    Book Description

This volume completes the documentation of the planning, design, and construction of the Getty Center begun in The Getty Center (1991). Designed by Richard Meier and Partners, the Getty Center sits atop a stunning 110-acre hilltop in west Los Angeles and is the new home for the Museum, the
five Institutes, and the Grant Program that make up the J. Paul Getty Trust.

The book includes a series of essays that underscore the challenges faced by architect, contractor, and owner working collaboratively. A chronology identifies the key dates and events in the design and construction process. Extensively illustrated with photographs by several accomplished
photographers, site drawings from Richard Meier and Partners, and Robert Irwin's drawings of the Central Gardens, the book presents readers with an insider's view of the making of the Getty Center.

5 out of 5 stars Embrace the Body and Beyond with Charles Gatewood.......2001-03-18

Culled from over 30s years of work documenting the fringes of human experience, Charles Gatewood has assembled a luscious collection of 50 duotone photographs from his collection. Starting with art openings and happenings in the late 60s, through the Modern Primitives movement and Burning Man in the late 90s, Gatewood has been capturing people pushing their ideas and their bodies for art and pleasure. See showoffs and gay men from Mardi Gras in the 70s. Visit the disco parties and gay sex clubs in New York. Travel from East Coast to West, and see many ideas and ideals of beauty. As with good art, this one makes you think!

                Book Description

`The accumulation of processes associated with the sudden collapse of the command economies, the restitution of former property rights, the Uruguay Round agreements on elimination of direct subsidies to agriculture, coupled with the demands of a yet to be defined “globalizing economy” have made it necessary for us to rethink the very foundations of agrarian society. The very concepts of rural space are becoming more difficult to define as the world now becomes increasingly urbanized and urban values oriented. Our current estimate of a world population of 8.9 billion in 2050 will place incredible demands on agricultural development in a world where there are no new frontiers of untapped good soils and water. Yet, in spite of our awareness of the synergistic relationship between these trends, there has been surprisingly little thought given to how rural space is to be used. Fortunately, Dr Zhou has not only made an important contribution to filling this gap, but! has brought a refreshing new perspective to the topic. In this, his work is most timely and will undoubtedly find its way to the desktop of all development planners and concerned public.'

                - James C. Riddell, The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations

`Dr Zhou develops a theoretical analysis and a series of original and ingenious policy proposals of general interest. His book, relevant to a variety of countries including many transition economies, should be of great interest to development specialists and government advisors.'

                - Domenico Mario Nuti, University of Rome `La Sapienza', Italy and London Business School, UK

`This is the best book on a third way between the command economy and free market system.'

                - Stuart Holland, Advisor to the (Portugese) Presidency of the European Council

Challenging Nobel economics laureate Theodore W. Schultz, Dr Zhou, in this comparative and path-breaking work, presents a new model for private land ownership or possession to overcome inefficient land-holding, increase farm competitiveness, realize food self-sufficiency and eliminate poverty. He aims to consolidate and enlarge fragmented small farms persisting in Asia, the Pacific, Africa, Latin America, and Central, Eastern and Southern Europe; and to help preserve small farmers, while strengthening large farmers, in the USA, OECD and EU. He introduces the means to facilitate the transition of collectively operated large farms in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia; promote EU enlargement; to prevent food overproduction; and to improve the environment. He also analyzes China's experience with public land ownership and makes important contributions to both new institutional economics and evolutionary political economy.

                    Book Description

In Edmund Burke: A Bibliography of Secondary Studies to 1982 Clara Gandy and Peter Stanlis write, "One of the large unanswered questions is how Burke's economic theory is related to his political theory, and whether they are complementary or contradictory." Canavan is the first to offer a book-length treatment of this question, and in so doing, he places the strength of his argument largely on primary sources rather than a patchwork of previous interpretations. Canavan aims to show that Burke's own emphasis was no on capitalistic laissez-fair economics, as has been assumen, but that his goals were primarily political and cultural. Namely, Burke sought the preservation and development of an aristocratic and Christian civilization supported economically by a leading class of landed property owners. This study projects a new profile of Burke which challenges C.B. Macpherson's sketch of him as a bourgeois capitalist, or, as depicted by J.B. Plumb and Frank O'Gorman, as a hired philsopher of the Whig Oligarchy. Nor does Canavan's study present the philosopher as one who would "declare war on the poor," as Gertrude Himmelfarb charged in her The Idea of Poverty. Burke emerges from Canavan's treatment as a Whiug who admired paternalistic government by the rich and virtuous whom he felt would govern as trustees for the benefit of the whole people. Burke did not support the notion that property by monopolized by any one class in society, but wanted the wealthy to empower intermediary institutions which would hold in check the control of the expansive state, whether that meant the Crown in Britain or the revolutionary state in France.

This is an excellent book on alphabetic shorthand. It is a very comprehensive course and very easy to understand. There are plenty of excercises and in conjunction with the workbook, a very fine course. Even though shorthand is something of the past, there is still a very strong need for skill in this subject. Very well written and the best shorthand textbook on alphabetic shorthand anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-09-03

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

                                My favorite chapters were:

                                1. Initial business concerns
                                2. Your business' structure
                                3. Business start-up details
                                5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
                                7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
                                8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 50 versions of this book sold; the only state I haven't found a copy for is Montana. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

I purchased this book to get all the basics down to start my business in South Carolina...I was quite pleased with this selection. Expecting it to hit and miss on the many areas of entrepreneurship specific to South Carolina; it is quite easy to read and flows easily once you get past the terms. (Quite technical in some parts) Overall, it was a godsend with a wealth of knowledge and a big help! Armed with this book, I feel even more confident than ever to get any one of my business ideas started, planted and growing.
