Modernism at Mid-Century: The Architecture of the United States Air Force Academy
ASIN: 0252028910 |
Book Description
The United States Air Force Academy stands as one of the most extensive architectural projects of the entire cold war era. Robert Allen Nauman's fascinating On the Wings of Modernism shows the project was also a volatile battleground for competing ideas about aesthetics and politics. It remains a key to fully understanding American modernism.
Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill's (SOM) first public exhibition of plans and models for the project was designed by the former Bauhaus master Herbert Bayer, and it incorporated photographs of the Colorado Springs site by Ansel Adams and William Garnett. Myths and metaphors of flight and the American West were interwoven with those of modernism, both to justify the design and to free it from any lingering socialist or European associations. Questions of architectural imagery and meaning in postwar America were debated in numerous hearings as Congress considered the funding of the academy buildings.
Nauman argues that contrary to the technological and teleological interpretations presented by the polemicists of "International style" modernism, the academy's actual production was squarely grounded in bureaucratic and political processes. He demonstrates that selection of both the site and the design firm was the result of political maneuverings involving the U.S. military leadership.
On the Wings of Modernism examines the complete history of the academy's construction, from the earliest conception of the project to its eventual completion. Using previously unexplored resources of the U.S. Air Force Academy, SOM, and the Air Force Academy Construction Agency, Nauman uncovered materials such as negatives of original Ansel Adams photographs of the sites. He also conducted extensive interviews with the SOM project director for the academy, Walter Netsch.
This timely study of a cornerstone of American modernism offers new interpretations of the complex political and cultural environment of the postwar era and is sure to enrich any discussion of architecture, architectural history, or modernism generally.

With deep roots in bureaucratic and political processes.......2004-05-03
On The Wings Of Modernism: The United States Air Force Academy is the unique architectural study of the 50-year-old U.S. Air Force Academy, examining both its history and the forces both artistic and practical that permanently shaped this long standing edifice. Black-and-white photographs enhance this tasteful and commemorative discussion that reveals a modernistic institution with deep roots in bureaucratic and political processes.

A new era in art.......2007-09-27
Not only was l able to correct old bad old habits, l have learnt an incredible amount from this art instruction book. Highly recommended to both beginners and accomplished artists.
Fun & Useful.......2007-07-14
I'm an artist (or, rather, used to be). I consider myself an illustrator, but haven't painted in a long time. This book is great, as she discusses mixing colors, selecting brushes, using the medium and so on. This is a fine book!!!
Artistic Masterpiece!.......2007-05-07
This book IS the oil painting course I've always wanted. I've taken a oil painting course at my local community college, but did not recieve the detailed instruction this book offers. I highly recommend it for the beginner painter. I also recommend Color Mixing Recipes by Walter Foster. It really helps you to get the color just right. It has an index on everything from apples to wet sand.Color Mixing Recipes
great starter but you'll need more books.......2007-04-09
This book was a great starter book and was exceptionally helpful in learning where to start and how to mix colors. It also provides a few step by step classes to get you started. It is a true beginners book, but you'll be looking for new inspiration after you've spent some time with it.
Amazingly good!.......2007-03-23
I would encourage anyone interested in purchasing art books to go to your local library and check some out before you purchase. That is what I did and that is why I bought this wonderful book. Her presentations are very clear and easy to understand. She has carefully constructed lessons, just as if you were taking a class. I like the structure. I like the fact that there is a whole lesson spent learning to use the brush to achieve different techniques. Each lesson takes me about 2-3 hours to complete, but when I am done I feel I have actually made some progress. The lessons build on previous lessons so you actually can see progress from week-to-week. Finally I am sticking to a schedule and actually painting instead of just thinking about it. The practice is what brings the improvement. Her book just makes it easier.

A wonderful book.......2006-06-09
I bought this based on a handful of Internet recommendations I found, but I worried that it would be yet another generic oil painting book that touched on everything and taught nothing.
It's a wonderful book. It does indeed cover just about everything, but it doesn't just touch on subjects, it covers them in depth. Important subjects, very readable and understandable writing, I'd have to rate this a must have. If you're to have one book on concepts then this is it. Get others with painting demonstrations if you want, or if you need to explore a particular topic in great depth as your skills improve, but start with this one.
Chapters: 1) Basic Structural Drawing 2) Linear Perspective in Cubic Objects 3) Learning Shape Awareness 4) Understanding Values 5) Translating Values into Light and Shadow 6) Modeling the Four Basic Forms 7) Various Light Directions 8) The Behavior of Cast Shadows 9) Basic Color theory 10) How Color Functions in Realism 11) Complementary Color Sequences 12) Light, Shadow, and Texture 13) Color Perception and Harmony 14) Analogous Color Sequences 15) Advanced Color Theory 16) Composition 17) Design 18) Advanced Painting Techniques 19) Color in Landscape 20) Practical Concerns for the Artist
I feel like I can be a teacher of art after reading this!.......2003-03-06
Found this book in my local library and dind't want to return it. I don't really like Gloria Foss's paintings, but she is an amazing teacher. Very well structered, clear, very detailed, covers everything that seemed so confusing to me before. It gave me so much confidence, that I feel like I can be a teacher of art now. It's expensive, but it's the only book you need. It covers media, tools, drawing, perspective, color theory, 3-dimensional shadowing, composition, design and everything is easily understandable. The chapter on design gave me more information than a course in interior design that I took.
I'm buying it!.......2002-07-15
I got this book out of the library among many other techniques books in various mediums on painting, composition, drawing, color theory, and this one is the best and most clearly comprehensive one I've read. Pricey, but I am buying it as a reference book.
Excellent reference book for beginner or advanced........2002-05-20
It's not often one finds a book that is this usefull. Filled with good advice and examples, color and B&W, that would be usefull to beginning or experienced painters. This book refrains from trying to teach a particular style of painting. Rather it covers subjects of interest to all painters in oil. I am primarily an acrylic painter but that has never detracted from the usefullness of this book. There are chapters on structural drawing, perspective, modeling, basic and advanced color theory, composition and design, color in landscape, even "Practical concerns for the emerging artist." The color theory chapters are particularly good, with examples and exhaustive color tables to help one learn one of the most difficult parts of painting, the use of color. One may or may not like Foss's style of painting, but this book is designed to help you learn the techniques that will allow you to find your own style.
Teach yourself to paint.......2000-11-08
The writter has successfuly bring a live a classroom lesson as well as a complete guide to deal with oil painting. I've read a few other similiar book and this book had demostrate a true dedication to education than just oil painting for hobbies. I had a wonderful time reading it and learning to paint. I hope to own a copy of this book as my own.

Doesn't Make It.......2005-07-15
The intention is good but the book is spoiled by using gray scale pictures (except for a four page color section out of 700+ pages)which do not illustrate the authors results. One bright note, the author does explain the basics tools and features of PhotoShop Elements clearly but the lack of color detracts too much to make this book worthwhile. There are a lot of books on the subject which do an admirable job and this one comes up short.
OK but not quite there.......2005-04-26
This book addresses 2 topics, both digital photography and Photoshop Elements 3, doing an average job of each. It's reasonably easy to read, but doesn't quite work for me. I was most keen on the PSE3 section and found the flow odd .... I would have thought after the intro about accessing photos, basic editing would have followed. No, instead there is discussion around line drawings and adding text etc, not closely related to photography.
As most photos are black & white and printed on average quality paper, it is sometimes difficult to appreciate what is happening when following editing of photos.
I was disappointed that it doesn't discuss basic editing of RAW files, nor does it really discuss workflows
Overall, an easy read and an OK/good intro book, not quite hitting the mark

Postmodern Theory
ASIN: 089862424X |
Book Description
Diverse Marxian intellectual cultures are having important effects on political struggles over the subjects of history and knowledge, international law, television, the state, democratic theories and institutions, bodies, sexuality, masculinity, environmentalism, postmodernism, labor, the meanings of the end of the USSR, children, archaeology, the meanings of Columbus, cartography, the North American economy, welfare, NAFTA, the Gulf War, higher education, and the many other topics discussed by the contributors to this important volume. These essays show readers how Marxism's continuing vitality derives from its profound allegiance to diverse struggles for social justice. At this moment we need progressive imaginaries alternative to the tired and ineffectual ones that have left us with enormous challenges and compelling questions on every aspect of contemporary social relations. Here, well-known thinkers are joined by important new voices in exploring fruitful directions for vision, analysis, and political action. This is without question the best collection of mediations so far on postorthodox Marxian tendencies in contemporary global cultures.
Customer Reviews:
mixed bag on marxism.......2002-03-19
This collection is certainly 'diverse'. There are a number of interesting essays here, a number of mediocre ones, and a number which could fall into the 'relevant' category if they happen to be your thing. Overall a good introduction to the influence of what was then called 'postmodernism' on academic Marxism in the USA. 'Postmodernism' may have worn out its welcome by now but that by no means signifies a victory for complacent 'modernist' Marxists such as Eagleton, but rather might signal the end of Marxism's relevance in academic work and its relegation to political movements in Nepal, Chiapas, etc.
The one stand-out essay here is Warren Montag's paper on Louis Althusser's autobiography. Surely essential reading for anyone reading 'The Future lasts Forever'. You can probably photocopy that brief piece from the local library, however.
Fifty Academic Marxists Treading Water.......2002-01-22
Insulated, tenured academic Marxists like Callari didn't lose their rudder after the cold war, they lost their keel. These essays are illuminating not because the subject matter is something we haven't heard before, but because they reveal the grumpy, cantankerous nature of self-indulgent authors who are bobbing around the ocean willing to say anything to get noticed.
Updating Marx.......2000-04-07
Marxism in the Postmodern Age provides, perhaps, one of the most comprehensive reviews of current Marxist thought and action available today. Featuring over 50 essays by prominent theorists, artists, and educators dedicated to the progressive cause, this volume manages to cover nearly every aspect of Marxist theory in our society, from politics and economics to art and pop culture. While there are many standard pieces covering topics such as the global state of the anti-capitalist cause in the wake of the Soviet collapse, there are also more practical and lighter topics such as "Waiting for the Revolution, or How to Smash Capitalism in Your Spare Time" and chapters with specific focus on Marxism in popular culture. It is this diversity which is really this works greatest strength. By bringing together both "academic Marxists" and active radicals, reformers and revolutionaries, political commentators and protestors, this work provides a more comprehensive view of the current state of the struggle than most other sources. This book is an excellent reference source, most people won't be interested in every article in this compendium, and a significant number require at least a comfortable grasp of complex economic and political theorems, but the book does provide information on both common and rare topics of interest to most progressives and radicals. The one true drawback to this volume is its publication date; the book was originally published in 1995, and many of the articles date back to the 1992 conference on "Marxism in the New World Order" held at UMass Amherst. In a rapidly changing socio-political climate, this is a significant time period, and many issues, which are now at the forefront of the fight against capitalism, are mentioned only briefly or not at all. For example, the World Trade Organization, currently perhaps the organization against which there is, perhaps, the most domestic Marxist protest (as demonstrated in Seattle) isn't even mentioned. This, however, is not a crippling drawback, and the scope of the text easily makes up for it. This is an essential for anyone seeking to gain an understanding of Marxism not as a theory, but as an ideology, and as a possibility for the future.

Book Description
This is a new workbook designed to aid the learning and practice of transcribing the English language phonetically. It offers an accessible, comprehensive guide to the most important features of connected speech, allowing the students to gain a better understanding of how the English language is pronounced.
Customer Reviews:
Increase awareness of English allophonic processes.......2003-03-01
_English Transcription Course_ is a programmed series of lessons in representing spoken RP English in IPA symbols for phonetics and ESL students and teachers. What distinguishes this book is its emphasis on connected speech processes, rather than just citation forms, which is all that many ESL learners are taught. The book offers two basic methods of giving the student practice: by providing passages written in (1) regular orthography, for transcription into IPA; and (2) IPA transcription, for reading aloud.
Each chapter introduces the student to a different type of allophonic variation that speakers tend to be little aware of. The student must learn to 'hear' these processes and then to incorporate them into increasingly narrow transcriptions of the practice passages. The processes are described by the titles of Chapters - or 'Lessons' - Three through Eight: Stress, rhythm and weak forms (concentrates on reduced forms of function words [and, there, can]); Sandhi r (both regular linking r [car of my own] and intrusive r [draw it]); Consonant syllabicity (syllabic n [listen] and l [little]); Elision (alveolar plosive elision [can't think], schwa elision [history]); Assimilation ([is she, red book, don't you]); and Glottaling (replacement of t with a glottal stop [not now]. Lesson One introduces 'Symbols and terminology', Two gives 'Transcription hints', and Nine offers 'Further practice'. There is also an introduction, an appendix with answers to all the exercises, a glossary, and a short bibliography of textbooks, workbooks and pronouncing dictionaries.
Anyone who has assembled a book like this knows about the difficulty of finding suitable practice texts, mainly due to copyright laws. The authors solved this by writing all of their own material, a formidable task. Although students can easily find texts on their own for transcription, and the authors encourage this, the key is getting help with transcriptions, which is where these self-produced texts with answer keys come in. The texts include personal anecdotes, descriptions of nature and places, and some surprisingly successful examples of creative writing, e.g. science fiction and household drama. Below follows an excerpt (p. 51) from an anecdote about a group of Italians on a train who were puzzling over the author's IPA transcription work:
The man said, 'It's him! He's doing it again! I wonder what that funny lettering is.' They all collected around me, peering over my shoulder.' I couldn't resist the challenge. When I got off the train, I said in Italian, 'I hope you all have a pleasant day.' I wish I had had a camera to take a picture of the expressions on their faces.
It is surprising that there apparently is no accompanying cassette tape or CD with this book. This would be of tremendous value particularly for instructors and students outside the UK, including those in English-speaking and in non-English-speaking countries.
This is a carefully thought out, well-designed, and meticulously produced volume which will be useful and instructive to teachers and students learning to transcribe any dialect of English, though it is obviously most suited to those working in RP. Phonetics and ESL instructors who are serious about cultivating in their students good pronunciation and clear, solid concepts of what that entails would do well to take a close look at this book.
