5 out of 5 stars Exelente reference book........2007-10-01

I always was thinking in buy or not this book becasue of some other customer opinions, so i took the risk and bought it.
Great book, a lot of information regrading tips for inductor, transformer, softstart, step-down and flyback, it has many pages about everything abouth SMPS and Linear Supply.
If you want a book for reference on SMPS, buy this one, it has many examples, calculations, etc, and is a pleasure read this book.
You will receive what you pay.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and enjoyable.......2006-09-17

I bought this book as a complement to Abraham I. Pressman's Switching Power Supply Design.

These two books are very similar, but do not overlap all that much. I am glad to have them both.

This book can be used as a textbook or as a reference. It is so well organised you can find what you need very fast through the table of contents. Concepts are supported by schematics and graphs.

I am using this book to learn analog design and to learn to build my own switching power supplies.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for its purpose.......2006-06-02

I recently purchased both this book, and Switching Power Supply Design by Abraham I. Pressman. I had cursory knowledge of SMPS from datasheets and appnotes from National Semiconductors and IRF.

Overall, i like the other book better. The chapter layouts speak to the intended purpose of the books. In this book, the progression is from the start of an off-line power supply to then end. instead of starting with what the switching power supply is, and such, this book starts with input circuitry and startup methods. some suitable off-line topolgies are detailed. It is only later in the book that the basic switching power supplies, like the buck converter are detailed. It makes sense -- these supplies are billed for regulation in the book.

I found some of this book annoying. for instance, the author often refers to bifilar windings. there is no glossary entry for this. the index refers to multiple pages where "bifilar" is mentioned, but it is never defined. Similarly, "flyback" is not defined.

if you want to learn power supplies, i reccomend the book by Abraham I. Pressman over this one.

5 out of 5 stars What an adventure!.......2002-12-12

I did the right thing - I ordered this AND the venerable Abrahamson book.

Up until that time I had only discerned the subject in hints and veiled inter departmental discussions - and it was the start of a wonderful two months period in which so much was revealed - I have rarely enjoyed a book so much! Now look, I don't work for Mr Amazon.com, but I would urge you to get both. This book (the one by Keith Billings) has lots of detail which the Abrahamson book skips a wee bit. They dovetail together beautifully - and the Abrahamson book includes a bit more breadth on the possible topologies. One of my favorite chapters in THIS book is the excellent exposition on biploar and FET drive circuits. Its made very clear - this man is a BORN teacher...

This book even tells you how to select fuses, filter capacitors (the point being that the values you chose last month might well be right, but after this text you will know with far greater confidence, as it were)

I must say that the one thing that both books are a little light on is the subject of CUK convertors, which I will have to get wisdom on from elsewhere I guess. The other thing that NEITHER books mention, which in fact is hard to find, is the design of planar transformers. This is a complex area involving quite a lot of maths, so I've been told. You can find some material in IEEE transactions on power electronics, and similar journals, but you may have to hunt a bit. Philips / Ferroxcube are good for this, too.

The Abrahamson book covers current fed convertors. This includes a section on flyback current fed convertors - in which I think he forgot to elaborate on the case where the input transformer returns to the input, rather than the output, which appears to reduce input ripple and improves the power factor. But this case is handled quite well in the references given at the end of the chapter, so no matter. Its a very exciting chapter - but the Billings book doesn't cover them at all, which is a pity, since there's quite a lot of utility for these very stable topologies, involving quite light voltage and current strain on the switching transistors.

I wish the books could go on even further, but all I can be is grateful...

I must say also that the safety aspect of design is covered well in both books, both European and American.

This book does an excelent job of providing facts and information needed to design switchmode supplies. It gives numerical examples and shows the underlying theories.

3 out of 5 stars HDBK of Transformer Design.......2006-08-08

The book seems somewhat out-dated and lacks a complete mathematical approach, however, is has been a very useful text as a companion to other texts that I have on this and related subjects. When I first perused the book I was dissapointed in the seemingly lack of mathematical analysis, but on closer examination and actual use of the book, I have found it to be quite useful and would recommend it to those who not particularly interested in a highly rigorous text.

4 out of 5 stars MTS LAB.......2005-09-10

Good amount of theory and practical construction data.
Includes good thermal considerations.
Includes high frequency inductors and transformers.
Very useful as a reference for design.

2 out of 5 stars Not practical - very disappointing.......2005-06-13

I've read through this book and I can's say I'm any closer to understanding how to design a transformer than when I started. There are very view practical examples. The text is vague on nearly every subject it discusses. There is no discussion on how how to select a core size, or transformers for switching power supplies. There is a lot of discussion about things no-one cares about such as procurement practice, and quality assurance.

2 out of 5 stars Academic: bla bla bla.......2001-02-04

I bought this book hoping to get learn how to design a step up transformer ( a lower voltage to a higher one). The information in this book can be divided into two categories:

1) things you already know 2) things that you are not interested in

No attempt is made to present material in an intuitive format. Another weakness of the book is that several fromulas are presented with variables that are neither defined or explained. If you are interested in building you're own transformers don't waste your money on this book. The only value it has is as a reference for few formulas. There is little practical, useful information if you are looking to construct a specialty transformer for a design project.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent hands on guide to transformer design.......2001-09-06

This is the standard by which all other practical transformer design guides are judged. It uses a simple step by step approach to introduce the user to basic design. It then expands the scope to include effeciency, temperture rise, pulse tx design, power, current tx, and many others. Written in a manner that is accessible to those with basic high school algebra and physics experience,it is also an excellent reference for those who are trained EE's.

If your not an BSEE but have a basic background in electricity this is a good book 4 you, especially if you need a simple but custom transformer, or wish to learn the basics of xformer design...this book shows you with the step by step approach to design and fabrication of your own transformers. It sure helped me. I am sorry to see it out of print but cherish the fact that I have a copy on my bookshelf!

        Book Description

The years between the wars were the great age of the cartoon character. The adventures of Mickey Mouse, Popeye, and Donald Duck were followed avidly by millions. Even the political leaders of the era were known to millions as cartoon characters--gawky, bespectacled Woodrow Wilson, balloon-like Mussolini, and the moustache men--Hitler, Stalin, Neville Chamberlain, and Ramsey Macdonald.

Comic, mordant, and irreverent, political cartoons reveal more about popular concerns in this period of rising nationalism and aggression than most official documents or journalism. Published in newspapers and magazines with wide circulations, they "made sense" to the ordinary reader. Over fifty years later, that sense of immediate identification has been lost, and these political cartoons now need detailed explanation.

International in scope, Between the Wars covers all the great political and social issues of the interwar years, as they were revealed through the cartoonists' eyes. Roy Douglas's greatest gift is for concise, clear explanation, placing each cartoon into its historical context.

Douglas traces the decay of hope in the 1920s as it became fear of war in the early 1930s and determination that Fascism "must be stopped" at the end of the decade. These cartoons, intended for the man and woman "on the street" in Europe, North America, the Soviet Union, and Asia, mirror changing attitudes and beliefs as these nations prepared for war.

5 out of 5 stars It shows an aspect of total war that is underappreciated.......2004-06-16

With the advent of universal literacy, cartoons do not have the broad breadth of impact they once had, but they still have the potential for great depth. Like all other citizens in their nations during the Second World War, the talents of the cartoonists were also channeled into the war effort. This book is a collection of some of the best cartoons published in some of the warring nations during the time of war. They are from England, France (both Free and Vichy), the Soviet Union, the United States and Germany.
From them, you are taken back to those times and can revisit what was in the case of the English and American cartoons the opinion of a large percentage of the public. However, the Soviet and German cartoons were obviously displaying the messages that the government wanted the cartoonists to present. The historical context of each cartoon is thoroughly explained, as well as the symbolism of every component of the image. This really helps you to understand what the cartoonist is trying to communicate and makes the book a lesson in history.
As a student of history, I found this collection to be a joy to read; it shows an aspect of total war that is generally unappreciated.

              Book Description

Nassau William Senior (1790-1864) - economist, critical essayist and government adviser - was a highly original classical economist in the era between Ricardo's Principles of 1817 and Mill's Principles of 1848. He was the first Professor of Political Economy at Oxford, and in his published works he made original contributions to the theory of value, rent, population, money, and international trade. Senior was an active proponent of laissez-faire. Although Senior did not achieve the originality and influence of the leading economists of the classical school - Smith, Ricardo, and Malthus - he did make an enduring contribution on the development of economics. John Stuart Mill took much effort to respond to Senior.

This book includes writings such as: An Introductory Lecture on Political Economy [1827], Three Lectures on the Transmission of the Precious Metals [1828], Two Lectures on Population with a Correspondence Between the Author and T.R. Malthus [1829], Three Lectures on the Cost of Obtaining Money [1830], Two Letters on the Factory Acts [1837], Three Lectures on the Value of Money [1840] and Four Introductory Lectures on Political Economy [1852].

                Book Description

The book provides a fresh historical perspective on the internationalization of banking business and the emergence of the Euro-Dollar and Euro-Bond markets from the late 1950s to the early 1970s -- a process which laid the foundations of the subsequent financial globalization. Since the mid-1950s, multilateralism and rapidly growing trade among OECD countries, the gradual (though asymmetrical) relaxation of exchange controls, and the return to external convertibility had sowed the seeds of economic interdependence and financial integration. All these factors actively encouraged American and European banks to pursue the expansion of their international business, largely free of regulations and controls affecting their domestic activity. International banking of the 1960s was also the forge of a restless wave of financial innovations. In fact Euro-Dollars (along with other minor Euro-Currencies) and Euro-Bonds fostered the emergence of fast-growing international money and capital markets, mainly based in the City of London, which rapidly became the new frontier of growth for banking business. Aggressive behaviour of American banks in Europe, coupled with an efficient multinational structure and a remarkable degree of financial creativity, added a sharp competitive edge to Euro-banking. Following their multinational customers as much as escaping from cumbersome domestic regulation, US banks rapidly attained a dominant position in London, while establishing at the same time their footholds on the Continent. This volume is based primarily upon largely unexplored archive records and addreses original issues. The causes of the primacy of London as an international financial centre are investigated, as well as the impact of Euro-banking on British clearing banks as a boost towards liability management and business diversification. Some wider perspectives are also included, which focus on innovative strategies designed by European banks -- such as consortium banking and other cooperative ventures -- in response both to the American challenge and to the establishment of the European Community.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-10-20

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

                My favorite chapters were:

                1. Initial business concerns
                2. Your business' structure
                3. Business start-up details
                5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
                7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
                8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!
