Customer Reviews:
This is a great book..........2002-04-11
I love this book! The photos are exquisite and the writing exceeds anything else you will find on the subject of decorating. This book goes far beyond coffeetable status--it is inspiring all the way around; from the exercises and hands-on decorating rituals to the stories of healing through creativity.
Be prepared to look at decorating in a new way--I have, as a professional designer I am rethinking my work. Thank-you Kelee Katillac.
A revolutionary book by an author with heart.......2002-04-07
I saw Kelee Katillac on the Carolyn Myss Show on Oprah's Oxygen Network. I was blown away by her personal story of healing while living in a trailer house--through creativity, .... I couldn't wait to get it so went out and bought it that day. I read it in two days and it has changed my life. Finally I feel good about the creative ideas I had for my home. I always thoughtthat because I wasn't a designer or artist that they must be wrong. Her life and work-with all income levels and types of people shows that we are all creative and our positive ideas are messages from the Creator.
I am now a follower of this idea and am convinced of her message's power;through her newsgroup I have found many others who feel the same and I feel I speak for them too--a person who has given her whole life to help others engenders a lot of loyalty--Katillac even sold her own home's contents to fund a Habitat for Humanity program.
...
Truly new & creative ideas for home & spirit.......2002-04-04
After reading this book I had so many ideas I didn't know where to begin. I first saw Kelee on Oprah and thought her story was remarkable....her work with Habitat for Humanity is so inspiring. And now I can use her immense spirit and creativity for my own home. She is like a spiritual Martha Stewart but so much more interesting!
Not A Good Book.......2002-03-29
I tried reading this book but both the content and the style were
terrible. I learned nothing from it and I am highly disappointed
with the reviews I read because it was those positive reviews that convinced me to read the book. My intention is not to be critical but I can't help believe that the people who wrote these reviews were friends of the author. There are many other books that I can recommend that are a more informative read than this book.
Prepare to gain a new perspective.......2002-01-01
Thank you, Kellee Katillac, for this beautiful work. This book helps to break apart that cookie-cutter design look and add meaning to your living/working environment. The quiz spread through the book is also a good way to become acquainted with someone you may forget in this chaotic world...yourself.

"The lorelei they were chasing was that of treasure--".......2006-07-17
"--specifically,gold and silver. Not just money, but treasure; the distinction is important, for while money is the stuff of civilization, treasure is the stuff of dreams--and what we are speaking of here is a long dreaming."
I happened upon this book completely by happenstance. I was taking the Subway to an annual Art Exhibit at City Hall in Toronto. Outside the Subway station,on the lawn,a group of residents from a nearby apartment were holding a lawn sale .I noticed this book, but didn't think too much about it;thinking it was a run of the mill book about Ghost Towns of the Old West;of which I already have several.Putting in a bit of time as my wife wandered around;I casually picked it up and thumbed through it. What a surprise;it was an excellent book covering all aspects of the development of the Old West;not only of The US but also of Western Canada,Alaska and the Yukon.
While the book has 430 full-color photograph, many which are full -page and several double page;there is also excellent text of 40,000 words. The text is written with a deep understanding of the spirit, hopes, loves, fears, strugles, strife, and all those things that made the Old West what it was.
The photographs do an excellent job on the material side of the west, but does not include any photographs of the people. This gives the book a very lonesome and sad effect. I don't mention this as a criticism as that is just the point the authors are trying, and in fact do, accompolish. Their point is that all the people who cerated the west are gone,so are most of the buildings, and this is all that is left. The authors mention that at the time of publication,1977,many of the buildings shown in the book are already "Taken By The Wind"; and the rest are disappearing rapidly.
I enjoy reading novels of the Old West, and find this book is an excellent resource for viewing what these structures were really like. There are photographs depicting every type of architecture including;pioneer cabins, barns, liveries & stables, stone as well as wood structures, thatch as well as wood and metal roofs, silos, granneries, water towers, windmills, ethnic influence ,wagons and machinery, all the buildings found on the main streets of towns,,such as saloons, banks, hotels stores, law offices.fire stations, theatres, opera houses, blacksmith shops,Masonic and union halls, advertisements, gas stations and pumps ,barber shops, breweries, sawmills, elegant houses, turrets, jails, water mills, schools, churches, fisheries & canneries, railway stations & rolling stock, mine and ghost towns, industry emphemera,,and winds up appropriately with the final resting places of the people.
All of this is summed up with these words;
"One of the most persistent and endearing traits of the human animal is that if he is given the time and opportunity he will create something, somewhere,of enduring charm and beauty. Among most of the mining towns of the North American West, too soon built and too soon abandoned, there was and is little evidence of this instinct, but we are fortunite that some towns did survive--and some were born--in the splendid age of gingerbread ornamentation,or "Carpenter's Gothic", which flourished in the 1870's and 1880's."
Anyone interested in the way of life in the Old West will find this an excellent book.
Book Description
This third volume of the
Handbook of Development Economics employs rigorous theoretical and empirical frameworks. It focuses on policy and includes material from unpublished and not generally available sources. In particular, it covers analytical and policy issues arising from the collapse of the paradigm of development based on import-substituting-industrialization in most developing countries; and the demise of centrally planned economies of
Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. The volume also deals with the increasing recognition of the importance of micro behavioral responses to a range of incentives and unobserved factors both for analysis and for policy formulation.
It discusses the ongoing process of economic reforms in developing countries by reducing state involvement in the economy through privatization, opening up the economy much more to foreign trade and investment and allowing market forces and the private sector to guide resource allocation to a much greater extent. As well as updating developments on topics which were included in the earlier volumes, this Handbook also includes different topics, such as econometric and
other empirical modeling tools for development analysis and the role of technology in the development process.
As in the previous volumes of the series, the chapters in this Handbook provide self-contained surveys summarizing not only received knowledge but also recent developments. Each chapter is also a definitive source, reference and teaching supplement for use by researchers and advanced graduate students.

Indeed, we would like to encourage more academic research on the subject of financial regulation. So we welcome the increasing breadth and depth of work in this area, as reflected in these useful and thought provoking volumes.'
- Howard Davies, Financial Services Authority, London, UK This major four-volume collection will prove invaluable for lecturers, researchers and practitioners. The first volume covers the case for and against banking regulation, touching upon the design of an `optimal' regulatory framework. The second is concerned with deposit insurance, examining the arguments for and against its adoption and the problems encountered in its implementation. The material in the third volume deals with the vexed issue of capital adequacy assessment, including the roles played by capital and capital regulation and the G10 agreement. The final volume looks at the links between regulation and banking efficiency.

Book Description
Most people dream about someday owning a business, but dreams are often no match for the reality of the red tape and regulations involved in actually getting a business up and running. Small Time Operator shows the way. The most popular start-up guide ever written, it covers every aspect of small business ownership, including getting the proper permits and licenses; financing; choosing a location; creating an effective business plan; whether or not to incorporate; recordkeeping; setting up a bookkeeping system; hiring employees; insurance; federal, state, and local taxes; dealing with the IRS; franchises; doing business on the internet; and much more. This new edition has been updated to reflect current changes in the tax code and business management principles. Clearly written and fun to read, the book breaks down the seemingly complex process of opening a business into a simple step-by-step procedure — and helps turn the small business dream into reality.

Major league advice for small timers..........2007-08-06
This book's reputation proceeded it and I found it to be all I was expecting. It is thorough without getting lost in unnecessary detail, and when more is needed, or advice specific to a region or subject, he leaves the reader with clear guidance on where it can be found.
As a self-employed contractor, designer, millwork and furniture maker, my 37 years of experience has born out all his advice and I have made my share of - if not all - the mistakes he warns of. And done some of the right things. He comes as close as I've found so far to a source of advice on not just what's right to do, but what's practical, what's realistic and (even) what people can get away with.
I will be using "Small Time Operator" as an adjunct text for the cabinetshop management classes I teach at our local community college.
Good Basic Textbook.......2007-05-16
The book covers some business basics which makes it handy and useful for those venturing into new businesses but with limited background on how to start and run a business. The areas covered include the start-up process, marketing the business, bank accounts, bookkeeping, cash-flow forecasting, tax returns, business plans, legal entities, financing, import and export and insurance. The book is written in a simple and easy to follow style. Therefore I recommend it to budding entrepreneurs as it provides valuable advice that should help you start and nature a successful small business.
Those with some business background will likely find the book to be too basic and can therefore pass this one.
Good Information for the Entrepeneur.......2007-05-07
A great resource for anyone who is setting up or running a small business.
Has good practical information that the typical small business owner needs.
The umpteenth edition, still going strong.......2007-03-25
I've bought and given away several copies of previous editions of this book over the years. I just ordered this new edition because previous editions have been full of practical advice on setting up a business and giving it a good start. It's also a lot of fun to read, believe it or not! Check out reviews on amazon of the previous editions.

Not sure about newer versions..........2006-02-23
I have a version of this book that my father in law purchased in 1993. I know quite about about small business topics, and I learned so much of the little missing items from this book. My father-in-law has a million of these books on starting a small business, which he loaned to us when we started ours.
I quickly put the others down after scanning through a few chapters and not finding much information. All the books seem to be on choosing names, locations, and "Starting" a business. I wanted more information on "Running" our business, which is exactly what I found.
I scanned through a few pages, and what I read was so great that I went back and started from the beginning and read every word I saw. I truly found this book to be the most informative and realistic book out there.
I haven't purchased a newer version, because I still use mine. Infact I re-read many of the chapters every week, they are still valuable to me. This book sits right on top of my filing shelves.
I did, however, purchase the software from the bell springs website yesterday.
I use quickbooks and also a written record (using accrual and cash methods) and balance them out together. I really liked the forms he uses in the back of his book, they are so simple, yet really cover everything I need. That is why I purchased the software so I could use them.
My opinion of this book is very high, simply I beleive it is the best I have ever found. (By the way, Bell Springs Publishing website has a money back guarantee also) We run a service shop now, I hope to open a small retail shop soon, and I will be using this book for that as well. In fact I already am, to figure out how I will set up all my information on a different type of business.
Small Time Operator.......2004-07-01
"Small Time Operator" by Bernard B. Kamoroff makes you wonder if he ever made it big or just remained small. I agree this is not the bible of business practices. However, the info isn't all that bad. It just lacks real meat.
Not particularly helpful.......2004-05-27
There are better books on how to start and run a business. This one is long on words and short on useful, practical information. Reads more like an accountant trolling for business by harping on complications than a genuine self-help book.
I bought based on the recommendation of a (well-written) book on self-publishing. Wish I'd read Amazon's comments first and spent my money elsewhere.
Not a BIBLE but a decent start........2004-04-25
First of all, let me say that I do not agree with the five star reviews nor do I agree with the 1 star reviews. That said, I feel this book is smack in between and does offer some useful information, especially for the newbie to business.
Five stars reviewers are too generous and 1 star reviewers are way too critical.
Good book and worth a read.
