Great Book on Trompe L'Oeil artists, their murals and history.......2005-12-31

I initially picked this book thinking it was an instructional manual. It is not. What it has are beautiful photographs of various famous and not so famous trompe l'oeil artists' works. It includes historical background, descriptions of some of the art but best of all the glorious works of art themselves. I do think this is a wonderful book for the advanced artist, but it is definitely eye-candy worth having in your library.

Excellent book for going to the next step........2001-06-09

Although there is a need for beginning trompe l'oeil painters, it was great to have a book that takes the next step. Even a beginner can get a better idea of what is out there. I will enjoy this book for some time. This book helps with examples of scale, and depth perception to further increase the believability of the illusion. Great book!

Superb!.......2000-09-03

As an artist, researcher and lecturer on Trompe l'oeil past and present, Ms Wrigley's collection includes some of the best of the best of contemporary work. I only wish she had included more.

Wonderfully illustrated book for experienced artists........1999-09-27

Although beautifully illustrated and inspiring, this book did not provide any helpful, basic information that I needed to get started in the art of trompe l'oeil.

Inspiring images for students of trompe l'oeil........1998-07-04

As a student of trompe l'oeil I purchased this book hoping to get new ideas and inspiring images. This book provides just that. I had to order two more copies for my art teacher and her assistant. The photographs alone makes the book worth ordering.

To truly fool the eye, trompe l'oeil painting must display convincing perspective, proper depth of field, and a credible play of light and shadow. Jocelyn Kerr Holding carefully explores these principles and many more, with detailed explanations of all the basic considerations behind the creation of a trompe l'oeil image and the various techniques available for achieving it, including perforating an existing drawing, painting freehand, projecting a photograph, and using photocopies in a decoupage manner. Despite the "quick and easy" promise of the book's title, however, many beginners will be intimidated by the process as presented here, since Holding offers no patterns (other than a small section of architectural motifs for photocopying) and presumes an existing comfort level with the handling of paint and perspective on the part of the reader to achieve, in her words, "a freehand reproduction of reality." But those seeking a decent primer on the art of trompe l'oeil will find much useful information here, along with some nicely rendered eye-fooling images of book- and object-filled shelves, landscape views, and animals. --Amy Handy

Quick & Easy Trompe I'Oeil is an outstanding how-to guide to decorative painting on walls, furniture and even bricks and presents easy step-by-step techniques for using the trompe i'oeil technique. A range of examples of pictorial art from all styles, from still life to Surrealistic paintings, provide painters with many different ideas to choose from, while the techniques are easy to follow and duplicate. Color photos pack the presentation.

Fool the Reader.......2001-01-02

Jocelyn Kerr Holding's book is misleading and insulting with it's self-presentation as a"Quick & Easy" how-to book. In her chapter titled "Easy Trompe L'Oeil" She has the nerve to say "With those of you tackling this technique for the first time in mind, I decided to describe six easy projects simple to draw and amusing to do. The "step-by-step" explinations which follow have been written...so they can be carried out without too many dificulites". But her steps are vauge and useless, rarely haveing more than four steps. You can not learn how to paint wood grain or marble in four steps, although marble is presented here in three meaningless steps. So as a learning tool this book is useless. I would recommend instead Trompe L'Oeil Creating Decorative Illusions with Paint by Roberta Gordon-Smith or Painting Murals by Patricia Seligman, for new muralist. However, if you are a skilled artist versed in most forms of Trompe L'oeil, but are looking for classic examples of the technique, there are some lovely examples in this book. I'm keeping my copy as refrence material, which is how it should have been presented.

Intriguing Images.......2002-05-28

These intriguing images, which range from sun-drenched to claustrophobic, have a dreamy quality, like a silent film. The photographs capture a graciously Bohemian culture that foreshadowed 1960's counterculture, and they faintly hint at the stylish decadence of 1920's Hollywood. They depict a time when the western regions of Los Angeles were both urbane and pastoral--a time when a starlet such as Tuesday Weld could feel comfortable driving on city streets in an open convertible--a time before personal style had degraded to the level of shaved heads, jauntily oriented baseball caps, and lapses in grooming. In photo number 120, the "Sunset Strip Riot" at Pandora's Box kicks off the 1960's upheavals that would be precisely defined by Dennis Hopper's Easy Rider just three years later. This photo is shot at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Crescent Heights, just down the road from the Hopper residence. In the background of the photo, behind the street action, is the site of The Garden of Alla, demolished 7 years previously, and perhaps the most prominent meeting place for the graciously Bohemian Hollywood crowd of the 1920's.

Description:
While anti-citizenship behavior (ACB) is under-researched across all academic domains, sales and marketing researchers have not done any work in the area. This oversight is significant given recent survey data that suggests sales representatives are misbehaving at an alarming rate; 60% of sales managers have caught their reps cheating on expense reports (an example of ACB) and 36% believe such behavior has gotten worse over the past several years. Directed towards the goal of understanding salesperson ACB, this research provides the first conceptual model of ACB in the sales force. The model contends that characteristics of the organization (justice and intra-firm competition) and contextual factors (fit and job stress) directly affect the performance of ACB while individual level factors (locus of control, self-monitoring and introversion) moderate the performance of these behaviors. In addition, this research explains the intra- and inter-organizational consequences of salesperson ACB and suggests several ways by which managers can address this issue.

From the author: This study evaluated the validity of an interactional approach for studying workplace deviance. It was hypothesized that the relationship between organizational justice and workplace deviance would be stronger for employees who are lower in socialization or higher in impulsivity. Data collected from 151 employed undergraduate students offered some support for person by situation interactions after controlling for gender, age, and tenure. Interactions between interactional justice and the two personality traits were significant, indicating that there is only a relationship between interactional justice and workplace deviance when employees are lower in socialization or higher in impulsivity. Further, results indicated that including personality variables in addition to organizational justice enhanced the prediction of workplace deviance.
