5 out of 5 stars Martin Gardner's Annotated Alice is definitive........1996-08-14

Martin Gardner avoids questionable psychoanalyticinterpretations, and instead describes the objects ofCarroll's satire that have been forgotten since the Victorian era. His notes allow us to fully enjoy Lewis Carroll's humor, and to see why Alice was so loved by children then (and by mathematicians now).

    Book Description

Drawing on recent work in critical theory, feminism, and social history, this book explains the relationship between the novel and the emergent commodity culture of Victorian England, using the image of the "display window". Novels Behind Glass analyzes the work of Thackeray, Eliot, Dickens, Trollope, and Gaskell, to demonstrate that the Victorian novel provides us with graphic and enduring images of the power of commodities to affect our beliefs about gender, community, and individual identity. It will be of interest to students of Victorian literature and history as well as social and cultural theory.

      Product Description

Over Bridges Across Tables, a collection of vibrant stories, captures the beauty and magic of the Venetian Lagoon. It's a memoir about Anna Marchini and her family, and the charm and challenges of growing up in the early 60's on the island of Murano within the glass-blowers' community, where life is played out and memories are built on cobblestone streets, over many bridges and across kitchen tables. Anna's father, Nico, teaches his values to his six children while he encourages them to have dreams, build good memories and savor the simple things in life. The stories convey the essence of life through Anna's memories, as Anna, now an adult living in the United States, struggles to understand the complexity of cultural identity and the joy and frailty of human experiences.

5 out of 5 stars Over Bridges Across Tables.......2006-04-28

This is a wonderful, intimate book that transports the reader to another time a place full of romance and wonder, but grounded in the human condition common to humanity. The experience of growing up in Murano and Venice is vividly and sensitively communicated in a way that makes the reader feel that he has lived the experience, but at the same time motivates one to travel there to see it, hear it, and feel it. But, of course, if you are from Murano, you already knew what I was going to say about the book anyway. An unforgettable read... highly recommended.

              Book Description

Nineteenth-Century Literary Realism radically redefines the genre of realism, arguing that its political commitment to social reform--its earnest agenda--often enters into conflict with its formal demands. Obliged to portray life as truthfully as possible--often through the vehicle of describing tortured souls in a world out of sorts--realism must also satisfy ideological demands that may not jibe with that truth, leading to a crisis of form and function. By looking at these conflicts as peculiar to realism, Kearns reads as realist several texts usually considered too fantastic to fit the realist prescription.

              5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Classic.......2001-01-14

Bob Gill is a genius when it comes to graphic design, and this book is the proof of it. While this edition may be out of print, it would be a worthy addition to any personal or professional creative library. So if you don't own this book it's well worth the wait or extra fee.

While the work presented here has a very dated 70's look to - that not what's important. The idea behind the work is that the graphic design communicates an idea. Each page in the book starts by giving you an "orginal problem" from a client - and then shows how Gill comes up with a solution to to not only solving the problem , but to redefine it. Gill uses a wide range of styles to solve his problems including plain typography, illustration and photography. His work is very clever, and is the opposite of people who just make pretty pictures.

This book would also be great for a copywriter or anyone trying to understand creative communication. If you can't get your hands on this book, I would suggest "A Smile in the Mind" published by Phaidon, which includes many bits of work found in "Forget all the rules about graphic design". However I hope the publisher will do a reprint, because this book should be read by every student of graphic design.

Bill Brandt's work has a striking poetic immediacy and a potent suggestiveness of mood rarely seen in still photography. Sombre landscapes, brooding portraits of prominent literary figures, and surreal, distorted, abstract nudes are featured in this superb, nearly comprehensive volume of the great man's oeuvre.

Just a slight glance at some of these unforgettable pictures and the viewer is hypnotized--eyes rapt to the page--drawn into a strange, mysterious world of the past and overwhelmed by its melancholy lyricism. One senses a profound humanity in Brandt's treatment of desolation and poverty: a quality comparable to the best work of Expressionist painters like Munch or Schiele.

It is interesting to note that the visual sensibility found in Brandt's high contrast, black-and-white compositions and sometimes startling, baroque perspectives also bears comparison to the cascading, labyrinthine imagery of Orson Welles's films. And the influence of Brandt's work appears evident in a number of other dreamy/nightmarish films: e.g., Ingmar Bergman's "The Silence," Roman Polanski's "Repulsion," David Lynch's "Eraserhead" and "The Elephant Man," and Michael Radford's "Nineteen Eighty-Four," to name but a few.

To put it simply: Bill Brandt is a genius of the lens--a supreme master of light and shadow--and, without a doubt, one of the most vital and innovative artists of the twentieth century.

                            Book Description

Improving Banking Supervision shows how greater market discipline can be used to help improve the quality of banks and their management in a world of increasing complexity, size, and innovation. The book is based on research undertaken in the Nordic countries and New Zealand, and set in an international context through reference and comparison to the experiences of banks throughout the EU and the US. The authors show how traditional methods of regulation, particularly across borders face limits and can impose substantial costs on customers. They propose alternatives for today's international banks, based on a network of incentives to prudential behavior and focusing on three main issues: the development of transparent corporate structures; the public disclosure of comparable meaningful information so that markets can assess banks; and the implementation of effective means to allow banks to exit without unacceptable costs to society.

Maximize the Moment is a biblically-based self-help book by T.D. Jakes, a leading African-American pastor, motivational speaker, and the author of The Lady, Her Lover, and Her Lord. Jakes begins the book with a powerful reminder of the frailty of life, the reason that "we should maximize and prioritize our time and esteem it as precious." In a straightforward, humble style, Jakes teaches readers to reach their God-given potential in family, work, and spiritual life. His advice, in short, is to think of every moment as an opportunity for decision, and then to make decisions that are always faithful and constructive. The passages advocating freedom from fear-filled and destructive relationships are especially powerful, and well-crafted to be useful for both men and women. Maximize the Moment also has a wealth of sayings that stick in the brain without the cloying sentiment that often colors self-help books. "The wisest thing we can do," Jakes writes, "is minimize the liabilities, plan for the unexpected, enjoy the ecstasies, endure the disappointments, and then face the inevitable."

                              Book Description

Using ageless biblical principles, Bishop T.D. Jakes teaches that every moment of every day, God provides all we need to achieve success. In Maximize the Moment, he explains how to release ourselves from damaging relationships and debilitating fears, how to face and conquer obstacles that may stand in our path to success, and how to move beyond our painful pasts.

"His stories are thought provoking, his guidelines are easy to follow and his questions allow the reader to align the course of his or her life to the biblical precepts presented in the book." (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)

5 out of 5 stars Big man, big heart, big message.......2005-08-05

The fact T. D. Jakes is a successful businessman, as well as a successful evangelist and pastor, makes "Maximize the Moment" stand apart from many other books about Christian living. It's a double header kind of book, worth the time because of the Christian message and equally worth the time for the success-in-business-and-life message. Give it as a gift to anybody because there's a bucketful of good information in these pages for all of life.

                                  Book Description

That the commercial developments of the centuries between 1000 and 1500 are important for understanding social change is the focus for discussion in this text. The author explores the significance of the growth and mulitiplication of English towns, the growing use of money and the increasing dependance of many families upon trade. He builds these observations into a broader understanding of change, in which related legal and administrative developments ae also assessed.
