Book Description
The provisional city is one of constant erasure and eruption. Through what Dana Cuff calls a "convulsive urban act," developers both public and private demolish an urban site and disband its inhabitants, replacing it with some vision of a better life that leaves no trace of the former structure. Architects bring their own utopian dreams to the process. In this book Cuff examines those convulsions through two underestimated dimensions of architectural and urban form: scale and the politics of property. Scale is intimately tied to degree of disruption: the larger a project's scale, the greater the upheaval. As both culture and geography, real estate plays an equally significant role in urban formation.
Focusing on Los Angeles, Cuff looks at urban transformation through the architecture and land development of large-scale residential projects. She demonstrates the inherent instability of very large sites. Having created perverse renditions of the very problems they sought to solve, for example, public housing projects that underwent upheaval in the 1940s and 1950s are doing so again.
Cuff explores five cases that span the period from the 1930s, when federal support for slum clearance and public housing caused convulsions near downtown, to a huge 1990s' mixed-use development on one of Los Angeles's last remaining wetlands. The story takes us from the refined modernist architecture of Richard Neutra to the self-conscious populism of the New Urbanism. The cases illuminate the relationship of housing architecture to issues of race, class, urban design, geography, and political ideology.

Book Description
This is a detailed, step-by-step guide to putting together a cable TV program and getting it aired locally and around the country, on the cheap, proving that it's easy and fun to have your own TV show. How to Star in Your Own TV Show for $50 or Less shows the reader step by step: what to do the show about, how to organize the show, where to do the show and where to air the show. Formats covered include Demonstration, Talk, Variety, Performance and Just You. Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, anyone who wants to express himself/herself on television, anyone who has always dreamed of starring in a TV show but never knew how, will grab this informative book right off the shelf. Readers learn: Actors don't have to wait for casting agents to call; Musicians don't need to spend thousands of dollars to make a video; Nonprofit organizations can tape PSAs for their causes; Instructors and coaches can teach a skill such as a musical instrument or a sport on TV; Professionals can use TV to get new clients; There isn't a book in the marketplace like this! Other books cover more technical aspects of TV production, but this book tells anyone how to have fun, accomplish personal goals and appear on television. It is also filled with many insider tips on how to get the most out of TV studios.

A more appropriate title for this book would have been "Charmin."
Unfortunately the pages are only one-ply.
Hardly An Insider's Guide.......2000-07-30
I'm currently in film school, concentrating on TV production, and came across this book while doing some initial research on technical aspects related television production. I was disappointed to find this self-produced paperback provided nothing more than an amateur's perspective on shows the writer produced at a local access station. The title itself, claiming people can be a "star," precisely demonstrates the problem with the book's content - or lack thereof - in ignoring the fact that people should be concerned with talent and professionalism, not wanting to be a "star." In addition to various typos and incorrect statements, the author seems more concerned with trying to convince people they can get a free haircut or limo ride by doing their own show rather than stressing they learn the craft of production, writing, performing, etc. to become successful. Such bad advice is what separates those who succeed and those who fail not only in TV and film, but in life in general. Cable access is great for those who genuinely want to do a community service in bringing people information, however it serves as nothing more than a breeding ground for mediocrity for those who want to be "stars."
Great book...for the 90s.......2000-06-29
Who cares about public access anymore? The days of "Wayne & Garth" have long passed. Although the style of writing in this book certainly has a feel for a prior era, that doesn't mean that the overall effort is worth spending money on. Besides, all of this information is available free of charge at your local cable station. As I've said, public access is dead in Los Angeles, so I can't imagine it being such an enthralling subject in the obscure places that the other "reviewers" on this site are allegedly from. If any of you are serious about appearing on television, develop your talent and pursue it in a professional manner...this route is strictly for amateurs.
A Woman's Perspective.......2000-06-17
As a professional and very successful woman (baby boomer) and fan of Tony Robbins, I found the book to be inspiring and fun. Here in NYC we have mnn public access tv--which he has mentioned(thank you). I have been doing a community based show for years and found Mr. Darby's information very helpful and inspiring. I encourage other women out there to read it, get inspired and do your own show. How about talking about breast cancer? Or work discrimination? There are issues we need to talk about, and Mr. Darby is correct in the power of public access tv. We can make a difference. Thank you. As Tony Robbins says, "Live with Passion!"
Public Access Wackos & all.......2000-06-17
Yeah, I worked with the author and must say... he's got guts! Writing a book about public access tv is opening himself up for trouble. But I loved it! I was an intern/producer (and got to be intern of the month) with him for a few years and man we did some fresh things. And it's all in this book! I only wish he wrote more about the "dirt!" We broke alot of rules, but he cared more about us, than the cable station. I liked all the stories about producers and shows we worked on--believe me they are true! But he left out alot of the wild and weird (even illegal) stuff. I've even went to other studios and found them very uninspiring--boring! My friends and I all bought copies and donated some to local schools. Now they are doing shows too! At the studio we got involved in working with non-profit organizations doing public service announcements--they should use this book too! I also liked the section about us interns, the editing and camera classes, the funny trafficking story, all the fun shows that people were doing and his love and honesty for people. He taught us all well and now we're out in the real world making a go of it. And I have the author to thank for that. Rock on dude! Note to other interns: check his book out and re-live the memories! P.S. Hey Glenn, remember "pan left, no the other left?" Love ya, man! How can we get in touch with him?

An Excellent Treatment of an Important Subject.......2003-05-10
Dexter Dunphy and colleagues have written an excellent volume based on their work in Australia pulling together the environmental community and the corporations they criticized to find common ground. They develop a solid framework for assessing sustainability in a sense far broader than just the environment, establishing stages by which corporate and community action can be assessed. Carefully selected examples and cases illustrate their points. Their intellectual framework is similar to the one used to look at diversity here in the United States, and manages to demystify and depoliticize at the same time.
The environmentalist, the corporate social responsibility advocate and the organization development practitioner will all find what they need in this book. The last chapter reads like the proposal for Dexter's latest book, but this one is the place to start.
I can't wait to hear Dexter keynote at the Organization Development Network's Conference in Portland, Oregon in October!
Actioning Sustainabililty.......2001-03-06
A terrific compilation of contemporary Australian thinking about actioning sustainability. Essential reading for all those involved with transforming organisations around sustainability principles.

Book Description
The clear market leader in the corporate finance course, this text filled a very definite need for a MODERN corporate finance text back in 1983 when the first edition was published. It is known for its intuitive, conversational style and for being able to tie together many of the important ideas in corporate finance. The author's discussions and illustrations are unique due to the depth of detail blended with a distinct sense of humor. This new edition will continue to be authoritative and student friendly but will also carry stronger, modern coverage reflected by current examples and data as well as unique emphasis upon agency issues.

blah blah blah..........2007-03-13
good basic financial principles... not much for interest, but does do a descent job of conveying and illustrating basic financial principles.
A solid introduction to corporate finance.......2003-05-23
This Brealey and Myers's textbook, now in its 7th edition, introduces the student to the fascinating world of corporate finance. The first few chapters of the book demystify Net Present Value, the preferred method for calculating the value of an investment project. Brealey and Myers then explain how risk and return are related and introduce the Capital Asset Pricing Model. The CAPM's strengths and weaknesses are both explored in detail. The authors continue by analyzing the significance of dividend policy and debt policy for a corporation -- including the rather surprising result that in perfect markets these just don't matter! The next topic is options, financial and real; major pricing models are covered, and warrants and convertibles get a fair treatment, too. The remaining parts of the book deal with a variety of topics such as valuing debt, managing financial risks, financial planning as well as mergers and corporate governance.
At 1071 pages, Principles of Corporate Finance can hardly be called a short book. Introductory textbooks often suffer from a "too-much-too-little" syndrome, in that numerous topics are covered, but none too well. Brealey and Myers easily avoid this pitfall. Their writing is solid and manages to keep the reader's interest. Although available space puts a limit on what can be said, the book's coverage is quite comprehensive and well linked to the results of modern research. Moreover, all topics receive their fair share of treatment so you can actually understand the theories the book presents. It should be noted here that some mathematical background is probably necessary to make the book easy reading.
Each chapter contains many problems which can be used to facilitate the learning process. I found them very useful. The only complaint I have about the book (International Edition) is that the binding proved less than perfect, as after a while pages started separating from the main body of the work. But that is a problem I can live with.
All in all, an interesting, readable, authoritative introduction to corporate finance.
CORPORATE FINANCE BIBLE ON WALL STREET.......2003-03-20
I have used this book three times now: as an undergraduate in financial economics, at the training program at an investment bank, and at the core finance course at my MBA. It is a very good resource and learning tool, going from the very basic ideas of discounting all the way to options pricing and more innovative finance.
This is the preferred learning tools of all finance professors I have met and the reference used by all finance professionals I met. It is very simple to follow the concepts of the book, especially if you purchase the study guide that is available with it.
The only major concern I have heard is that it does not deal with the more recent finance problems of off-balance sheet financing and other shenanigans. This is a book meant to teach basic financial theory, so those topics, in my opinion, are better treated elsewhere.
Book ..........2003-01-03
This books [is bad] primarily because it is called "Principles of Corporate Finance". This is NOT AN INTRO book to finance. An intro book would have spent more time going over basic concepts like balance sheets and income statement. Also the sample problems at times can be really hard to follow. I highly recommend using Fundamentals of Corporate Finance by Ross, Westerfield, and Jordan as a supplement to this if you have no finance background.
Inappropriate for intro MBA finance but professors love it.......2002-08-30
The wide range of reactions to this textbook simply indicates the fact that it is NOT actually a good introductory text for the typically diverse MBA student mix found in any intro-level course. Yet that is PRECISELY the usage for which it is known: intro-level corporate finance classes in MBA programs. My MBA program also used B&M, but a group of us simultaneously volunteered for a focus group run by the publisher of Aswath Damodaran's excellent Corporate Finance textbook. We followed the Damodaran text alongside our B&M text for the entire semester. At semester's end EVERY SINGLE MBA IN THE FOCUS GROUP preferred Damodaran's text -- and the group contained electrical engineers with graduate degrees and former I-bank analysts as well as former ballet dancers and journalists. Damodaran is an award-winning finance professor at NYU. B&M is heavy on the academic scholarship, far removed from the real hurley-burley of Wall Street, and despite the humour (which I did enjoy) it cannot successfully meet the needs of a broad range of students. Yet it continues to be used for just that purpose -- indeed, my MBA alma mater ignored the student feedback and continues to use B&M, the professors' darling... If you are suffering with this text, do yourself a favour and get Damodaran's, which is a text designed to TEACH by a professor who truly cares that ALL his students master corporate finance.

Book Description
So what is schmoozing? According to Webster's unabridged dictionary, schmoozing is a yiddish word that means to chat or to converse idly. But today there is a common misconception, the word has come to suggest a con or trickery. It's not. Schmoozing is the Golden Rule at full throttle. It's a thrill and an art form that encourages people to say, "you've made my day" instead of demanding "make my day". It's a technique for turning others on, not taking others on. A schmoozer is someone who talks to people as if they really mattered-and they do!

Have It Your Way.......2007-05-09
Schmooze your way into better service and discounts with these tips. There won't be anything you won't be able to talk your way into.
Good schmoozing tips...........2007-03-09
The book is funny and it provides good schmoozing tips for you to try. I agree and would actually try 70% of the authors ideas/tips...and I think you do get better service, freebies, discounts when you do some of these things. The rest of his tips were too bold and out there for me to even attempt. Oh and towards the end of the book, he goes off and starts talking about personal issues and what he did to get through them....I was like 'Yadi yadi...lets move on' and skipped those pages. Overall the book was entertaining and would probably pass it along to friends.
ummmm.......2007-01-11
Bought the audio version on Penn's recommendation from his web site.
It is pretty weak. Some good points but not worth it to me. You get some schmoozing stuff then it quickly rambles off into personal relationships etc. Fine but not what I bought it for.
Ewwww!.......2005-07-29
The advice he gives is totally absurd! If a guy came to where I was working and greeted me with "Hey Good Lookin!" and handed me a cheap teddy bear, I'd think he was a sexual predator!
Maybe this stuff works in some places, but in the Midwest, you'd really creep people out. I mean..."hey Good Lookin'"? Ewww!
Schmooze Me?.......2005-05-26
I loved The Golden Rule of Schmoozing, The Authentic Practice of Treating Others Well, by comedian and author Aye Jaye. In fact, I enjoyed the book so much that after borrowing it from my local library, I went out and purchased it. This is unusual for me, as I rarely even keep books I have read through.
The Golden Rule of Schmoozing reminds me of Dale Carnegie on steroids. It's an entertaining, easy-read book filled with examples of how to lay on schmooze anytime, anywhere. I'd have to say that the purpose of schmoozing is to just enhance the quality of life; to make The Road more bearable, if not enjoyable. Schmoozing is all about respect, being nice and taking the extra step in relationships.
I liked the way Aye Jaye defines schmoozing in such a positive light: "Schmoozing is The Golden Rule at full throttle." "It's a skill and an art form that encourages people to say, "You've made my day..." "A schmoozer is someone who talks to people as if they really mattered..." To my mind, this book reminds us that what goes around, eventually comes around. Well-placed schmooze can result in good Karma and good fortune, albeit random, but I'd take random over nothing!
One thing that threw me was the Foreword written by Penn and Teller. Not being a fan, I was glad that it was short. It didn't even hint at the quality of content to come.
The extensive Table of Contents illustrates the far-ranging arenas for schmooze.

I particularly enjoyed Aye Jaye's examples, rendered from his own life experience and those of friends and acquaintances, which drive home the point of each chapter. It was also fun to learn of the unintended (and sometimes intended) reciprocating schmooze by schmooze-recipients.
I've learned that even shy and introverted people can schmooze. This book enables the charm and charisma in otherwise inhibited people, by explaining how natural it is and illustrating the positive effects on both the schmoozer and "schmoozee". If more people were aware of the schmooze-effect it would lead to happier and more satisfying relationships across the board.
This book is recommended for all.

ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Cards
ASIN: 1599129078 |
Product Description
This Audiofy audiobook chip packs Penn Jillette's full 3 hour reading of "The Golden Rule of Schmoozing" on a tiny memory card. A single Audiofy audiobook chip, hardly larger than a stamp, holds a complete digital audiobook, and saves the last listening position automatically, unlike CDs. With an SD memory card slot or low-cost adapter - like those for digital cameras - this Audiofy audiobook chip can be played on Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh desktop computers or laptops (Microsoft Windows XP/2000/Me/98, or Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 and above) or transferred to Apple iPod media players. Audiobook chips also move seamlessly to most Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld PDAs with SD expansion slots, as well as Treo and Windows Mobile "smartphones" (Palm OS 5.2 or Windows Mobile 2002 and above)... So what is schmoozing? According to Webster's unabridged dictionary, schmoozing is a Yiddish word that means to chat or to converse idly. But today the word has come to suggest a con or trickery. It's not. Schmoozing is the Golden Rule at full throttle. It's a technique for turning others on, not taking others on. A schmoozer is someone who talks to people as if they really mattered - and they do! AUTHOR: Aye Jaye is a stand-up comedian, lecturer, and member of the Clown Hall of Fame. He has entertained millions at Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Rose Bowl, and Radio City Music Hall and has played the White House seven times. REVIEWS: "This self-help audio is read with considerable humor and feeling by Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller fame. Highly recommended." - Library Journal. "After three hours of Jillette's gregarious salt of the earth narration listeners will come away believing that schmoozing is more natural and attainable than most of us ever imagined..." - Quill & Quire. "Pick up The Golden Rule of Schmoozing and learn how you can transform yourself from Nervous Norvess to Cary Grant. Penn Jillette, the magician, reads Aye Jaye's three-hour Schmoozing." - Playboy.
