Book Description
While many architects use PHP for projects, they are often not aware of the power of PHP in creating enterprise-level applications. This book covers the latest version of PHP version 5 -- and focuses on its capabilities within a multi-tier application framework. It contains numerous coding samples and commentaries on them. A chapter discusses object orientation in PHP as it applies to the multi-tier architecture and other chapters discuss HTTP and SOAP, the two communication protocols most useful in tying together multiple layers. There is also coverage of database design and query construction as well as information about tricks you can use in generating user interfaces.
·Covers PHP as it relates to developing software in a multi-tier environmenta crucial aspect of developing robust software with low cost and ease of use as design goals.
·Makes extensive use of Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) and Web Services as implemented in PHP and NuSOAP.
·Shows precisely how to make use of the InnoDB table type newly available in MySQL. InnoDB supports true referential integrity and row-level locking.
·An application example (a multi-currency bookkeeping application) runs throughout the book, showing various PHP capabilities as well as the database interaction.
·An accompanying web site includes the source code for all of the examples and the sample download.

Also disappointed.......2007-04-12
I have to agree with a previous review, this book is a disappointment. This book falls somewhere between a blog post and a sophomore CS student term paper. They even pulled that old slightly larger font trick to thicken this book.
The code is so ridiculously simple, repetitive, and inefficient that its almost tedious to read through. I understand the code isn't focused, but their should at least be some logical code. Example after example is so repetitive you really only need to read the first one from each chapter. The chapter on nusoap is literally 3 or 4 pages long and an example of 5 lines of code.
You can find plenty of free resources online that do a better job explaining these theories easier. No need to waste your time or money here.
Very good book.......2005-10-07
This book does a very good job of explaining what "Multi-Tier Application Programming" is in the world of web development, and gives a good starting point on how to go about designing your environment. If you are looking for code to copy and paste into web pages, keep looking. This book is not a tutorial with lots of sample code. Its a good overview of an architectual framework.
A good read.......2005-01-05
I loved this book. Wall has an easy to read writing style that is hard to find in this genre. Content wise, I'd been looking for information on the InnoDB table type, and found it here. No other book I've looked at shows as explicitly as this one how to build true referential integrity into a MySQL database. The book is worth its price for the InnoDB information alone.
Very disappointing.......2004-11-04
I hate this book. All the book is the repetition of the same code with very, very few differences. The description lets argue that is pointed to advanced users but the content is so basic that is hard to believe. It uses SOAP in it's more basic fashion. The code is poor (also the HTML and the Javascript used). The code is written in a so invesive fashion that if you strip it (and is not a bad idea), you will find no more than 30 pages.
The Multi-Tier is just supposed to be good and misuesed.
As you may understand, I strongly advise to not buy this book.
Book Description
This lavishly illustrated book examines the variety of ways in which works of art have achieved a position in the so-called canon of Western art. Focusing on a series of case studies of art and institutions in Britain and France from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries, the book explores the construction and evolution of canonical values.
This is the first of six volumes in the series Art and Its Histories, created to accompany the Open University course by the same title.

A Different Sort of Refresher Course.......2001-06-02
Honestly, I picked up this book because of gorgeous reproductions. And because it focuses on English institutions and art--not my strongest suite. But each chapter not only refreshed my basic knowledge of art history but reminded and educated me of the many factors that play into the shaping of the discipline, from royal schools to government decrees. Most interesting was the way the authors researched how museum collections are formed by not only taste and education but also politics and monetary factors. These should be obvious, but sometimes the cleaness of an exhibition wipes away the history of why an artwork was chosen, why it is displayed in a certain manner, and why a museum may, or may not, promote their collections.

The Art Of Seeing 2.......2004-06-14
I really enjoyed viewing The Art of Seeing 2, by Reuters. Coming from a journalism point of view, the photographs in this book are stunning! The book truly does capture some of the most significant moments in recent history. The photos range from important sports and celebrity moments to symbolic or historical political statements.
Since the photos are taken from an agency that shoots primarily photo journalistic photos, some people may not appreciate some of the photos. The true beauties of these images lie in the capture of the moment and emotion and truth. I really enjoyed many of the political and war photos, very in your face. Some of them were shocking, taking me back in realization and touched me at the same time. In a solely artistic sense, the pictures had a great sense of composition and lighting however they are documentary. This is definitely not printed to act as a fine art book, more of just a collection of incredible pieces of journalistic work. The book definitely demonstrates the talent pool found in the world of photo-journalists.

Lots and lots of history.......2001-11-03
This book covers a lot of ground. It looks at disciplines, some info on the feeding restriction, some example characters and history and history and history and history. More than half of this book looks at the history of the clan. Much of the description of the clan is taught in terms of the history around the lesson learned by the clan. As history goes, this is well done, but if you are wanting a consice description of the clan you will not find it here.
YOU WANNA BE RICH??? OK BUT REMEMBER ..YOU ARE A VAMPIREEEE!.......2001-01-04
This book seems like a guide to the busisness guy...BOY don't you remenber that you are a creature of the night? The history part of the book is poor conpared whith the other clanbooks and even whith the old one,the large part of the book explains the so call :ventrue society, something pretty booring after reading the same stuff in all the white wolf books that spell the word VENTRUE....guys.. the clan has a lot of potential for many things not ongly to be a large corporation owned by inmortals there are almost no new disciplines ,and one merit...the art wasn't great except shy's portraits and other ventrue of note could have been added...for such clan whith that much potential this book coul have been MUCH better
Noble Blood.......2000-09-09
There is good material in the new edition of CLANBOOK VENTRUE including many of the new CLANBOOK series' standard features- clan disciplines explained, discipline variations given, a new merit, a sample brood, noteworthy Ventrue, player character templates, and MIND'S EYE THEATRE stats. There is exploration of Ventrue history (and its revision over the years) and detailed description of the clan's organization. The "Secret Masters" material from the original book seems to have been dropped, though- a problem only because of discontinuity with the Dark Ages Ventrue material in LIBELLUS SANGUINIS I.
The Sabbat material, although limited, is OK and includes territory shifts between Sabbat and Camarilla in the 19th century US. Templates include an antitribu follower of the Path of Power and the Inner Voice (no Honorable Accord, though) and a really mean anarch who could easily be Sabbat instead. (This installment's Sabbat typo is omission of the designation "antitribu" on the appropriate templates' sample character sheets.)
A major problem is that, like the original, this new book lacks specifics about the Ventrue weakness. Although it examines how Ventrue neonates develop their restricted feeding preferences and how preferences change, specific preferences are not listed either for the player character templates or the noteworthy Ventrue. (This is omitted in most VtM supplements, unfortunately- a notable exception being NEW ORLEANS BY NIGHT, if you can find it.) No examples of or guidelines for playable feeding preferences are discussed.
However, to be fair, there is helpful, practical discussion about how Ventrue establish and conceal their herds. (To offer more explicit advice: playable Ventrue characters generally require strong Herd ratings.) Also, except for the "Vitaephile", you can probably guess prey restrictions for the player character templates from their descriptions. Still, contrast this with the much clearer handling of derangements in the new CLANBOOK: MALKAVIAN.

Surprisingly good........2007-10-01
This book is the fifth installment in a 13-book series based on the White Wolf "Vampire: The Masquerade" gaming system. As such it has no proper ending or beginning; in spite of that rather large flaw, and the fact that it is rare for a book based on a gaming system to stand on its own well, I find this book to have been quite well-written, the characterizations good, the plot excellent if you like intrigue and scheming (if you don't, this is definitely NOT the series for you) and the actual wordsmithing to be better than most for a mass-market paperback, more than passably competent. Either the series is getting better as it goes along, or I'm gradually being drawn into the ongoing plot as it finally begins to show signs of ripening; a plot that will take thirteen books to come to fruition by nature must move slowly, but in any case I've found the fourth and fifth books of the series to be far better and more interesting than any of the first three. I'm still not entirely sure about the series; I think that a thirteen-book series may be a bit over-ambitious for the concept (I understand that the reason for the number is that that's how many different clans there are, and it was desired to feature one clan in each novel, but I still am unconvinced that there's really enough plot here for that many books) but I'm not willing to write the series off as a failed experiment yet. I'll finish it out before passing judgement.
If you like vampire stories............2007-05-13
If you like vampire stories, read this series. It's full of all the plotting and intrigue you would expect from characters who live forever. I mean, what else do they have to do. The whole series is full of unexpected plot twists.
One of the better clan novels.......2006-07-04
This was one of the better of the clan novels.. Although not my favorite (Lasombra), it held up very well and gave more details about the strategy of the ongoing war efforts. Reads very fast.
Setting Up The Middle Game.......2004-12-18
The Ventrue are the politicians of the Camarilla. They can be glib, polite, and socially conscious, by never forget that down deep it is power, and the glory that attends it that draws them to the flame. Many have a considerable talent for this and have become the primogens and princes of vampire establishments. They are not, characteristically, experimenters or iconoclasts. They are committed to the laws of the Camarilla and the increase of their personal power. They are stodgy - so much so that even Fleming, who is a traditionally oriented writer, can't resist some humor at their expense.
Jan Pieterzoon is the novel's central character, come to Baltimore to help the Camarilla reeling form the attack of the Sabbat in Atlanta find a functional defense before US vampires fall into complete lawlessness. Powerful in his own right and scion of the Ventrue justicar Pieterzoon is best at keeping the panic within limits and keeping the Camarilla from dissolving.
He is balanced by Victoria Ash, Toreador, who will continue to play a major part in these novels. She is a vampire who uses her own seductiveness to control at a subtler level than Pieterzoon, who is a 'bottom line' sort of vampire. And lurking in the background is Colchester, a Nosferatu, and the character who persistently steal the show. Flemings characters are usually strong, and Clan Venture is no exception.
This is not a heavily plotted book. The focus is on the Camarilla's efforts to regroup after the Sabbat uprising and is more of a panarama of tidbits that move the larger picture along. Most of the action serves for character development and the setting of the themes to come, but there is nothing like a Camarilla turn around, and a great deal of breast beating by the losing side.
More an extended chapter than a book.......2000-05-29
This book is more of a transitional interlude than a stand alone story. It shows results of things that happened in previous books and sets up things that will happen in later books. Specifically, it deals with the Camarilla trying to regroup and manage the refugee situation in Baltimore after the successful Sabbat seiges in Atlanta and D. C. They have a lot of meetings, discuss a lot of strategy, scheme and manipulate. It has a much more panoramic approach to its story than Fleming's other contribution to the series CLAN NOVEL: GANGREL. Although these proceedings are very well presented with a lot of fine, small details, it probably will not hold your interest well if you are not following the whole series.
Unless, that is, you are really interested in watching the Ventrue at work.
What saves the book and makes it more than a manditory exercise is Fleming's ability to develope his Ventrue characters and the intrigues involving them- much of it also involving the seductive Victoria Ash and Nosferatu who play all sides against each other. Although he's giving you the big picture of the Camarilla's situation, Fleming's lens is not so wide that the reader can't get involved in the dealings of two very important Ventrue. First there is the still all too human Camarilla star strategist, Jan Pieterzoon. (Jan's sire is Hardestadt, one of the Camarilla's legendary founders. He appears, too.) Then there is Garlotte, the smarmy Prince of Baltimore, a classic pompous Ventrue bully with a dysfunctional brood of childer apparently sired simply to feed his ego. And just so that virtuous Jan doesn't get to be too much of a white knight, Fleming does some horribly twisted things with the Ventue prey exclusion.
As in GANGREL, Fleming also doesn't shrink from showing the more harsh realities of vampiric existence- whether it's the issues raised by feeding or the cruelties involved in the inforcement of the Masquerade. Even though the book may not have much of a plot on its own, the subplots are dark gems and really flesh out the Ventrue and the special responsibities they feel they carry.

It's an ok story for a comic book. The ending gets tied in to blood sucking yuppies. But hey, that's what the Ventrue are!
