    Book Description

Land Use Planning Made Plain is a practical guide for planners, administrators, politicians, developers, property owners, and the general public on how to make and implement land use decisions. It seeks to develop a set of coherent planning principles by drawing out useful and generally applicable elements from various systems and approaches.

Hok-Lin Leung's focus is on planning at the city level, and he has organized the text according to the logical sequence of plan-making: justifications for making a land use plan, a plan for plan-making, planning goals, information, analysis, synthesis, and implementation. He addresses major debates in land planning today, including controversial material, and concludes with suggestions on the qualifications and qualities of a land use planner. By encouraging a shared understanding of the purpose, analytic skills and substantive considerations of plan-making - as well as the ways and means of plan-implementation - this book helps the planner to become more responsible and responsive to the many issues surrounding land use and its important role in addressing human needs.

      Book Description

The face is the most important feature of a doll -- it is also the most challenging. So it is surprising that there is so little instruction available on creating doll faces. This book fills that void.

Author Patti Medaris Culea began her career in art as a portrait painter and she puts that experience to work when creating her doll faces. In this book, she shows readers a simple technique for easily creating faces using her step-by-step approach. She gives her tips for how to divide the face into quadrants, graft features together, and much more.

Every aspect of doll making is covered -- from the basics to detailed techniques for making the various faces to instructions for putting a pattern together. Readers will learn how to use watercolor pencils, acrylics, and fabric paints to color a face, how to create a face using collage techniques as well as stamping and beading, and tips for working with stretchy fabrics to create indented eyes, separate eyelids, and sculpted lips.

      5 out of 5 stars What fun!.......2007-06-03

This is the first book I was included in as an artist and Pattis patterns are so inspirational! Her dolls are beautiful and creative and a joy to make. I got to do the collage version and after several days of planning, I gave up and just played! That was the ticket!

Patti is an amazing dollmaker and I am lucky enough to live in San Diego where we share a home town doll club. I recommend, in fact, I insist (!) that all of you creative doll creators go right out and buy it! You wont be disapointed!

2 out of 5 stars Difficult to Follow.......2003-03-19

At first glance this book seems almost as simple as paint-by-number, but when trying to do the projects I found that the explanations were sketchy and the photographs didn't show every step. I'm not an absolute beginner with pastels but my attempts certainly didn't get anywhere near the projects shown, and I don't feel as thought I learned anything. It's nice to see what's possible, but it would be better to work with simpler projects that are explained in detail. I definitely don't recommend this book to anyone who is not already accomplished in oil painting if not pastels.

4 out of 5 stars Good Beginner to Intermediate Pastel Book.......2000-05-29

Beginner to Intermediate (and maybe even some advanced) pastelists will find this book useful for developing their own pastel painting skills. The book is divided into 3 major sections. 1 gives a brief history of pastels followed by explanations of the various types of pastels and surfaces. 2 is Learning from the Masters. 3 is Pastel Techniques.

In the second section Learning from the Masters each chapter begins with an in-depth critique of various masters of the past and explains how many of their effects were achieved and why they are considered masterpieces.

What is interesting is that most (though not all) of these masterpiece critiques are of oil paintings. The Master critiques focus on general concepts of what made this or that painting work. For example, in the first demonstration she critiques an atmospheric oil painting by J.M.W. Turner. After devoting a few pages to the Turner painting she then introduced a guest pastelist who demonstrated how they achieved a similar effect (in this example- atmospheric) with soft & hard pastels. I found the critiques of de la Tour and Degas particulary interesting.

Each painting also shows color swatches of pastel colors recommended if you wanted to copy one of the historical paintings or the guest artist's demonstration. The swatches are given instead of particular brand names and colors since these will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Beside the color swatches will be a box listing the techniques the guest artist uses and the page number to the third section of the book that gives a detailed discussion of the technique.

The critiques will have one page where the full painting is shown and an over-all discussion at the side. The next page will show the same painting on a smaller scale with a "points to watch" format with arrows pointing to particular areas of the painting that the author wants to emphasize. The third page will introduce the guest pastelist and show step-by-step how to achieve a similar goal with a pastel painting.

The final section of the book focuses on the various techniques. Effects such as mixing colors, broken color, combining charcoal and pastel, corrections, creating details and edges, feathering, hatching and cross-hatching, line strokes, side strokes, underpainting and wetbrushing. Actually I only listed a few of the techniques described in this section.

Over all this is a very good book if you are a beginning to intermediate pastelist. Even advanced pastelists might find it interesting since a large part of the book is devoted to critiquing and discussing master paintings. There are a wealth of photos demonstrating everything explained and an index in the back.

The sole reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is that there is almost no discussion or serious consideration given to oil pastels. I have used oil pastels for several years and am always disappointed at the poor attention given to this delightful medium.

For someone who wouldn't miss the lack of attention given to oil pastels then this book would probably rate a 5. Overall this is one of the better pastel books I've read and I refer to it constantly as I'm learning to paint with soft & hard pastels.

                  Book Description

This concise book, now available in paperback, has been developed from a series of lectures given to masters students and will serve as an excellent introduction to the principles of growth and development theory.

The author presents conventional wisdom with a critical eye and charts development economics as it has evolved from Adam Smith to `new' or endogenous growth theory. Thirlwall is critical of the latter, and its predecessor neo-classical growth theory, and tries to put back demand as a driving force in growth theory. He argues that in an open developing economy one of the major constraints is the availability of foreign exchange to pay for imports, so that export growth which relaxes a balance of payments constraint on demand becomes a crucial determinant of overall growth performance. Demand creating its own supply in a growth context, rather than the pre-Keynesian view of supply creating its own demand, provides an alternative framework to the neo-classical one for understanding the differential growth performance of nations.

This highly original book will be essential reading for all students and scholars of development and growth economics.

                        Book Description

Peter Rose focuses in this volume on a new and ongoing movement in banking--the rapid spread of banks and bank holding companies across state lines. As Rose notes at the outset, legislation to allow banks to cross state lines is now law in 46 states. While many analysts believe that full-service interstate banking will bring badly needed capital to struggling local economies and help stem the rising tide of savings and loan failures, there is growing concern in the regulatory community and among some bankers and consumer groups that this trend will only exacerbate current problems of excessive risk exposure in the banking industry. Rose evaluates these contending views exploring in detail interstate banking's potential benefits and costs and assessing the movement's future in an increasingly global society and volatile international economy. He concludes new federal and state policies that both protect the public interest and bring greater stability to the banking industry are necessary before interstate banking can fulfill the promises of its supporters. Among the critical issues Rose addresses are the ways in which leading banking organizations assess potential market areas, how these same organizations select particular banking institutions as targets for acquisition, and what changes in services and service pricing are likely in the wake of an interstate banking acquisition. He examines the special challenges and problems the interstate banking movement creates for federal and state regulatory authorities and considers what new federal and state legislation and regulation may be needed to deal with these problems. Arguing that for savings-investment channels to work well banks must benefit from full public confidence, Rose calls for the institution of measures such as frequent and thorough FDIC inspections, insurance fees tied to level of risk exposure, and full disclosure of bank finances. Numerous tables amplify points made in the text. Must reading for advanced courses in finance and banking, this book will also be of significant interest to regulators, policymakers and banking executives concerned about the potential impact of a widening trend toward interstate full-service banking.

In New Dynamics of Goal setting, the great Dr. Denis Waitley introduces the concept of FLEXTACTICS of which there are 10 Flextactic strategies:

                        1) Thrive on Risk as a part of life
                        2) Use your past to chart your future
                        3) Set your life-forming goals to keep on track
                        4) Set your life forming goals to keep on track
                        5) Let reality influence your goals
                        6) Turn obstacles into your advantage
                        7) Be selective to gain the most from today
                        8) Change your attitude toward work
                        9) Find goals that motivate yourself and others
                        10)Be flexible in your expectations
11)Set your new standards when you exceed your goals

Overall, a totally different approach to goal setting and achieving goals. Written back in the mid 90's to address the millions of jobs lost during Pres. Clintons administration where over 1/2 million jobs were lost and continued after his term was over.

To succeed in these time you have to be flexible and Waitleys FLEXTACTICS does just that.

4 out of 5 stars definitely a step in the right direction.......2000-02-23

As the world changes rapidly around us, Denis Waitley recommends, among others, a good old fashioned remedy: "Write your ideas on paper. Then review them frequently."

For years I've been looking for a one-stop-shopping technique for tying together goals, plans, personal philosophy. This book offers "flextactics," which are almost the answer for me. Not quite, though.

I really like the encouragement Mr. Waitley provides. The book is worthwhile for that reason alone. I also like his step-by-step flextactics instructions - in theory, at least. But I found that I could not get past even the first day's exercise. He suggests identifying your all consuming, driving life's purpose. Subsequent days' exercises build upon that life's purpose. I'm one of those people who can't quite identify the long term purpose, but who has plenty of energy in the short term, and even medium term.

I eventually gave up and just fell back to the simple technique of writing, writing, writing, and occasionally regrouping and rewriting. This process in itself has been remarkably useful.

So I guess you could say I exercised some of the book's core principles. I will revisit this book a year or two from now.

5 out of 5 stars Will make you believe 'you can do it'.......1999-12-05

.. and you will be able to 'do it' with this book's help. I certainly recommend this book to anyone who needs guidence and encouragement in setting lifetime goals and establishing them. I bought another copy for my brother, too. I wish I had read it earlier in my life.

4 out of 5 stars Flexible is the watchword for goal setting in today's arena........1999-01-04

Flextactics sounds like the perfect plan for our ever changing world. First copyrighted in 1993, this work takes the cookie cutter pieces of self help and puts a flexible spin on them that makes them more pliable and useful in this spin-on-a-dime changing society. The fact that most of the new jobs ten years from now probably haven't been invented yet, makes this a timely and insightful look into goal setting and coping with change.
