Book Description
Carol Bishop made a pilgrimage across the United States in search of a way to express her deep connection to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. Her experience of Wright's architecture transcended a mere understanding of his design philosophy. In Frank Lloyd Wright: The Romantic Spirit Carol Bishop's paintings and photographs capture both the radiant energy and the ephemeral quality of Wright's architecture. Bishop's work also reveals how Wright's architecture inspires thoughts and feelings about the harmony between nature and humanity. Frank Lloyd Wright: The Romantic Spirit is a welcome addition to the rich publishing legacy on the work of this master architect. The artwork in this book will be the subject of an exhibit at the Huntington Museum, Pasadena, California in October 2005 and displayed at the Frank Lloyd Wright National Convention in 2005.

A beautiful book to enhance any library!.......1998-05-17
The descriptions by art expert Ralph Toledano are succinct and respectful and contain some interesting anecdotes. Best of all, they are short enough to just whet the appetite for the photographs.
This book takes you into the fabulous homes of the rich and aristocratic families of Italy and Sicily. From the exquisitely simple La Rocca Pisana, Lonigo to the amazingly rich Palazzo Doria Pamphilij in Rome, each house is different and interesting. Some are astonishing, like the Palazzo, Panza di Biumo, which has a peculiar mixture of ancient frescoes and abstract modern art that works in an odd sort of way. Many are private homes not open to the public, and therefore not able to be viewed in any other way except through this book. Unless you happen to be royalty yourself, of course!
The book was researched over 18 months by Jack Basehart, who must be incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to get to know all of these marvellous houses. Thanks for sharing them with us, Jack....
...And how about turning this book into a documentary series?
PS. If you can get hold of it, I think the hardback is well worth the extra money. This is a book you're going to want to keep.

In the Profiles section of the Yearbook, services offered by each global custodian in the worldwide securities markets are described in detail. A new service category for 2001, Outsourcing, is catching on with funds, plan sponsors, and investment managers. Other service categories included are Client Workstation Technology, Cash Management, Derivatives, Foreign Exchange, Fund Accounting, Network Management, Offshore Funds, Portfolio Management and Performance Measurement, Proxy Services, International Securities Lending, Tax Reclaims, Trade Execution and more.
A Network Management Chart for each global custodian identifies the network by country, including current and planned network additions, proprietary/non-proprietary, subcustodians and SEC 17f(5) qualified status.
Survey topics for 2001:
EM countries are reviewed to highlight those troublesome issues - EM Hot Spots - of import to the most savvy investor. The investor is provided with practical insights, accompanied by seasoned advice for sidestepping the many pitfalls. This year, a few custodians were less than pleased with developments in certain mature markets. Commentary on these countries is included as well.
Global Straight Through Processing (GSTP) has made very significant progress to date, achieving a number of milestones in a short time. What lies ahead is a series of major industry challenges, as viewed by the global custodians. Concern about the possibility of two diverging models for post trade processing was expressed, as a U.S. model, which addresses the industry change to T+1 settlements, differs from the global model. The survey discusses GSTP implementation challenges, expected benefits and implementation costs.
The international securities lending business had another boom year, with a 20% plus growth rate over last year. Although most custodians have lending business in over 30 countries, the mature countries tend to dominate the landscape. The European markets were strong, buoyed by the U.K. gilts market in 2000. The section is packed with charts and tables on current and past experiences by the world's largest players.
This year promises to bring the greatest roll-out of new, Internet-based products by global custodians. The survey touches on these new products, in addition to sorting-out a few exciting trends which are starting to unfold. The advent of e-commerce strategies deployed at the major banks may be the future platform for delivery of global custody services. A new, Internet-driven movement portends to rattle the competitive landscape in the not too distant future. The IT investments for the initiative are staggering.

Thriving In 24/7: Six Strategies for Taming the New World of Work
Sally Helgesen Manufacturer: Free Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:

Sally Helgesen has done a remarkable job of illuminating the ways the workplace has infringed upon our lives. She uses the pop-speak phrase 24/7 to symbolize the transformation of our sense of time through technology and the blurring of boundaries between work and home. Helgesen details changes including the shift from an industrial economy to a "knowledge economy"; the technology that has spawned a sleepless business culture; the leaner organizations with longer job descriptions; and the domestic drama of overscheduled children and overmanaged health care and finances. The result, warns Helgesen, is not that time is getting away from us, or that work intrudes upon leisure, but that "We have forfeited ways of being that are fundamental to us as humans."Yet Helgesen doesn't simply describe the challenges to our public and private lives. She also offers six smart strategies for pursuing what she calls "elegance and simplicity in all our decisions and taking advantage--or resisting--what technology has wrought." Her ideas include a new approach to networking through "building a web of inclusion," learning to "zigzag" by charting an individual path of development, and building a personal brand that expresses core values. Helgesen's artful balance of observations and suggestions creates a insightful and practical guide in a rock-around-the-clock world. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Thriving in 24/7 is a guide to navigating a new world of work in which all the rules have changed.
In the 24/7 world, home can seem like a branch office. E-mail beckons at 3 A.M.; we work not nine-to-five but across multiple time zones; beeper messages interrupt private moments. Whether we're planning a vacation, choosing health insurance, or buying a car, we are flooded with so many options that our personal lives feel like second jobs. Even the pleasures that should refresh us -- Thanksgiving dinner or lunch with a close friend -- too often seem like tasks on an infinite to-do list. How, asks Sally Helgesen, do we keep from being swallowed up by a world that is fundamentally out of sync with human nature?
Helgesen, a premier thinker on the role of work in the knowledge economy, offers readers six powerful strategies for achieving and maintaining equilibrium in this new world. Drawing upon dozens of interviews with men and women adept at navigating life in 24/7, she urges us to:
START AT THE CORE: We can move more nimbly in a complex world if we confront personal history, locate our inner voice, get comfortable in the neutral zone, and take inventory on a regular basis.
LEARN TO ZIGZAG: We can master the art of improvisation if we learn from the youngest generation, think in terms of "gigs," plan to keep learning all our lives, rework our definitions of loyalty, and internalize optimism.
CREATE OUR OWN WORK: We can do this (even if we stay in our present jobs) by articulating our value, integrating our passions, identifying our market, running our own shop, and targeting multiple centers of gravity.
WEAVE A STRONG WEB OF INCLUSION: We can build the support we need if we learn to go deep fast, understand the strength of weak ties, grab the spotlight, and master the simple art of looking people up.
BUILD A CLEAR BRAND: We can brand ourselves unforgettably by becoming highly conscious of our practice, our materials, our design, and the symbols that we use.
PRACTICE THE RHYTHM OF RENEWAL: We can find true refreshment if we learn to connect with timeless rhythms, identify the true sources of our joy, practice mindfulness, and cultivate the elements of Slow.
Writing with simple eloquence and piercing intelligence, Sally Helgesen shows us that bucking up or burning out aren't the only choices if we want to get ahead. This indispensable handbook offers an imaginative, sometimes radical, blueprint for achieving balance in an unbalanced world.
