3 out of 5 stars I'd Fall for him too!.......2005-08-07

Fall Fury is the continuation of two other books Jaci Burton has written - A Storm For All Seasons : Summer Heat ( chronicalling the elementally magical Storm family ) and Devlin Dynasty ( werewolves).

This time Max Devlin, werewolf of Boston, is in search of a mate. He knows exactly who he wants: Shannon Storm, fiery daughter of New Orleans's Storm family. And since he's been sent to help them with their P. R. campaign extolling their new casino its time to make his move. They'll be working together every day in the sultry southern heat and fall hasn't gotten chilly yet...

Shannon can't believe her family thinks she needs help with public relations and she doesn't want anything to do with the northerner they've brought in. And if her mother and sister don't shut up about her "destiny" soon she may just have to conjure a storm to do it for them. And why does a wolf suddenly show up in her neighborhood stalking her?!

For those who loved the previose novels the love scenes in this book are few but far more explicit ( if possible) than previousely. Seriousely, even if you've been a romance reader for years, you are still going to blush over this one! The story is also better, I thought, in this book than the others. I only wish Ms. Burton would finallly get around to chilly Logan's story!

5 out of 5 stars Fall Fury is Fantastic.......2005-03-19

Book 2 of the Devlin Dynasty series and Book 2 of the Storm For All Seasons series, this book successfully merges the two. Shannon Storm is an independent woman with a successful career within her family's New Orleans based business. Max Devlin is a PR hot shot working with Shannon on her family's latest business venture. Max isn't just in town for business but to establish himself in his recent move from Boston and to find a mate.

I loved this book! The sexual tension between Max and Shannon is intense. The plot creative! If you like your romance red-hot, pick up a copy of this book. I've loved every Jaci Burton novel and this one was no exception. Her imagination is fertile and her narrative well written. I highly recommend this author.

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner From Jaci Burton.......2005-03-18

Shannon Storm is not happy when her family brings in Max Devlin to handle PR for the new casino. As director of Public Relations for her family's hotel she believes that she is more than capable of handling it all by herself. But from the moment she meets Max in her family's conference room the chemistry between them is unmistakable. Max Devlin came to New Orleans to build a branch of his family there. He knew that one of his first steps would be to find a mate but he never expected to find her as soon as he arrived. Now that he has, he's got to figure out how to get Shannon to spend time with him and then he has to explain to her about just who and what he really is.

I've never read a Jaci Burton book that I didn't like and Fall Fury is no exception. One of Ellora's Cave most talented authors, Jaci Burton skillfully combines characters featured in two of her best series, Storm For Seasons and Devlin Dynasty, to give us a story that smolders with sensuality and emotion. Readers who have read Jaci's ebooks will feel compelled to add this print version to their library and new readers will not be disappointed with Fall Fury or any Jaci Burton book.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy the Fury thanks to Jaci Burton.......2005-03-17

Ms. Burton masterfully blends two of her series - Devlin Dynasty & Storm for All Seasons, into a tight story with magnificent characters.
Max and Shannon piqued my curiosity the first time I met both of them and was eager for their stories. I never imagined this author to bring them together with their own story, crossing series, but she did, and she did so fantastically.
Fall Fury is alive with tension, alpha characters - male & female who a reader can't help but enjoy their clashing -- or their hot passion! It's an adrenaline rush from start to finish and a paranormal romance not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Devil Dynasty: Fall Fury.......2005-03-17

Jaci Burton knows what women like to read. Her books are crisp, exciting and very well written. The Devlin Dynasty series is a personal favorite. Her Alpha males (want one in my Christmas stocking) are real - you can feel, taste and believe in them. The women are strong but all female. Perfect combination... Thank you for the wonderful hours you have given me reading your books. All the books in this series are HOT - HOT - HOT!!! Trust me you won't be dissapointed with this book.

    Book Description

By any measure, Lebbeus Woods is one of the most original architects working today. His body of theoretical work focuses on buildings of crisis, whether marred by major earthquakes, suffering the effects of economic embargo, or damaged by war. Since the destruction of the World Trade Center, his designs have taken on new meaning and significance. In The Storm and the Fall, Woods brings his visions to a new depth, moving them from feverishly rendered drawings to three-dimensional space.
The book focuses on two recent Woods installations - one at the Houghton Gallery at New York's Cooper Union, the other at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain, Paris - that address the role of today's architecture. The Storm critiques the geometric box that rules most building designs and proposes instead a dynamic field of potential energy, represented by a complex array of vectors. The Fall crystallizes a built space in the midst of collapse, witnessing a moment too brief to inhabit - except in imagination. Both pieces are explored in Woods's powerful sketches, renderings, models, and constructions, exposing the mutations that enable them to be. A postscript of his hopeful design for a new World Center relates even more of his ideas, and essays by Anthony Vidler and Paul Virilio offer insights into the significance of the work.

      Book Description

Sepoys, Siege & Storm - FEROZEPORE TO DELHI RIDGE AND THE BLOODY FIGHTING FOR THE CAPTURE OF THE CITY ITSELF The 61st Foot were stationed at Ferozepore when the sepoys of the East India Company's Army rose in mutiny in 1857. This book chronicles a young officer's experience of that dramatic day's violence and the dreadful vengeance that followed when men were blown from the mouths of cannon before his eyes. Next came the march to Delhi with its skirmishes and running battles. Griffith's story takes us then to the siege and the apalling conditions on Delhi Ridge before we finally join him in the bloody storm and chaotic street fighting which was the fall of Delhi. This is a directly recounted, vivid first hand account of the Mutiny from within a British regiment. Not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars the legendary Balanchine.......2003-09-21

Those of us who knew, worked for, or studied with George Balanchine, would call him "Mr. B.", with friendship and respect, and sometimes a mixture of awe and fear.
This marvelous collection of photographs captures the many moods of this incredibly complex man, and his intensity. He was the most influential choreographer of the 20th century, and his legacy is beyond measure.

The Foreword is written by Peter Martins, who took the leadership of the New York City Ballet when Balanchine passed this earthly plane in 1983 at the age of 79.
There is a wonderful photo of the two men on page 127; two profiles, one the aged master, the other, the youthful, handsome Dane, perfect danseur noble, who became Balanchine's lead male dancer during the '70s.
The twenty page Essay by Lincoln Kirstein I found to be totally confounding, written in a very convoluted style, and perhaps if one is a lot smarter than I am, it is understandable.
"Two Talks with George Balanchine", by Jonathan Cott however, is very interesting. Mr. Cott's intelligent, probing questions elicit some insightful answers.
"Three Sides of Agon" by Edwin Derby is a piece on the great ballet, which was a magnificent collaboration between Balanchine and Igor Stravinsky. As a piece of music, Agon is one of my favorite Stravinsky compositions, and the stark, extraordinary choreography made this a groundbreaking ballet.

There is a section that describes the photographs, and then the heart of the book, the fascinating collection of images.
The first one is from 1904, the year of his birth, with his wet nurse.
Other remarkable photos are: from 1924, dancing with his first wife Tamara Geva (who said he was a mix of poet and a general); 1929, dancing with Felia Doubrovska, who was a beloved teacher of mine, and she looks exquisite here; on page 68, a lovely study of Balanchine playing the piano. He was an excellent pianist until he lost part of a finger in a lawnmower accident; 1937, with his second wife, Vera Zorina; 1948, an exotic posed photo by Irving Penn for Vogue Magazine of Mr. B. with his third wife, Maria Tallchief, and also from '48, the George Platt Lynes (who chronicled Balanchine's life) photo of a Symphony in C rehearsal with Tanaquil LeClercq (wife # 4) and Francisco Moncion; 1963, in rehearsal for Movements for Piano and Orchestra with the beautiful Diana Adams, and the terrific Jacques d'Amboise, by Martha Swope, a noted dance photographer who made many contributions to this book, and did my favorite image, of Mr. B. with his cat Mourka.

Published in 1984, this small book of 154 pages has 76 black and white photos, good quality paper in a matte finish, and for some of us, many memories.

                                                Book Description

This 'goldmine of concepts for understanding business and industrial organization' was originally published in 1959 but has been an influence in business schools ever since. The author combines rigorous theory with close observation of the real business world, and writes simply but with an original approach. Her focus on teams and organizational knowledge underlines contemporary discussion of 'organizational competences' and she has written a new introduction which assesses the book's impact and describes the subsequent development of her own ideas.

The Theory of the Growth of the Firm is a classic book in management literature, and one that is explored by academics as well as business enthusiasts. With this book, Penrose founded what's known as the resource-based view. Essentially, she determined that there must be something inside the firm that drives its growth (i.e. success).

The author explores the reasons for such growth. Penrose moves away from the neoclassical economics model of the firm towards a definition of the firm as one that has administrative responsibilities (strategic planning or management) and a view of the firm as a collection of resources (human resources, technologies and other capabilities a firm has). She argues that choice of how those resources are put to use is central to a firms "entrepreneurial" activity.

Penrose goes on to say that change and growth of firms must be driven from inside the firm because the economy as a whole does not constrain firms. Managers, she says, know that they can alter their environment, and that the environment is not independent of their activities.

The resources that are available within firms are ever changing, of course, and often come together in bundles. This means that there are always some resources that are not being used, or being used inefficiently. Managers who realise this can develop those resources and grow their companies as a result. Thus, it is knowledge in combination with resources that drives growth. This is also what makes each firm unique: there are hundreds of ways to combine those resources, and each firm does it differently.

The book then talks about how growth takes place - sometimes as part of a diversification process or through an acquisition or merger. Penrose also discusses the role of time, and the difference between a small or a larger company growing. Growth, she concludes is possible for all firms - size does not necessarily mean that a firm is more efficient (which is the typical economic argument). The only thing that constrains growth, really, is the limited capacity we humans have for managing a lot of change at once.

The style of writing is conversational, if somewhat dated. The only slight drawback is that Penrose often returns to hammer on the same point. But that's not unusual for this type of book. The most astonishing aspect by far is that Edith Penrose was a woman, in a world of business and academia that then, and still now, consists largely of men.

I find myself springing to the defense of this book, because when I read it - right through - it was with a sense of appreciation for its acumen. Penrose's terminology is a little idiosyncratic but it does not take long for the reader to adjust. Moreover, when reading it with the circumstances of actual companies in mind, it presents a way to gain insight into their histories. One other way to express this is that my notes on this book are very detailed and lengthy. I didn't make these notes simply because the book is a "classic".

                                                5 out of 5 stars Ground-Breaking and Fascinating.......2001-07-15

This book helped provide the foundation for what has become known as the resource-based view of the firm (RBV). Back in 1959, when the male gender dominated the economics discipline, Ms. Penrose set out to answer this question: Was there "something inherent in the very nature of any firm that both promoted its growth and necessarily limited its RATE of growth."

I found this book so interesting and helpful (I am a business appraiser) that I read it twice. This led me into studying the resource-based view of the firm.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in the broad topics of business strategy and management. Related books that I recommend include "Contemporary Strategy Analysis," by Robert Grant; "Modern Competitive Analysis, by Sharon Oster; and "Why Firms Succeed," by John Kay.

                                                  Book Description

Much current literature on globalization and competition focuses on the external environment in which firms operate. Julian Birkinshaw's book looks within international firms at the dynamics that affect their growth and position. Are local managers seizing power from the centre? Is `glocialization' the inevitable result of globalization? Based on fresh case evidence gathered in Europe and North America, the findings in this book about multi-national firms and managers make a significant contribution to some of the key debates on the transfer of knowledge in firms; the resource-based view; and the network forms of organization. The initiatives of local managers reflect local knowledge, skills and resources and at the same time impact of the distribution of power in the wider organization. By taking as his perspective that of the subsidiary manager operating in a network, Julian Birkinshaw extends the implications of his findings to all managers in organizations and challenges those who still view organizations as hierarchies.

                                                  Book Description

The rapidly changing nature of the modern industrial world has helped spark a radical rethinking of the design of corporations, changes no less revolutionary than the wave of innovations associated with the names of Frederick Taylor and Henry Ford at the dawn of this century. In Redesigning the Firm, nineteen experts from one of the nation's premier business schools, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, take an informed look based on their own research at various aspects of this revolution, offering managers a host of insights and powerful tools for orchestrating change in their firm. Redesigning the Firm illuminates many of the challenges that confront the executive, approaching the issue from a wide variety of perspectives. The book considers, for instance, whether the firm's stockholders, directors, and managers should reevaluate how they distribute power and share information, and it explores why external board members often fail to exercise a strong voice in governance. It looks at the changing boundary of the firm, as partnerships and alliances have become more important, examining this new development in three types of market: emerging markets such as Eastern Europe, markets where economies of scale provide a critical advantage, and dynamic markets where speed is essential. It examines the use of suppliers in Japanese, American, and European firms, and finds the former to be more efficient. Some of the essays are quite eye-opening. For instance, one chapter demonstrates that firms can increase product variety at no extra cost, revealing how a study of the automotive industry shows that investing in training, in flexible manufacturing processes, and in better operations management will increase variety without compromising productivity or lowering quality. And one chapter sounds a strong note of dissent, contending that the design of organizations matters little to a global competitor--what matters is how managers think about the world, and how the operating procedures they use guide decision-making and behavior. In the final section, editors Bowman and Kogut reflect on two outstanding issues concerning the design of the firm: how much of what managers used to believe was critical to their success can they place outside their ownership boundaries; and how to deal with the complex challenges that modular design presents. The editors apply their conclusions to the Wharton School itself, making the book particularly valuable for anyone concerned with the quality and future of business education in America. Here then is the best thinking by leading experts in corporate design, who examine the best ways to generate speed, variety, and flexibility, to expand the firm over time and over national boundaries, and to prepare a corporation for the next century.

                                                    Book Description

Edith Penrose has been one of the most significant economists of the second part of the twentieth century. Her contribution to the theory of the firm has reinvented and productively developed the classical tradition in economics. It has informed the currently dominant resource/knowledge-based theory of the firm. Penrose's contribution, however, extends to a great variety of areas, to include industry organization, strategic management, international business, human resource management, economics of innovation and technological change, history, methodology, macroeconomics, and much more. This volume builds on a special issue of Contributions to Political Economy, that celebrated forty years since Penrose's classic The Theory of the Growth of the Firm. It includes fourteen chapters by leading contributors on the aforementioned aspects of Penrose's work. This book celebrates Penrose's contribution to economics and management. Leading scholars (including such 'classic' names as Robin Marris and George Richardson), assess Penrose's contribution to economics, strategic management, industry organization, and more. Using a Penrosean lens, these authors address the most important issues such as resource allocation and resource creation, co-ordination, innovation and growth. They cover topics ranging from the nature of the firm, firm growth, and strategy, to multinational firms, industry organization, innovation, and economic development. In so doing, they make contributions to scholarship of the highest quality, with significant implications for business and government policy on competition, industry, and development.

                                                          Description:
Theories of firm growth suggest that managers must resolve sequential crises at key stages. Explicit in these models is the accumulation of resources, including knowledge, which must be applied and (re)configured in order to create new structures and systems in order to overcome the crises at each stage. What these models do not provide is an understanding of how, or why, particular knowledge resources are considered salient, how knowledge is applied, and how changes to systems of application are caused. By re-conceptualizing knowledge not as a resource, but as an activity, this provides an alternative perspective on growth models. This research, conducted in three case study SMEs, and using Activity Theory as a methodological framework, examines how the case companies managed transition and innovation in organizational systems in order to resolve specific crises and facilitate growth. The findings indicate that rather than sequential crises, these firms were dealing with a number of crises concurrently, and solutions were significantly dependent on existing experience and systems of organising, manager's perception of the crises, and access to relevant knowledge. In these firms, growth was dependent on idiosyncratic solutions rather than on any prescriptive approach suggested by traditional growth models.

                                                            Book Description

The international dimension of business networks has remained relatively unexplored, mainly because international business writers focus upon multinational enterprises and network writers ignore international issues. In this book Professors Alan Rugman and Joseph D'Cruz bridge the literature on networks and multinationals by introducing the new concept of the flagship firm. In each business network strategic leadership is provided by the flagship firm, which is defined as a multinational enterprise. It has other partners: key suppliers; key customers; key competitors; and key partners in the non-business infrastructure. These business networks are usually located in the 'triad' regions of the European Union, North America, and Japan. There are strong cross-border network linkages within these regions, but less 'globalization' than regional economic integration. The theory of the flagship firm/five partners model is applied to the telecommunications, chemicals, automotive, and electronics sectors, amongst others, and the book reports on both empirical studies and field research of the international competitiveness of these sectors. The book will be of interest to academics, students, and professionals in the areas of international business, strategic management, political science, law, and sociology.

A searingly candid account of work and class in America from the author of How to Tell When You're Tired.

Drawing on his experiences as a veteran longshoreman and fruit tramp, Reg Theriault, author of How to Tell When You're Tired, which Robert Heilbroner called "extraordinary," describes the blue-collar culture and ethics that have defined America, and explains why they are worth preserving in the face of globalization and downsizing.

The Unmaking of the American Working Class tells the story behind the disappearance of blue-collar work in America, giving both a humorous picture of working-class labor and a devastating indictment of the forces that threaten it. Whether Republican or Democratic, every administration since World War II has fostered the destruction of large segments of the blue-collar working class. Theriault maintains that America is the poorer for such action, and argues that our society doesn't need to destroy this vital part of itself. Written for all workers, whatever color their collars, The Unmaking of the American Working Class takes a fresh look at the politics of work and its place in our society.
