Customer Reviews:
Very well done!.......2007-06-29
These Radio Theatre style audiobooks are excellent. The characters in Anne of Green Gables sound a lot like the ones in the movie, which was an added plus for us because we've loved the movie. Another excellent Focus on the Family Radio Theatre series is the Chronicles of Narnia. Exceptionally well done.

Book Description
Bad Marxism is a critical political analysis of Cultural Studies. It assesses the radical credentials of a discipline that commonly claims to be radical, but is often disengaged from political movements and political struggles as they are actually found in the world today. In particular, Hutnyk looks at how Cultural Studies has used and abused Marxism - that while cultural theorists engage with Marx, their interpretations of Marx ensure that much of his radical political potential is lost.
The book focuses on a number of key theorists who are all in some way influenced by, or comment, on Marx: Jacques Derrida, James Clifford, Georges Bataille, and Michael Hardt and Toni Negri in Empire. Coming from diverse intellectual and disciplinary positions (from anthropology to very rarefied philosophy), these theorists have from different directions been highly influential on contemporary cultural studies. Hutnyk attempts to be attentive to the diversity of their positions, but also shows how within that diversity certain common problems emerge, centering on their treatment of Marx and their use of Marxist categories, which leads them and Cultural Studies to an ineffective politics.

Book Description
Begun as a critique of J.S. Mill, Hawley's first and most important work evolved into a significant original contribution to the theory of the risk-taking entrepreneur as a principal factor of production, and concomitantly, to the risk theory of profit. J.A. Schumpeter admired Hawley's work for its focus on the entrepreneur and appraised it, together with the work of Frank H. Knight, as the most successful development of Mill's element of risk. Hawley also contributed to the theory of underconsumption and took a radical stance towards maldistribution of income. "An original and rigorous thinker, Hawley anticipated much that has since found acceptance in economic theory." Encyclopedia of the Social Sciences

Customer Reviews:
what a find.......2003-04-12
this guide was as good as having a connection inside the company in terms of finding out what it's really like. i recommend this if you're serious about working for moniter.
a goldmine.......2003-03-07
This was a goldmine of info on a small, private company that doesn't get a great deal of press. I've had a hard time getting good info on this company, so it was a relief to get a hold of this guide. I had a couple friends of friends who've worked at Monitor, and so i knew the rep was a good one. But since I couldn't get in touch with these friends of friends, the guide was the next best thing. Plus it's current, moreso than the insight from these FoFs who worked for Monitor several years ago. Thanks WetFeet. I'll be looking at your website some more to help me get my resume writing, interviewing and other skills up to speed.

Columnist and consultant Rhonda Abrams believes today's most successful businesses are shifting from a patriarchal style of leadership to one in which characteristics such as growth, development, maturity, and nurturing--all traits traditionally associated more often with mothers than fathers--have moved to the forefront. Wear Clean Underwear: Using Mom's Fundamental Lessons to Run an Extraordinary Business is her light-hearted but utterly serious examination of this continuing trend, matching familiar motherly maxims like "How do you know you won't like it, if you've never tried it?" and "Don't get too big for your britches" with actual managerial practices at companies such as Nordstrom, Kinko's, and 3M. "Moms everywhere have developed an almost universal language to achieve their goals and instill common values," she writes.
Virtually everyone's mother at one time or another told them to "Clean your plate, children are starving in China" or whatever country happened to be in the news. Think about all the lessons in that one little line: don't waste your resources, understand that you are more fortunate than others, empathize with those who have less.
In this clever volume, Abrams shows how such wisdom can be both relevant and useful in today's business environment. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
Eat your vegetables. Share. Say you're sorry.
We all remember familiar sayings and lessons from our mothers. Now Rhonda Abrams, one of the nation's most respected business writers and consultants, shows how these lessons--and the values they represent--serve as the foundation for building and running great companies.
In a time of cynicism about business and public life, Abrams offers examples of companies that excel by embracing Mom's timeless values. They know the bottom line is just that--the bottom. The key to greatness is building a business on a foundation of core values and running it in ways that would make Mom proud.
In
Wear Clean Underwear: Business Wisdom from Mom, Abrams interprets Mom's lessons for today's business climate. Based on in-depth research and in-person interviews, she builds each chapter around a saying we've all heard from Mom:
"If all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you jump, too?" Southwest Airlines bucked the trend of keeping wages and benefits low while competing on the basis of price--and became one of the ten most-admired companies in the country and one of the few consistently profitable airlines.
"Don't judge a book by its cover." A severely dyslexic man realized he'd never get a good job, so he opened his own business, which was built on mutual trust and communication with his employ-ees--a company called Kinko's, now with over nine hundred locations nationwide.
"How do you know you don't like it, when you've never tried it?" 3M became the most innovative company in America by encouraging all its employees to experiment--for instance, the rocket scientist who helped develop a billion-dollar product by designing a Barbie dress.
Sprinkled throughout are sidebars that focus on famous figures and business leaders such as Scott Adams and Ben and Jerry, who share what they learned from their moms.
Wear Clean Underwear: Business Wisdom from Mom offers a refreshing and lively combination of serious insights, solid advice, and heartwarming stories. If you have a business, a Mom, or a life, you'll find Wear Clean Underwear indispensable.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful!.......2002-01-30
Columnist, consultant, and best-selling author Rhonda Abrams has written a clever and enjoyable book that compiles the simple wisdom of motherly advice into a basic primer on ethical business behavior. Without offending the mothers of the world, this isn't a book to read if you're looking for real-world management technique. It is however an entertaining and sometimes inspiring collection of aphorisms that is especially compelling when presenting luminaries like Southwest Airline's Herb Kelleher expounding on the virtues taught them by their own moms. We [...] recommend this book as a refreshing break, and as a great gift.
Love this Author!.......2001-10-31
I have both of Rhonda Abrams' other books, The Successful Business Plan and The Successful Business Organizer. So I knew I wouldn't be disappointed with this wonderful book. It's very different from Rhonda's other books -- this is a narrative of great companies, including examples of how they became great and what keeps them prosperous. It's so well-written as well as insightful. It's really a gem of a book. Gave me specific things I could put to use in my own business --- especially in dealing with customers. This is one of my favorite books, ever. I'm giving this for gifts, even to my non-business friends. (You'll love the story about Odwalla, guaranteed!)
Insightful, intelligent, entertaining.......1999-11-07
Even if you're not interested in business, you'll get a kick out of this book. The stories are great, some very touching. But if you are interested in business, you'll learn a lot and find new ways to make your business fit your values. Who knew Mom was so smart?
A great read!.......1999-10-23
What a Refreshing and encouraging book! As someone at the beginning of my working life, it's reassuring to know that I am not alone in my belief that businesses can (and should!) be run with integrity. I will definitely take Abrams' message with me in my career, now and in the future.
The business textbook with integrity and heart!.......1999-09-07
If you snickered at the title Wear Clean Underwear, you are not alone. Who could resist the pull of familarity of mom's wisdom?. We go back and remember our childhood, and read on to see the foundation of a solid future. This is wisdom like no other. Wear Clean Underwear is the best business book I have read. Rich with examples from real life and big business, this book is all you'll ever need for genuine business success. Wear Clean Underwear is about integrity and character, and you can bet you'll learn about, cheer, and affirm both as you walk through the pages of this book. You will find it warm, inspiring and full of business "smarts." It is a nourishing book stocked with lots of meat and potatoes, and delivers some mighty fine just desserts. And even though its wisdom has come down through the ages, Wear Clean Underwear is one of a kind, fresh, and current. I'm sure it's a book that'll be around for a long time, and probably for all time. It is a fun and joyful read that gives light to the business of making money while doing what right. And this book is right on, right on time.

The HR Scorecard: Linking People, Strategy, and Performance
ASIN: 0198782039 |
Book Description
Life is tough in organizations, both for managers and the managed. Negotiating the rapids of restructuring, downsizing, and refocusing the core business brings with it huge upheavals in job security, the smashing of traditional career structures, and a constant imperative for employees to update their skills while working in an environment of great uncertainty. Based on close collaboration with a number of high profile organizations - BT, Citibank, Glaxo Wellcome, Hewlett Packard, Kraft Jacobs, Suchard, Lloyds-TSB Group, the NHS, and WH Smith - this book sheds light on the organizational responses to large scale changes and details the changing demands made of employees in the process. This book goes beyond fashionable management rhetoric to uncover the reality of human resource management. The team of top researchers examines: the organizational strategies pursued in the face of fast-changing circumstances the links between what is intended and what is realised the way in which HR interventions impact on the individual the influence which HR strategies have on everyday management behaviour This book is a key source of new information for both managers and students about the current state of human resource management and its possible future direction.
Customer Reviews:
A brillant study on SHRM !!!.......1999-05-29
As stated by L.Gratton et.al. " this is not a book about the rhetoric of senior managers, embodied in such, statements as 'people are our most important asset' or 'career development is the core of our relationship with our employees'. It is not a set of idealized descriptions of how Hewlett Packard manages performance or a wish list of change management practices at Glaxo Pharmaceuticals UK. This is a book about the reality of people management in large, complex companies" such as BT Payphones, Chelsea & Westminster Healthcare Trust, Citibank, Glaxo Pharmaceuticals, Hewlett Packard, Kraft Jacob Suchard, Lloyds Bank UK Retail Banking, and W.H.Smith.
Throughout the book L.Gratton et.al. examine four key questions :
(1).What internal and external variables impact on the ability of organizations to devise and deliver a strategic approach to managing people?
(2).What is the relationship between what is intended and what is realized?
(3).In what way do human resource interventions impact on the individual?
(4).How does human resource strategy influence everyday managerial behaviour?
by considering the role of line management and human resource function, by providing precise observations about the link between strategy and people process, and by looking again at the form and reality of the psychological contract.
I highly recommend this brillant study to all HR professionals.
