    Book Description

As the rail barons who transformed Florida pushed their lines southward, they also created a string of resort hotels to attract wealthy northerners with an appetite for balmy climates and luxurious accommodations. Susan Braden tells the story of the magnificent pleasure palaces created by Plant and Flagler and the impact of their conspicuous scale and opulence on the Florida wilderness.

Braden traces the enterprises that brought Plant and Flagler to Florida and then examines each of their hotels, describing the architecture, how they physically functioned, and what they offered their guests in the way of recreation and leisure. From the Spanish Renaissance of St. Augustine's Ponce de Leon, to Georgian Revival in Palm Beach's Royal Poinciana, to the Islamic Revival of the Tampa Bay Hotel and the Alpine ambience of the nearby Belleview, her individual profiles of each hotel show how the builders mixed recognizable style with physical and functional independence, and then capped both with an aura of blatant luxury on a scale previously unknown in Florida. The hotels' creators, by catering to the newly realized needs and demands of their affluent patrons, brought civilization to the frontier and established the legacy of tropical fantasy and escape that endures in Florida to this day.

Braden's research draws upon architectural plans and archival resources, as well as memoirs and accounts written by Gilded Age visitors and employees, to re-create the experience of Florida's winter resorts. Floor plans and abundant illustrations--many never before published--make this book a richly visual documentation that will appeal to architectural historians, preservationists, and general readers curious about Florida's pioneering tradition of exotic escape and the resplendent structures in which it was born.

2 out of 5 stars Trying Too Hard.......2006-07-04

The first few chapters got me laughing, yes. But later on, I felt like I was reading a stand up comedian's script. It made me feel that everytime she goes on a vacation, she turns every moment as an oppurtunity to make it derogatorily funny. A bit too pessimistic for me.
i liked however how she pointed out the 'usual' members of a travel group and the confinement of travelling with a group.
sometimes the accounts are too exagerrated, bordering on slapstick: (when she decided to travel and not be a house-sitter anymore, she held up her hands to declare this, clutching the neighbor's hamster).
This is a book that may be enjoyed by people who travel so that they could be reminded of how things are all better 'back home'. People who genuinely love to travel (for love of culture and other purposes) may find it a waste of time reading this.

5 out of 5 stars The most humorous book I have ever read!.......2006-01-11

This is the first book I've read by Irma Bombeck and I bought it because of the rave reviews from other readers. I was more than pleasantly surprised. I am recovering from a broken ankle and needing a "little cheering up". This book did the trick. I was laughing nonstop. I would highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars LIfe turned comedy through the words of Bombeck.......2004-02-16

The title at first hadnt seemed so appealing to me, but the contents of the novel is what matters the most. My mother had urged me to read this book saying it was both witty and funny. A optimistic novel, turning lifes issues into comedy. In her book " When you Look like YouPassport Photo" she writes about her travel experiences which you can both laugh with and at the same time relate to. It starts off with her never having left her home town, to renting the smallest and most unpractical home RV in the world to deciding to leaving her children home to explore Europe. Even if you havent traveled you can laugh at the way she describes even the weirdest things and if you have relate to the tour guides and horrible food services. The memeroable husband always thinking that there are consipiracies going on in the system. The Hotel rationing the same piece of hard roll for every serving. Then there is always your typical bus groups. The health fanatic upfront, the photo mania and your typical drunk always singing at certain stops. I found it funny when she explaned that she had more children than she had window seats and just basically how she compared her life to things. IN her book, she gives tips and rules on travel issues. I havent read a book that made me laugh from page to page liek this one, this is a book no one should miss reading. Her perspective is always fresh, always giving her own ideas her own opinios. " Food for the dangerous" isnt this a catchy yet dangerous phrase. Erma describes all things with a different look. I heard that the authot died a few years ago and i praise her. Having suffering so much illness and even althrough this, having the ability to narate such an optimistic and hilarious book.

5 out of 5 stars True, so true!.......2003-04-15

Erma's funniest book yet! Every time I'm on a car trip and I'm stuck behind an RV, I think of her experience driving the "rig" with her hands clamped to the wheel, etc. I think of her regretting having more children than she had backseat windows and paying a fortune for a cruise only to spend half the voyage throwing up into a sink shaped like a seashell. Erma took mundane real life for mothers/wives and made it funny.

            5 out of 5 stars I've never read a Bombeck book I didn't like..............2002-04-20

& this was the best. You can litterally place yourself in her shoes & experience comical things you could never have imagined happening to yourself. The way she narrates really grabs you into the book & won't let you go, & when your finished you need another of her books or you'll go into withdrawl syndrome. It was a horrible loss she died & took her comical genius that no one else has mastered with her.

            Book Description

Passport Photos, a self-conscious act of artistic and intellectual forgery, is a report on the immigrant condition. A multigenre book combining theory, poetry, cultural criticism, and photography, it explores the complexities of the immigration experience, intervening in the impersonal language of the state. Passport Photos joins books by writers like Edward Said and Trinh T. Minh-ha in the search for a new poetics and politics of diaspora.
Organized as a passport, Passport Photos is a unique work, taking as its object of analysis and engagement the lived experience of post-coloniality--especially in the United States and India. The book is a collage, moving back and forth between places, historical moments, voices, and levels of analysis. Seeking to link cultural, political, and aesthetic critiques, it weaves together issues as diverse as Indian fiction written in English, signs put up by the border patrol at the U.S.-Tijuana border, ethnic restaurants in New York City, the history of Indian indenture in Trinidad, Native Americans at the Superbowl, and much more.
The borders this book crosses again and again are those where critical theory meets popular journalism, and where political poetry encounters the work of documentary photography. The argument for such border crossings lies in the reality of people's lives. This thought-provoking book explores that reality, as it brings postcolonial theory to a personal level and investigates global influences on local lives of immigrants.

            5 out of 5 stars Rare insight.......2003-10-28

Passport Photos is a beautiful book. Kumar uses photos, poetry and essays to give a rare insight into post-colonialism and immigration. Kumar's writing is helping to make the American people less ignorant to issues concerning immigration, cultural imperialism and patriotism.

            1 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointing.......2002-10-29

Like author, I also have a similar background, and thought this book would make an interesting read. I was terribly disappointed. This book is the most vague book I have ever read.
The author has done extremely poor job. With his communist leanings, he should be thrown out of the west, the west that he tries to pander relentlessly in this "book".
            Save your money!!

            5 out of 5 stars Good performance.......2002-04-20

I am a South Asian journalist living in New Jersey. Very little has been said about Amitava Kumar's photographs. They present different facets of our world. What is striking is that he frames the photographs, and one could argue, our world, in new and critical ways.
The South Asian Journalists Association organized a reading by Kumar at the Brecht Forum. I enjoyed the reading immensely, and when I read the book, I saw that book was also a performance -- which brought together the world of academia, art, and journalism.

1 out of 5 stars Pandering to White Expectations of the Immigrant Experience.......2002-04-07

I have to agree with "a reader from new york" (August 7). This book is an example of complicity on the part of a minority academic in neo-orientalist constructions.

2 out of 5 stars Precious and Self-Obsessed.......2002-03-07

Perhaps the most fascinating thing about this book is the perfection with which it achieves the standard contemporary literary tone of precious artiness, adding to that a self-referential style that never allows the reader out of the jealous and controlling grasp of the author even for a nano-second, and the sort of facile political posturing that has made universties such unbearable places to be these days. I actually burst into laughter any number of times when the dead-serious author said something so utterly and humorlessly awful that I could not believe he had the audacity to print it. Well, such is academic life these days. Best to avoid this book unless you like the sort of kitschy, naive-arty posturing on display, or if you are interested in what I think of as faculty meeting nouveau in art.

3 out of 5 stars Not a usable manual, but worth a quick read.......2006-05-09

The previous reviews haven't exaggerated the faults of this book. No self respecting photographer would allow their work to be halftoned so coarsely as the photo illustrations in this book are. But they do their job well enough, and the line drawings are effective.

The overall tone of the book is relaxed and casual; the author goes to length to reassure unskilled woodworkers as the project progresses. It's too bad the book's editors (if there in fact were any) took that approach to publishing it, but the book does provide clever ideas and some confidence in building a view camera. More than a decade later, there are abundant resources on the web to give a more complete plan for a homemade camera.

Because this book leaves critical steps obscured or omitted altogether (like how to attach the bellows to the standards), it won't suffice as a complete manual. But it's a good place to start, because unlike most current web resources it communicates that it's really quite easy.

2 out of 5 stars Are those black blobs supposed to be pictures?.......2002-08-03

Pros: This book does show you how to build a functional view camera with inexpensive materials.
Cons: The pictures (or the black blobs that pass for them) are the worst I've ever seen on any kind of published material. They look like Rorschach inkblot tests.

1 out of 5 stars An environmental waste of paper.......2001-08-23

I read the other reviews and thought it couldn't be that bad, but it is. A reasonably clever person with some engineering background could and should design a more functional and attractive view camera than that shown. For that reason the waste of time was worse than the waste of money.

                            Book Description

While much has been written about tourism-related development in tropical islands from a socio-cultural and economic point of view, the political ecology of environmental change has received surprisingly little attention. Political ecology is a powerful tool with which to investigate the role and interests of different actors in the process of environmental change, and this highly original volume represents a first ever study of tourism and tropical island development employing this novel but effective approach. Central to the argument is the belief that environmental problems cannot properly be understood without considering their economic and political context. The political ecology focus allows the authors to compare a wide range of tropical islands and to identify more sustainable development paths. They are also able to analyze the role of the various actors involved in the tourism development versus environmental change debate such as the state, international organizations, the tourism industry, local communities and non-governmental organizations.

                                Book Description

While maintaining the risk measurement and management framework that Tony Saunders' market leading MBA text in Financial Institutions is noted for, Fundamentals of Financial Institutions Management provides a broader application of this important perspective. This book recognizes that various financial service firms are evolving towards a single industry. Therefore, examining important decisions for all types of FIs is a significant focus of the coverage and examples within this book. This book relates ways in which managers of modern FIs can expand return with a managed level of risk to achieve the best, or most favorable, return-risk outcome for FI owners.

3 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Financial Institutions Management.......2000-04-27

I found the book to be a much easier read than many other Finance Texts I have encountered in the past. The accompanying questions were useful, although not always clearly applicable to the material presented in the text.
