Book Description
This beautiful souvenir book captures the visual delights, both man-made and natural, of the newly renovated Getty Villa, set to reopen in 2005. More than seventy color photographs artfully record the stunning architecture and grounds of the Villa. Visiting the new Villa will reap numerous
aesthetic rewards, for all the senses. Seeing the Getty Villa will surely reward the visual one.
The book is a tour guide in image and text, taking readers into and through the site, beginning with the cobblestone "Roman road" and the dramatic new entranceway, and then into the Museum entry court and sun-filled atrium. The visual narration continues into the refurbished Museum building, with
stops for readers to admire the galleries of Greek, Roman, and Etruscan works of art before perusing the landscaped gardens, fountains, wall paintings, mosaics, and newly built outdoor amphitheater. In sum, the lush pictures and concise words compose a portrait of a place that will enchant and
surprise.
Seeing the Getty Villa will appeal to lovers of architecture, photography, and ancient art and will make a lovely gift book as well.
Customer Reviews:
complements your memories of the Villa.......2007-04-12
If you have the luck or good taste to visit the renovated Getty Villa, you might well be tempted to buy this book. It has professionally taken photographs of many parts of the Villa. Including the gardens and the exteriors of the buildings. Set against a heavy backdrop of trees, with occasional glimpses of the Pacific Ocean. A nice complement to your memories of the place.
The narrative also explains the main collections housed there. And the choice of architecture and gardens. Even the flowers were carefully picked as representative of those found near the Roman ruins in Italy.
Conversely, if you have never been to the Villa, reading the book might be good motivation. Quite different from the Getty Center, which has a totally modern ambience.

Cosmatesque Ornament: Flat Polychrome Geometric Patterns in Architecture
ASIN: 0965526828 |
Book Description
Precious, brilliantly colored stones arranged by skilled artisans in intricate patterns that follow the designs of master architects have been an important aspect of Italian architecture for centuries. In this book, Kim Williams provides a detailed overview of these beautifully designed pavements. From the second-century Pantheon in Rome to the twentieth-century Santa Maria Novella train station in Florence, Williams traces the evolution of pavement design, points to characteristic design elements of each age, and explains the various techniques and materials used.
Analyzing the pavements in relationship to their particular architectural context, she shows how these designs heighten the architectural experience and provide a key to understanding architects' intentions. Williams also offers an in-depth analysis of individual pavements in order to shed light on the proportional systems, geometric constructions, symbolism and historical sources for the design. Through her accurately measured, exquisitely rendered drawings of the pavements, many of which have never before been documented, these pavements are given their full due as architecture and craft.
Customer Reviews:
Clearly inspiring!.......2007-05-24
I discovered this book searching for information on Cosmati designs and was delighted with it when it arrived. After looking at murky photos and trying to understand garbled descriptions of geometry in other books, I appreciated the fabulous painstaking in-plane illustrations. The "reader-friendly" (at least to an artist) explanations of mathematics and geometry were an enlightening bonus. This book will be particulary helpful to designers and others who want clarity, great presentation, and concise information.
Ms. Williams gives the stone lovers among us a gift........1999-10-23
This stunning look into pavement design of the past 2000 years is brilliantly executed--from the detailed drawings to the in-depth analysis of mathematical principles and design principles/patterns, this book is a treat for my eyes and my mind. In working on my PhD in the stone and paving methods of Rome (and beyond), I've found Ms. Williams book fills a hole in academia left vacant for far too long. You love architecture/history/church building/math/ or design? You must have this gorgeous gift.
A book which beautifully answers some fundamental questions.......1998-09-12
Wonderfully conceived, researched and illustrated, this is a book which beautifully answers some of the fundamental questions as to the why and how of paving. When I walk through the majestic spaces mentioned in Ms. Williams book I will do so with my curious eyes glued to the ground for a change. Truly a fantastic book; a good read be it for the layman or as a much needed point of reference for the learnèd. The illustrations are almost as good as being there.
Amazing reproduction of outstanding marble pavements........1998-02-08
This is a must book for history students of the Roman and Tuscan buildings. Contains 58 outstanding drawings of examples of Italian art pavemennt and the text explains them in detail. All architects and designers need a copy.

Pleasant Guide.......2005-10-12
I haven't traveled to Yorkshire since buying this guide, so I haven't had a chance to verify all the info for myself, but it is a pleasant, easy-to-read guide. I'm bothered by the number of typos in it, as well as that much of the information is very vague (mentioning sites without maps or directions for finding them), but I do feel it's helping me plan my itinerary. Word of warning: I bought this as well as Hidden Inns of Yorkshire, and the content is largely duplicative. I'd recommend one or the other - not both.

Yorkshire: A New Perspective.......2001-01-07
Yorkshire Moors & Dales was the first book I bought of the Country Series by Rob Talbot and Robin Whiteman, and it led me in turn to buy each new book as I have found it. Of all the "picture books" about the English countryside,I enjoy this series most. Talbot and Whiteman present a sharp clarity of detail and uniqueness that go beyond the usual photographic angle and standard text, helping the reader become a part of a scene, rather than just the viewer of a photograph.
Book Description
The 2nd edition of the Hidden Inns of Yorkshire has been completely redesigned to include a new cover, new page layouts is printed in full colour. It also now includes even more pubs and inns in this beautiful county. The Hidden Inns series of regional guides covers "hidden" pubs and inns throughout the United Kingdom. The series originates from the enthusiastic suggestions of the landladies and landlords of inns reviewed in the Hidden Places series of travel guides and from Hidden Places readers who want to be directed to traditional inns with atmosphere and character, which are so much a part of our British heritage. The inns reviewed in the book may have been coaching inns and have definitely been a part of the history of the village or town in which they are located for many, many years. A Travel Publishing representative has visited all of the inns reviewed which all serve food and drink. Many also offer the visitor accommodation. The Hidden Inns of Yorkshire is packed with a variety of different pubs and inns. There is an informative introductory narrative in each chapter containing historical facts, important landmarks and places to visit, all illustrated with coloured photographs. A full page is devoted to each pub or inn and contains a full colour photograph, full name, address and telephone number, directions on how to get there, descriptive narrative and a handy summary of opening hours, food served, credit cards accepted, accommodation provided, other facilities offered, entertainment as well as local places of interest and local activities available. The new edition includes an attractive redesigned cover that incorporates a picture of the Blacksmiths Arms in Naburn, Yorkshire.

Book Description
This book deals with a subject of profound importance to understanding the place of the modern corporation in a democratic society. This is the inherent conflicts between the interest of corporate owners (the shareholders), the interest of the larger society, and the interest of the managers who run the corporations. Managers have created a shared professional ideology that is designed to preserve their autonomy. To protect itself from unbridled corporate power, government has enacted a myriad regulations to check this power. In Managers vs. Owners, the authors describe how, in different eras the balance between corporate power and government regulation has changed with the interests of society as a whole. The authors conclude by looking at the impact of collective investor action--especially institutional investors--on the efforts by managers to preserve their autonomy.

Customer Reviews:
Women are leaders of the future.......2003-03-21
"Liberate the Leader" by Claudia Rose celebrates the possibilities of leadeship by women. Since I believe that women are wired better than men for leading roles that require compassion, collaboration and advocacy for a cause, I see this as a most important book. I have known Dr. Rose as a student and later as a colleague of mine, and consider her to be an outstanding thinker and writer who is also a person of action. This book is a must for women interested in leadership and for men intrested in unerstanding them well.
So many women get in the way of their own success.......2001-03-29
Dr. Rose gives women the courage to lead in the same way that Suze Orman gives women the "courage to be rich." The best part of this book is that it has very insightful activities like journaling and writing a commitment statement. If YOU dedicate a few weeks of your time to working through Liberate the Leader and completing all the recommended exercises, you will be able to do ANYTHING. This book is required for any woman who has a bigger dream for her life!
Essential reading for women........2001-03-08
Dr. Claudia, thank you so much for writing this book! I thoroughly enjoyed reading it this weekend, and was encouraged to spend some reflecting on its lessons and their application in my life. What a useful set of tools you have created for women!
Inspiring, Powerful, and an Absolute Must.......2001-02-04
In Liberate the Leader, Dr. Claudia Rose, provides readers far more than exceptional content. Unlike so many books addressing the all-important topic of leadership, Dr. Rose's treatment is substantively sound while being personally compelling. The likely reason she is able to carry off this unique combination with such grace is that this book is her own personal statement--and indeed, personal journey. Artfully woven among the multiple case studies of those she has met and worked with, are other stories of equal importance. They are stories from her own experience--indeed, defining-moment experiences, that contributed to liberating the resilient leader hosted within her own being. In Liberate the Leader, Dr. Rose may share generously about herself, but this book is not exclusively an autobiography. It is a book about and for all women who want to be all they are and should be. A caveat to readers. Plan to read this book uninterrupted. You will not want to put it down.
