Book Description
An extraordinary work, unparalleled in its breadth and depth of detail, this three-volume set offers the first comprehensive history of architecture and town planning throughout colonial North America, from Russian Alaska to French Quebec, to Spanish Florida and California, to British, Dutch, and other settlements on the East Coast. Across this vast terrain, James Kornwolf conjures the outlines of the constructed environment as it emerged in settlements and communities, in structures and sites, and in the flourishes and idiosyncrasies of the families and individuals who erected and inhabited colonial buildings and towns. Here as never before readers can observe the impulses and principles of colonial design and planning as they are implemented in the buildings and streets, harbors and squares, gardens and landscapes of the New World.
Incorporating more than 3,000 illustrations, Kornwolf's massive work conveys the full range of the colonial encounter with the continent's geography, from the high forms of architecture through formal landscape design and town planning. From these pages emerge the fine arts of environmental design, an understanding of the political and economic events that helped to determine settlement in North America, an appreciation of the various architectural and landscape forms that the settlers created, and an awareness of the diversity of the continent's geography and its peoples. Considering the humblest buildings along with the mansions of the wealthy and powerful, public buildings, forts, and churches, Kornwolf captures the true dynamism and diversity of colonial communities -- their rivalries and frictions, their outlooks and attitudes -- as they extended their hold on the land. His work conveys for the first time the full scale, from intimate to grand, of their enduring transformation of the natural landscape of North America.

Architecture and Town Planning in Colonial North America.......2003-08-08
I had great expectations for this work in as much as a three volume publication is a very ambitious project that would innitially indicate a lot of intense research and knowledge of the subject. This may be the case as it pertains to certain cities, but Dr. Kornworth would have been better off to leave other towns out of the discussion on purpose rather to write incorrectly with misleading conclusions supported by misleading data/pictures that will have to be corrected. Such is the case as it concerns Pensacola, Florida, pages 98-101. The inadequate research and writing, along with the misleading conclusions, unfortunately made we question his overall research methods and analytical capabilities as it pertained to the rest of the volumes. Dr. Kornworth should have done better homework or at least had a knowledgeble historian review his brief chapter as to its accuracy. It is unfortunate for 5 paragraphs to taint a 3-volume work, but sloppy research can never be excused especially under the auspices of the John Hopkins University Press.

Known for her vibrant use of color and her bubbly enthusiasm, rubber stamp authority Dee Gruenig brings her unmistakable style to another eye-catching volume. This time the emphasis is on stationery items and other paper goods: cards, envelopes, address labels, gift-wrap and packaging, journal covers, calendars, and bookmarks, although she has included a number of other items such as aprons, ornaments, a necklace, and mouse pads. Rather than simply inking stamps with a single color off an ink pad, Gruenig loves to play, combining multiple colors with markers, brayers, and sponges, and often creating backgrounds as eye-popping as the images themselves. Many of her projects incorporate the photo frame idea, utilizing an open or border design inside of which can be placed a photo, a written greeting, or even clear cellophane to make a little gift package. Subtler crafters may be put off by her Technicolor palette, but her vivid imagination and excellent directions should have wide appeal. --Amy Handy
Book Description
A picture's worth a thousand words--but a picture on a page colorfully decorated by the latest in rubber stamps is worth a million! Stamps make it so easy to add frames, imaginative details, and clever motifs. They'll turn a plain piece of paper into a personalized calendar or transform thin slats of balsa into attractive "wooden postcards." Have lots of pictures to frame? Make it a triple play with a triple window-frame card. One suggestion: place your pictures inside three portholes, and then continue the ocean theme with stamped fish and sponged-on "water." You'll cherish these brilliant ideas and use them again and again!

Disappointed.......2001-11-01
I have bought 3 Dee Gruenig's books and each one of them seems similar - the tips are somewhat the same, the pics similar in style, the techniques used similar (kind of a repeat in all her books...which makes me really disappointed that I paid for the book. I was hoping that there would be something new and different the author would put forth in this book but it has proven otherwise. I do suggest anybody who has bought one or more of Dee's books to think twice before buying this one. It will just be another "duplicate" sitting on your shelf collecting dust. After this, I don't think I will ever buy her books again. Sheer waste of money...It's a wonder how the author can go all out to publish a new book with no apparent new ideas.
Dee Gruenig's Rubber Stamp Treasury.......2000-07-09
I am fairly new to rubber stamping and this book is an excellent source of information. Everything is explained step by step so you can't go wrong. There are so many projects to try that you will never be bored. You will be stamping out greeting cards, picture frames, invitations, wrapping paper and much, much more! This book makes rubber stamping a fun project for ALL ages.I enjoyed it very much and would recommend it to anyone interested in rubber stamping.Beginners and also experienced stampers will have a lot of fun with this book.

Focusing on a particular kind of 3-D modeling genre is a worthy effort, and in Creating Weaponry and Accessories in 3D, the author attempts to teach the technique of modeling handheld weapons, while at the same time teaching some historical fact. There are times, though, when the accuracy of the writing is in question, and the author's choices of weapons as examples are often too simplistic for any 3-D artist beyond a moderate skill level. The "finished model" often looks like the low-polygon models seen in older video games, without the highly detailed texturing.
The author has broken down the categories of weapons chronologically over six chapters, starting with "Archaic and Prehistoric Weaponry Design" through "Greek and Roman Weaponry Design" to "The Old West." Each chapter is filled with numerous examples, although few are detailed enough to learn from.
Appendix C, "Reference Materials," is a comprehensive bibliography listing over 25 books covering the history and development of weapons through the ages. For the serious weapons designer, this is a worthy list; most of these books feature historical data and photos of real weapons.
Written for the younger, beginning 3-D artist, Creating Weaponry and Accessories in 3D offers some insight into the history and modeling of handheld weapons, but it should be noted that more serious users will quickly outgrow the information presented here. --Mike Caputo
Book Description
This book targets a diverse audience with compelling material that cannot be found anywhere else. Inside, noted 3D authority R. Shamms Mortier applies his knowledge and expertise to the topic of weaponry-specifically, the 3D weaponry that is such an integral part of big-screen animation, the Web, computer games, and other CD content.

It is also historically accurate, and thus sure to appeal to weapons enthusiasts with an interest in how weapons are designed and represented in various venues. The accompanying CD provides many 3D models that readers can take apart or modify for their own uses, and eight color plates provide examples of the author's own work.

Customer Reviews:
Is this book a joke?.......2006-12-26
A waste of money, a waste of time reading it, an appalling waste of trees cut down for the paper.
This author has no idea how to create anything in 3-D applications. The software used to make these 'models' (and I use the word loosely here) are high-end, professional software. His techniques are sub-standard at best, mostly downright sub-amateur. If anyone actually used the techniques used in this book, they would be laughed out of their design-studios and sacked immediately.
Terrible book - the best place for it is in the trash can.
minus 10000000000000000 stars.......2001-08-21
The book is so bad don't bother. The publisher and the author should be ashamed of themselves. No joke this is one of if not thee worst 3d book ever. this Guy Samms is really clueless and as go through the book you relaize he is just pulling info out of his... and doesn't check if it is even right. I strongly recommand you pass this book up in fact any book written by this... and watch out for this publisher as well, cause if the let this pass through the cracks they just don't care.STINKY!
Disappointed.......2001-08-21
Hmmm - there isn't much about this book I'd be able to recommend. I'm a professional 3D artist and this book is a joke. The techniques given are so simplistic, that they are laughable. The accuracy of the information is very poor and the methods shown are often the worst possible way to create 3D objects efficently. The historical accuracy is is questionable, as is the general information. "Hey Shamms, porcupines can't throw their quills (pg.26)... check ANY book on mammals!"
Save your money. Morgan Kaufmann has a reputation for publishing good books, but this one definitely lowers their curve.

The aim of this thesis is to show the reasons and causes of the S&Ls crisis during the decade of the 80's. It had been various individual facts, factors and also their interaction and mutual influence, that played a role in making the crisis. A comparison between S&Ls and German Mortgage Banks in the aspects mortgage types, project financing and capital requirements shows that it had been the prevailing circumstances of the S&Ls branch, which favoured the emergence and course of the S&Ls crisis. With the Principal-Agent Theory cooperative designs can be used for the mutual cooperation of S&Ls and their supervisory agencies and risk reduction within the sector.

Book Description
The anthracite region of northeastern Pennsylvania, five hundred square miles of rugged hills stretching between Tower City and Carbondale, harbored coal deposits that once heated virtually all the homes and businesses in Eastern cities. At its peak during World War I, the coal industry here employed 170,000 miners, and supported almost 1,000,000 people. Today, with coal workers numbering 1,500, only 5,000 people depend on the industry for their livelihood. Between these two points in time lies a story of industrial decline, of working people facing incremental and cataclysmic changes in their world. When the Mines Closed tells this story in the words of men and women who experienced these dramatic changes and in more than eighty photographs of these individuals, their families, and the larger community.
Award-winning historian Thomas Dublin interviewed a cross-section of residents and migrants from the region, who gave their own accounts of their work and family lives before and after the mines closed. Most of the narrators, six men and seven women, came of age during the Great Depression and entered area mines or, in the case of the women, garment factories, in their teens. They describe the difficult choices they faced, and the long-standing ethnic, working-class values and traditions they drew upon, when after World War II the mines began to shut down. Some left the region, others commuted to work at a distance, still others struggled to find employment locally.
The photographs taken by George Harvan, a lifelong resident of the area and the son of a Slovak-born coal miner, document residents' lives over the course of fifty years. Dublin's introductory essay offers a brief history of anthracite mining and the region and establishes a broader interpretive framework for the narratives and photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Accurate View of Life in the Coal Regions.......2000-02-08
Most of us don't have books written about the neighborhoods and local institutions that we grew up with. This is particularly so for places off the beaten path like the Pennsylvania coal regions. I grew up in the 50's and early 60's just a few miles from the coal towns that form the geography of Mr. Dublin's book and went to some of the same schools as his narrator's children. My family worked for the coal companies and the garment factories at various times. These stories ring true from my experience - the reliance on family, the acceptance of 50 mile commutes to work rather than leave the area, the accurate concern that everyone for miles around knows your family business. The real value of this book for me is that these narratives show the commonality of experiences that I thought were unique. And, it also fills in many gaps about the social forces at work that I didn't realize existed in the lives of that generation. They shielded us from the dangereous aspects of some jobs, the lack of job security, labor-management tensions, and the potential need to migrate to make a living. For those readers without the personal ties to the coal regions this book provides a view of how tough the "golden years" of the 50's were for some Americans.
Colorful reflections from the dark world of coal.......1999-09-08
The beauty of this book lies in the fact that it does not attempt to analyze or comment upon. It simply presents the stories of ordinary men and women of this century in more or less their own words. All their lives in some way revolved around the dark world of Pennsylvania coal mining in the anthracite area of the Panther Valley. They are all refreshingly human, wonderfully straightforward, and tell deeply moving stories. Each in his or her own way reflects the rich cultural and ethical traditions brought here from European shores. The beauty of the book is its utter simplicity in approaching the mystery of the human personality against the backdrop of the drudgery of labor. It's a wonderful slice of life.
