Book Description

Traditionally, interior design focused all its energies on designing for the eye. In this lavishly illustrated large-format book, Catherine Bailly Dunne shows us how we can broaden the palette and definition of interior designing by thinking through the perspectives of touch, hearing, smell, and taste as well as vision. Beautiful colour photographs of the interiours of exceptional homes are used to show how one can use their own instincts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars all five senses is right!.......2004-09-21

Who would have thought that one could decorate their home to please the subtle smells, touch, taste, as well as sight and sound? I was enchanted by this book and its pictorial spreads were enthralling and inspiring.

4 out of 5 stars A Fresh Perspective.......2002-02-27

This book makes you look at ALL the ways in which you make your home comfortable. It definitely does NOT advocate clutter, or that everything should be textured - it specifically talks about balancing textures. Perhaps some of the photos seem a little fussy, but this isn't about replicating the photos. It's the kind of book that you use to inspire you, not to follow step-by-step projects. The section on touch makes me yearn for silks and wicker and nubbly cottons around me. The section on scent gave me the nudge I needed to buy a rose-scented sachet I've been thinking of buying for ages - and it's beautiful to sit at my computer and smell that. The section on hearing made me realise how much I enjoy hearing my neighbour's windchimes on breezy days - perhaps that's something I shall be looking into next. An inspiring book to pick up and leaf through... to make you realise that decorating isn't just about how your home looks. Any showhome can LOOK good, but it's the ones which feel and smell and sound good which will really attract your attention!

5 out of 5 stars A REFRESHINGLY DIFFERENT DECORATING BOOK.......2001-05-02

This is a wonderful book and handles decorating your home from a refreshing perspective. Decorating should not be just about the way the sofa looks next to the fireplace, but also how you feel when you touch the fabric, how the color of the room motivates you or relaxes you, even how the house smells, how the whole effects your comfort level. Our homes are our refuge from the outside world and should be very personal and unique to ourselves. Those who do not understand this concept should get one of Martha Stewart's insipid books. This book has taught me to look at my home as a reflection of myself. Just as I do not dress to please others, from now on I will decorate my home to please only me. New home owners out there, buy this book now!

5 out of 5 stars The quintessential guide to interior design. It's nifty!.......1999-06-22

I thought I had pretty good taste when it comes to spiffing up the ol' homestead. Catherine Bailly Dunne showed me how hopelessly inept I really am. Her sense of style is a force unto itself. Colors and textures come alive with her inventive, yet simple flourishes. This book is ideal for beautifying any home, from a one-bedroom rathole to a multi-gabled country estate. Hats off to the author. Catherine, you've really dunne it this time!

1 out of 5 stars This book is horribly designed (no pun intended).......1999-06-13

I'm not sure who this is suited for. I think Martha can give you bettter, easier and cheaper tips. I did like Bill Phillips, though.

      Book Description

The Garden District epitomizes the beauty and mystery of New Orleans; the stately residences and gardens of this historic area are known worldwide for their graciousness and ease.
The financial prosperity of nineteenth-century New Orleans, a center of commerce and culture, enabled wealthy newcomers with similar values and tastes to construct a neighborhood of opulent homes, creating a suburb with a unified style. This neighborhood-the Garden District-was situated along one of the first street railway lines in the country, and became one of the earliest commuter suburbs. It remains an enduring achievement of architectural and residential planning.
Southern Comfort details the magnificent architecture and planning of the Garden District. Through the histories of the developers, owners, architects, laborers, and craftspeople who shaped this district, the book creates a picture of a uniquely cosmopolitan city in the American South.
This title, first published in 1989 and long unavailable, has been carefully updated by the author. It includes 90 new color photographs, showing the brightly painted facades for which this neighborhood is famous, domestic interiors that have never been published, and restoration efforts that have occurred in the past decade.

      5 out of 5 stars GARDEN DISTRICT.......2007-02-04

This is a wonderful book on one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the country. It is a fascinating study of this singular district, the history is extremely interesting and the images are vivid. Visiting the Garden District is like going back in time, it is so well cared for and the residents are very protective of its history. As people mull over the future of New Orleans and wonder what makes this old city so special, and why its worth saving, they need to take a trip down to the Creasent City and walk the streets of the Garden District and see what real beauty is.

5 out of 5 stars The Big Easy in a big and easy historical way.......2006-02-26

This book is twice as expensive in New Orleans bookstores. Photos of historical people and places in the Big Easy. This was a nice follow up of my visit to New Orleans, but I'd recommend this for a pre-visit read.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Pictures.......2002-11-08

When I went to New Orleans, I only had time for a quick driving tour. This book allowed me to see what I missed, and learn more about the architecuaral styles that surround the area. The book has great info on the styles, and tells how they came to be and why. The iron work in the area is to be experienced! The charm of the homes in the Garden District are brilliantly displayed in this book.

      5 out of 5 stars beautiful photography.......1998-12-12

this republishing of the late 1980's version is a delicious remake made better by the new color photographs. Brantley and Brantley have out done themselves with this edition.

            Product Description

Miss Caroline Dorman was one of the premier female naturalists of the twentieth century American South, and a Professor at Louisiana Tech University. Her estate, Briarwood, is now a nature preserve. As a young teacher Caroline Dormon experienced the joy of walking through cathedral-like pine forests in the rolling Kisatchie Hills of North Louisiana. The inspiration of these giant trees and native Louisiana flora shaped her life for the rest of her days. Saving and preserving them became her magnificent obsession. Caroline's inspiration and education came from her father, a small town lawyer in Arcadia, Louisiana. The family owned a tract of timber, some of it longleaf virgin pine, which they called Briarwood. In this outdoor classroom Caroline's father taught her to know and love trees, plant materials and birds. A feature of Caroline's work became the propagating and hybridizing of native plants, with special emphasis on the Louisiana iris. Caroline Dormon was the first woman employed in forestry in the United States. Almost single-handedly she worked with Louisiana and U.S. Forest Service leaders to establish Kisatchie National Forest, comprised of 600,000 acres, stretching over seven parishes. As her influence spread, she lectured throughout the South to many organizations. Professional horticulturists and foresty leaders visited Briarwood for consultation with this dedicated conservationist. Caroline Dormon's pioneering work continues today through the inspiration she has given to professionals in her field and to thousands of others who have come to love the beauty of Louisiana woodlands and native flora. Miss Dorman's incredible life is documented in this biography by the gifted writer, Fran Holman Johnson.

In a society where trust is in short supply and democracy weak, the Mafia sells protection, a guarantee of safe conduct for parties to commercial transactions. Drawing on the confessions of eight Mafiosi, Diego Gambetta develops an elegant analysis of the economic and political role of the Sicilian Mafia.

                          5 out of 5 stars Mafia ®.......2007-09-05

What exactly is a mafia? What type of underworld association may rightfully assume the title? Can any criminal group organized along ethnic lines qualify? The answer is "No" according to Diego Gambetta. He argues that criminal activity and ethnicity alone do not justify use of the term; and the popularly held concept about what constitutes a mafia is based on broad assumption, and contains inaccuracies. Gambetta traces the social and economic origins of this much dramatized organization from the 1800s to the present. He establishes authenticity according to a more exacting set of criteria, and explains how the mafia is more than a collection of "clever psychopaths." It is an industry specializing in protection; a group of firms that possess `recognizable trademarks,' `means of identifying legitimate members;' and is successful in `thwarting imposters.' Not every group, therefore, may rightfully be designated as "mafia."

Gambetta documents extensively the history and facts surrounding one of the most successful crime cartels in history, and delves into its myths and mysteries. His account of the creation of such words as mafia, a literary creation actually applied externally, is illuminating. One source he quotes, Leopold Franchetti, reveals the label was originally applied to "a class of violent criminals ready and waiting for a name to define them." Upon reflection, the reader then imagines more examples of `externally applied' definitions: political parties are exceptionally good at conjuring up choice names for their opponents. I strongly doubt that the master of Hell bestowed the title, "Prince of Darkness" on himself. Even the sobriquet "G-men" was first created for the FBI, the mafia's unrelenting foe, by notorious gangster Machine Gun Kelly.

"The Sicilian Mafia" is excellent reading and a superb source of reference. It is marvelously objective in providing information, extensive examination and insightful, in-depth analysis, as it explores the phenomenon of modern-day, organized crime society.
