One of the finest works written on Architectural Theory ever.
This masterful text by the late Christian Norberg-Schulz is used as compuslory literature around the world, especially in the architectural curricula in United States. It should get another printing definately.

Book Description

From a poet and essayist whose writing about nature has won her comparisons with Gary Snyder and Terry Tempest Williams comes a new collection that offers further evidence of her ability to trace the intersections of the human and nonhuman worlds. The title poem is a lyrical excavation of the city of Prague, where layers of history, culture and nature have accumulated to form “a genius loci”—a guardian spirit.

From “Genius Loci”

Return to a place where nothing in particular can be seen
to explain why you return, nothing you can name,
though you can touch the memory of the landscape—

linden trees in a hedgerow, cut wheatfield, ruins of the
longhouse,
rolling meadow of sunflowers blooming, the musk of
their oil,
contained heat.

5 out of 5 stars A finely tuned sensibility looks at the natural world.......2006-07-27

This is the third collection of poems from Alison Deming, a writer who combines science and art in ways that few others seem able to do. There is much to be enjoyed here, especially for those who care about the natural world and our troubled relationship to it. I read this collection while camping in the wilderness and felt that her poems very much enriched my experience. Overall, this is a very fine collection. Incidentally, if you have never read Deming's work, don't miss her set of poems called "Monarchs." It is superb.

This collection will do much to resurrect the reputation of the California native who became one of Life magazine's first staff photographers, only to burn much of his work after being devastated by personal tragedy in 1956. Bristol languished in obscurity for nearly three decades before a quirk of fate prompted him to reclaim his legacy. Among the images salvaged for posterity here are pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge under construction, Depression era street scenes, farm laborers, assignments for Edward Steichen's special World War II photographic unit, and views of a bombed-out Tokyo.

                    Book Description

This beautiful and striking monograph, the first major publication of Horace Bristol's work, pays homage to his genius with over 100 exquisitely reproduced duotone images. In the tradition of the great populists Alfred Eisenstadt and Dorothea Lange, Horace Bristol used his camera to record human, intimate moments: from poignant images of migrant farm workers during the Depression (his photographs inspired Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath) to compelling portraits of post-war Japan and Southeast Asia. An early staff photographer for Life magazine, Bristol was wildly prolific in the '30s and '40s, and tireless in his pursuit of the revelatory moment. With a humility, precision, and formal composition that is as striking today as it was innovative in its own time, Horace Bristol's pioneering artistry assures his importance among the finest documentary photographers of our era.

                          Book Description

Admired as a visionary leader and brilliant business mind, feared as a ruthless and formidable competitor, and loathed as an egomaniac with an explosive temper, Oracle founder and CEO Larry Ellison has emerged as one of the most controversial figures in a sea of brilliant, eccentric Silicon Valley luminaries.

But for such a high-profile character, Ellison maintains an enigmatic air, and his superachieving, multimillion-dollar company remains a rarely studied entity. Now, The Oracle of Oracle goes behind the scenes to uncover the breakthrough ideas and winning strategies that have propelled Oracle's phenomenal growth and breathtaking success.

The book walks readers through Oracle's fascinating history since its relational database hit the market in 1977, identifying and explaining strategies such as:

                          * Forge ahead and fix weaknesses--lessons from the early 90s when Oracle derailed, but was nursed back to health. * Grow the Oracle way--by making new products, not acquiring new companies. * Crush the competition--it's not enough to succeed; all others must fail. * Sales today make markets tomorrow--tap into the sales force to develop products, promote a vision, beat competitors.

The Oracle of Oracle is an intriguing, illuminating read for entrepreneurs who wonder what it takes to build a world-class company from scratch...for managers and executives who want to integrate Oracle's philosophies and culture into their own...and for business readers who relish an up-close report from the battle zones of the software industry.

1 out of 5 stars I regret borrowing this book from the library.......2005-02-28

This book is based on what others have publicly written about Oracle, and as I read this, I get a very strong feeling that I am going through a "second hand reading" of those articles. The author shared what she understood from reading those artciples and papers, but I don't get the feeling that she understands the subject she is talking about at all.

And I learn a new word from reading this book, deepness [ page 208 ]. Amazingly, that word is found in several online dictioaries. Fortunately or unfortunately, this is not found in my printed copy of Oxford American Desk Dictionary and Thesaurus. If more books like these were printed, 'O' and 'A' levels English would not have been so hard.

1 out of 5 stars Unsophisticated and Misguided.......2004-03-09

This book was a huge disappointment. The author does not appear to have any previous background on this dynamic industry. This book is not even suitable for a primer as much of Ms. Stone's analysis is not accurate. Having worked for the company, I can attest to the fact that its history is not as simple as portrayed in the book. Stone seems bent on proving that Ellison - despite his rock star ego - is the epitome of a true leader.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book, But What Does the Future Hold?.......2003-08-14

I was a big fan of Ellison's swashbuckling style, iconoclasm, functioning as a much needed and cash rich arch enemy to The Borg from the North, long history of success, but things just don't seem to be the same without Ray Lane kind of functioning as Ellison's superego. The Oracle of Oracle had experienced a great run up until Lane's departure, and companies don't flourish on the cult of a personality alone.

I dumped my Oracle stock a while back, but hope Ellison's seeming spiral into ill advised hubris isn't completely intractable. The story of Oracle and Ellison is more than compelling, and only time will tell whether Ellison's risks in Lane's absence will prove fruitful or fatal.

A final note: Mergers and acquisitions are often great for investment bankers and lawyers, but not necessarily great for shareholders and customers. The bigger the merger and/or acquisition, the bigger the potential problems as well. Seems that Oracle is biting off more than it can chew with PeopleSoft.

                          4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2002-06-18

Despite recent troubles that might cause readers to quibble with Florence M. Stone's description of Oracle as a "phenomenal success," this examination of Larry Ellison and the company that he created is worth your time. Stone sticks to a single theme: How do Ellison's personal beliefs, characteristics and personality affect the way Oracle does business? In answering this question, the book delves into the brutish outlook of company and founder, which Stone summarizes as, "crush the competition." Oddly, Ellison himself is not present. Instead, we glimpse him only through the words of official spokesmen and journalists. Luckily, these accounts were written after the dot-com collapse, providing the book with a balanced, up-to-date perspective. We from getAbstract recommend this book to all readers, whether your interests are in high tech or general business strategy.

                          1 out of 5 stars Mindless Drivel.......2002-06-03

At the outset, it should be pointed out that the publisher of this wretched little book is the American Management Association. There are those who consider their publications to represent the height of business sophistication; others should consider spending their time and money elsewhere.

According to biographical information on the flyleaf, Florence Stone is the "editorial director of Web management communications" at the AMA, "and previously served as the organization's group editor of newsletters and journals." In other words, a glorified administrative assistant. No other qualifications for writing this book are stated, and the content does not suggest otherwise.

Ms. Stone lives in a remarkably simple world. Her basic premise is "Larry Ellison is rich; therefore he is a genius." She totally ignores the more interesting question of how someone who thumbs his nose at conventional business wisdom (much of which is merchandised by the AMA) could have achieved Mr. Ellison's level of success. Here is a man who routinely violates the law, intentionally misleads his customers, abuses and ultimately fires his key employees, and knifes his business associates in the back, yet new candidates for abuse keep pounding on the door, seeking the opportunity to feed Larry's insatiable ego. Why?

That is the key question that Ms. Stone's sycophantic little book fails to address.

                          Book Description

"In 1982 the U.S. government embarked on a training program everyone knew couldn't work. More than twenty years and billions of dollars later, politicians are still voting for it."

Job training has long been promoted as a central policy response to poverty and unemployment. Both Democrats and Republicans have trumpeted training as the answer to everything from welfare to NAFTA. The Job Training Charade provides a comprehensive critique showing that training has been a near-total failure. Even more dramatically, the book shows how politicians have ignored repeated reports of the program's failure, and have kept funding a policy they know cannot work.

Gordon Lafer first examines the economic assumptions and track record of training policy. He goes on to provide a political analysis of why job training has remained so popular despite widespread evidence of its economic failure. The author concludes that job training functions less as an economic prescription aimed at solving poverty than as a political strategy aimed at managing the popular response to economic distress.

The Job Training Charade is a landmark book showing how a bipartisan consensus may coalesce behind a phantom policy that serves political needs while ignoring economic realities.

5 out of 5 stars David vs. Goliath.......2004-02-14

Gordon Lafer shows us clearly the etiology of the federally-funded job training programs such as JTPA and today WIA. He shows us clearly why these programs are political responses and not actually based in "the truth" of unemployment at all. There are too few jobs available to help poor people with a band-aid approach. Although he does not come out and say it, Lafer's implication is that the CETA program, public funding of jobs, was more to the point for poor people. The government then acts as the employer of last resort. He probably feels, and I agree, that it will come to that again soon, because corporate America is out to make a profit, not help the workers, and unions? Well, they're shrinking and losing even the little say-so they did have, witness the grocery strike right now in Southern California. So, eventually, probably sooner than later, there will be many idle people lingering and you know what the devil does with idle lingering people. The only redeeming element of politics that we can find in Lafer's scathing analysis of Ronald Reagan and his ilk, is that what goes around comes around. Politics goes in cycles. CETA had its day, just as the New Deal did, and the War on Poverty. Now we're in the thick of a backlash period, but it can't last. That is, if it does last, it won't be the same old U.S. anymore, will it? More like Unbrave New World? Diximus.

5 out of 5 stars This is an outstanding book.......2003-09-17

Lafer's analysis is first rate. All the numbers are there, but what makes this book exceptional is the clear and accessible writing Lafer uses to present the material. Anyone who wants to know the politics and the economics behind job training efforts in the United States will LOVE this book. For anyone interested in the ever growing influence of corporate America into matters of national economic and educational policy, Lafer's _The Job Training Charade_ is essential reading.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect analysis of why people hire workers.......2003-05-02

You need to read this book.
It shows clearly the motivations employers
                          use to make hiring decisions.

Dr. Lafer shows the true reasons hire/not hire
                          decisions are made.
It fits perfectly with an economic model: cost.
He shows, through government statistics and interviews
with employers, the true motivations for hiring.
                          It's all about cost (obviously).
But i'm not summarizing! The book gives a much
better description of this huge trend, affecting
                          each of our lives.
It starts out with an analysis of the job training
program for lesser educated persons. The chapter
that affects me, the 2nd one, "Does education really matter"
is 20+ pages of information (not opinion) of why
people hire. It's so easy to say "there is a skills mismatch".
Yet, i've seen organized people rise to prominent positions
based solely on their abilities to listen to their boss, and be
organized. Learning more and more from universities won't
                          save you.
You need to understand what the reasons are.

The writing style is very clear. You're not confused
with arcane economic jargon. The facts are laid out,
and the supporting details are put in footnotes.

I read a lot of books on employment, advancement,
the job trends of the future. This book explains
so many of the true reasons. And when you understand the general premise, it fits perfectly with the low cost
                          economic model sweeping the world.
