Laura Wexler presents an incisive analysis of how the first American female photojournalists contributed to a "domestic vision" that reinforced the imperialism and racism of turn-of-the-century America. These women photographers, white and middle class, constructed images of war disguised as peace through a mechanism Wexler calls the "averted eye," which had its origins in the private domain of family photography.

Wexler examines the work of Frances Benjamin Johnston, Gertrude K asebier, Alice Austen, the Gerhard sisters, and Jessie Tarbox Beals. The book includes more than 150 photographs taken between 1898 and 1904, such as photos Johnston took aboard Admiral Dewey's flagship as it returned home from conquering Manila, Austen's photos of immigrants at Ellis Island, and Beals's images of the St. Louis World's Fair of 1904.

In a groundbreaking approach to the study of photography, Wexler raises up these images as "texts" to be analyzed alongside other texts of the period for what they say about the discourses of power. Tender Violence is an important contribution not only to the fields of history of photography and gender studies but also to our growing understanding of U.S. imperialism during this period.

Power and art are not separate.......2002-09-25

Wexler writes clearly, skillfully interspersing history, sociology, and photography to argue that domesticity was some CREATED, not just "always there" in the US. Wexler especially emphasized the role of photography in supporting a discourse of white women's purity and black slave women's (or newly freed black women's) down-to-earth, animal nature. An excellent book for all students of art, social science, or history, this text can be used for undergraduates or graduate students.

Survey topics for 2001:

EM countries are reviewed to highlight those troublesome issues - EM Hot Spots - of import to the most savvy investor. The investor is provided with practical insights, accompanied by seasoned advice for sidestepping the many pitfalls. This year, a few custodians were less than pleased with developments in certain mature markets. Commentary on these countries is included as well.

Global Straight Through Processing (GSTP) has made very significant progress to date, achieving a number of milestones in a short time. What lies ahead is a series of major industry challenges, as viewed by the global custodians. Concern about the possibility of two diverging models for post trade processing was expressed, as a U.S. model, which addresses the industry change to T+1 settlements, differs from the global model. The survey discusses GSTP implementation challenges, expected benefits and implementation costs.

The international securities lending business had another boom year, with a 20% plus growth rate over last year. Although most custodians have lending business in over 30 countries, the mature countries tend to dominate the landscape. The European markets were strong, buoyed by the U.K. gilts market in 2000. The section is packed with charts and tables on current and past experiences by the world's largest players.

This year promises to bring the greatest roll-out of new, Internet-based products by global custodians. The survey touches on these new products, in addition to sorting-out a few exciting trends which are starting to unfold. The advent of e-commerce strategies deployed at the major banks may be the future platform for delivery of global custody services. A new, Internet-driven movement portends to rattle the competitive landscape in the not too distant future. The IT investments for the initiative are staggering.

A great way to learn a difficult subject!.......2000-02-14

I bought this book, along with three others in the series, for Winter semester classes. Although the class lasts through April, I finished the first book in December, then the other three in the next six weeks, because I need to know these programs immediately! Each step includes a picture of what the screen should look like. That made it very easy to tell if I did the steps right. I occasionally used the CD, which showed every step of every lesson, and actually talked me through them. Access is the hardest of the Office programs to learn, but I think I got a really good foundation with this book. I can now get one of those doorstop books and use it for reference, having the needed foundation. What a great way to learn Access. I highly recommend this series!

Some good information, but terrible reference.......2003-04-17

This book generally covers many topics well, but DO NOT use this as a reference for those tricky issues or poorly documented features. Often when programming with Access, you need to lookup specific features or functions that either are not covered in the online help or not generally known. Without fail, I never seem to find these sorts of topics covered in this book. If you are a beginner and want a general overview, then this book is fine. If you are a seasoned developer and need a reference book for Access programming, I would definately consider purchasing another book.

Excellent for a beginner.......2002-02-26

I mentor new VBA programmers and I have 4-6 VBA books in my library that I use for the code snippets. This book is the most useful by far for that task. The book has more code examples than any other book I have and the explainations are relatively complete. I have found a couple pieces of code that are incorrect or very poorly coded--but they are few and far between. The book covers a couple of things very well. DAO and ADO are covered in depth (these two chapters consume about 25% of the book) as well as providing good explainations of form and report events. This is a must have for the beginning programmer.

Learning procedural programming in Access.......2001-09-30

I am a clipperhead having to learn how to use access. My concern is to learn how to use access to do data conversion, manipulation, processing w/o much of the visual user interface. This applies to processing edi flat files, structuring collected data, ect.

This isn't a visual book. Just good old procedural programming, stuff that clipper was great for.

The book does a good job of showing how to manipulate a database at the non-visual level. As I spend more time with it, I will do a follow up. For a programmer trying to figure out how to do the backend, non user interface programming of an application, it gives you a start.
