    Book Description

This guide to the palace of the Ottoman sultans in Istanbul takes the reader through all the rooms and gardens that are open to the public--and some that are not. It records the changes that the buildings have suffered through fire, earthquakes and the endless fight for space. Treasures, kaftans and furnishings are discussed as is food and drink. Above all, the book is about the thousands who lived in the saray and what they did and feared and saw, whether they were viziers, students or women.

              Book Description

In this study of how daily newspapers in America have developed electronic publishing ventures, Pablo Boczkowski shows that new media emerge not just in a burst of revolutionary technological change but by merging the structures and practices of existing media with newly available technical capabilities. His multi-disciplinary perspectives of science and technology, communication, and organization studies allow him to address the connections between technical, editorial, and work facets of new media. This approach yields analytical insights into the material culture of online newsrooms, the production processes of new media products, and the relationships between offline and online dynamics.

Boczkowski traces daily newspapers' early consumer-oriented non-print publishing initiatives, from the now-forgotten videotex efforts of the 1980s to the rise of the World Wide Web in the mid- 1990s. He then examines the formative years of news on the Web during the second half of the 1990s, when the content of online newspapers varied from simple reproduction of the print edition to new material with interactive and multimedia features. With this picture of the recent history of non-print publishing as background, Boczkowski provides ethnographic, fly-on-the-wall accounts of three innovations in content creation: the Technology section of the New York Times on the Web, which was initially intended as the newspaper's space for experimentation with online news; the Virtual Voyager project of the HoustonChronicle.com, in which reporters pushed the envelope of multimedia journalism; and the Community Connection initiative of New Jersey Online, in which users became content producers. His analyses of these ventures reveal how innovation in online newspapers became an ongoing process in which different combinations of initial conditions and local contingencies led publishers along divergent paths of content creation.

                  Book Description

For over 30 years environmental policy has developed under the assumption that self-interest explains firms' environmental behavior and that the problem of pollution can be rectified by technological fixes. This policy paradigm has been proved wrong: entrenched antagonism between firms and regulators, and greater environmental harm, have proved to be the dominant outcomes. This book re-focuses environmental policy analysis by demonstrating how behavioral models can be applied within the field to better understand the propensity of the firm to engage in pro-environmental, innovative activities.

The book develops an essential tool for environmental policy analysis in the context of technical change. A rigorous theoretical and methodological framework is applied to identify sources of firms' willingness (or resistance) to engage in cleaner production and to evaluate under which conditions the firm's pro-environmental, innovative behavior may be fostered. The author undertakes extensive research through a case study of the In-Bond industry in Mexico and assesses the significance and relationship of individual factors relating to a firm's innovative behavior towards `greener' production. The model developed helps to understand the planned behavior of the firm in specific contexts, to shape and guide empirical inquiry, and to produce useful corporate and public policy recommendations.

Environmental Policy and Technological Innovation comprehensively explores the factors which can influence a firm's behavioral approach towards developing clean technologies. Unlike many other studies on environmental policy, it addresses the origin of the problems and not just the symptoms. It will become an indispensable companion for local, national and international environmental regulators, environmental policymakers and analysts, and those interested in technological innovation and technology policy.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars Business consultant.......2007-05-08

I disagree with the earlier reviewers. I don't know what their purpose was for using the Almanac, but I keep it as reference for business. It covers a large number of job decriptions, white collar and blue collar. It explains the usual path to the various careers, and has a lot of salary data. While much of the salary data is out of date, it cites the sources of the data which is usually the key indutry trade group. Googling these sources can give you the latest information on the particular carreer and is worth the price of the book. It's too bad there has not been an update since 2000-2001.

1 out of 5 stars Is everyone a CEO or celebrity?.......2000-09-15

I found this book to be plagued with salaries and jobs for the minority of job seekers. If you are planning on becoming a dancer or a CEO, this book is for you. Otherwise, don't waste your time. All you will be doing is extrapolating through inference what the salary of the job position you are seeking is.

2 out of 5 stars Salaries Not Current.......2000-02-23

If you are purchasing this book to use as a current salary reference, you will be disappointed. Many of the tables show salaries from 1997, some as old as 1995, and many have not been updated since the last edition.
