Based on many years of painstaking research and covering eleven centuries of medieval, modern and contemporary history, The Alhambra represents a major contribution to world scholarship.

During his research for the book, the author has made some very exciting discoveries. He has, for example, resolved one of the great enigmas of Nasrid art by discovering the geometric proportional system on which the entire Alhambra architecture and decoration are based. The designs are at times so intricate that they baffle even professional mathematicians: Professor Fernández-Puertas has cracked the geometric code and discovered that the marvels of the Alhambra are built on a proportional system that is essentially incommensurable and not based on fixed units like metres or inches. This has involved making hundreds of analytical figures, many of which will be included in the book.

Professor Fernández-Puertas is also the first to discover the chronological order in which the Alhambra palaces were built. He has collated much fragmentary information in order to reconstruct a picture of court life within the Alhambra and the personalities of its sultans and poet-viziers. The book thus contains the heart of three centuries of Nasrid art, as well as providing a history of the palatine city from the ninth century to the present day: the pre-Nasrid Alhambra, the Nasrid Alhambra and the Christian Alhambra.

The best for your south florida adventures.......2006-04-25

I was looking for ideas for pages because we are going to do a family reunion at Disney. This is a once in a lifetime event and I wanted to scrap it for the little ones. I took out so many books from the library and pages through dozens of books at the craft store. Then I came accross this gem.

Practically every layout begs to be re-defined for our pages. The book starts out with beach pages and has a particullarly nice "Cousins are Friends" page that will work quite nice for our expented family. The outings section is 90% Disney layouts, including what to do with your Epcot travels and Animal Kingdom. It also has a few Sea World layouts for that side trip. In the outdoor section it has camping pages that work well if you are staying at Ft Wildreness. Also a great spelunking section, which I have never seen before.

While I checked this book out from the library, I now want to buy a copy for my collection as it is a wonderful layout resourse. As a beginner I did not find the very short and basic layout directions to be too difficult. The book names the manufacturer of the items used and probably assumes you will be consulting the various directions or just using your own creativity to alter the layouts.

A great addition to any scrapbooker's collection!
When I first saw this book I was just amazed that I had finally found a book dedicated to vacation scrapbook pages. And after opening it, I was thrilled that it didn't disappoint like so many other scrapbook idea books I've seen in the past. Anyone needing great examples for vacation layouts should definitely pick up this book. While the book doesn't provide much in written tips and ideas it does provide pages upon pages of beautifully designed layouts. These pages will have your creative juices flowing in no time. Happy scrapping!

Forgotten but not lost.......2006-04-02

This book as well as all of Mr Phoenix's works is a must read for all who remember better times and for those who forgot just what life in America was like before the negativity of todays culture.
It sings to the heart and gently nudges the brain of those who are old enough to have experienced an America that is,I'm sad to say, almost gone.If you are too young to remember then be careful.After reading this you may find yourself wishing to have been born earlier.Buying this book as well as all of Mr Phoenix's time-capsules of literature is a gift for the soul.

Funny and fascinating.......2002-12-23

This is the real deal. People's actual vacation photos of the America I wish was still out there to see on a road trip. The pix capture the genuine feel of the times without sentimentality or false nostalgia and Phoenix's commentary is a laugh-out-loud counterpart to the images. This is the best kind of affectionate satire. Hilarious, amazing stuff.

Hey that's not fair.......2002-12-05

Obviously at other reviewer never took a car-trip vacation with his or her parents. I am a fan of Phoenix's work (So California in the '50s is his best), but I think I'm objective when I say this book captures a slice of Americana that many people would like to forget and the rest of us want to enjoy. It's funny and it's poignant at the same time. Don't be dissuaded by that other review. This is a book with charm.

Not very snap happy?.......2002-08-26

Author Charles Phoenix, while in a thrift shop, came across a box of 35mm slides and he became hooked on collecting other peoples discarded transparencies. Unfortunately most of the 117 chosen for his book should have remained discarded. Loosely based on a trip around America, (mostly taken in the fifties) they can be divided into two types, the straightforward record of a tourist site with aunt Bessie (or whoever) posing and the personal photos of an individual or group. This second selection produces the weakest photos because you don't have a clue about why the scene was captured on film.

Amateur photos are precious and personal to those who took them but of marginal interest to anyone else and also these photos, for whatever reason, had been junked by someone. Making them large, one to a page, with the date and a few pithy words, surrounded by too much white space does not make a very interesting book. This really would have been fascinating, I think, if there had been lots more, made smaller and perhaps laid out in a collage format with some road maps, tourist trinkets and other printed ephemera on the page plus a much more funnier commentary. Columnist James Lileks did it with 'The Gallery of Regrettable Food', a collection of ordinary food photos from fifties consumer ads and recipe books plus his own wry way with words produced a very funny book.

Keynesian economics is not dead but is alive and kicking in the U.S. and elsewhere. However, Keynesian economics has caused the U.S. and other countries under its influence to suffer inflation, economic instability, excessive debt, overconsumption, and underinvestment on a serious scale. Meanwhile, many Far Eastern and European countries have rejected Keynesian-style economics and are rapidly surpassing the U.S. in economic growth. This edited volume is the first and only modern work to attack Keynesian economic theory, which is at the root of many of the U.S. economic problems. The contributors of this volume analyze the main tenets of Keynesianism--the multiplier and accelerator, the Phillips curve, the paradox of thrift, Keynesian development theory, progressive taxation, deficit spending and countercyclical demand policy, and post-Keynesianism. Keynes was not a Keynesian.......2007-06-19

This is a book of collected essays written by libertarian,anarchist economists like Murray Rothbard,Hans-Hoppe,Roger Garrison,Mark Skousen,and Gordon. These authors argue that Keynesianism can be traced directly back to Keynes's 1936 work,The General Theory.The basic argument is that Keynes was in favor of deficit financing,budget deficits,tax cuts,an activist fiscal policy,the Phillips curve analysis of a supposed policy capability of trading off % changes in money wages(later prices were substituted for wages) versus % changes in unemployment,incomes policies,etc.Contrary to these authors speculations,Keynes never supported any of the policies identified as Keynesian.It is true that Keynes supported progressive taxation as did Adam Smith.It is true that Keynes supported maintaining low,fixed rates of interest as did Adam Smith.It is true that Keynes supported a policy of skewing credit and commercial bank loan availability away from projectors,prodigals,and imprudent risk takers and toward sober individuals who would make productive use of the loans to increase the wealth of nations by increasing physical,durable capital investment and jobs instead of creating speculative bubbles that impose immense negative externality and spillover costs on the average citizen as did Adam Smith.It is true that Keynes supported retaliatory and revenue tariffs as did Adam Smith.The fundamental problem with these essays is that all of the writers would completely reject the wisdom of Adam Smith, a conservative who would have supported the Federalists(Hamilton,Washington,Madison,Franklin,the Adams Brothers,etc.)in their battles with the libertarian,anarchist Anti-Federalists(Mason,Randolph,Paine,Henry,Jefferson,etc.)

We can now summarize Keynes's major economic policy proposal-fix and maintain low rates of interest for productive borrowers permanently and prevent Wall Street speculators(Smith's projectors)from screwing up the economy.Nowhere in any of these essays is the actual policy proposals made by Keynes in chapters 22,23,and 24 of the GT ever considered.I recommend the book because it shows that these authors never read all of the GT.Keynes's policy proposals in chapters 22-24 are simply ignored.The writers of these essays also never read all of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations either.However,if they had taken the time to actually read what it was that Smith wrote,they would oppose Smith as virulently as they oppose Keynes because Smith,like Keynes, was well aware of the problems of market failure,externalities, and insufficient investment in public goods and infrastructure projects that beenfit society as a whole.Smith,like Keynes,understood only to well the dangers resulting from the speculative use of bank loans to support the creation of bubbles in financial markets.Smith realized that loans to speculators were "... savings that were wasted.." and did not contribute to productive wealth creation.This fundamental finding has been ignored for more than two centuries by economists in general and especially the economists in this book.

This is a must read for anyone who works at any organization in any job. Eileen's book has wonderful, real stories that will teach and inspire. The exercises and thought pieces provide the vital "how to's" as well.

I started this book with the idea of just perusing it. Boy was I wrong. I became addicted to its constructive informstion and its easy reading style. I even took it with me into the bathroom. Thank you, Eileen McDargh!
