Projects were a little too strange........2005-07-11

I think Ms. Skinner has a lot of talent but I was disappointed in the projects. I wanted some advice to use on different areas of my house but the projects in the book were really unique and not applicable, I believe, to most people. It was not a book I would order again.

Not usually a fan of metallic colors.......2002-12-16

If I wanted to paint something metallic, this would be the book I would go to for instructions . If I hadn't just bought a bunch of other interior decoration books, I would have bought this one. The projects were very creative and inspiring and surprisingly untacky. This book would be a fun addition to any design junkies library.

Pluses:
It has a wide variety of projects, easy to understand technical info, instructions and tools listed in great detail.

Bonus:
Several pages of color swatches for every type of paint effect and metallic color imaginable.

Minus:
If you were expecting 70's metallic wallpaper, don't buy this book.

Each project is profusely illustrated with clear step-by-step instructions and enhanced with the color photography by Tim France. The Gilded Room is a very highly recommended addition to any personal or professional interior design reference collection.

Awesome metal effects and wonderful projects.......2001-03-18

Though I have numerous books about decorative finishes, this is the only one that focuses on metal effects. It is packed with fresh ideas and techniques not seen elsewhere. While many other books focus on cute floral or antique looking interiors, there are many projects here with a clean, modern, metallic look, along with classical styles as well.

There are over 15 projects including a faux-gold wall, aluminum wall paneling, metallic-effect patterned floor tiles, mesh lampshade with metal accents, Moroccan-style shutters, a steel-effect column and an incised gesso plaque. Each project includes a materials list, and step-by-step instructions accompanied by photos. A discussion of the project and large photo of the finished design is included as well.

Technical information is included in the back. There is a photograph of just about every tool and material you will use. The author also guides you seamlessly through preparing size and gesso. The details of water-gilding, gilding with oil and acrylic size, finishes, metal patination, and painted metallic effects are also shown. There is also an awesome section spanning nine pages that shows swatches of over 70 special effects including painted patinas, metal-leaf patinas, and patterned metallics.

If you love the look of metal then you need to buy this book. With so much information and so many inspirational ideas you won't be disappointed.

Metallic finishes don't have to look like cheap tin foil. This book shows you how to decorate with a variety of metallic shades, from burnished golds to delicate silvers and everything in between. The most comprehensive book on this subject that I've ever seen.

A Nice Pictorial History of the War........2005-04-02

Mathew Brady was called Lincoln's Camera Man, but this photo album is filled with photos from a battery of photographers. It is a nice history in pictures of that time, whoever took them.

These pictures show the devastation of the War. For some reason, though, more of them show dead Confederates. It depicts the war clearly showing some of the multitude killed at Antietam, Gettysburg, the ruins at Harper's Ferry (all places I took my sons to explore a while back). Lincoln is shown at Antietam after the 'bloodiest battle of the Civil War' in October, 1862. Gettysburg, where too many from the South died, occurred in July, 1863.

The pontoon bridges were unusual and clever. The horse and carriages and wagon trains showed how drastically things have changed. Seeing a real ironclad was interesting.

This is a short course in the Civil War for those who want to know what happened; they can see the aspects from a Northerner point of view, as they ravished the South and left parts of it looking like bombed out London or Germany.

A 'Must Have' book for every Civil War library.......2004-05-14

What an valuable tome, Surley one of the most impressive collections of Civil War images ever collected. The introductions to the twenty-one sections are very helpful for appreciating the 400+ haunting Brady photos. I especially enjoyed the Federal Navy section, with photos I had never seen before, although I've read and edited several publications about the Civil War. Included also is a very practical guide to acquiring copies of the photos. In has been ten years since the prolific George Sullivan presented his biography of Mathew Brady. It was worth the wait as we have here an award-winning work that should be in teh history section of every private and public library. Not one of the 450 pages is disappointing.

Excellent addition to the genre.......2006-01-26

Although collections of Matthew Brady's work abound, most are targeted at adults or armchair war historians. The American War Between the States was the FIRST war that civilians could "follow from home" and the first to be photographed. This book brings the war out of dry history books and into harsh reality for young readers. Nice addition to a buff's library as well.

Richard Deeg argues that, despite financial market integration and considerable harmonization in the regulation of financial markets, the traditional structure and economic functions of national financial systems are not inevitably undermined. Using the case of Germany--a country with a strong and distinctive financial sector that is at the center of the pressures of economic integration--the author shows how the unique aspects of the German financial sector and its relationship to the German economy have persisted notwithstanding powerful pressures to change. Posing the German model of coordinated capitalism in which banks play an important role in shaping both firm behavior and the possibilities for state intervention in the economy against the liberal model of the United States and Britain in which the securities markets play a much greater role than banks, Deeg shows how the German model has survived competitive pressures in the international economic system that have pushed Germany--and other countries--toward the liberal model.

Good Ideas within a "Poor Mentality" Base.......2007-05-12

This book is full of interesting material, on how to develop the practice, the ethics... However I was a little disappointed by the "poor mentality" expressed by the authors; they often relate to the lack of money and how they're always trying to get the cheapest and avoid expenses. I agree that it's important to look carefully over money matters, and that money is much more easily spent than it is owned, but I believe we can be very successful with an abundance mentality. Nevertheless, this is a book I recommend, filtering through the information that make most sense for each reader.

Very good book for learning how to have a cash practice.......2004-04-10

Being just out of chiropractic school and working currently as an associate, I was not looking forward to dealing with insurance companies for payment when starting my own practice. However, this book was an eye-opener. Cash practice is the way to go because it decreases your expenses in the time it takes to collect from insurance companies. When you deal with insurance companies, you will be waiting hours on the phone at times or paying someone to do so. Also, I liked the ideas this book gave me in how to be successful in having a cash practice. I also would tell chiropractors or student that have not passed the part 4 boards to get:
National Board of Chiropractic Part IV Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (vol 1 and vol 2) by Leonardi. The study guides helped me pass and geared me towards the correct format of the test. Abblett's book is the way to go for success in a cash practice and Leonardi's study guides are the way to go for board exam preparation.

A MUST READ for every chiropractor.......2003-05-04

Terry and David Abblett have a thriving Cash practice in the Concord, CA area. With most of their practice pre-paying for their chiropractic care A/R's are a thing of the past. The patients are happy to be able to walk in get adjusted and walk out without worrying about bringing money each time.
The book also provides valuable practical information they have learned over the years. There is a large form section in the back with an explanation of how they use each one.
Yes, it is a quick read, but that just means you can read it again and again. After watching his office during the busy part of the day he has proven that having a cash practice is no problem and very profitable. I plan on utilizing everything this book says in my practice. Enjoy & believe it!!

He Practices What He Preaches!.......2001-04-11

After reading Dr. Abblett's book, I decided to visit his office to see if his book was fact or fiction. Was he just an author writing about the perfect practice or was he living it? Many skeptics in the field of chiropractic say that it is difficult or impossible to survive in a cash practice. They say that people will not come into your office if they have to pay more than a $5 dollar copay. Dr. Abblett proves all the naysayers wrong by having a thriving cash practice that is continuing to grow. While visiting his office, I could tell that he was genuinely happy that I was there and was very open about his business practices. The book gave me the attitude that a cash practice is a realistic goal that is very attainable. Please read his book and see for yourself.

Good start for the new Chiropractor.......2001-02-04

Being a New Chiropractor, looking to bypass the downward fall of the managed care system, I was pleased with the information obtained from this reader friendly guide. It gave me a starting point in which to research further into all aspects of beginning a cash practice from scratch. The authors are even available for further assistance and have directed me to cash practices in my area to contact. They've been of great help. I recommend this book to all new Chiropractors looking to venture into private practice.
