Lake Forest, Illinois, thirty miles north of Chicago on the western shore of Lake Michigan, has been one of America's elite residential communities for one and a half centuries. Spread across the edge of lakeside bluffs and along deep ravines, hundreds of elegant country estates house the families of Chicago's commercial, professional, and cultural leadershipthe greatest concentration of American country estates to be found between the two coasts. Lake Forest architecture and landscaping reflect a significant interplay of leading practitioners and design theories spanning the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This book offers a tour of the houses, landscapes, gardens, gentlemen's farms, and country clubs that have made the community a landmark of architectural and landscape design. Architectural renderings, landscape plans, drawings, and period photographs of architecture and gardens, many of them not previously published, illustrate the work of these masters and the fabulous lifestyles of a bygone era. 290 illustrations, 16 pages of color.

Queen of the North Shore.......2005-01-15
This is a good book, well put together book on a fabled Chicago suburb. I would have liked to have seen more pictures and better quality in the photos. The research is top notch and I enjoyed reading the text, but I expected more and for some reason that I can't quite put my finger on I was a bit disappointed. I usually go back to my books over and over again to paruse the pictures and scan the text, but I have not found myself doing that with this book and I don't know exactly why, because I normally love these kinds of books. Anyway, it is a fine book and maybe it's just me.

Book Description
Anna Pigeon has fled New York and her memories to find work as a ranger in the country’s national parks. In the remote backcountry of West Texas, however, she discovers murder and violence. Fellow park ranger Sheila Drury is mysteriously killed, presumably by a mountain lion. But the deep claw marks Anna finds across Drury’s throat and the paw prints surrounding the body are too perfect to be real. This is the first time Track of the Cat is available on audio.

Murder in the Back Country.......2007-08-03
When the National Park Service puts a bounty on a killer mountain lion, it rubs National Park Ranger Anna Pigeon's fur the wrong way. It's a knee jerk reaction from the Park's leadership: Mountain Lion Attack! Kill the animal first, ask questions later. Or maybe no questions need to be asked at all. Something stinks at the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, and it's not just the brutal death of a fellow park ranger whose half eaten dead body was found by Anna in the back country. It's the naturalist vs. the politicians. The Park Service, neighboring cattle ranchers and developers all want the mountain lion disposed of. It seems Anna, suspicious of things that are a little too neat, is the only one taking the animal's side.
This is Nevada Barr's kick off novel, and a good one it is. Anna Pigeon, park ranger, is the hero. Unlike most, Anna is a law enforcement ranger. She didn't think there would be much law enforcement to do in this remote park in West Texas. Most enforcement types are stationed in parks close to urban areas where most crime takes place. Anna chose the law enforcement route because the Protective Division does not only the serious cop stuff, but Search and Rescue, where the real action is. When a mountain lion kills a human, it is not a crime, but when the humans make it look like it was done by an animal, yes, no matter if it is in the bedroom or on a city street or the back country, that is murder.
Because of the excellence of the writing, the natural world as a backdrop, and the character of Anna Pigeon, I've read several of Barr's books and have enjoyed them all.
What a start!.......2007-07-15
Nevada Barr begins her series of Anna Pigeon mysteries with this intriguing story set in Guadeloupe Mountains National Park (Texas). Having read A Superior Death first (the second novel in this series) and then Endangered Species and Deep South before going back to read the series in consecutive order of publication, I was wondering how I'd see Anna in Book No. 1. She's not an altogether sympathetic main character, but she grows on you. The intricacies of the plots in the novels seem to grow, but even that in "Track" is full of detail and enticement. For those who are "detailed" people, I'm sure they will find these mysteries alluring. I look forward to reading all 13 of the mysteries.
Another Winner.......2007-06-29
Nevada Barr tells a good tale with interesting characters and setting. I highly recommend her books.
Track of the Cat.......2007-05-15
Good beginning to the Anna Pigeon series. A couple of murders, mysterious only to Anna, but intriguing in their setting: the Guadeloupe Mountains in western Texas. Well written, not heavy, entertaining.
track of the cat.......2005-12-05
The starting of this book is very slow, then it turns into a book you can't put down. The main character in the book is Anna Pigeon, who is a park ranger in West Texas. She is hiking down in the walls of McKiirick Canyon and she find another park ranger dead. The ranger had cat scratches on her. Everone thinks a cat killed her but Anna just can't believe that a cat in West Texas would kill and not eat its prey. Anna start investigating on her own. She uncovers other clues. As she does many other deaths occur. The end of this story is a big surprise. Read it, it's very intertaining.

Book Description
Since he was a youngster, W. C. Jameson has hiked, explored, and been captivated by the Guadalupe Mountains of west Texas and southeast New Mexico, just southwest of Carlsbad. He has searched the caves in the mountains (even finding a few gold nuggets tucked away years earlier by an unknown prospector) and visited with longtime residents in the local cafés and taverns, and on their ranches. He spent hours listening to them share historical events of the Guadalupes as well as the legends.
Sometimes the people of the mountains talked about buried treasures and other times they spoke of ghosts and spirits that many believed resided in the dark interior of the range. They shared personal experiences and exchanged stories of strange things encountered high in the mountains and tales of unexplainable happenings.
There are countless stories associated with the Guadalupe Mountains. Many are factual, having been historically documented. Others are part of the legend and lore. A few are bizarre. W. C. Jameson includes numerous tales and stories here for the armchair traveler or the travel planner.
These tales of the mountains, mines, and characters of the Guadalupe range were collected over many years by the author who has explored the area since he was a boy.

Interesting and Quick Read.......2007-07-22
If you love the mystery that surrounds the southwest, then you will love this book. The Guadalupe mountains have always had a mystic about them. W.C. Jameson has interviewed people that have lived close to the Guadalupes and has retold their stories. He mentions the Apache Indians and these mountains were their last refuge before being sent to the reservation. He tells of strange things that have happened to hikers. After reading this book, you will want to explore the Guadalupe mountains.
Book Description
As the first and only comprehensive hiking guide to all 130 miles of trails in these two national parks, this book features Carlsbad's improved above-ground hiking trail system as well as routes in the caverns and Guadalupe's wild backcountry. It also includes written trail descriptions, elevation charts, photos, and detailed topographic maps. Hiking Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National Park is packed with all the information you need to plan your next trip in these two uncrowded and remote national parks.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2005-09-12
The descriptions of trails and how to get to them will be an asset to those hiking in these amazing parks.
best available resource.......2005-03-15
Those of us who are old enough to remember the time before hiking guides were written for smaller parks and wild areas and before the internet know what it was like: you went the first time to find out what you could do there and then you went again to do it. OK for places nearby but what about those trips across the continent? This book gave me everything I needed to get the most out of my brief week in the Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad Caverns National Parks, places I rather suspect I'll never get to again.
The author covers all the maintained trails (and some that aren't, really) that I've heard of, with fairly good detail and guidance as to difficulty. He is clearly a champion hiker himself but no need to fear that you'll be dragged along by hiker machismo: he over-, rather than underrates the difficulty of these trails. But he also gives you all the information you'll need to go bounding out on your own over-demanding marches. For example, I took his day hike out of Dog Canyon up to Lost Peak, then continued along the McKittrick Ridge Trail out to the "snout", just before the plunge down to McKittrick Canyon. Not something he recommended, but I had all the data I needed to make my own decision.
The maps are photocopies of the National Geographic maps of these parks, available at their website for about 10 bucks as well as the visitor centers in Carlsbad Caverns & Guadalupe Mountains NP's. Aesthetically, they are perhaps a bit lacking but I found them perfectly readable for the purpose of trail use. You might want to supplement them for bushwhacking, though.
I used this book in October of 2004 and found no pressing need for revision, though of course I didn't hike all the trails, just a lot of them.
I mentioned the Internet at the outset. This wonderful area does not excite the interest, as measured by internet postings, that such places as the Grand Canyon do. There is a Yahoo group, but there is just not much activity on it. So this book appears to be the only substantial resource out there.
Great trip planning resource.......2002-09-02
Once of the few places I've found information on the above ground options at Carlsbad.
It's given me many alternatives to the Guadelupe Peak, McKittrick Canyon, caves trip I was planning. There seems to be much more to be explored.
Maps and photos are a bit unclear - could use some work
Great resource for trip planning.......1997-07-29
This book has just the right amount of information about each park, the trails, key features, preparation checklists, and suggestions. I'm planning a trip to Guadalupe and this book is an invaluable resource, since I've never been to the park, and information about the area is hard-to-find and somewhat limited. I particularly liked the trail stats that accompanied each trail description - the stats include distance, elevation change, time estimates, and key points. Also, many mini-maps are provided which help to illustrate the topic

Customer Reviews:
Excellent introduction to a lesser known national park.......2007-02-02
Writer Alan Tennant succintly describes the striking geology of the nearly all-limestone Guadalupe Reef and the post Ice-Age remant forest that perches on its summit and in some canyon recesses. However, even more interesting, to this reader, is his account of the human history of the Guadalupe Mountains, from the collision between the Apaches and the Latin or Anglo invaders to the rather improbable concatenation of events that led to the protection of the place as a national park, in a region that tends to be hostile to public ownership of land and environmental protection.
The book only follows the story up to the first couple of years after the opening of the Park, but, other than some water-mining in the vicinity that poses an indirect threat, not much has changed since then.
Michael Allender's photographs are still the best visible representation of the Park available, even in this day of internet picture-posting. In fact, Tennant weaves the figure of the non-conformist Allender into the account in a way that adds a strong dramatic and personal value to the book, without making it over-literary in a way that might weigh on some readers.

Excellent overview, a little dated........2000-06-17
Surveys the different kinds of Internet-based money exchange systems available at the time of book writing. Also includes some interesting interviews and monetary history. Even though the situation has changed since the book was written, it still is worth reading for basic knowledge of the area.
