Book Description

In today's increasingly health-conscious world, homeowners are paying more attention to creating spaces conducive to a fit lifestyle. The possibilities available go far beyond building a home gym that you may or may not ever use. Whether by grand staircases for daily exercise or thoughtful floor plans to encourage walking or even cleverly incorporated climbing walls, indoor pools, or other sporting elements, your home can promote good health through its design. High Fit Home examines this phenomenon through fully illustrated profiles of over a dozen homes that architecturally create health-conscious environments.

4 out of 5 stars Great Photography: Are the Homes Show Harbingers of the Future or Isolated Examples.......2005-09-29

If you want great, stunning photographs of what can be done to design a home to assure the physical fitness of those living in it, this book is a must buy. The heart of the book is the beautifully illustrated examples of homes that have been designed to be fitness friendly. The introduction and chapter 1 discussing the history of fitness and need for people to be more fit in modern society are standard stuff. The book concludes with helpful hints about what to do if you want to make your own home fitness friendly.

That said, the examples of fitness friendly homes are obviously those built for the upper income tier of upper income groups. Knowing such home design and re-modeling was possible and being done on a limited basis, I was hoping the author would at least speculate on whether the innovations to make the American home fitness friendly would percolate down to become standard in all upper income and eventually middle income housing and even suggest what would be needed to make this happen.

As more and more people work from home and lifestyles become ever more sedentary, we need more ways to make exercise possible, so more on what could be done to enhance the average, or even slightly above average, home to make it fitness friendly would have earned the book a fifth star in my review.

This is the kind of coffee table book that you actually read! It's not only gorgeous and inspiring to see --the pictures are amazing, but the back story on each very interesting. Super creative concept to combine architecture and health/fitness It's smart, organized, current, futuristic and historical. A must read/see for health-minded and architectural enthusiasts.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

4 out of 5 stars A well illustrated history of this rare art.......1998-12-22

This book covers the almost lost art of point engraving on glass. The history is quite thorough, from the Romans to the Renaisance, to modern times. The photographs of point engraved glass are just incredible (as a point engraver myself, it's an extremely hard subject to photograph well). The author has included photographs of his own work, which do not dominate the book, but rather serve to illustrate that this a subject of which Mr. Whistler has great personal mastery. The bowl on page 63 is incredible.

Beware, if you're looking to get started in teh field, this book is a history, not a how-to. Also, point engraving is an incredibly time consuming, thankless art.

      Book Description

For over half a century, acclaimed photographer Ruth Bernhard has worked to "simplify, isolate, and give emphasis to form with greatest clarity" in her radiant photographs of the female nude. Now, with Chronicle Books' timely reissue of her best-selling volume, The Eternal Body, Bernhard's most evocative images are once again available in a superb collection, complete with an insightfill text, that pays tribute to a living legend. Hauntingly sensual yet classically reserved, the book's ethereal duotone photographs appear to be illuminated from within so that even the simplest lines of the human form -- a draped torso, a curved neck, an angled limb -- take on a complexity not often seen in work of this kind. A master artist whose technical prowess places her among the ranks of the greatest photographers of our time, Ruth Bernhard has created a masterpiece of expression and sensitivity in The Eternal Body.

Bernhard simiply reminds us of the beauty of the female body. It is a study of perfect lighting and posing.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning figure photo.......2007-06-07

Ansel Adams declared Berhard "the greatest photographer of the nude." Perhaps she is, but I haven't wholly understood why - not because the work is obscure (it's not at all), but because it's deep.

This book contains plenty of evidence. These fifty B&W pictures span forty years of her career, in chronological order. In the 1930s, "In the Circle" and "Embryo" use simple props to contrast the harsh geometries of human products with the softness of the human herself. Other photos from that era use running water or draping to highlight the figure. By the 1950s, though, Berhard had simplified down to just the figure itself, as in "Dancer's Hips," making her work plainer, but bolder and more monumental. Still later, Berhard added back in screens to soften focus and create a new play of shadow. Although interesting, I'm still more moved by the compositions in terms of figure alone, including "Crossover," "Two Forms," and "Sand Dune."

Throughout, Bernhard examines the female models with a female eye, celebrating the feminine in the figure for what it is. "Early Nude," "Harvest," and "Hourglass," among others, emphasize curves that embody strength - curves that other photographers, especially male, could have made awkward. It's a wonderful collection, one that I know I'll keep coming back to. I have much to learn from it.

      5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!.......2007-05-12

I recently purchased this book and why did I wait this long? All I can say is breathtaking. Being a photographer who sometimes does nudes for personal project, it is a challenging task to compose and light the human body avoiding from making it "pornlike" or overtly sexual. Each style has its own place in the marketplace; however, the former requires much more skills than just a good looking model.

      4 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-08-25

Well, it's four stars worth of disappointed...and I realize it's something of a heresy to be less than thrilled by the work of this pioneer artist in the field of the photographic nude. This softbound book is a touch under a foot square, and the 50 photographs are of nearly that size. They are all black-and-white, though there is a great range of experimental treatment that belies the suggestion of sameness. Some superimpose female figures and subjects from nature ("Harvest," e.g., is the midriff of a very pregnant woman superimposed with a field of grain); some are highly abstract, utilizing very high-intensity light with shadow contrasts, delivering a very impressionistic human torso; and others utilize transparent material and the like to create unique effects.

Why didn't I like it better? I don't like impressionistic, highly stylized nudes, but realistic skin tones and recognizable features. Beauty counts more for me than technical fireworks. You may feel otherwise, especially if you are a professional photographer.

            Book Description

The world of modern capitalism is a global network both of corporations and of cities - 'world command cities' such as New York, London and Tokyo; 'specialized command cities' which concentrate on particular industries, such as Detroit; 'state command cities' such as Washington and Brasilia; and so on. These cities, linked by an organizational web of transnational corporations, are the pins holding the capitalist world economy together in the new international division of labour. In The Capitalist City a group of eminent scholars analyzes the intricate relationships among cities, state policies and urban politics at a time of economic restructuring at global, national and local levels to provide an original and timely contribution to one of the most important areas of political and social science.

I do not understand how the editor or author determined the tag line for this book, but nothing could be further from the truth. The tag line states: "The Project Management Guide to Planning and Implemeneting System Installations, Conversions and Mergers." There is nothing about project management in the book nor conversions nor implementations. It was written at about the time the first PMBOK was published and uses no PMBOK definitions.

16 - Employee Enhancement as a competitive Differentiator
            17 - Making a Merger Work

The chapter on Critical Path defines 'critical paths' as 'each of the critical factorys has a logical relationship the the others, and those relationshipas are direct, not funneld through some control point.' As you can see, its not the longest path through a schedule network.

The chapter on mergers, the last chapter in the book, is merely a discussion of the high level characteristics of a good merger candidate. Nothing about how to actually do it and certainly no 'Project Mangement Guide' as promised by the tag line.

This book provides no value to the financial sector project manager.

Don Snyder had a plum academic job, a peaceful, almost perfect life, and plans for far more success in the future. Teaching English and creative writing at Colgate University couldn't have been more stimulating; he sought ever more work and thrived on student contact. When his contract was suddenly not renewed, Snyder was uncomprehending. Nonetheless, he responded immediately--thinking his efforts and accomplishments would pay off, as they always had in the past. Interestingly, he took some time before relaying the news to his pregnant wife, hoping that he could match the bad news with that of another appointment. After almost 100 rejection letters, Snyder found himself helping (not necessarily the word his fellow laborers probably used) to build a house in Maine, and worrying about being able to afford heavier boots. This book might have been preachy or self-indulgent. It is neither.

4 out of 5 stars Hits close to home .......2005-04-20

I just read this book while still mired in a job search going on three years. The emotional tailspin the author displays is heart-wrenching and familiar; the tone of the first 200 pages felt like reading my own journals. I did not identify with the author's deceptions and strange behaviors, however, such as lying to his wife or to an insurance company, or considering selling a new baby. But everyone has their own threshold for going haywire, and the point of this book is that Don Snyder got through it and learned something about life, work, and family.

THE CLIFF WALK, beyond the author's personal journey, raises excellent questions about the "American Dream" and what it means in our modern age. It also looks at the meaning of work, and how we draw self-esteem -- even identity -- from what we do for pay. This is a courageous book, even if you don't always approve of how the author responds to his plight, and it offers a strong dose of perspective on what really matters.

5 out of 5 stars Finding strength in vulnerability.......2005-02-25

This is the ultimate victory story...with a twist. Unlike most autobiographical profiles, this one doesn't stand tall and tell you how great it is to be great. The thing is, it doesn't wrap itself up neatly either; the ending doesn't suddenly justify everything that has happened along the way. It's a formula all it's own, one that carries you up and down through the vulnerable channels this man had to endure.
What's so refreshing about this book is kind of what I liked about the movie "Fargo"--the realization that a good story is as much the cumulitive value of the bits and pieces as it is the linear value--of this happening, then this, then this. Moments like his talking to a stranger while chipping golf balls capture the true feeling, the mixed combination of killing time with his genuine fear of being unemployed for even one more day. It's a strange loneliness that we all feel from time to time, even when we're not truly alone. Again, most writers need to have scaled great mountains before they'll write a story where they hang themselves out like this. Don Snyder makes an exception. In today's world, most nonfiction books succeed based on what they emphasize, leave in, or leave out. Snyder tells it all--even the bits that aren't exactly flattering.
And in the end, he shows his true grit: not with eagles or birdies, but simply by making the pars he's supposed to make. And don't let my analogies fool you: it's not about golf. It's just your typical combination of fear and pride and confusion that somehow lead us to where we are today. And it's that kind of simplicity that makes a book like this stand the test of time, whether it be now or 50 years down the road.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2005-02-08

My husband and I both read this book a few years ago and agreed that it was one of the most profound memoirs we'd ever read. Snyder was born to write and we are blessed to have his thoughts recorded for posterity.

4 out of 5 stars Liked it in the end.......2004-12-27

I am in a situation similar to the character in the book to a lesser degree. So it was with great interest that I dove into this book. I was curious to read about Don Snyder's feelings and actions while he was unemployed. Probably many of us share his overconfidence about the ease of finding another job. And many of us subconsciously or not, look down upon those who have to earn their living in lower level jobs. Some of his thoughts and actions I could understand, some I could not. For example, why wouldn't he let his wife find a job and he stay home and watch the kids?(which would much harder than working, let me tell you!) And why didn't he take a job while waiting for responses from the colleges he applied to, since his wife wasn't working? And he stands by and watches his savings go lower and lower. Some of these actions caused me to lose sympathy for him while reading a good portion of the book. One could say he was arrogant and a snob. But by the end he learns valuable lessons about family, work, life, and himself. It does read like a story rather than a clinical assessment. A worthwhile read.

4 out of 5 stars it could happen to you.......2004-06-20

A brutally honest and intriguing look at the stages we go through when employed. The writer wasn't just unemployed, however, his former life as a college professor was golden enough to give a deep-set but false sense of security that things would always continue to be that good. But whatever you chalk up other people's unemployment, too, you can't dismiss Snyder's with an easy explanation. Finally, he moves his wife and children and began doing manual labor. Snyder doesn't shy away from portraying his less than flattering side, but when he finally tells his son, "You do the work right even when you're working for a jerk," you're on his side all the way.
