5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary lives.......2003-07-11

In her book, `Ordinary Ministry, Extraordinary Challenge', edited by Norma Cook Everist, is an exploration through the personal stories, experiences and insights of women in ministry. In this work, she explores the unique and not-so-unique aspects of being a woman in ministry. Female clergy and lay leaders have been sought for their input in putting together a collection based on the full range of issues, drawing on years of experience in preaching, stewardship, outreach, sacramental ministry, and more.

This is not a book just for women, but rather one for all people involved in the life of the church to help understand some of the challenges and difficulties that women face in different types of churches.

This is not a book that is a 'how-to' or a handy-dandy guide. These are reflections of experiences, and from these stories lessons can be learned; alas, not always happy lessons. These lessons can be broadly categorised into theology, leadership, context and public ministry areas. Suitable for classroom, private study or small group guidance, this book can serve most anyone or any community well that is trying to come to terms with the role of women in ministry and leadership, no matter where the person or community is beginning.

There is an implicit question in all of the essays, which goes along the lines of, 'Does the ministry women engage in differ substantially from that of their male peers?' The answer to this is both yes and no.

With regard to the use of the word ordinary, this is the basis of the words ordination and ordained -- those of us who are ordained are not set above or set apart for special privilege, but rather set to a pattern, or an order of life -- sometimes the liturgy can be called the 'ordinary' -- the order or pattern of life. Women have been in informal orders for the whole history of Christianity; more recently, most denominations have opened the ranks of the formally ordered.

But, of course, the word 'ordinary' also can mean common, usual, regular -- the practise of ministry is a common, usual and regular thing for the women who write in this book, and indeed in many stories not contained in this book.

One task of this book is to illustrate how 'ordinary' the ministry of women is, in all senses of the word. `God creates us to be steward ministers in the midst of sometimes incomprehensible pain, confusion, crisis, even catastrophe. We who claim the name of Christ dare to trust God to be not only the Righteous One, but also the Merciful One as we participate with our whole being in a ministry that trusts God is at work through us in the midst of it all.'

4 out of 5 stars Ordinary Ministry, Extraordinary Challenge is superb!.......2000-06-05

"This book is not *about* women ministers," writes the Rev. Dr. Norma Cook Everist, editor of Ordinary Ministy. "It is written *by* women ministers," she explains. Most of the essays are written by pastors, two by Bishops, two by lay women, one by a sister, and one by a diaconal minister candidate. While it is written by women, the book is to be read by women and men, especially those in parish ministry.

I am a lay person interested in the ministries of daily life, so I found myself reading chapters "out of order," as led by the Table of Contents and the contributor bios found on page 188-192.I turned first to Octogenarian Marj Leegard's essay, "Ordinary Roles: The Ministry of Word and Care," and was drawn in, as always, to her way of seeing and teaching the sacred in life events. Then I found myself hopping into places I didn't expect to go, as in "Ordinary Hope: The Ministry of Redevelopment."

If I have a criticism with the book, it's with the titles. "The Ministry of Redevelopment" is told through the story of Future Hope--the real name and the real story of a boy who occasionally shows up for church. "The Ministry of Word and Care" is told through the events at the house immediately following a fatal and tragic farm accident.

Many, if not most of the readers, are likely to be parish professionals and students of theology, so the titles for this audience will work. For those of you, like me, who don't fall in the primary audience, please don't be stopped by the titles. Dip in, here and there, as the page turns and the Spirit leads, and you will find yourself blessed, as I did.

                    Book Description

                    Raku is a pottery technique in which the ware is quickly fired, removed from the kiln while it is hot and the glaze is molten, and completed in a post-firing phase outside the kiln. This useful handbook guides beginning and intermediate potters through each stage of raku, from its origins and history to clays and glazes, instructions on firing, combustion, and post-firing methods. Dozens of recipes are included for clay bodies and glazes, as well as recommendations for using commercial products. Detailed information is provided for building or buying raku kilns, with troubleshooting guidelines for firing and kiln design issues.

                    Author Steven Branfman has expanded and updated his original edition, including more information on slip resist/naked raku, raku saggar, fuming, vapor glazing, and other related techniques, and many more photos.

                    - Complete instructions for successful raku pottery
                    - Expanded color photo section
                    - Dozens of clay body and glaze recipes plus recommendations for commercial products

                    5 out of 5 stars Raku: A Practical Approach.......2006-01-15

                    A complete resource for raku firing. Specific technical information for kiln construction, as well as photos, glaze recipes and much discussion about experimental materials for reduction. If you had only one book to learn about raku tecniques,this should be the one.

                    5 out of 5 stars The Second Raku Bible.......2002-11-30

                    This is the second Raku Bible that I have used and referred to repeatedly over the years. There is a short section on what Raku is and the history of Raku, but then it quickly moves into the guts of technical information on Raku. Branfman includes clay recipes (for those who are interested in actually mixing clay) and several glaze recipes with some details on how they perform.
                    The real meat of the book is on kilns, building kilns, and firing a Raku kiln. Branfman covers firing in both an electric and a gas kiln. He also details many plans and techniques for building your own Raku kiln. Branfman also details many variations of firing methods including reduction firing, piece removal, and post firing reduction methods. Sprinkled throughout the book are great examples of finished pieces using many different styles and techniques that I have used as a repeated source of inspiration. Overall, the book is a very excellent text that covers the practical aspect of the Raku art form.

                    5 out of 5 stars Easy reading, filled with detailed information.......2001-08-26

                    Recently I got the idea of replacing my current electric kiln, and converting the old kiln to a gas-fired rake kiln. I posted a question on the ClayArt mailing list asking for advice on how to do this. Every single reply refered me to Steve Branfman's book! I quickly bought a copy, and found it to be every bit as good as advertised. In an readable, conversational style, Steve covers a wide range of topics, including some history, glaze formulations, types of kilns, firing advice, and health & safety. Where needed, he gives very detailed and specific technical information (the section on determining BTU requirements for burners was *exactly* what I needed). He also provides great recommendations on sources and suppliers. For anyone who wants to get started, or go further, with raku, this is a great book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Raku A Practical Approach.......2000-05-13

                    A very good resource for anyone who is interested in the Raku process. I would not recommend this book for novice Raku artists because of the technical terms used in the book. The author does expect you to know varios technical terms. I found this book very hepful to me as I have been a Raku artist for 2 years. This book is easy to read and the photos are great. There are also a few glaze recipes that I enjoyed experimenting with.

                    5 out of 5 stars This is one of the most complete books on raku I have seen........1997-09-27

                    I have been a potter for many years and recently decided to build a studio with a kiln in my home. This book was of immense help. It gives detailed instructions and ideas for every aspect of raku from building a kiln (many choices) to mixing glazes and clays, designing a studio, teaching a workshop to health and safety concerns. It has much more practical information than any other book on raku that I have seen. As the author states in the beginning of the book, though, it is not for the novice. He assumes you already have a fundamental knowledge of the art of ceramics. I have recommended it many times to other potters. Margaret Gooding

                              Book Description

                              Destruction of the world's tropical forests remains a dramatic problem. In the midst of this destruction, sustainable forest management (SFM) has grown from a theoretical concept to a set of practical, procedural guidelines for harvesting natural forests in a way that minimizes damage to forest and ecosystem, while maximizing sustainable economic value. Still, the commercial viability of SFM has not been clearly demonstrated. Precious Woods, LTD., a Swiss-founded corporation active in Costa RIca and Brazil, is one of the few companies in the world attempting to conduct SFM. This case study examines Precious Woods' efforts to establish a sustainable tropical forestry business in Brazil, and identifies both the company's challenges and potential.

                                Book Description

                                A complete nuts-and-bolts guide to designing, building, and managing the smart card system that's right for your company

                                Already a well-established medium of exchange in Europe, smart card technology has made major inroads in the North American market in the past few years. Visa and Mastercard are committed to replacing credit cards with them over the next five years, and Microsoft is racing to use them for e-commerce. Clearly, the time for asking "Why?" regarding smart cards has passed. The important question companies now should be asking themselves is "How?": how to plan, how to develop, how to implement, and how to manage the smart card system that is right for our company? This book provides complete, unbiased answers to these and all your technical and business questions about smart card systems.

                                Dreifus and Monk guide you step-by-step through the entire process of selecting, designing, building, and managing a smart card application tailored to your business. They supply numerous checklists to help guarantee that you make the correct technical decisions during each phase of the process. And they include real-world case studies illustrating successful smart card implementations in a variety of industries, including banking, manufacturing, entertainment, healthcare, and transportation. Crucial topics covered in detail include:
                                * Smart card architectures and standards
                                * Security and encryption
                                * Smart card operating systems
                                * Smart card application design and development
                                * Development tools
                                * Testing and certification

                                Smart Cards arms you with everything you need to know to make informed decisions about the smart card system that's right for your company.

                                1 out of 5 stars Proven irrelevant.......2002-05-03

                                Well, now it's 2002, and the the revolution has definitely not been televised. We've heard now from authors like these guys for about, oh, 10 years or so that smart cards are the next revolution. That it's just a matter of time before mag stripe cards are swept aside in this tidal wave of new technology.

                                Friends, it just ain't gonna happen here in the States. Despite massive attempts by GemPlus and other 'leaders' described in this book, the entire thing has been just one more marketing-driven attempt to force unneeded technology on the masses. The dog didn't hunt, and these 'visionaries' are now unwinding all their efforts here, sending thousands of programmers out on to the streets.

                                This thinly veiled advertisement, with very poor design and little original content, has suffered the ultimate indignity: history has rendered it all but irrelevant.

                                I bought this book hoping it would give some ideas on how smart card technology may offer new business opportunities for my software development company, but found nothing of the sort. I have not found an answer to a single question I had, for that matter. The laguage is horrible, information is presented poorly, lots of totally useless details and almost nothing on the subject I was mostly interested in: how (and why) a company would embrace this tachnology to make money.

                                1 out of 5 stars Informercial, don't buy it........2000-12-28

                                Very disappointing. I am 75% through this book and struggling to finish it. Whilst the book has some good information (smart card lingo, players in the industry, trends...etc) most are useless because the materials are so badly organised. Filling up the book with charts, diagrams and detailed reference tables of smart card standards does NOT make it a useful book, all are illrelevant without much deeper explanation. Remember when you were in high school, you copied a few paragraphs from one book and a few from an other to "write" an essay --- it reads just like that, very amateurish. A lot of the so called "case study" blah about how good/bad the technology is, but no details. It's an informercial.... "Buy my stuff, and I'm going to make you lots of money. This man with only a high school education bought my tape barely over 3 weeks and he is now making $5000 a week,....blah, blah, blah".... where is the bloody proof ?! It's a damn Monday night informercial. Oh, I actually work for a smart card company so I may be bias. Amazon should introduce half a point, this book is a bit below 1.

                                1 out of 5 stars Superficial not Smart.......2000-03-09

                                After reading this book I wasn't any smarter about smart cards. The charts and the introduction made me buy the book. But actually the book is very superficial. There is no real structure or framework that organizes the content. OK, there are chapters, but often it isn't at all clear why certain information is presented in a certain chapter. Also, it is not really clear how the different chapters are distinguished. The title of a chapter usually doesn't help you. Several pieces of information are presented over and over again in different chapters. Most of the information presented is common sense or well known software engineering principles. The information specific to smart cards is limited and not very detailed. Sometimes one could get the feeling that even the authors didn't really know more than the superficial information they present. A coworker of mine uses the term "consultant speak" for that kind of style. The charts and graphic are almost exclusively from other sources and not genuine to the book. They are usually only remotely related to what is discussed in the text and the authors don't bother explaining any of them. The case studies are not what you would normally expect from a case studies. They briefly mention a particular smart card project but don't really go into any details about technology or why certain design decisions were made. Most of the information given in the case study chapters is applicable to any kind of IT project. The check lists are pure common sense and sometimes unintentionally humorous. To sum it up: The book is easy to read but if you are serious about learning about smart cards, it doesn't help you at all. The claim to guide you through the whole process of a smart card project is a gross exaggeration. If you don't already know most of what you need to know from other sources, relying on this book alone will most likely make your project fail. The smart card specific information in the book could have easily been compressed into a nice 10 page white paper.

                                I have read this book and think it is useless. The author is very hard to understand and the technology is poorly explained.

                                Nearly everyone responds to a good yarn, and that's precisely the point behind The Story Factor by Annette Simmons. A "collaborative behavior" consultant to public and private organizations, Simmons argues that storytelling may just be the best management tool available to modern business leaders because it exerts influence in ways that other techniques cannot. And she doesn't suggest that stories be exclusively reserved for formal presentations, either; on the contrary, Simmons shows how they can be used effectively in small group settings and even one-on-one situations. She begins by describing six basic types that can be adapted to any circumstance (Who I Am, Why I Am Here, The Vision, Teaching, Values-In-Action, and I Know What You Are Thinking). She then offers pointers for finding them and advises that ideas be jotted down whenever they appear, built upon consistently, and practiced in private until the telling comes naturally. To that end, she includes helpful tips on presentation, noting that the words are only part of a package that includes body language, clothing, tone, and other components. Follow her lead and you'll likely never relate to any individual or group in the same way again. --Howard Rothman

                                "From the beginning of history, human life and leadership have been centered on stories-the stories of our past, who we are today, and what we may yet become. Telling stories and listening to other people's stories shapes the meaning of our experiences and helps us awaken hidden capacity. The Story Factor provides valuable tools for using storytelling as a means for self-discovery and as a springboard for creating a more meaningful and successful future. This is vital new reading."

                                4 out of 5 stars Impacting Your Story Culture by Listening First..........2007-09-29

                                Have you ever sat through a meeting where you could not understand what the person was talking about? Well, that person probably did not read this book...or, they are one of those curmudgeons that really don't belong telling stories in the first place...OK, OK, we all have stories, but not everyone can tell them well. The Story Factor touches many areas to help tell a story to gain credibility and capture the attention of your audience. Annette Simmons shares some insight into six types of stories outlined in the book:

                                * "Who Am I" Stories
                                * "Why I Am Here" Stories
                                * "The Vision" Story
                                * Teaching" Stories
                                * "Values-in-Action" Stories
                                * "I Know What You Are Thinking" Stories

                                By reading the book and connecting it to evoking emotion, engaging your audience, and empowering your listener to become active in their own stories, you can develop a positive impact on the story culture you may wish to create.

                                2 out of 5 stars not what I wanted.......2007-09-22

                                I finished this book in an afternoon. It does categorize stories and give examples, but I had expected better ways of explaining life more generally. What patterns are there in life stories? What roles are there at different times and places? How do "stories" help sort that out? I would have been better off just reading novels or historical narratives that address these things.

                                5 out of 5 stars Storytelling by a Proven Teller .......2007-04-10

                                Author Annette Simmons invites readers to get inside the story tellers skin and experience story telling vicariously. Annette has lived what she advocates. Furthermore, being a story teller myself, I resonate to Annette's dividing of stories in to major generic types.

                                4 out of 5 stars Storytelling.......2007-03-13

                                I found the book to be very helpful. It gives me a platform from which I can be more personable and relate info in a more interesting way.

                                5 out of 5 stars Interesting and insightful.......2007-01-12

                                If you think back to the last compelling presentation or conversation you had chances are what you remember are the stories. Annette Simmons provides a very readable account of why storytelling is so compelling and how it really can help reframe issues, defuse conflicts and, most importantly, make a personal connection with people. It's packed full of stories that can be adapted for you to use, but of course its best to find your own stories.

                                Annette provides plenty of reasons and logic behind why stories are good, but really her stories speak for themselves.

                                This is the only storytelling book I've read but I recommend it highly. I even bought a copy for a friend half way through reading it. If you're in a half mind whether to get it then I say just buy it. You won't regret it.

                                5 out of 5 stars A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-10-30

                                This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

                                I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

                                My favorite chapters were:

                                1. Initial business concerns
                                2. Your business' structure
                                3. Business start-up details
                                5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
                                7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
                                8. Obtaining the financing you need

                                The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

                                I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

                                Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

                                I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

                                When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!
