Book Description
Farmers and gardeners face all sorts of difficulties in the course of growing crops—weeds and insect pests, low levels of fertility, lack of water, soil compaction, and erosion of topsoil. Usually seen as separate issues and dealt with individually, weeds, insects, nematodes, and plant diseases are controlled by pesticides; nutrient deficiencies are overcome through use of commercial fertilizers; drought stress is mitigated through irrigation; and compacted layers of soil are broken up by machinery. But all of these problems can be eliminated, or at least alleviated, by proper soil management that emphasizes organic matter build-up and maintenance.
At the forefront of a reawakening interest in sustainable agriculture, this book is written for farmers, gardeners, extension specialists, and others interested in the practical stewardship of our natural resources. Fred Magdoff, noted for his expertise in soil fertility, presents the latest information on soil organic matter and explains modern management techniques along with the best of the older practices. He opens with a discussion of the nature of organic matter and its function in the soil and then reviews practices for building up and maintaining soil organic matter, including reduced tillage, residue management, and crop rotations. A final selection offers an overview of the dynamics and chemistry of organic matter.

Description:
Soil organic matter (SOM) has been adopted as an indicator of soil fertility based on the rationale that SOM contributes significantly to soil physical, chemical, and biological properties that affect vital ecosystem processes of forests in Australia. A study was undertaken to evaluate the utility of SOM as an indicator of SFM at two long-term experimental sites in native eucalypt forests, including Silvertop Ash (E. sieberi L. Johnson) and Mountain Ash (E. regnans F. Muell.) in Victoria. This study examines the relative contributions made by various sources of carbon in soil profiles (0-30cm) of forest soils, viz. mineral soil (
<2mm), plant residues, charcoal (>2mm), and rock fragments (>2mm). The long-term changes in these fractions in response to management-induced soil physical disturbance and fire (unburnt, moderate and high intensity) were evaluated. After 10 years, carbon levels in the fine soil fraction (soil
<2mm including fine charcoal) were similar across the range of fire disturbance classes in Mountain Ash forest (20-25kg/m^2) and Silvertop Ash forest (7-8kg/m^2). Likewise differences in carbon associated with other fractions, viz. microbial biomass, labile carbon, plant residues and rock fragments were comparatively small and could not be attributed to fire disturbance. Burning increased the charcoal carbon fraction from 5 to 23kg/m^2 in Mountain Ash forest and from 1 to 3kg/m^2 in Silvertop Ash forest. Taking into account, the percentage area affected by fire, increases in total soil carbon in these forests were estimated at 25 and 7t/ha, respectively. The effects of physical disturbance of soils were examined at one site in Mountain Ash forest where soil cultivation was used as site preparation rather than the standard practice of burning of logging residues. Total carbon in soil profiles decreased from 29 to 21kg/m^2 where soil disturbance was severe, i.e. topsoil removed and subsoil disturbed. This was mainly due to a decrease in charcoal carbon from 6.8 to 1.7kg/m^2 but severe soil disturbance also increased the amount of carbon associated with rock fragments from 1.6 to 3.5kg/m^2. Management-induced fire increased the coarse charcoal content of soil profiles substantially, thus increasing total carbon content as well as the proportion of recalcitrant carbon in SOM. In contrast, there was little change in the carbon content of the fine soil fraction including the labile and biologically active fractions indicating that these SOM fractions most relevant to ecosystem processes showed little long-term impact from soil disturbance and fire. Conventional sampling of the fine soil fraction (
<2mm) only represented between 50% and 70% of total carbon in the soil profiles. In contrast, total nitrogen in this fraction represented between 75% and 90% of the nitrogen in soil profiles and was less affected by changes in the contributions of N made by coarse fractions. Monitoring of soil N rather than C as an indicator of soil fertility and SFM may be more appropriate for forest soils with significant charcoal content.

Book Description
The functioning of soils and their ability to supply nutrients, store water, release greenhouse gases, modify pollutants, resist physical degradation and produce crops within a sustainable management system is profoundly influenced by their organic matter content. This volume contains papers from an international conference held by the British Society of Soil Science in Edinburgh in September 1999. It explores the results of recent research studies examining how organic matter functions in soils, factors affecting organic matter quality and quantity and how management of organic matter can be optimized in order to achieve sustainable farming practices.

Book Description
This book provides a dramatic lesson illustrating the need for international cooperation to manage bank crises and to set common standards to help prevent financial crises in the future.
Book Description
In businesses across the board, success or failure is often determined not simply by what we say but how we say it. The voice is our single most important communication tool. It defines who we are and affects how others respond to us. Voice expert Jeffrey Jacobi, who has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Business Week, and USA Today, now shares his proven strategies for developing a voice with the power to command attention and get respect; a voice that can in a sale, close a deal, impress an employer and motivate people. Chockfull of self-tests, skill-building exercises, and sample speeches, this comprehensive resource gives anyone who speaks on the job the practical tools to send a clear and persuasive message. Step by step, speakers will learn how to pinpoint and overcome common problems such as "sloppy" pronunciation, "rapid-fire" pace, "child-like" lilt, nasal whine, monotonous tone, and off-putting accents. Then, they'll master the secrets to building vocal strength and variety to keep each listener's interest, and speaking before a crowd with poise and confidence. Tony Randall succinctly sums it: "For all of us, each new day is composed of a series of performances. And that means voice-and how we use it. If you ever want to impress, convince, sell, amuse-or have that special someone feel that you're special-I recommend Jeffrey Jacobi's applause-winning How to Say It With Your Voice." Jeffrey Jacobi is a nationally renowned voice coach trained at Juilliard. The director of Jacobi Voice Development, he has worked with executives from the cream of Fortune 500 companies, including AT&T, American Express, DuPont, and IBM, as well as entertainers and public figures. A member of the Speech Communications faculty of New York University, he is also the author of The executive Voice Trainer (Prentice Hall). He lives in New York City.
Customer Reviews:
Very Good Pronouncing Word Book!.......2007-06-11
This a very good pronouncing word book that makes you realize how to make your words powerful. You use the information first in the book and then you go to the 30 something minute cassette tape to hear examples of people you immediately recognize as the wrong way voice communicators. I learnt a lot from this book and I enjoyed every page.
Too little info in the CD.......2006-02-10
I was a little disappointed that the CD come with the book contains not much - especially the part that suppose to help you to practice your voice.
I like this book.......2005-05-06
If English is your second language, it is a very useful book.
NOT VERY GOOD!!!!!.......2002-11-29
I have always admired people who spoke with charisma, confidence and seemed as if they have had voice coaching. Thats what I wanted to do too!!!! Sadly though, this book/CD is not for that, the CD bored me completely, I have no problem pronouncing words but I wanted to know how to project it to get power, confidence etc. this book didnt show it- it is for people who have to learn how to use each sound properly.
So if your'e looking for a book which shows you how to PROJECT CONFIDENCE, POISE AND POWER ITS NOT FOR YOU!!
Very happy.......2002-06-10
Congratulations for the way you do business. I am very happy for the way you handled my purchase. On time, well packed, the datail of book mark and the request for feedback.
The book is very good, ease of understand and a must for thouse who sing or speak a lot.
Customer Reviews:
Other books on the topic are 100% better.......2006-04-01
This is the first time that I have ever been motivated to write a review. There is virtually no useful information here which cannot be garnered from other more comprehensive and literate books on the topic.
It is written from a very personal viewpoint, which would be interesting if the author was a writer. As it is, this is one of the worst books I have read in several years.
A waste of my time ..........2006-02-02
An overt advertisement for their business in Costa Rica, I found virtually no helpful information here. If you want to know the history of the people (and therefore understand things like squatters' rights), read "The Ticos". If you are investing in land or a business ANYWHERE, know the language and get a second legal opinion before signing at the X. Check crime stats on the web for free, and keep in mind that a city is a city - use good old common sense in all that you do. Make several trips covering different regions and grow your "network" each time you return. When it comes together, you'll be ready. Pura Vida!
I found it helpful.......2004-02-20
I did like that it was "part diary, part travelogue, part advice column" instead of so straightforward a text. Desultory, yes, but inviting--sort of like REAL travel and life abroad!
Another book I found helpful before my "relocation-research trip" was a photo-essay book called, "Costa Rica: The Last Country The Gods Made." It too gave me a feeling for the country in a randomized sort of way. But that's not to say it wasn't wonderful information and insight into Tico culture--like Borner's book!
Save Your Money.......2003-08-26
The authors can't be serious! I really didn't get any benefit from this book. I just moved to Costa Rica and didn't learn much from it. It just doesn't contain enough info. for the potential resident. I read other books on the subject and prefer "The New Golden Door" and "Choose Costa Rica." The authors of these guides really seem to know the scoop.
Tessa Hits It Nicely.......2003-07-18
My wife and I read Tessa's book before going to Costa Rica with the idea that we might settle there as she and her husband did. Not only did we get great info from Tessa's book, we made a personal connection through it that led us to having a fabulous time and learning way more than we had anticipated. This book is a must read for anyone contemplating moving to Costa Rica. Cheap way to benefit from Tessa's experiences.
