Do not use this book without an Engineering or Architecture professor to help you through the errors within. The book is full of errors of continuity, strange/bad math, and inconsistency. The errors are so numerous, that it makes you wonder if you can trust any of the formulas to be accurate. For example: a sample problem in beam design gives the formula to use (from a table), defines the variables, gives the values for the known variables; and then in the problem-solving steps, uses different values for the known variables than what was listed in the preceding "Given" section! Furthermore, the answer arrived at cannot be made by the equation provided! There are also errors where a formula is listed in tables and that formula is referred to later and used for a problem, but the formula is not exactly the same as the table; there is no explanation for the difference.
I recommend "Simplified Engineering for Architects and Builders" (Ambrose/Tierney), instead.

This is ASTRONOMICALLY THE BEST architectural structures book of all time!! This is the second book for a serious architecture student or architect to buy after Deplazes' foundation book. My structures education was so frustrating because it was not VISUAL. I longed for a book like this 20 years ago!! But better than I could have ever imagined, this book is intensely visual, almost no numbers, instead an encyclopedic catalogue of structural spanning options in a maniacally ordered logic, drawn with a sweet German version of Ching's style. Just skimming this book several times will aquaint you with the logic, the systems, the options, and the breathtaking possibilities this great book throws at your feet. "Take that", it says, "and go do something great!"

This is almost the only graphically illustrated book on structural principles for architect.
Most of the structure book concentrate on calculation which are more important to structural engineer than to architect. However, this book put emphasis on structural principals and structural typology. The author uses very clear drawn illustration + table + text to illustrate different structural types.
This is a helpful resources if readers are architects interesting in structural design. The book could be more complete if real building examples are illustrated together with the diagrams.

Straight-forward, center-right review.......2007-07-20
Roy C. Smith offers a readable, straight-forward, right-of-center review of the famous economist, Adam Smith. The book introduces Smith's thoughts in basic detail, and spends a great deal of time putting Smith in the context of the American revolution, which of course is when "The Wealth of Nations" was published, in 1776. At times the history seems to drown-out the thems of Adam Smith's contribution, but by the conclusion the author ties up his thesis that Adam Smith's thought had a pervasive and substantial impact on the Founding Fathers, and upon the way Americans have done busness since then. A good read for introductory or undergraduate readers. Author's focus remains on Smith and American context. Little mention of John Maynard Keynes is made, and no discusion of Marx or socialism as a competing alternative. This did not detract from book, as plenty of other books and articles speak to those subjects.

Description:
Following a period of privatization and restructuring, commercial banks in Central and Eastern Europe and, more recently, in the Balkans have expanded rapidly their lending to the private sector. This paper studies whether these developments are consistent with a process of convergence and structural financial deepening by estimating an ''equilibrium'' level of the bank-credit-to-GDP ratio. It concluded that while there is no clear evidence that the recent increases in bank credit ratios is inconsistent with financial deepening, policy-makers will have to evaluate carefully its implications for macroeconomic developments and financial stability.

This is a unique book, unique in the sense that it does not tell you how to work for McKinsey, PwC , Andsersen, Bain or BCG. Rather , it is focussed on the professional who has worked for 5-10 years in organizations, built up an expertise and would like to leverage that as an independant consultant, or would like to open up a small consulting firm.
Lucidly written, and brutally frank, this book covers every conceivable thing such a consultant might need to think over or act ! Sample this "Should you have a fax machine or e-mail address or both"..."how can you approach prospective clients?" to "how to write proposals" to "how much should you charge?"...this book covers them all...
So if you want to convert your expertise in a consulting career , and would like down to the earth, jargon-shorn advice, this book is meant for you !
