Book Description
Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States, felt that the founding and design of the University of Virginia in 1819 was his most lasting achievement. Jefferson's Academical Village centers on the Rotunda, the Lawn, and ten neoclassical Pavilions. Today, spanning 1,065 acres and the 80 buildings described in this guide, the campus features major architectural works by McKim, Mead & White, Michael Graves, Robert A. M. Stern, Hugh Stubbins, Hartman-Cox, and Tod Williams and Billie Tsien. Award-winning historian Richard Guy Wilson and Sara A. Butler take the reader on an enjoyable tour of the University's heritage and recent works, from Jefferson's highly ordered nineteenth-century village to the suburban postmodern campus of the late twentieth century.
This beautifully photographed guide reveals the stories behind over 80 buildings, historic gardens, art galleries, theaters, and works of sculpture on the University of Virginia campus.
Exquisitely painted three-dimensional maps locate featured buildings on the campus and six sub-districts-The Lawn, Central Grounds, West Grounds, Health Sciences Center, Rugby Road and Carr's Hill, North Grounds, and Observatory Hill.
Finally, archival photographs and drawings recapture fragments of "lost" buildings and recall notable historic moments.
Customer Reviews:
The only campus guide you will need.......2001-09-03
This book is superior in every way. Intended to explore the university grounds from a primarily architectural perspective, the author's writing is both impassioned and objective in its analysis of the unique architectural qualities of this wonderful university. Yet despite a clear cut architectural purpose, this book also manages to provide the best single, practical guide to the university grounds available. The author organizes his well written descriptions around a series of walks, and provides in-depth information, photographs, and history for each building or site encountered. The result is the ultimate guide for newcomers exploring the university grounds for the first time, as well as for those who already know them intimately.
Beautiful...............2000-07-06
Students, parents, historians, architects, professors...this book is for you! This comprehensive tour guide is just what you need to stroll the grounds and surrounding area of UVA. The writing is superior; the beautiful photographs distinguish this from any other tour book of the university! Buy this for the new student OR the graduate!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource that is a must for non-insurance people!.......1998-12-04
Kunreuther, et al have made a major leap forward in helping to educate and inform insurance and non-insurance people alike on the threats associated with natural hazards of all kinds, how insurance companies historically and are now reacting to how those hazards affect their business as they seek to help their insureds manage the risks they face, to demystify the complex world of insurance, and to offer some well reasoned suggestions for all who have a stake in managing the risk of damage from catastrophic natural hazards like hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, etc. Whether the reader is: an individual homeowner; a member of the scientific or academic community; an interested federal, state or community official; an insurance or reinsurance company employee; or one of the other parties who should be concerned about how catastrophes might impact their customers and constituents, this book is a must! Read it to understand the extent of the problem. Read it to understand how mitigation of future damage may be a key part of the solution for the risk that the individual homeowner whose home is located in harm's way (nature's fury) faces. Read it to understand what's been tried and what's suceeded or failed. But mostly read it to seriously consider how you can participate in the solution. The responsibility rests with the individual homeowner to make sure that his or her home is as safe and strong as it should be - for the sake of his or her loved ones (including the family pets), his or her irreplaceable or prized possessions, and that their psychological well-being and lifestyle are not significantly disturbed after a major catastrophic event. And he or she must see themselves as part of a safe and strong community that can similarly weather what Mother Nature can (and at some time certainly will, regardless of how small the probability) throw at them so that the goods and services it provides can be continued after such an event. This book provides a balanced approach to helping the reader understand the role insurance can, should, and does play. But it also helps place it into perspective and suggests some next steps. It explores the reasons for why the different stakeholders act the way they do. Why do people not react to the risk they face by demanding and then paying to make their homes stronger and safer? Why do insurance companies not offer premium incentives? How do various public policies and practices get in the way of efforts to invest significant tax dollars to promote stronger, safer homes and communities, when the original objective of that investment was to avoid spending significantly more tax dollars every year to bail out people and communities living in areas at risk to hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, and other natural hazards (sometimes repeatedly) because they either didn't fully understand the risk or they simply chose not to act to avoid or reduce the subsequent damage? Read this book to learn. Read this book to capture a vision of what needs doing. Seek more information from the Federal Emergency Management Agency or from the Institute for Business and Home Safety on how to retrofit your own home or how to contribute to community based programs. Both have very good web sites that are mentioned in the book. And finally carefully evaluate your own risk to natural hazards and take action to protect your family (both physically and psychologically), your irreplaceable and prized possessions, and get involved with others in your community to do the same thing for the environment in which you live, work, and recreate. Thanks to Kunreuther, et al for giving us such a wonderful resource to get us thinking about the status and role of insurance against the adverse impacts of natural disasters in the United States, but also for helping awaken us to our own status and role in protecting our families, our homes, and our communities because it should now be clear that insurance is only part of the solution. Keeping it affordable and available requires us to begin seeing insurance as just one, albeit very important, part of our arsenal for managing our individual and corporate risk of loss from natural hazards that threaten us where we live. Respectfully submitted, Dennis Fasking

Customer Reviews:
Mostly a rehash of fairly obvious ideas.......2007-07-06
This book is a collection of general advice from 10 professionals in banking and venture capital. It's short (which I found to be both a pro and a con) - about 90 pages long (in huge font with large spacing) - and takes 1-2 hours to read.
The advice in this book concentrates on personal qualities and work ethics that will help a beginning banker become successful in his/her career. It does not cover what a job at an i-bank or a private equity firm would actually entail (i.e. job responsibilities, corporate structure, hours, pay, etc.). For that information, check out the Vault Career Guide for Investment Banking - it is very comprehensive, despite its poor rating and reviews here on Amazon.
I found most of the advice given in this book very repetitive and, in most cases, rather obvious. Most of the professionals stress that you need to have good "people skills", understand issues from the client's perspective, and build a long-term relationship with the client based on mutual understanding and trust. Most of the other advice given in the book stems from these three basic facts. Sure, it is useful to know this - but I think that most readers of this book already do.
A significant area covered by the book is a very high-level discussion on various methods of valuation - what you should keep in mind right now, how to project future value, etc. I found this pretty interesting, but too high-level - not really exploring any details. Only the last chapter (from Alex Wilmerding of Boston Capital Ventures) features some actual numbers - but, again, with very little detail and no explanation of how many of the numbers are derived.
I was hoping to see more information that would be helpful in preparing for an interview at one of the large firms presented in the book. However, I found almost nothing of that sort. A couple brief pieces of advice are scattered throughout the book. Here's one from Eduardo G. Mestre of Salomon Smith Barney (and later repeated by Patrick Ennis of ARCH Venture Partners) that has some use: "A stint at a real job in some nice, big industrial enterprise would also probably be helpful, especially if you intend to become a so-called industry specialist. Believe it or not, it actually helps to have at least a notional understanding of the business you are trying to finance, buy, sell, or restructure" (49-50).
In conclusion, the book provides very basic advice that you, as the reader, will most likely already know - either from common sense or from other extremely basic knowledge of the banking/finance world. However, the book is very short and might be worth reading just for the few useful pieces of advice scattered throughout. Plus, perhaps you can quote these guys to impress your interviewers.
Pros:
+ short, quick read
+ a few useful tidbits of advice scattered throughout
Cons:
- short, simply not enough discussion of details
- a lot of repetition
- most of the advice is very basic - stuff you probably already know
Very good book...do not miss........2003-01-25
I would highly recommend this book to anyone going into, or thinking of going into investment banking. I am now an investment banker at Goldman Sachs, and this book was really helpful to me landing the job (and getting integrated)
The excerpts from leading investment bankers is extremely useful and really helps for interviewing or just getting integrated into a new investment bank. Especially useful was the chapter written by the head of investment banking from Merrilly Lynch.
The book is short and very easy to read. I highligh recommend it for anyone interested in investment banking.

Customer Reviews:
Divorced Woman: Author of Congratulations on Your Divorce: The Road to Finding Your Happily Ever After.......2007-09-18
This book is a great resource for women, especially if they are faced with the challenge of getting back into the work force. Many women entering the world of divorce have to face the reality that they now need to support themselves and maybe thier children on their own. They are filled with uncertainty and anxiety. This book offers strategies to be effective at work that are easy to digest and entertaining yet delivers real life solutions to challenges women face. Reading the book makes you feel like you are talking to girlfriends who are telling you the way of the work world; the good-bad and ugly. I loved it and learned a lot from these women, I will continue to reccomend this book.
Get a leg up without having to step on people .......2007-04-23
Such a great book! Somewhat frivolous wording at times, but the core is gold. If you really want to improve yourself as a working person, there's guidance here that will help.
I wish this book was around when I began my first job. This sage, practical advice is applicable and can be put in practice right away. I've been working full time for more than six years and it's not like I was totally clueless or ineffective, but after each of these chapters I felt even more capable. This is not a collection of statistics, platitudes, or power-tripping that gets you all fired up with directionless and ultimately wasted energy - this is a plan of action.
This isn't just for office girls - anyone who works with others in any capacity may enjoy it. I appreciate the constant positive themes in the book - there's encouragement to value and respect your fellow workers here, as well as yourself.
Sure, this book suggests that you trust no one other than yourself, but without skullduggery. I ran afoul of too many Here's How to Get Ahead books that were, in a word, vicious. It's exhausting and counter-productive to be on constant keyed-up watch and expectation against the attacks that will come, or launch repeated preemptive strikes. What I need is advice on how work well with others, to be productive, to get ahead and still (and foremost) respect myself, to enjoy my job, and that's what I get here.
This book is from the hearts and minds of two people who have been there, or somewhere like it, to people who will be there, or are there, and don't mind a helping hand.
Fab for a young career girl.......2006-12-30
I actually received this book as a college graduation gift, and I really enjoyed reading it. It gives a very practical approach to getting along in the working world, and I especially enjoyed the many examples of how "not" to get ahead. In an age when young women come into the workforce with goals and ambitions, this was a book directed at an eager audience. I'd certainly recommend it!
Okay but I agree with the other reviewer.......2006-07-05
It was basically a sugar coated version of "Power".
I wish everyone luck in their new endeavors. What these women say are unfortunately true. What you learn all through school and life is that if you work hard, you get credit. In the real world - it's nothing like that.
You're better off reading "The 48 Laws of Power". It's the truth. NON-sugar-coated but it's blunt and truthful. Hold on weak stomached people.. it's a learning curve no one ever told you about but one that if you should learn early on... will help you in the future for years and years to come.
How To Use People & Kiss Execs A**es.......2006-07-05
I bought the book, and am totally disappointed in it. The title of my review tells you everything.. That's all it is about.
I'm a veteran of the office world and can tell you that most people who do these things are hated in the real world. They are totally transparent and their manipulative clawing ways to the top fool NO ONE!
These women act like experts, but I could bet you five billion dollars that they would die if they knew what people who work for them, REALLY thought of them. They are NOTHING more than the typical kiss a** C-you-en-tee z's, that works their way up the corporate ladder by stabbing others in the back while gaining allies behind the scenes. Quite a SUGAR-COATED shrewd book to get more women to act like manipulative little witches.
In the real world, these women are the ones sticking their noses up at you. Bragging that you are nothing but a peon they get to, how did they (first hand) say that in their book?.... "...one of the forty employees she gets to boss around..."
They are nothing but bit**es-on-a-female-nepoleon-power-trip.
But you know what? I'm going to read it so that I memorize every manipulative step they do...to stay one step ahead of your pathetic games and have protection against the self-serving greed hungry witches.
No wonder women get a bad rap in the office!!!
*****This book is proof you ALL deserve the horrible labels you get.*****
