Book Description
Writing from inside the discipline of architecture, rather than from the more common extrapolations from the history of painting and philosophy, Alberto Pérez-Gómez and Louise Pelletier focus on the implications of the tool of perspective (and the hegemony of vision) for architectural representation. Their primary thesis is that tools of representation have a direct influence on the conceptual development of projects and generation of forms, and that there are alternatives to the reductive working methods of most contemporary practice.
The book examines textual evidence across a broad historical period, concentrating on the relationship between drawing and architectural space in the period from the seventh century to the twentieth century. The book discusses such issues as optical correction and the nature of architectural drawing in selected treatises, revealing the complexity and potential contradiction inherent in any linear history of representation. The authors' ultimate aim is to probe the possibilities of the constructed world--that is, architecture--as a poetic translation, rather than prosaic transcription, of its representations.

esoteric architectural representation.......2000-04-21
Perez-Gomez wrote a very important book, the research on thearchitectural representation, and its roots, is enlightning, anddisturbing, in the sense that he pushes us to rethink our reflexes of perceptions and representation of architecture.

Book Description
With these 20 quick-and-easy stenciling projects, crafters of any level can make their mark and add some spark to furniture and home accessories. The basics are simple, yet they produce beautiful and varied results. Dozens of detailed pictures and instructions lay out all the techniques along with special surface treatments, such as faux finishing and sponging. Traditionalists will love the wooden night stand, which features a classic sheaf-of-wheat pattern with a raised, embossed effect. Transform an ordinary store-brought frame using decoupage, and then stencil on a bee and butterfly design as a finishing touch. A simple floorcloth comes alive with a subtle but striking tone-on-tone stenciled pattern. Every attractive, contemporary project will suit today’s tastes. The author lives in Pokomoke City, MD.

Probably the best available, but limited........2006-07-03
This book on the prewar Zeiss Ikon cameras is better than the book on the postwar cameras. However, it does try to put too much on too few pages, so you end up with too little information about a lot of cameras.
THE source of information on pre-WWII Zeiss Ikon.......2004-07-12
There are many books on camera collecting, but only one, real source in English on pre-World War Two Zeiss Ikon cameras. This is it.
Written in a somewhat stilted academic style, this book is never the less filled with information on Zeiss cameras. The high-contrast illustrations are clear, but could have been larger and more detailed. Worse, there isn't any index! It is organized by date and so you have to know when the camera you are interested in was first produced in order to locate it's description. Clearly, the author meant this book to be read cover to cover and not to be used as a reference title to be consulted for a piece of information on one camera at a time.
Despite its flaws this is the best title on the subject in English. Recommended.
Book Description
Canada is one of the most beautiful, varied, and inspiring natural environments on earth. Few countries contain such topographical differences as the West Coast, the mountain regions, the prairies, the Arctic, the cityscapes close to the American border, and the eastern forests. The Canadian territory is the second largest in the world, and it borders on three oceans - its fourth border is with the United States, the most powerful economy in the world. This provides Canadians unique access to a large market, but also raises many problems related not only to political and cultural influence, but to transborder pollution.
This book investigates the complexities of Canadian environmental policy. The text is split into three sections: the political context in which decisions are made; issue areas in need of engagement; and perspectives on the achievement of sustainable development, which colour the Canadian conceptual landscape.
The first section outlines the state of the Canadian environment, the actors and institutions involved in environmental policy formation (and a detailed history of Environment Canada), and the international context of modern decision-making. The second section is issue-specific, including chapters on environmental law, risk management and environmental impact assessment, international treaties and conventions involving Canada, and an overall assessment of Canadian policy. The final section deals with values and theories, from gender issues to environmental ethics. The book serves as a comprehensive introduction that makes explicit recognition of the transnational character of environmental policy formation in the era of globalization, and offers critical insights into the decision-making process.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent, succinct.......2007-07-26
This little book is a great read. It makes a series of important points very succinctly (essentially one point on every double page spread) about how to capture the elusive `drama' in a photograph. The example photographs are very, very well chosen to illustrate the points. The explanations are well-written and clear. I made copious notes while reading the book and I refer to these notes before I go out on a shoot.
Will improve your creativity.......2006-07-07
This book is great for developing creativity in nature photography. The author isolates and illustrates different concepts of a photograph, such as perspective, color, light, etc. When focusing on these concepts while composing a shot, one can learn how to make the pictures dramatic like those of the pros. Zuckerman really makes the complicated concept of a "dramatic" photograph simple by breaking up the concepts to look for in a shot. great picrues too!
very cool book.......2002-05-16
As with most of Jim Zuckerman's books, this one was incredibly informative. The 12 chapters cover the areas in photography that are the most helpful in getting the best shots of nature and the outdoors.
From perspective to motion to exposure to self-critique, Jim's knowledge of photography is second to none. I know of no one out there shooting who understands the mechanics of this medium more than him. And it shows in his photography, which is simply amazing.
This is a must buy for any one serious about seeing and capturing nature better in their photographs.
Excellent Teaching Guide.......2002-05-10
I purchased this book and I have used many of the artistic techniques and ideas to improve my nature photography. I would advise any one who is serious in nature photography to use the ideas Jim outlined in this book. I can't see how anyone who actually studies this book to not be satisfied with the content. I also have looked at a lot of this authors work and I think he is one of the best nature photographers in the business. His work is outstanding.
An Exercise in Frustration.......2001-10-02
In his introduction to "Capturing Dramaý" Jim Zuckerman says that "translating nature's drama to film requires a three step processý.locate the subjectý.previsualize an artful interpretationý.the technical aspects come into play." If Zuckerman had organized his book by his three-step procedure this might have been an interesting and useful book with a new slant on nature photography.
Instead, he picked twelve concepts around which to organize his work, such as form, perspective and exposure. Under each of these headings he shows several of his pictures with a brief statement. The pictures and the statement often do not relate to his chosen concept. They rarely relate to his three-step process. Often he omits really significant information that should be covered. For example, in his chapter on perspective he does not point out that using different focal length lenses, with different angles of vision, while keeping the image the same size, will change the amount of background included in a shot.
Sometimes he is just plain wrong. In several places he suggests that if he had used a different focal length lens for a subject, changed his distance but kept the exposure and image size the same, he would have gotten a different depth of field. It's an optical fact that if the image size and exposure are the same with different focal length lenses, the depth of field around the image will still be the same.
I also can't walk away from the publication itself. The book was printed on a semi-coated stock rather than the usual coated stock of photography books. The color gamut of such paper is less than coated stock and many vibrant colors appear slightly toned down. Too bad. Some of Zuckerman's photos are good.
In summery this book is a collection of random tips rather than an organized approach to the subject. And I was frustrated.
Book Description
“Ann Holmes has created the perfect guide to help women turn their dreams into a reality.”
–Donna Mullen Good, CEO of the Center for Women & Enterprise
If you’ve ever dreamed of starting your own business, or if you’ve ever wondered about how to build up the business you already run, but worry because you don’t have an MBA or a couple of years of college business courses, this book is for you. Based on extensive interviews with more than eighty women entrepreneurs from around the country, There’s a Business in Every Woman offers inspiring success stories (and instructive missteps) in a wide range of businesses–from catering, landscaping, personal training, and wedding and events planning to interior and clothing design, staffing, manufacturing, and product design.
What the trailblazing women in this book have in common is a good idea and the courage to turn a dream into a money-making reality through hard work, passion, and drive. Take, for instance, the woman who started an IT consulting company in her basement and now has more than a thousand employees in three states; two jogging buddies who commiserated about their uncomfortable bras and went on to design and produce a jog bra, creating a company that Playtex ultimately bought for millions; the mom whose hand-made birthday-party invitations made such a splash that she launched her own custom party invitation company, which she expanded to include holiday cards, gift tags, bags, and more; the sixty-five-year-old corporate wife and mother who applied her domestic talents to opening a profitable B&B; the twenty-three-year-old who bought a fledging real estate franchise and now earns a healthy six figures annually.
These success stories highlight the practical: focusing on what you’re good at; setting up your business properly–even if you are starting out from your basement or garage; getting financial backing when you need it; marketing your products with sizzle; networking like the “good old boys”; understanding how and when to diversify your products or services; managing your growth; and, most important, knowing what your company is worth and when it might be lucrative to cash out.
An accessible crash course in starting and running your own business, There’s a Business in Every Woman will teach you everything you need to know to turn your pipedream into serious profits.
Customer Reviews:
If you want to start your own business, read this book.......2007-05-04
This book is great for anyone who is in business or wants to start a business. Ann Holmes knows her subject. She has successfully started, run and sold multiple businesses. Although directed toward women, anyone going into business can benefit.
Ann writes with the wisdom of a mother who knows how to coach her children from birth to graduation, one step at a time. She assumes the reader is starting at the beginning and must acquire the business language, know-how, and understanding needed to operate a successful company.
True to her subtitle, the book provides a concise 7-step guide to discovering, starting and building the business of your dreams. It comes complete with a checklist for each step, real life examples, and plenty of resources. Ann openly shares her own experiences of having to make tough decisions to get her business through difficult times. Beside the checklists there are "Success" stories and "Regrets" stories to help you recognize the value of each step and what the consequences could be if you do not organize a business in a systematic way.
In the second part of her book, putting the seven steps into practice, Ann continues to provide real-life examples so the reader will comes away with a total concept that the business owner's role is to be the captain who charts the course for the business and uses the wisdom of the 7-step guide to navigate the business to a successful outcome including selling the business if that is your goal.
The only thing left for the reader is to have the brilliant business idea, follow the 7-step guide, and make the decisions that let your business flourish.
Armchair Interviews says: With so many women starting businesses, anything that helps them be successful is important to read.
A ra-ra book for women who want to think about starting their own small business........2007-04-12
I enjoyed this book. I think any woman who collects a W-2 and wants to become self-employed would do themselves a favor to read this book as they plan to make the transition. As I turned the pages to this book I felt as though I was reading a re-write of Ginny Wilmerding's book that came out last year entitled Smart Women and Small Business (ISBN: 0471778680). See my review for that book.
This book is broken into 10 chapters as follows:
1. How Do You Know if There's a Business in You?
2. Choose and Focus on Your Core Competencies
3. Build Your Company's Infrastructure
4. Keep Good Financials
5. Market Your Products
6. Diversify
7. Plan and Manage Growth
8. Understand Valuation and Organize an Exit Plan
9. Put Your Company into Play
10. Done Deals: Sold Companies and IPOs
It claims to include a 7-step guide to discovering, starting, and building the business of your dreams. I found the "guide" to include some wonderful information, but I did not find it to flow logically from one step to the next. At page 30 of the book in Figure 2 the 7-steps are diagrammed. I'm not going to point out all the diagram's flaws, but I will say I think it would have been much better if it had been written as the following "7 steps." See
1. Learn the ropes of your business BEFORE you start it (have a skill set)
2. Prepare a business plan
3. Start the business
4. Market the business & keep good financial records
5. Grow & Diversify
6. Systematize the business
7. Sell the business (exit & move on)
The author says at page 5 of the book that she wrote it for women entrepreneurs to help them navigate the steps to business success. As long as you keep in mind the above 7 steps I have written here you can read the book and the author will accomplish what she set out to do by writing the book. There is lots of great content in this book. My favorite part was Chapters 9 & 10 that describes the process of preparing to sell your company and cash out. I would have liked the book better if the topic of venture capital had been left out. It did not seem appropriate for the target audience of this book.
I particularly liked the reference made to SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) at page 35. I'm a SCORE volunteer, and the fact that I am is probably why I am reviewing this book. It's worth a read. 4 stars!

Aspiring Salon & Spa Owner.......2002-09-03
I purchased and read this book three years ago when I was a college student. I read it and honesty have to say didn't put much thought into the valuable information and advice until I entered the "Real World" aka life after college. Since working in Corporate America for the last 2 1/2 years I realize I will never be paid my worth unless I go into business for myself.
This book will lay the foundation for women that are serious about taking control of their financial destiny and life. This is a must read for women serious about success.
Fantastic for all black women.......2001-10-24
I am a Black Australian woman and I found this book applicable to my situation. The information crosses all boundries and the advice useful in many situations.
Believe and Succeed.......2001-04-02
At last a book to inspire and encourage black women to attain greatness. Both my self esteem and belief in my own abilities grew and grew as I read this book. It not only provides a guide to starting your own business, it also makes you believ you can succeed just like our mother and grandmothers, only we didn't see their efforts as entrepreneurial. I appreciate the history of the women of my family more and inspired by the book are working at becoming a part of that history by establishing my own business. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I feel Like a winner!.......2007-01-09
Well, I must say I have had my book for about 1 year and I was praying and asking God for something more. He answered me, I picked up Sister CEO and it was there the whole time. This book inspired me to walk in and take the company to new levels it helped to change my way of thinking, especially the testimonies that I can relate to that makes you feel good about the growing pains. Since reading the book I have a new attitude, I hold my head up, and I am more ready than ever to go to new height's. Thanks Cheryl you are reaching and helping CEO's like me who really needed the confirmation and inspiration.
Excellent presentation and helpful tips........1998-05-07
I found Sister Ceo to be motivational and enlightening. It addressed all of my fears about trying to establish my own business. Furthermore, it helped me to see that my fears are or have been the fears of many aspiring business women of color. I would like to see a sistehood of sister ceo's develop. This sisterhood would be like a sorority.
Highly recommended to ALL women!.......1998-03-02
Sister CEO is very motivating, realistic, and I highly recommend it.
Broussard is obviously a go-getter and would be an asset in anyone's circle.
Her book would be very useful to ANY women who aspires entreprenuerialship.
Only one view in her book I did not agree with, and that was on the subject of financing your business. My interpretation was to borrow, beg, or take money out of your house, to do whatever was legally necessary to finance your business -just get started-. Understood if you're single, but if you are married this finanical decision should be agreed upon between BOTH partners.
Other than that, a Job Well Done, Broussard!
