Following the extremely popular Charleston Style, Susan Sully has brought us another book about a southern city, Savannah Style. In this collection of photographs and stories of 20 houses, inspired by Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt (who gives a charming introduction), she builds a dark atmosphere in words. Her writing is intelligent and lyrical, and brings to the mind images that, unfortunately, the photographs cannot compete with--oddly disconnected, they seem to be the result of a botched mandate to capture the rich shadiness of her writing. Most of the exteriors are too much in shadow to see details, and a suspicious yellow-orange cast looms over many of the interiors. Weighed down by its predecessor, Berendt's novel, and its gloomy photographs, Savannah Style seems to have too much weight to bear for one book. Still, the imagery of Sully's writing make this coffee-table book a surprisingly good read. --Juliette Cezzar

Book Description

Savannah is a city of mercurial history and enigmatic charms. Home to cotton barons, shipping magnates, antiques dealers, and tireless preservationists, it has helped define Southern elegance, manner, and style for more than two centuries.

From the slightly faded grandeur of the Second Empire baroque Thomas Levy House, filled with antique maps, prints, books, and other curiosities, to the phantasmal, Proustian decor of the high style Greek Revival Knapp House, the 20 houses featured in this book express the city's alternating moods of decadence and decorum. Quite often, a serene exterior-- designed in a Georgian, federal, or restrained Greek Revival style-- will relinquish its polite composure to an ingenious play of interior whimsy or flight of decorative fancy. Elegant town houses designed by William Jay, John Ash, Isaiah Davenport, and William Gibbons Preston, gracious plantation manors, and unpretentious summer cottages are featured in detail in word and image. A delightful foreword by John Berendt acts as an informative addendum to Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and an excellent introduction to this book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Intelligent.......2006-08-10

Is it possible to be in love with a book? When I ordered Savannah Style, I could hardly wait for its arrival. I wasn't disappointed - in fact, it is even better than I anticipated, having read other reviews prior to purchase. The photographs are gorgeous and reflective, and entice one to have a certain mood when reading this wonderful book. And read it I did, because it is not only beautiful, but intelligent as well. Although Sully is intent on the mystery element of Savannah, it is still a beautiful book to own and love. The question is, 'When can I immigrate?'

5 out of 5 stars Eccentric and Brooding.......2001-08-01

I believe that the photographs capture the essence of Savannah. Susan Sully has provided us with a sketchbook of Savannah's mystery and charm. The over the top decorating schemes are perfectly matched to the quirky and brooding characters who inhabit these fabulous southern mansions. Every photograph evoked a glimpse of a place we would all secretly love to share.

    Book Description

A milling district along the Mississippi River. A railroad bridge on Washington Avenue. Jim's Hamburgers in Duluth. A spiral staircase in the Schmidt Brewery. These are the spaces that capture the moods of Minnesota's prewar era. These are the everyday places where ordinary people lived and worked. These are the images that show us the remnants of a city's past.

In The Quiet Hours, Mike Melman records a vanishing era of Minnesota's towns and cities through a series of seventy black-and-white photographs taken from 1985 to 2002. Working in the half-light of predawn hours, Melman brings a new perspective to familiar places, one shaped by his training as an architect and his particular affinity for old buildings. Melman's atmospheric photographs give us insight into the bygone life of a city where we had not thought to look for one before.

In his essay, Bill Holm compares Melman's work to that of Walt Whitman and Carl Sandburg, artists who embrace and celebrate the urban experience. Holm writes, "These photographs take us a long way toward an understanding of that mighty heart of a city. . . . These are very American pictures in their stubbornness, their integrity, and their dogged affection for the working-class life buried inside them."

Through his artistic and historic images, Melman exposes the speed at which American cities change and presents a gritty yet contemplative portrait of urban Minnesota.

Mike Melman's photographs have been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums in the Twin Cities and have appeared in Architecture Minnesota and Minnesota History.

Bill Holm is a poet and essayist living in Minneota, Minnesota. Among his recent books are Eccentric Islands: Travels Real and Imaginary (2000) and The Heart Can Be Filled Anywhere on Earth: Minneota, Minnesota (1996).

    4 out of 5 stars Quiet Hours.......2007-08-22

Quiet Hours is a great book by a very nice guy. The images are calm, relaxing, and quiet - just as its title implies. The images show us a side of the city not often seen: a city without people or motion. The images make you feel like you are alone, walking though the night in a wintery place. You can almost hear your footsteps as your feet creak on the frozen snow, feel the cold air enter your nose as you breathe, and the snowflakes landing on your face. The Quiet Hours: City Photographs

    5 out of 5 stars Commotion free.......2006-12-20

I had never heard of Mike Melman until I saw I reference to this book in Kelly Povo's excellent 'Roadsides: Images of the American Landscape' and so I bought a copy and I'm pleased I did.

The title is correct, these are probably the quietest photos you'll ever see. Melman had the neat idea of capturing the pre-dawn hours of the Minnesota, Twin Cities. No people, no vehicles, and no activity that you expect to see and hear during daylight. Many of the photos are given an extra twist because they were taken in wintertime and the visual presence of snow creates an additional awareness of silence in the viewer.

Of the seventy photos twenty-nine are interiors and as such I don't think they quite have the impact of the exteriors but they still carry the theme of the book. Many of the outside ones work so well using the brightness of security lights (and don't forget the snow) of industry or sometimes just streetlights creating shapes of buildings yet still revealing plenty of detail.

The book is fortunately in the formal photobook style: landscape, one photo per page (in 175dpi on quality paper) generous margins with a location and date caption. Simple and elegant, it lets these quiet images capture your thoughts.

          Book Description

This book offers an introduction to medieval economic thought, as it emerges from the works of the twelfth to the fifteenth century academic theologians, lawyers and other sources. Using Italian merchants' writings, vernacular poetry, parliamentary legislation, and manorial court rolls, it discusses property, charity, the role of money, weights, measures, coinage, trade, fair price and fair wage. It makes a relatively neglected subject accessible by exploring the relationship between theory and practice.

          Download Description

This book is an introduction to medieval economic thought, mainly from the twelfth to the fifteenth centuries, as it emerges from the works of academic theologians and lawyers and other sources - from Italian merchants' writings to vernacular poetry, Parliamentary legislation, and manorial court rolls. It raises a number of questions based on the Aristotelian idea of the mean, the balance and harmony underlying justice, as applied by medieval thinkers to the changing economy. How could private ownership of property be reconciled with God's gift of the earth to all in common? How could charity balance resources between rich and poor? What was money? What were the just price and the just wage? How was a balance to be achieved between lender and borrower and how did the idea of usury change to reflect this? The answers emerge from a wide variety of ecclesiastical and secular sources.

          Book Description

`[Meikle's] aim is to make proper sense of Aristotle's economic thinking, and in a detailed, lucid discussion he succeeds brilliantly.' Peter Jones, Sunday Telegraph Aristotle's work on money was the backbone of medieval thinking about commerce, and it is still the foundation of Catholic teaching about market behaviour. Marx's theory of economic value was based on it, and so was much of the economic analysis of money into the present century. In the past hundred years the interpretation of Aristotle's work on money has become chaotic. Economists claim Aristotle as the father of economics, while classical scholars hold that Aristotle had no economic theory at all. It is argued here that Aristotle does develop a coherent theory of economic value, wealth, exchange, and money, but that this theory cannot be assimilated to what we call economics because its metaphysical foundation is incompatible with the Humean metaphysics on which economics is built. From an Aristotelian standpoint, ethics and economics are competitors over the same ground, as rival sources of reasons for decision-making in the public realm, and they cannot be reconciled.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on the subject.......2001-03-05

There are very few thinkers, if any, whose work has been discussed by others as much as Artistotle. His influence on western thought on almost any subject has been immense. Dryden's lament that humanity have made the Stagirite's "torch their universal light" gives a measure of his influence. So the claim that Scott Meikle's book is the best on the subject is very strong indeed. But I think it is wholly justified. For Meikle discusses only the great philosopher's economic thought. And he is a master of his subject. His knowledge of the texts is profound matched only by his mastery of the literature, ancient and modern, his comments relevant, his prose beautiful and his arguments convincing. Even though he is not an economist he displays a surpisingly deep understanding of economic theory and history of economic thought.

His book is a collection of essays with enough structure to be read as a complete book. He examines A.'s analysis in Nicomachean Ethics and Politics and discusses modern interpretations of his thought. He argues for the existence of an economic thought in Aristotle, against the arguments of authorities such as Schumpeter (with his almost patronising view) or Finley who wrote the (new) Palgrave entry on Aristotle. He also argues convincingly against a neoclassical interpretation of Aristotle, a view that has crept in even in authoritative translations of the Nicomachean Ethics text.

If you want to understand the great philosoopher's economic thought, Meikle's book is the place to start....

this was an intriging book that lead to my revival. Without this both of my views towards economic behaviors and theories would not be able to exist and penetrate throught the ills of an intangible society. Both philosophy and economics deal with the soul individual and aristotle a genius of all time deals with many profound issues that the individual must command to gather success and demand virtue.

There are so many dumb books on the communication process this one is really great and different. When the author talks about creatvity you realize he really understands the process. I found this book fun, irreverent, witty, useful, and original. Great stuff!

Roy Underhill's "Krushchev's Shoe" is simply an excellent guide to becoming an engaging speaker, presenter, even writer. Through delightful personal anecdotes and voyages ranging from the nature of the creative process to voice spectograms illustrating the difference between a good speaker and a weak one, Underhill provides the reader with a brilliantly written, wise, and funny book about the nature of public presentation. The book is amply illustrated with woodcuts and sketches driving his points home. As a teacher I cannot stress how useful this book is. I have recommended it to a program designed to teach teachers how to teach (better). Many books of this nature are deadly to read--this one is great. His chapter called "The Morning After" alone is worth the price of the book.

5 out of 5 stars The Woodwright Speaks - And Audiences Listen.......2000-12-13

Think of selling this show to network, even PBS, executives. One walks into the office and says, "I have a great idea for a TV how-to show where a guy goes out and cuts down a tree, then he teaches you to use traditional hand tools and make it into a replica of the chair in which Jefferson sat while he wrote the Declaration of Independence. Once you watch it, you can go out and do it yourself! Whaddya think?" One would have to expect as ungraceful an exit from the producer's office as the construction worker who found the singing frog in the classic Warner Bros. cartoon.

Well, that is exactly the show, The Woodwright's Shop, that Roy Underhill has been able to keep on television for more than 20 years. Of course, if most hobbyist woodworkers are going to watch a "how-to" show and make something presented by the host, they are more likely to follow Norm Abrams' measured drawings and run to Home Depot for the lastest tool to really make the sawdust fly. But, audiences watch Underhill's show not only for the extreme mastery he shows of his craft, but also his mastery of captivating an audience with a great storytelling approach.

This is the essence of Krushchev's Shoe. Roy Underhill takes what he has learned in demonstrating a craft totally foreign to modern audiences, both on his television show and at Colonial Williamsburg, and shares it with his readers so that we may become better communicators.

This book is helpful to anyone who dreads standing before a crowd and opening one's mouth. It is particularly helpful though to those of us who train others to be effective communicators. Museum professionals, theme park managers, teachers, etc, may all find some use in the suggestions Underhill makes in Krushchev's Shoe.

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

                            My favorite chapters were:

                            1. Initial business concerns
                            2. Your business' structure
                            3. Business start-up details
                            5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
                            7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
                            8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!
