    Book Description

The first comprehensive monograph on Jo Coenen.

Dutch architect Jo Coenen is not only an architect, but also a city planner, university lecturer, artist, and, until very recently, the Dutch Government Architect. In this role he was responsible for highly important planning projects and was advisor to the government. In his architectural work, he made a name for himself with the construction of the renowned Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI) in Rotterdam, a striking office tower in Dusseldorf's Mediahafen, and Amsterdam's city library in Oosterdok-Eiland. His urban planning projects include the entire plans for the Vaillantlaan in the Hague, the former "Sphinx C ramique" grounds in Maastricht, and the master plan for the KNSM island in the eastern harbour area of Amsterdam, which attracted international attention. As Government Architect he composed a report "Designing the Netherlands", appealing for the protection of public space from the inconsiderate actions of investors and for the transformation of fragmented living spaces into coherent urban systems.

        Book Description

Assembled in honor of Eduard F. Sekler, Professor Emeritus of the History of Architecture at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, Form, Modernism, and History is a fitting tribute to a man who as architect, historian, and preservationist has been instrumental in restoring history to a prominent place in contemporary architectural theory and practice.

In twenty-two probing and original essays, distinguished scholars and designers--including architects Henry Cobb and Rafael Moneo--combine the insights of history, theory, and practice in order to reveal the evolution of design thought and methods and to interpret the relationship of architecture to its social, cultural, and political contexts.

                    Book Description

The book doesn't have any exercise materials to practice on, it mostly talks about tips instead of technics. It has plently of pictures on the back which would have been nice, if they draw all of it in steps and show me how.

                      Book Description

The Outer Banks of North Carolina have had a lively and sometimes lurid history going back four centuries. These barrier islands, frequently battered by storms and hurricanes, were the site of the first English colony in North America and figured prominently in the Civil War. The hundreds of shipwrecks off their shores have earned the Outer Banks a reputation as the 'Graveyard of the Atlantic.'

Rodney Barfield has assembled here more than 160 historic photographs and drawings, most of them never before published, to create a remarkable visual portrait of the Outer Banks' history and the people who lived it. Focusing especially on the nineteenth century but including some images from earlier and later periods, the book is a family album of life and work on the Banks. The photographs, accompanied by substantive captions and introductory text, document both well-known and obscure elements of the islands' past, including lighthouses, shipwrecks and rescue crews, fishing, whaling, porpoise hunting, boatbuilding, and home life.

5 out of 5 stars Good historical detail of everyday people of the area........1999-06-07

I have been curious about the people who have lived and worked on the Outer Banks in the past. They had a special kind of endurance and obvious love of their wonderful environment, which is apparently inherent in the current residents of the area. When I found this book, I couldn't wait to read it cover to cover. My anticipation was rewarded with a comprehensive look into the lives and livelihoods of the hard-working and family-oriented "Bankers". It is with admiration that I refer to this book again and again for a reminder of why the Outer Banks is such a great place.

5 out of 5 stars A rich portrait of life on North Carolina's barrier islands.......1999-01-28

This book, a gift from a friend, provides a sensitive portrait of the men and women who spent their lives on or at the edge of the sea. It chronicles their daily battles as well as the beauty and tranquillity that the islands provide. A factual presentation, the book illustrates the relationship of people and the sea from numerous viewpoints. While not written to be glamorous, there is a beauty and passion in the book that captivates and fascinates the reader. One finishes the book with a new viewpoint on those who make their life and living in and near the sea and a new appreciation for the hardships, dedication and passion that these men, women and children demonstrate. We can all take some life lessons from the pages of this handsome volume.

                      Book Description

"An innovative book for an innovative topic." Charles Hampden-Turner

Like the subject matter it covers, Clusters of Creativity is innovative and original. It breaks with popular interpretations of Silicon Valley and similar regions, which range from the hyperbolically laudatory to the contemptuously dismissive, and takes a critical, objective look at the lessons that these locations provide about innovation and entrepreneurship.

Readable, yet rigorous in its analyses, the book provides a practical and balanced set of perspectives on how the powers of business creativity are fostered and sustained. It focuses not so much on the generations of high technologies but on the motivations and strategies of business leaders who turn revolutionary innovations into commercial realities. Clusters of Creativity demystifies the many enigmas that surround two leading capitals of the modern global economy, providing insights on managing innovation and entrepreneurship that are both eye-opening and broadly applicable to all organizations and industries.

Clusters of Creativity will challenge assumptions, dispel myths, enlighten, inspire, and generally provoke thought. In an age where technology and hyperbole frequently go hand-in-hand, the book's well-founded insights are all the more refreshing and important.

"It is an old adage that ""fortune favours the prepared mind"", that in many cases the elements of a creativity synthesis just ""happened to be there"".  It is Koepp's valuable contribution that he assembles all such clustering dynamics and makes coherent ""the gale of creativity destruction"" that has puzzled us all.  An innovative book for an innovative topic.  Dr Charles Hampden-Turner, Cambridge University Every so often one is lucky enough to be at the center of the world while it still is the center of the world.  Being in Silicon Valley during the 1990s was certainly just that.  Such centers produce a flowering of creativity that can only occur when the air becomes so turbulent that ideas, which in normal times would just be fleeting fantasies, get up and fly.  Clusters of Creativity captures this anti-gravitational feeling perfectly.  Rich Gold, Former Director of RED, Xerox PARC "

5 out of 5 stars book highly recommended.......2003-09-05

While somewhat critical of Saxenian's "Regional Advantage" the author has presented an excellent case of how self-perception and mindset of people essentially influences decision-making, which in turn drives an innovative economy up or down.
It is a fascinating journey into the makings of both Silicon Valley and Silicon Fen. However, I would say that the author only reinforces Saxenians's conclusions that the culture and the value system shape the strength of an economy as much as technical expertise if not more.
The book was elegantly written while it touched the deep underlying dynamics that were responsible for the creation and ultimate degree of success these two regions achieved.
I would highly recommend it to everybody interested in regional development and business clustering.

                            Book Description

With full-service nationwide banking on the verge of becoming a reality in the U.S., here is a thoughtful analysis of how it emerged and what its effects will be. Dr. Rose is frankly skeptical. He sees advantages but he also predicts significant disadvantages, mainly in the form of possibly higher fees and reduced personal attention for consumers of banking services. His book provides the best summary available of the research findings to date and one of the best summaries of new federal interstate banking rules enacted by Congress and signed into law in 1994. This is an important book not only for executives engaged in government-relations work throughout the financial services industry, and for those engaged in marketing and strategic planning, but also for public policy people in the private and public sectors. Dr. Rose opens his book with an overview of the trend in U.S. banking towards a consolidated banking system similar to those in other industrialized nations, particularly Canada, Great Britain, and Germany. He identifies causes of this movement toward consolidation, attributable to governmental interventions and the exigencies of the private sector marketplace. He reviews the long history of federal and state restrictions against interstate banking and then explains how laws passed in the 1990s are permitting giant nationwide banking companies to emerge. What does this mean for the public, bankers, and investors? Less than what people think and have hoped for. Dr. Rose warns that many of the benefits expected from interstate banking will probably be nonexistent or at best meager. His book will certainly prove to be a vital resource for anyone involved in the banking industry and for those who influence it.

From the supplier: Nation's Bank and Bank of America are two of the larger banks to sign an agreement with insurance companies to support proposed legislation allowing banks to establish interstate branches but limiting the insurance business of banks. The American Bankers Association has not yet taken a position but the Independent Insurance Agents of America back the agreement. Although the new law would allow interstate banks to open branches across the states, state governments would retain the right to decide against the law within a three year period.
