A Superior Text.......2000-05-19
This exceptional college level text applies economic theory to every aspect of the healthcare field. The authors' profound and insightful conclusions are drawn from real world examples that allow physicians, healthcare consultants, HMO managers, government officials and yes, interested students, to comprehend the implications of healthcare issues from an organizational and governmental perspective. Additionally, the authors' conclusions are applicable when analyzing the American macro economy in which 14% of GDP originates in the healthcare field. A more astute microeconomics text does not exist!
Absolutely and Unequivocally!.......2000-04-28
After several years of business school, I can sincerely attest to the usefulness of this text. By concisely analyzing and interpreting the challenging material, Santerre and Neun transform Health Economics into a universally interpretable language. Importantly, the plethora of insights and empirical studies enhance each chapter. Also, this powerful text negates the need for course enhancing supplementary readings. This is one of very few texts that is worth its weight in gold!

Product Description
Alan Frew knows that truth lies within each bite of THE ACTION SANDWICH and that THE ACTION SANDWICH lives in the space between lifes questions and answers. This is not a book of group-hugs or high-fives, nor will it win awards from the Moral Majority any time soon. That's not where it comes from. Alan writes with no apology, of the raw reality and hardcore nature of life on the streets managing to parlay that into undeniable proof that abundance is for everyone, even for a cheeky wee bugger from Coatbridge.
Customer Reviews:
This "sandwich" needs a little salt.......2007-10-08
This is another addition to the countless motivational books already on the market. The only difference between this one and all the others are the witty life stories thrown in among the somewhat stirring jargon.
As a "jack of all trades and master of none", Glass Tiger's front man Alan Frew hangs up his guitar and dons his author hat for "The Action Sandwich". Once you get beyond the poor formatting, continuous use of capital words, various grammatical and spelling errors which were obviously overlooked by the "editor", this has the hopes of being an interesting read.
The book begins with a rather drawn-out Table of Contents page. Each chapter has what seems to be a subchapter after it. Each subchapter bears the name of a song. This really clogs up the Table of Contents and makes the book seem longer than it really is.
Two items that stand out to me are the analogies Frew makes to life. In one he compares life to a "tour bus". In the other he refers to it as "the action sandwich". Maybe his life has been like a tour bus but for many others it has been a 747, an express train or a sailboat. And some of us need a little more substance in our lives than just a sandwich--even if it is an "action" one.
During a reminiscence of meeting and singing with Rod Stewart, Frew states "Who'd believe it?" and goes on to declare, "The Action Sandwich would!", referring to the action sandwich as a person.
Frew tells of meeting a woman, unhappy with her job and position in life, whom he unsuccessfully convinces to sit in on one of his seminars. Apparently she has higher ambitions for herself than being a chewing gum vendor.
Considering Frew's personal life, his biographical accounts make you realize that although many aspects may be true, many seem to be embellished. Even someone with a great memory cannot recall events verbatim.
As enjoyable as the stories are, Frew jumps from one subject to another without concluding the subject he began. One minute he's discussing opening for Culture Club and wearing a canary yellow suit and without further elaborating, he begins discussing drug use. You're left wondering what you missed.
A few emotional bits: Frew tells of his father hardly paying attention to him and how he was told he was a "mistake". Another being when his friend and manager Gary Pring passes away. For a moment I felt like I was reading a really great novel. Then back to reality...more missing commas, quotation marks and misspelled words. But that's not what "The Action Sandwich" is about.
No, "The Action Sandwich" is like any other rousing, motivational, believe-till-you-piss-out-your-ears book on the store shelves today. All the same elements are there: passion, intention, etc. They are just argued using the analogy of a "sandwich" instead of a "secret". By the way, Frew says in his press release that "there is no secret...there never has been". I'm not so convinced there's ever been an "action sandwich" either.
An added note:
I'm no editor, although I do proofread and edit as part of my profession. I've never read a book with so many errors in it such as this. Here are a few samples. There are too many to list them all and many of them are the same (such as missing commas, quotation marks or commas out of place). This book may have been "edited", but it was not "edited" very well.
I know Frew loves to write words in all capital to make a point but it's quite overused here and makes it tiresome to read.
Page 42 - in the first paragraph the name is spelled "Yunus" in the first sentence. In the third sentence it is spelled as "Yunas".
Names of record titles, movies, TV shows are italicized. Band names are not.
Page 74 - forgot to turn the italics off - The Beatles is italicized (which it shouldn't be) and the word after that is "and" and the letter "a" in "and" is italicized.
Page 114 - there are quotation marks before "Suddenly I stirred" but it's obvious this isn't dialogue.
Page 117 - 2nd to last paragraph, last sentence "...it was a somewhat like a martini..." - should be "it was like a martini"
and my favorite:
Page 211 - "passed". It should be "past". "We walked right past", not "We walked right passed".
If you must read the book, do what I did: read it, have a few laughs and return it to get your money back.
Product Description
The author forces history to shout its powerful lessons about our least understood ability - leadership. A pre-teen, a parent, or a corporate exec doesn't need to be trained for leadership because it's already alive and pumping in your DNA. The proof is all here.
Here's the bonus feauture: it uses history as a motivational tool. Instead of stats and facts,, you get more than 200 life-lessons from Gettysburg to help you succeed in any endeavor.
The author spent over 10 years writing thousands of radio and TV commercials under daily pressure to sell products and services quickly and convincingly. That same get-to-the-point style is brought to the writing of 88 short stories in this superbly written and open-to-any-page book.
Customer Reviews:
An interesting mix of stories and applications!.......2007-06-18
Leadership is a hard characteristic to measure and quantify, but no one disputes its importance and influence, whether in a military setting or in the business world, or even in families, churches, organizations, and schools. Good leaders are essential to provide goal setting, objectives, expectations of team members, decision making, strategy and pathways to achieve desired results, and modelling desired behavior and outcomes for their followers. Good leaders can often raise an average team or organization to greater results. By contrast, bad leaders can drag down the morale and performance of even good teams.
The Civil War Battle of Gettysburg provided hundreds of examples of both good, effective leaders and those individuals who failed to rise to the challenge of leadership. In this interesting little treatise, author Paul Lloyd Hemphill examines 80 different situations at Gettysburg where people exhibited strong leadership in various ways, often rising above their own skills, background, and experience and inspiring others to new heights. Hemphill matches common traits found in strong leaders with their Gettysburg counterparts, examining how these characteristics were exhibited by soldiers and civilians at Gettysburg and how they relate to common challenges leaders face today in all walks of life. The practical examples and useful insights offer the reader some thought-provoking material to chew on; information and skills that will challenge the reader to determine is he or she would exhibit the same traits when under challenge or adversity.
Hemphill's writing style is lucid and succinct, and the rapid fire, short-bursts of information, examples, and applications can be read in small doses to allow the reader to dwell on each story and find practical self-applications. The book can be read in daily journal format, with one or two stories at a time to challenge the reader to excel and emulate the example. Some of the stories and characters are quite well known (John Burns, Winfield Hancock, etc.), and others are common foot-soldiers or low ranking officers not familiar to many readers. However, their message and example shine through the years, offering opportunities for modern leaders to hone their skills.

Book Description
While Nevaer and Deck underscore the need for a rational and realistic agenda to confront adequately the gravity of the problems the government has created by incurring massive federal deficits, they assume that policymakers will continue to disregard the dangers these problems pose and that members of the business community must be able to overcome and work around the challenges they represent. The authors discuss the ramifications of a Deficit Economy and its effect upon the national economy and business. They offer concrete proposals for avoiding common pitfalls and for developing strategies in order to survive. Finally, they provide an explanation of the international implications of high real intrest rates, trade deficits, and capital inflows from abroad.
