Book Description
Best-selling author Claudia Nice provides all the information artists need to create gorgeous country garden art. She reviews basic watercolor techniques, including glazing and texturing, along with basic pen and ink techniques for producing a variety of line textures.
Readers will find valuable step-by-step demonstrations utilizing a variety of media. They'll begin by drawing in pencil, then add watercolor and/or pen and ink. In addition to flowers, Claudia shows how to illustrate a variety of leaves, vines, moss, ferns and other country scene details, including rabbits, dogs, statues, birdbaths, wagon wheels, weathered wood arbors, fences and more.
Customer Reviews:
Pen and ink painting.......2007-08-23
I love pen and ink painting as it looks delicate. It takes the same amount of time to do as an oil painting but has a different look. This book gives me more choices to pick from and adds more depth with the texture lessons.
Watercolor .......2006-08-24
Claudia Nice not only tells you how to use watercolor, but what colors she uses in the examples.
Country Gardens in Watercolor,Pen & Ink........2006-07-05
I find that this book explains procedures excellently and items are illustrated with good follow through steps making it very easy to follow. I have learnt some real shortcuts to problem areas I had.
The most recent in my collection!.......2003-05-12
I admit it: I am hooked on books by Claudia Nice. Pen & ink can be quite an intense media. Claudia Nice simplifies the techniques and conveys the instruction as only as master can, and does it in her trademark informal, friendly manner. Another aspect I love is her use of watercolor to bring her works to life. The reader gets the treat of two complimentary media in one book: pen & ink and watercolor.
For the beginner, I might recommend starting with her other books before attempting the more advanced exercises and techniques in Painting Country Gardens. The perfect introduction is Sketching Your Favorite Subjects in Pen & Ink, followed by Painting with Watercolor, Pen & Ink, and then perhaps Creating Textures in Pen & Ink with Watercolor.
There are more technical books on pen & ink technique for advanced students, some intimidatingly so; but for the beginning to intermediate artist, no series of books is as valuable for developing sound technique. And certainly no other books are as intimate, casual, and just plain fun as those by Claudia Nice.
Gorgeous, beautiful!!.......2002-09-22
This book is beautiful and gorgeous! If you enjoy nature and taking field trips to pretty gardens, fields or just plain nature, you'll love this book! It has gushing pictures just delicately drawn. You'll fantasize this book your own personal treasure.

Book Description
A practical and inspiring watercolour and pastel book on an ever-popular subject. Flowers and gardens provide irresistible subject matter to amateur artists. However inspiration from their own gardens or the wealth of parks and public gardens about the country is not always easy to translate on paper. As an accomplished painter who also has a passion for flowers and gardens, Alison Hoblyn brings readers a rare insight into the practicalities of painting with watercolour and pastel, plus the problems and pleasures to be encountered in capturing the essence of a garden scene. In addition to giving sound, practical advice, the book takes readers further by relating the observations made through painting gardens to an understanding of their design. It also shows how to bring the best out of individual blooms, and groups of flowers.

Painting Flowers and Gardens in Watercolor and Pastel.......2005-02-06
This is one of the worst art books I have ever purchased. I thought it would be a mixed medium method or a way to combine watercolor and pastels. Each medium was handled separately. The pastel portion was a disgrace. It was very childlike. I am a pastel and watercolorist. Any other book on beginning pastel would be better. The watercolor would be informative to anyone who new nothing about watercolor. Shame on the publisher for allowing this book to even use the word pastel. I feel I was robbed.
Painting Flowers & Gardens in watercolour and pastel.......2000-04-23
I highly recommend the book Painting Flowers & Gardens in watercolour and pastel. Although not a how to book with step-by-step demonstrations, it nonetheless contains an abundance of technical information. Alison Hobylyn completely opens her worldliness of artistic skills in a delightful commensense manner covering both watercolour and pastel materials, composition, drawing, perspective, and creating mood in a painting. The uniqueness of Hobyn's teaching approach is her ability to use examples of her sensitive painting style and vision to demonstrate the ideas she presents. Anyone searching for the window into the heart, soul, and expertise of a talented watercolour and pastel artist should most definitely read this excellent book.

Book Description
This is a collection of portraits of women using well known paintings as a point of reference. Horvat explores not only the themes of history and portraiture but also illuminates the ways in which women have been viewed over generations. The portraits are not bound by contemporary notions of beauty or the dictates of fashion, nor are they bare imitations of famous paintings. Instead they manage to transcend the elaborate artificiality of their settings to capture qualities of individual beauty which are timeless and unchanging.
Customer Reviews:
Good and bad.......2000-07-10
In his enlightening introduction, Horvat says, "The faces which attract me rarely resemble those I am asked to photograph for fashion magazines."
The pages that follow contain photographs of interesting faces he has selected himself. But Horvat's approach is flawed and the really excellent photographs number only a precious few.
Horvat's pictures look best when he keeps it simple and he allows those faces he loves to shine through. Too often, however, he seems unable to escape the influences of fashion photography, overwhelming and encumbering his subjects with distracting gawdy period costumes.
Horvat's use of color and light results in truly luscious photographs, and the reproductions in this volume are quite good. In my opinion, the book is worth buying just for what is good here.
Photographic Meditations on Timeless Beauty.......2000-03-30
I saw one of this book's 70 photos of women on the cover of Zoom. It's been several years since a "mere" photograph struck me as stunning. The photos are "very similar" to classic portraits by Rembrant, Vermeer and other master artists. The lighting and color look like digital retouching at its most artistic. Some of the models seen to be aware that they are modern women in costume. But most are simply floating outside of time. A small gem.

Book Description
Does economic man exist? Do aggregates exist? Do markets have an essence? How are economic phenomena caused? Do economists believe in the theories they use? These essays seek to unearth the "ontological underworld" that shapes the criteria economists use in making choices among theories to understand economic behavior. These criteria include fundamental, unarticulated ideas regarding the basic constitutents and structure of social reality, that is, about human beings and the social arrangement of their lives. This important collection will be of great value to economists and philosophers of social sciences.

Keynes' theory of probability is interval valued, not ordinal.......2004-12-25
The editor of this volume of collected essays,U Maki, made the mistake of republishing an error filled paper of J.Runde that originally appeared as an invited paper in The Monist(1995).Runde corrected several of his errors regarding Frank Knight, but none of his errors regarding John Maynard Keynes.Runde's essay is then used ,implicitly and/or explicitly,by the other essay authors whenever issues about Keynes and probability, decision making, rationality, expectations, etc.,arises as an issue in their essays.Runde's major error is that he bases his entire discussion of Keynes's approach to the quantification and measurement of probabilities on chapters 3 and 4 of Keynes's A Treatise on Probability(1921;TP).This is precisely the same error made by Frank P. Ramsey, in 1922 and 1926, in two error filled reviews of Keynes's book that Bertrand Russell correctly described as having the least value of any paper written by Ramsey during his brief lifetime(1903-1930).In chapter 3 of the TP,p.37,Keynes warns the reader that his approach to the measurement and quantification of estimating probabilities would not be completed until after Part II of the TP had been finished. In chapter 15(pp.160-163) and chapter 17(p.186-194)of his TP,Keynes makes it crystal clear that by the terms "nonnumerical" and "nonmeasurable" he means not by a single numeral(number)but by TWO numerals.Keynes is the founder of the interval approach to probability. This is directly contrary to Runde's claim that Keynes's theory is strictly a qualitative (comparative)approach involving the use of ordinal rankings, combined with some very special cases of numerical measurement involving frequencies and applications of Keynes's principle of indifference. This would make Keynes's theory inoperative in the real world of actual decision making.Fortunately,Ramsey and Runde are wrong. For Keynes,it is the intervals themselves,if they overlap in any way, which are incomparable, nonrankable, and incommensurable.A simple example is to take the two probability interval estimates [.3,.5] and [.4,.6].These two probabilities can't be ranked or compared. They are "nonnumerical" probabilities.Runde wastes the reader's time by presenting diagrams purporting to represent intervals without the use of any numbers. This conception has absolutely nothing to do with the approach to probability estimation presented in 1921 by Keynes in his TP.We can now summarise Keynes's approach. All probabilities are either point estimates ,involving single numbers, or they are interval estimates, involving two numbers. These latter proabilities can be called nonadditive, imprecise or indeterminate probabilities,as long as the Bayesian interpretation of imprecise is not imputed to Keynes. In chapter 26 of the TP,Keynes incorporated his interval estimate approach into a method for technically dealing with expectations and decision theory.Keynes presented his conventional coefficient of risk and weight,c.The goal of the decision maker is to maximize cA,as opposed to pA,expected value or pU(A),expected utility.c=p(1/(1+q)[2w/(1+w)].Both c and w,which measures the completeness of the potential and actual amount of relevant evidence upon which the decision maker will base his calculation of an estimated probability, are normalized on the unit interval [0,1].Naturally,one will obtain a lower bound and an upper bound when using the c coefficient formula. This would then lead to a "nonnumerical" weighted value and/or "nonnumerical" mathematical expectation or expected value. All of this ,however,is omitted in both Ramsey and Runde. The lesson to be learned is that papers should be carefully examined for errors by editors before they are accepted for publication. The only possible reason for purchasing this book would be if a potential reader wanted to compare the original 1995 Runde article with Runde's 2001 contribution in this volume and see if any learning from experience has occurred. My own opinion is that the reader would be better off just reading chapters 15 and 17 of the TP.

Book Description
Help Wanted is a collection of candid first-person accounts by young people from across the nation, who talk about their first forays into the real world of work. The Chicago Tribune called author Sydney Lewis "the legitimate heir to Studs Terkel," and according to Booklist, Help Wanted "provides a fascinating counterpoint to Terkel's twenty-five-year-old classic, Working." Says Terkel himself, "Sydney Lewis is a natural to do this book. She's on the same wavelength as the young people recounting their first jobs. In its honesty and innocence, it's a strongly moving as well as revealing work." Help Wanted discusses everything from difficult coworkers, tough bosses, and criticism to stringent deadlines, dress codes, and harassment and is a testament to how young people are preparedor not preparedfor their entry into the work force. It also offers tips for surviving the first months on the job and other advice not found in typical career guides.

Extremely inspirational!!!!.......2005-05-05
Help Wanted is a great book. The experiences shared in this book are very inspiring. Being a senior in high school and going off to college this year there is so much pressure into not making a single mistake bein haunted by it "the rest of your life," but this book just goes to proove that everything does happen for a reason and as long as you're not afraid life eventually falls into place regardless of what class you took or finally decided not to take.I really enjoyed this book it has helped me relieve some of the stress many high school seniors are confronted this time of the year.
Job Hunting Help.......2003-07-30
This is a great book full of useful first hand experience in the working world. Lewis interviews twenty-five very different people who have lots to tell about their first experiences. Most say that your first job will definitely not be your last and recommend that you make connections where you can . This is a great book for anyone right out of high school, starting college or just looking for their first job. If nothing more, this book gives confidence to those who are uneasy about getting started in the work force of the world. It shows you what others have done who were worse off than you and what you can accomplish if you try.
Book Description

Every paragraph in each of the books are comprehensive, well researched, engrossing, and just plain fun-to-read, yet are packed with interesting ideas. You'll be using your highlighter a lot! The best part aside from the content is they are very moderately priced. You can also purchase the whole 15 book series the isbn number is 0-910627-26-6. Do not be put off by the low price, these books really do deliver the critical information and eye opening ideas you need you to succeed without the fluff so commonly found in more expensive books on the subject. Highly recommended!
Customer Reviews:
An Awesome Resource for Cost Cutting..........2006-01-27
I worked in restaurants where I felt unappreciated. I pledged to not cut corners in making my staff feel valued in my own establishment. That seemed impossible once I looked at my bottom line. This book reminded me that cutting labor costs could lead to costlier recruiting expenses once my staff flees looking for other work. A simple improvement, such as outsourcing payroll to an online service, is convenient and saves money. I also learned that making my restaurant a safe and enjoyable environment is an act of employee retention. Encouraging my staff, or playing their favorite music in the kitchen, goes a long way in reducing turnover. Even the worst bosses start off with the best intentions. They eventually become so focused on the bottom line that they do not notice their staff's morale. This book shows you how to keep both in sight.
Great Book Wish Every Food Service Employee Would Read It !.......2003-07-10
The table of contents alone gives an impression of how thoroughly this book covers all the aspects of managing costs in restaurants and food service operations. The book is also well organized and accessible - important concepts are clearly explained, and examples are well chosen. And it is also timely: no matter how attractive or imaginative your restaurant might be, controlling costs is critical to maintaining financial stability in a competitive environment.
Here in a single, engaging volume is everything you are likely to encounter (and the answers too!) in keeping costs down and sales up. A recommended investment.
