Book Description

Industry experts have long considered The Official Vintage Guitar Price Guide to be the most accurate, authoritative and detailed publication to tackle the seemingly indomitable task of placing values on thousands of vintage and recent-model guitars, amps, basses, effects pedals, mandolins, lapsteels and other fretted instruments. Now in its 12th edition, the new Guide offers more than ever. Authors Alan Greenwood and Gil Hembree have made their ultimate guide to values even more valuable, with more details on familiar favorites and background on nearly 130 brands never before included in any price guide. Plus, we've added 45 more pages and 100 more photos (nearly 700 in all!) showing all forms of vintage instruments, amps and effects. The Guide combines the most thorough research with an exceptionally user-friendly format that employs quick-find page headings, a comprehensive index, and a dealer directory that puts you just an e-mail or phone call away from guitar sellers in every region of the country. Also included is an in-depth look at the factors that drive the collectible instrument market, explaining the "hows and whys" in regard to the values of vintage and used equipment.

1 out of 5 stars And these guys are the experts? .......2007-06-02

Simply put, page after page have inaccuracies and incomplete information. If a novice like myself can find the errors it makes you wonder who in the heck the "experts" are. Do they proof read this before it goes to print? I am talking EASY things that most guitar players know.

It is just disappointing that a book that has an impact on market pricing is so inaccurate.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference.......2007-05-07

This price guide is a good reference book for anyone interested in buying, selling, collecting or edjucating themselves on used and vintage guitars, basses, and amplifiers.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful and complete guide ........2007-04-03

Excellent guide !! . It's the most complete guide I'd ever seen..
A good source for collectrors and not collectors too. Good Descriptions and details.. And very very complete..
You will find every intstrument you are looking for.

4 out of 5 stars One of many useful tools.......2007-03-11

One can rarely perform any complex and important task, be it manual or cerebral, with a single tool. Research on any subject is a prime example; a single reference source is never adequate. This guide, while not as complete or exhaustive as some might like, is simply one of many reference tools, and an extremely useful one. Were the guitar market static, it might make sense to put together a voluminous compilation aspiring to be all-inclusive and unerringly accurate. But the guitar market is anything but static and this guide simply provides the best "snapshot" that it can at this particular time.

I must disagree with those other reviewers who say the prices in this guide are so vastly off the mark, and that ebay represents the new paradigm in pricing information. My own experience during the last few years has been repeated instances of wishful sellers justifying their asking prices by pointing to the "Buy It Now" prices of the burgeoning numbers of "Power Sellers" and "ebay Store" entities. Those prices obviously have no significance in defining the current market, because the vast majority of the listings expire without generating a single bid. Even more interesting are the numerous cases in which sellers have said that their guitars sold, at or above the asking prices, and then a month or two later the same sellers have the same guitars listed again. Were it to happen often enough, such fraudulent generation of apparent sales could help drive the market upward, just as those sellers are obviously hoping.

While ebay sales represent valuable pricing data, the authors of this guide have certainly tried to exclude sales to apparently collusive buyers, and probably weighted their analysis in favor of those sales that generated numerous bids.

5 out of 5 stars A must for music collectors and guitar players alike........2007-03-06

This music collector's reference represents the only volume covering all the collectible guitars of the industry, and sets industry standards when it comes to determining market values of collectible guitars. Both musicians and collectors will want to keep this guide at hand: it blends quick-find page headings and an index and dealer directory for the entire country with an examination of what makes a guitar collectible. Add black and white photos and paragraphs of maker and model history and you have a price guide which can't be beat: a must for music collectors and guitar players alike.

4 out of 5 stars helpful but not a lot of new information.......1999-12-08

I found that this book provided me with more useful information than the manual that came with the camera. It defines the different modes in more detail and gives more examples about when you would use a feature.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, lots of Information.......1999-03-28

This would be a good book for most people. Might be a little technical for the absolute beginner, but I would recommend it to them anyway.

    Book Description

Ecosystems are the productive engines of the planet, providing us with everything from the water we drink to the food we eat and the fiber we use for clothing, paper, and lumber. Yet nearly every measure used to assess the health of ecosystems indicates that we are drawing on them more than ever, while degrading them at an accelerating rate.

How then can we best manage our vital ecosystems-and reduce our own impacts-so that they remain healthy and productive in the face of increasing human demands? Governments and businesses will first have to rethink some basic assumptions about how we measure and plan economic growth, taking into account the natural limits that sustain our ecosystems. This volume brings together the critical information about the condition and long-term prospects of our ecosystems that will be needed to make responsible decisions about their future.

Focusing on five critical systems (croplands, forests, coastal zones, freshwater systems, and grasslands) the book analyzes the value of goods and services currently provided by our ecosystems and their capacity to continue production. It goes on to recommend sweeping changes for managing these biological underpinnings of the global economy and human well-being, including: respecting the natural boundaries of ecosystems and managing them as one complete system, rather that as separate entities; regularly assessing the condition of our ecosystems and studying the processes that underlie their capacity to sustain life; assembling information that allows a careful weighing of tradeoffs between ecosystem goods and services and environmental, political, social, and economic goals; and including the public-particularly local communities-in the management of ecosystems.

5 out of 5 stars Information and Data Supporting Environmental Issues.......2002-11-01

This is the Millennium Edition (9th) in a series, which is a biennial (every-other year), comprehensive review of the critical issues and challenges facing the world's environmental leaders. The work is compiled by the researchers and staff of the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Environment Programme, the World Bank, and the World Resources Institute. World Resources provides surveys of current conditions and historical trends in major areas of concern and resource areas. The 2000-2001 edition of World Resources addresses the issues and concerns confronting the Earth's ecosytems. Individual chapters address the study of specific ecosystem types (e.g., agricultural coastal, forest, freshwater, grasslands)and analyzes the problems inherent in each. These analyses are described in the context of the ecosystem approach from identification of concerns to their resolution. Supporting trends data are provided for a variety of critical issues: Biodiversity and Protected Areas; Forests and Grasslands; Coastal, Marine, and Inland Waters; Agriculture and Food; Freshwater; Atmosphere and Climate; Energy and Resource Use; Population and Human Development; Basic Economic Indicators; and Small Nations and Islands. This work is an essential resource for understanding the scientific and technical basis of the major environmental and natural resources issues with which we deal at local, regional, national, and global levels. Sections are clearly written for an understanding by non-scientists and scholars reading this outside of their discipline of expertise. Extensive footnotes, maps, charts, and data tables are provided. Data also available in CD-ROM formats. This is an essential environmental reference work. Because of its thoroughness, ease of use, comprehensive coverage, and cost, this book should be on the shelf of ALL acacdemic, public, school (grade 6 and above), government agency, corporate, and other special libraries. Researchers (engineering, life, physical, policy, and social sciences), decision makers, educators, and students will find this a truly impressive ready-reference source for their own bookshelves as well.

        Book Description

World Resources 2000-2001, People and Ecosystems: The Fraying Web of Life focuses on the critical link between ecosystems and people and provides an overview of current global environmental and economic trends using hundreds of indicators in more than 150 countries.

Until now there has not been a comprehensive, formalised process to assess human damage to our ecosystems, to establish a baseline for future actions, or to disseminate information that would aid the formulation of better policies world-wide. This book is the first reliable, comprehensive base of evidence for taking stock and taking care of the world's diverse ecosystems.

        • deals with the critical issues that focus on the link between ecosystems and people

        • highlights the goods and services that ecosystems provide and illustrates the benefits of a better understanding and better management of the planet's natural wealth

        • reports on pilot studies by leading scientists and international institutions assessing the state of the world's ecosystems - forests, croplands, grasslands, freshwater systems and coastal areas

        • increases the understanding of human dependence on nature

        • raises awareness of environmental threats

        • provides examples of wise stewardship from all corners of the globe

        • focuses on four main issues: population and human well-being, food and water security, consumption, energy and wastes, trace emissions since the Kyoto protocol

        • gives data tables for more than 150 countries

It demonstrates the power of information and new digital technologies to transform the way we interact with our environment and is particularly important for environmentalists, scientists, professionals, journalists, policy-makers and students.

                Book Description

Markets are the most efficient means yet discovered of allocating society’s scarce resources. Unfortunately, many believe that market forces must inevitably conflict with social goals. So it is important to remind ourselves that market forces and self-interest can fulfil social, as well as private, aspirations. This book introduces a radical new financial instrument, Conflict Reduction Bonds, intended to channel the market’s incentives and efficiencies into achieving what is perhaps our most urgent and yet remote social objective: the ending for all time of violent political conflict.

Allison Hemming, who heads an interim workforce agency, discusses strategies you can use to get employed. She focuses primarily on entry level jobs and directs her advice to younger workers, especially those affected by the tight job market (hence the sassy, but unnecessarily tacky, sub-title). However, the basics of her technique can be applied by most job seekers. Hemming writes with an authoritative air, using a casual style to appeal to younger, hip workers, although her job hunting principles sound fairly basic. Note the book's tips on techniques to avoid and alternate techniques to pursue. She suggests niche searches on the Internet, targeted resumes and extensive networking. It's not very flashy but, nowadays, as job hunting increasingly becomes an extreme competitive sport, We recommend taking all the solid advice you can get.

3 out of 5 stars For the Recent Grad Not Experienced.......2003-12-12

Good intro, but no new nuggets. Enough to get me motivated again, but the advice is stale especially for a 2003 book. This book was written for the unsophisticated or the new grad. Advice like wear a suit to the interview and send thank you letters are so old hat. I was looking for concrete examples and got none. One suggestion was to include a powerful subject line in e-mails, but she included no examples. It's easy to give advice, but back it up with suggestions. That's what I was looking for. I'm very glad I bought the e-book as it was cheaper!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource and a good read.......2003-08-26

Work It, takes you from the beginnings of the job search, all the way through to the final interview. Each stage is clearly examined and Allison provides not only her own expertise and advice, but includes many quotes and opinions from others, including hiring managers and recruiters in the staffing industry.

Allison writes in a straight forward, encouraging, and appealing down-to-Earth style which translates very well to the reader. The book is very well organized and includes a short summary section at the end of each chapter to highlight the main points.

If you are looking for a book filled with charts and statistics, then Work It is not for you.

BUT....if you are in need of one of the BEST resources for real life advice and examples, combined with respected professional opinions on exactly what you need to do to get your dream job...then Work It is really the only book that you need.

4 out of 5 stars Good Advice for Finding Work and Getting Jobs.......2003-07-21

... Allison Hemming has written a very good book packed with practical advice for finding work and getting jobs. She's an expert at dealing with the grown-up world of work. One problem I have with this book is that it appears to be very heavily slanted to getting a certain kind of work - "corporate identity" types of jobs in particular - without really dealing with the great, big, whole world of work available out there. "Office Job" hunters will love this book. The problem is that not everyone is cut-out for an office job. The other problem I have with this book is that the print is very small - and even smaller in the highlighted boxes with the gray background. It is very difficult to read at times. Nevertheless, reading this book will help anyone in their job search, if only because of all of the helpful web sites mentioned.

... For those cautious souls uncertain about making a change or taking a leap, the advice given on pages 275 to 279 is encouraging: "The only thing scarier than living with your parents is relocating to a city where you don't know a soul. But if your heart is set on an industry that tends to be centered in one or two specific cities (like Washington, D.C. for the federal government, New York or Los Angeles for entertainment, or the San Francisco Bay Area for technology), you could be looking at pulling up stakes. So how exactly do you conduct a long-distance job search while you're still at college or stuck in your hometown living with your parents? Do you move to the city right off the bat, or do you wait until you land a job and then go? Quite simply, it depends. The biggest consideration is that four-letter word: c-a-s-h. ... To Move or Not to Move. That's the million-dollar question. If you can swing it financially and you're sure of where you want to go, it probably makes sense to just do it, even if there's no job waiting for you in your new city. Interviewers will feel more confident that you're for real if you have a local address than if you're just in town to check things out. Besides, having no money and no job will motivate you in ways you can't imagine."

... As the NIKE ad says: "Just Do It!" ... From internet searches, to networking, to resume writing, to correspondence, to interviewing, to unemployment benefits, to career counseling, to budgeting one's money - it's all here in this helpful book. Read it, and then WORK IT! ... YOWZA! - The Aeolian Kid
