever from the Twin Cities. You'll be treated to views of lost mansions, train stations, churches, hotels and schools (including my personal favorite, the Minneapolis Central High School). This is also a must for fans of Victorian architecture (some of the finest examples ever built can be seen here) or folks who've read Millet's Sherlock Holmes novels and would like to see some of the places mentioned (such as James Hill's Second Empire mansion). The price is a real bargin for a book of this quality, and I wish there was a similar volume for every city in the U.S. The only way to get a better glimpse of the historic architecture of the Twin Cities would be to build a time machine.

Rice' Is A Very Good Teacher.......2004-07-09
I have taken classes from Rice' and every class has taught me something new and inspired me creatively. I'm an experienced editor and agree better proof reading was needed but her examples and information and her association with other artists included in the book are the most important reason for buying it. If her name is on a book, buy it. She has a new book coming out in October 2004 and I am anxious to buy it too.
this book is worth TEN workshops.......2004-05-01
Overflowing with ideas and insider technique tips, Rice and friends present us with bountiful inspiration in this enthusiastic, well-illustrated book. It's not just a must-read but a must-OWN if you're involved with paper and fiber arts. The tip about silk screen ink (for art on fabric) saved me weeks of reinventing the wheel, and that's just one very small note in a book chock FULL of fabulous ideas and projects. Thank you, Rice!
Stamp Artistry by Rockport Press.......2004-02-21
This book is delightfully full of creative uses of rubber stamps by talented artisans in many mediums. The author has explained every project in easy-to-understand terms. Projects are separated into sections, such as "for the home," which makes it easy to select a project, and each section has a well-written introduction by the author. I didn't find one project I didn't like or wouldn't want to reproduce. The photography is wonderful! Any little petty glitches, which you'll find in any book, are easily overlooked because of the innovative subject matter and the masterful photos. (Even the revered "Chicago Manual of Style" has typos!) If you want something a little different, this is the book I recommend. It's worth every penny I spent on it, and I look forward to more great books by the author!
Wonderful Projects, Talented Artists, Poor Proofreading!!!!.......2004-01-01
This Instructional Project Book offers wonderful projects by today's renowned top artists in stamping, clay, collage, etc. However typographical errors distract from the step-by-step instructions.
Xyron is one of the most "top of mind" brands in the Arts and Crafts industry, but was referred to as Zyron several times throughout the book. I noticed misspelled words such as Dall instead of Doll and poor sentence structure.
I do not blame the author, but the Publishing House for proofreading errors. This shows lack of knowledge and details for the art form in which they are representing.
When I buy a book of this price point and with step-by-step instructions I expect top-notch editing!!!!

bulls snot.......2007-05-06
get the degree just dont go in debt for it..get your work experiences(as many fields possible)...save ur money, dont buy this book....just borrow it from somewhere...
Not completely accurate........2006-08-14
There are several discrepancies in this book, starting with the title. The top job is an air traffic controller, making approx. $120K a year. Here's the problem: To become an air traffic controller, a person must enroll in an FAA-approved education program and pass a pre-employment test that measures his or her ability to learn the controller's duties. Exceptions are air traffic controllers with prior experience and military veterans. The pre-employment test is currently offered only to students in the FAA Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative Program or the Minneapolis Community & Technical College, Air Traffic Control Training Program. The test is administered by computer and takes about 8 hours to complete. To take the test, an applicant must apply under an open advertisement for air traffic control positions and be chosen to take the examination. When there are many more applicants than available positions, applicants are selected to take the test through random selection. In addition to the pre-employment test, applicants must have 3 years of full-time work experience, have completed a full 4 years of college, or a combination of both. In combining education and experience, 1 year of undergraduate study--30 semester or 45 quarter hours--is equivalent to 9 months of work experience. Certain kinds of aviation experience also may be substituted for these requirements.
That to me says I need a degree! Several other jobs listed in the book are also "mis-informing".
Find the Right Job for You.......2006-02-27
For those who aren't ready to tackle four years of college, there are still some good jobs out there. In 496 pages, this gives the details on the top 300 jobs that don't require that degree. The top paying one is air traffic controller which pays on the average $102,030 a year.
This is a good resource for anyone trying to decide on a career. Another resource is the Occupational Outlook Handbook, which is available in the reference section of most public libraries.
Not as accurate as it seems.......2006-02-09
One of the top 20 jobs they listed was that of the Forest Firefighter. Unfortunately they failed to take into account recent developments in federal Human Resources policy with regard to the federal wildfire service. New policy requires that anyone in a supervisory or managerial position MUST have a certain type of college degree or certain higher educational credits regardless of experience. This means that anyone without a college degree has very limited promoteability and while it might do as a job, it will not result in a career for them. They will certainly not have the salary indicated in this book. Knowing this one must wonder about the accuracy of the other information in this "updated" edition.
A superb guide for non-college degree job-seekers.......2003-01-06
Collaboratively written by Michael Farr and LaVerne L. Ludden, with additional assistance by Laurence Shatkin, 300 Best Jobs Without A Four-Year Degree is an impressive and thoroughly "user friendly" 449-page compendium of useful lists, statistics, and thorough descriptions of exciting and satisfying jobs, none of which require a college degree. The basics of the trade for everything from advertising sale agents to welding machine operators are presented in a completely reader-friendly format, along with data drawn from government information about the overall makeup of the people who are drawn to each career path. 300 Best Jobs Without A Four-Year Degree is highly recommended as a superb guide for non-college degree job-seekers and otherwise cash-poor students.
Book Description
Entrepreneurs often struggle with many aspects of business: planning and financing company growth, creating a company vision, recruiting, leading, and managing people, as well as personal costs. In Lessons from the Edge, more than 50 business owners and entrepreneurs offer a wealth of real-life stories--in their own words--that provide rare insights about keeping a company healthy and growing. Here is a unique collection of first-person accounts by entrepreneurs who describe their mistakes in business and the lessons they have learned as a result. The stories cover a wide range of experiences from the trials and tribulations of partnerships, to the loss of key customers, theft, finding and retaining employees, and the personal cost of living on the edge. The authors have drawn on interviews with more than 50 entrepreneurs, all of whom are under 45 years of age and are founders or presidents of companies with revenues over $1 million and growing rapidly. They volunteered to share their stories, describing why they lost or almost lost their companies, what they did wrong, and the lessons they have learned. Their narratives are full of mistakes, failure, courage, moments of realization, and timely moves that saved the day. Every company owner will find these accounts insightful, compelling, and occasionally gut wrenching, especially because most face similar challenges and live with the reality that they too could fall off the edge. This instructive and inspiring book brims with lessons for all business owners about courage, persistence, and survival. Lessons from the Edge is an essential read for both established and prospective entrepreneurs.

key insights, information, and tales of overcoming challenge.......2004-08-08
Lessons From The Edge: Survial Skills For Starting And Growing A Company is the collaboration of international expert on corporate growth Jana Matthews and life-long entrepreneur Jeff Dennis, with material assistance by Peter Economy (Associate Editor of "Leader to Leader" magazine). Drawing upon interviews with more than 50 entrepreneurs, all of whom are under 45 years of age and are founders or presidents of companies with revenues over $1 million, Lessons From The Edge offers key insights, information, and tales of overcoming challenges to establish one's place in the competitive business world. Chapters cover the basics and pitfalls of partnerships, money moves, balancing personal and business issues, and much more. A useful reader packed with wisdom and lessons learned from the school of hard knocks.
Lessons from the Edge Review.......2004-04-02
Having read many business books, Lessons from the Edge offers a different prospective for entrepreneurs. It is not so much a "how to" book but rather one that highlights the negative consequences of bad decisions. These are life lessons that can be learned from others rather than yourself. I've heard it said that good men learn from their own mistakes but great men learn from the mistakes of others. This is a perfect opportunity to do that kind of learning.
Each chapter is a fast read. At the end of each section, there is a summary of important lessons learned.
In running my own business, I found some that some chapters were too familiar from my own experience. This is a great book to help you stay away from the "Edge".
Lessons From the Edge.......2004-03-27
I enjoyed reading it and would like to share a few things that came to mind as I read. My relationship with God is first and foremost followed by family. I have made several of the mistakes in varing degrees and it's good to see that I am not alone. It was afirming to see that I am on track with several things that I am working on in my business and have been working on for some time. It will stay on my shelf as a referance.
good lessons - easy to read.......2003-11-18
I am an entrpreneur who really liked the lessons brought forth in Jeff's book. I suggest it to anyone who needs inspiration in the daily struggles of running a business.
There's nothing like learning from the mistakes of others.......2003-09-10
Jana, Jeff and Peter have done an amazing job of compiling real business mistakes and difficulties into an easy to read, must have reference for the entrepreneur. I for one would much rather learn from the challenges of others before forcing myself to learn the hard way out of ignorance. This book provided over 40 opportunities to do just that. This book goes a long way in filling the gaps in my experience and I would suggest it to every would be and current entrepreneur
