Architect George Howe thought there were three pioneers of American architecture: Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, and William L. Price. Although history has borne out Howe's observation on Sullivan and Wright, Will Price still awaits discovery. ?

Price, a disciple of Frank Furness who practiced in Philadelphia from 1833 to 1916, established the architectural character of the two of the nation's greatest resorts, Atlantic City and Miami, thus shaping the architecture of the Roaring Twenties. Although his biggest and best-known projects, the Art Deco Traymore Hotel in Atlantic City and the Chicago Freight Terminal, are both destroyed, his arts and crafts utopian community in Arden, Delaware survive to attest to the vigor of his ideas and the leadership he exerted.?

Price left a legacy of exquisite houses, railway stations, and commercial structures stretching from Atlantic City to Chicago and from Canada to Florida taht were widely emulated and reacall the best works of Frank Lloyd Wright and Greene & Greene. In addition, Price was accomplished writer and furniture designer whose work was regularly featured in Gustav Stickley's The Craftsman.?

Price's role in shaping American architecture in uncovered in this lavishingly illustrated volume, which documents the architects complete works—including over 350 hotels, houses, and pieces of furniture—bringing to light this unknown American master.

3 out of 5 stars A Great Architect, less great book.......2000-04-16

William Price is indeed an overlooked architect. While I'm hesistant to call him a genius, his work has a breadth seldom seen in the work of his contemporaries. He was one of the last of the Philadelphia architects to come from a background of manual training rather than an academic background, but clearly he was able to apply the lessons of contemporary practice learned from books, and stretch into new areas of the Arts and Crafts movement and advanced design in reinforced concrete.

The author spends an inordinate amount of time in the book describing how Philadelphia, with a strong heritage of innovative industrial design is left behind in the architectural world due to an academic bias of the press based in New York and Boston. While this is important to Price's reputation, it has little to do with his actual work. The prose in the book is repititious, reading as a series of loosely related lectures rather than a single thesis, and the book design does not help the reader.

The illustrations, largely drawn from the firm's archive now held by the author, are very well produced, but could have been supplemented by more new photography. A significant number of Price's buildings do survive, and color photography would bring out the great qualities of material, color, and texture that were so important to his work.

In summary, a book on Price was long overdue, but one would have hoped that it would focus more on the great qualities of his architecture.

This study explores the emergence and development of the conservation movement in Argentina during the twentieth century. I argue that the development of the conservation movement has been linked to shifts in the broader spectrum of Argentina's political arena as well as the international political situation as nations competed for the sovereignty of newly acquired territories after the Indian Wars. This book explores the development of Argentina as a nation in relation to conservation of its natural resources as a counter measure to resource extraction. Thus, I establish the relationship between the need for national sovereignty and socio-economic development via the formulation of nature based tourism industry. This strategy was developed by Excequiel Bustillo and spearheaded by the formation of National Park System. The environmental movement in Argentina has been based on the principles of utilitarianism, and the National Park System of Argentina was instrumental in establishing hegemonic national identity and sovereignty in Patagonia. The National Park System institutionalized and for many years was the leading force behind conservation of Argentina's natural resources, and it fostered social and economic development of remote areas through nature based tourism practices.

Disclosing in first-hand terms the nature of the closed and guarded world of Japanese banking, the bank's relationships to its client firms, to members of its "group" and to "outsiders," this provocative work provides an unprecedentedly detailed account of Japanese banking practices and the relationship between Japanese banks and their client firms.

5 out of 5 stars The real story of Japanese main banks.......2002-09-19

Transaction cost economics introduced the concept of hierarchy (or company) to explain the raison d¡¯etre of the firm. The existence of the firm beside the market stands as a puzzle to neoclassical economics. If all the resources are distributed through the market mechanism, why there should be the company? Activities in and out of the firm are intrinsically economic one which is not that different from the one performed on the market. But those are not performed on the based on price mechanism. Then what¡¯s the rationality of the existence of the company? Setting up the company could be considered as rational economic action? Judging from experience, it¡¯s definitely so. Transaction cost is introduced to solve this discrepancy between theory and practice. Market activities are inherently bridled with ¡®incomplete information¡¯. ¡®Rational¡¯ market actor should rely on limited information to transact on the market (bounded rationality). The bounded rationality invites transaction cost beside nominal price on every transaction. The company is the device to reduce that cost. Its explanation seems successful. And thereafter transaction cost economics has become the dominant theory in economics of organization. But it pulls another puzzle towards us: it sounds great. Then how to explain the interaction between firms? They cite the opportunistic behavior between contractors. But examples of Japanese firms counter such modeling. Company lives with other firms. They compete and cooperate with each other. It goes without saying that their basic motive is selfish: making money, in other word, market-rational. But like all other human affair, their relation presupposes the rule and the other. The rule could be formal statute or implicit custom. The other could be competitors, or suppliers, cooperators, customers. Transaction cost economics retains the limited rationality model of economic man. So a limited picture is it that they can¡¯t draw up whole story of reality. Here comes the concept of institution and network.
This book is a case study of Japanese interfirm network, widely known as keiretsu. Japanese interfirm network has been recognized as very unique one. Competition and cooperation between Japanese companies are not entirely market-based. ¡®Trust¡¯ has been attributed to it to describe their relationship. But author argues that they make some points, But such a story lacks clarity, and that, does not fit well into the reality of Japanese business. Drawing up a realistic picture is the aim of this book. Such a drawing needs the in-depth field research from scratch. There has been plethora of literature on Japanese keiretsu, but, author argues, not much useful one based on real story. For example, according to the dominant theory in the West, Japanese main banks take the role of corporate governance instead of market. They play the role of signaling, monitoring and rescuing in the behalf of themselves and other stakeholders. But author argues that that kind of picture is no more than tatemae (socially correct story). The honne (real story) is quite different. The relationship between main bank and its client firm is imbued with ¡®relational transaction¡¯ and power imbalance. Relational transaction is peculiar to Japanese business. To do business, company should take part in some group. This is what is called as trust. But it¡¯s far from pastoral scenery. Basically, the relationship functions as power amplifier to the firm: to mobilize as much resources as possible against other. Resources are like these: financing, information, political clout on regulatory bodies, customers, and the like. So we can conclude that inter-group relationship is inherently political. But interfirm relationship within group is far from genial. It¡¯s characterized by the power imbalance based on resource imbalance between them. The relationship between main bank and client firm is based on information imbalance. Here main bank take the upper side. Contrary to tatemae, such as monitoring, rescuing, their relations are deeply based on self-interest.

5 out of 5 stars Revealing insight into Japan's financial markets.......1997-11-19

Few Americans have the experience and breadth of knowledge about the Japanese economy as Mark Scher, who has spent the last 25 years mining its secrets. Finding that most western Paradigms about the Japanese economy don't fit the facts, Scher developed his own. Scher's work is widely known and respected in Europe (his Phd is from the University of Manchester, no less). However, our "Chicago School" economists will not be satisfied with a perspective that suggests that something other than a totally free market can work.

With the economy finally reviving around the world, many companies will begin to make capital expenditures in new capacity, new capabilities, added hardware and software, and development of new products. Having spent the last five years spending as little money as possible, many of these companies will not be rigorous enough in checking out their choices. Professor Kursh's book is an essential resource for any company that is not very good at evaluating and managing such investments.

The normal process behind making investments involves an advocate who spends a lot of time massaging the numbers so that the investment can be justified . . . and answering an occasional question about why the investment is or is not a good idea. Much more needs to be done. Anyone who reads and applies Professor Kursh's book can expect to avoid bad investments, spend less on good ones, and get the results they want faster.

The book describes a process that begins with a preliminary analysis to see if it's even worth spending time on the opportunity, then proceeds through an assessment of the business impact of making the decision to go forward, examines risks and how to handle them, looks carefully into what must be done for successful execution and how to be sure that will follow, and ends with a look at how to manage the implementation and its aftermath. I know of no other business book that looks at this full gamut of important issues. This book will be like gold in the hands of those who propose and run investment projects.

Professor Kursh makes many references to popular business books like Good to Great and Execution as reference points for his futher development of the issues raised in those books. He then gives the reader excellent questions to ask and lots of examples of how to do the examination. At the end of each section, there is also a detailed example that is developed throughout the book as a continuity reference.

The book ends with an excellent appendix that describes the various financial measures that need to be examined in order to follow this process. Even someone who is not familiar with accounting will be able to use this appendix to do a better microeconomic analysis of investments.

Professor Kursh has a lot of experience in the software industry, and the book is worth its price just for his many examples of how to avoid making mistakes in adding new software . . . something that more and more companies are doing and having problems with.

Not every investment will require the full analysis described in the book, but for critical applications the full monty will make sense. This book will be most valuable in the small organization where a small group of managers or entrepreneurs need to make "bet the company" investments and do not have a lot of other people to help test their thinking.

I was especially pleased to see that Professor Kursh explained the many ways that a project can get off track and how to determine whether to get it back on track . . . or to simply stop where you are.

The book is written in simple language with simple examples. The ideas behind the language and examples are very sophisticated and profound. Seldom have I seen a book that brings such sophisticated thinking in an accessible way to beginning managers. Very nice job, Professor Kursh!

This book would make an excellent text for undergraduate business students and M.B.A. candidates as well.

After you finish this book, think about what investments you have been avoiding because you were concerned about the risks they present. Then use this book to help you sort through them.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely useful and well explained.......2004-05-19

As someone who does not have a great deal of experience in making investment decisions, I found this book extremely valuable and easy to follow. The guidelines to implementing strategy are straight-forward and explained in a manner that I can not only grasp, but find relevant to the decisions I am making today. Great choice for someone looking to be more involved in investment decision-making.

                Book Description

Administrators and directors of non-profit organizations (NPOs) face most of the same challenges and problems that confront their counterparts in profit making organizations. And while there are certain concepts of administration that are fairly universal in nature, they have to be applied sensitively to the unique situations facing every NPO. Author Robert D. Hay suggests that there is a body of knowledge that can be mastered by NPO managers that can transform a hit-or-miss approach into a professional method for achieving professional results within the context of each NPO's own unique environment, strengths and weaknesses, and managerial philosophy. Comprehensive in its approach, Strategic Management in Non-Profit Organizations covers not only the development of strategic management planning, but also its integration into the organization's operative functions, such as operations, marketing, personnel, and finance. A distinctive feature of the book is a self-management evaluation of various objectives, strategies, and policies of the various functions which each non-profit organization has to perform. The self-evaluations will aid administrators not only in making strategic decisions but also in evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of their performance in accomplishing the objectives. The three introductory chapters of Part I provide essential background material on the nature of NPOs, the nature of management, and the nature of strategy. Part II is concerned with strategy formulation as it is conditioned by each NPO's specific philosophy and goals. Integrating the overall mission into the operative functions of any NPO--operations, marketing, personnel, and financing functions--is addressed in Part III. In strategy implementation, the focus of Part IV, the major emphasis is placed on the managerial functions which have to be performed: planning, acquiring, organizing, leading, coordinating, and evaluating. Based on 15 years of research of 65 different non-profit organizations, Strategic Management of Non-Profit Organizations is an in-depth response to the needs expressed by these organizations. This volume will be profitably read by all who have a vital interest in providing the services of NPOs as well as those associated with public agencies.
