5 out of 5 stars History beautifully brought to life.......2003-07-07

If your love of beauty and history extends to architecture but your travel budget is limited, consider obtaining a copy of THE MAJESTY OF THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA.

Author Jim Fraiser and photographer West Freeman traveled the 200-mile length of the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta, the heart of of the realm of King Cotton, to assemble the text and illustrations for this handsome, informative little book. The result is replete with fascinating anecdotes about times long past and splendid pictures of the extraordinarily beautiful homes, churches and public buildings that stand as a monument to an era.

Beginning at Port Gibson, the "Gateway to the Delta," and the classic simplicity of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Messers Fraiser and Freeman trace the history of this diverse and scenic region in both the lives of its founders and the exquisite constructs they created. The text is filled with gossipy tidbits as well as less-familiar history, like the chandelier from the famous steamboat Robert E. Lee that hangs in Port Gibson's First Presbyterian Church and the tale of the ghost of owner John Bobb, murdered by Union soldiers, that purportedly still roams the flying-wing stairway and double-tiered galleries of McRaven in Vicksburg.

This book is for those whose hunger for beauty extends to that crafted by the hands of man. If it has a flaw, it is that the taste of these magnificent structures it provides leaves the reader hungry to sample them first-hand. Should one be fortunate enough to do that, they could do worse than to tuck their copy of THE MAJESTY OF THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA into their tote as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars As much a travel account as an architectural.......2002-08-06

Majesty Of The Mississippi Delta is as much a travel account as an architectural and art history of the homes, churches, and stores on the Mississippi Delta. Color photos of both interiors and exteriors are accompanied by quotes from historical documents and descriptions of each building. A rich history for those who enjoy architectural history in general and the Mississippi area in particular.

The Ronchamp Chapel is a boldly expressive free-form structure that says as much about enlightened patronage as it does about the genius of Le Corbusier, a seminal figure whose work usually celebrated pure rationality rather than the mystery and emotion on conspicuous display there. While the church hierarchy supported Corbu's poetic vision wholeheartedly, local inhabitants and bureaucrats at first hated this masterpiece enough to deny it water and electricity. Only when architectural tourists came in large enough numbers to bolster their economy did they relent. The chapel is just one of the modernist icons that preeminent architectural photographer Ezra Stoller documented in a career that spanned more than half a century. Now retired, Stoller has been reassembling his work for permanent (rather than periodical) publication. The Ronchamp Chapel is one of a series published by Princeton Architectural Press that presents individual buildings in depth in a small-size volume. The photographs are not only stunning, they have particular documentary value in that Stoller shot them when the buildings were new--in this case, 45 years ago.

The series has been designed for relative affordability, and its subjects are well chosen. Each volume includes a very brief preface by Stoller setting out his relationship to the building and a fairly short critical, historical, analytical essay. Buttressed by about a dozen endnotes, the essays occupy a middle ground between informal and scholarly writing. They are followed by 50 to 60 duotone photos and a few plan drawings. This is an expert look at an extraordinary building and well worth readers' serious attention. --John Pastier

      Book Description

The Building Blocks series presents icons of modern architecture as interpreted by the most significant architectural photographers of our time. The first four volumes feature the work of Ezra Stoller, whose photography has defined the way postwar architecture has been viewed by architects, historians, and the public at large. The buildings inaugurating this series--Eero Saarinen's TWA Terminal, Wallace Harrison's United Nations complex, Le Corbusier's Chapel at Ronchamp, and Paul Rudolph's Yale Art and Architecture Building--all have bold sculptural presences ideally suited to Stoller's unique vision. Each cloth-bound book in the series contains at least 80 pages of rich duotone images. Taken just after the completion of each project, these photographs provide a unique historical record of the buildings in use, documenting the people, fashions, and furnishings of the period. Through Stoller's photographs, we see these buildings the way the architects wanted us to know them. In the preface to each volume Stoller tells of his personal relationship with the architect of each project and recounts his experience photographing it. Brief introductions reveal the unique history of each building; also included are newly drawn plans.

      Book Description

Why do trends in human society sometimes change so suddenly?

The past three years show how quickly cultural shifts can occur, which makes answering the question above all the more urgent. In 1999, we were celebrating our heroes, the stock market had reached unprecedented heights - and many people believed that peace in the Middle East was at hand.

Three years later, the economy is weak, corporate executives are being thrown in jail, bloodletting between Israelis and Palestinians is daily ritual, India is testing missiles, North Korea is threatening the U.S. with nuclear destruction, the U.S. is at war with Iraq, European allies are deserting the U.S., a senator is calling for the resignation of the chairman of the Federal Reserve, and Americans are stocking supplies for terrorist attacks.

      What changed? And why?

Is it possible that all of these events flow from the same cause?

Best-selling author Robert Prechter's new two-book set, Socionomics: The Science of History and Social Prediction, proposes a startlingly fresh answer.

In Socionomics: The Science of History and Social Prediction, Robert Prechter spells a historical correlation between patterned shifts in social mood and their most sensitive register, the stock market. He also presents engaging studies correlating social mood trends to music, sports, corporate culture, peace, war and macroeconomic trends.

The new science of socionomics takes hundreds of popular notions about mass psychology, culture and the stock market and stands them on their heads.

Socionomics: The Science of History and Social Prediction includes a 2nd edition of the book that started it all, The Wave Principle of Human Social Behavior and the New Science of Socionomics as well as his new title, Pioneering Studies in Socionomics, an accessible collection of the essays that founded a new basis for social science.

Together, these books can transform your understanding of how our society works. It will change the way you read the newspaper. It will even show you how to predict news trends months in advance. Learn for yourself the science of social prediction. Order Prechter's two-book set today.

Prechters view is markets peaked in wave 5 in year 2000.
Never called the bottom in 2002, and stated the
high of year 2000 would not be surpassed.
Well 7 years later the DOW has indeed surpassed the year 2000 high!
High of 2000 was ~12000, today it is nearly ~14000 !

4 out of 5 stars A fascinating read from start to finish.......2006-12-10

This is a 2 volume set, and it is long. The first book is in my opinion the better of the two. It goes into great detail about Socionomics and makes a very convincing augment. This book has shown the light on many things, and it is not simply geared to the stock market. I do believe in Elliot Wave, but do not trade by it as I have found it impractical. It has been most useful in my dealings with groups or organizations, how people think and will act based on their perceptions, even if they are wrong. Mr. Prechter does an excellent job driving home the human herding concept. It makes reading about the political actions in the newspaper make so much more sense now, and should provide future insight for years to come.

The best way to really describe the first book is an academic text book one would read in college, and at times the reading gets to be a bit heavy. And I would be remiss in this review not to mention Phi, and how he has tied it into nearly every aspect of nature. Completely fascinating!!! It has been a year since I read these and I can still recall the lessons in this book.

The second book I never made it through, I got about half way and finally gave up. It is all short essays/articles backed with newspaper clippings trying to show how the first book knew what it was talking about. If you understood the first book, there is little point in re-reading the same material presented in a different manner. However, I guess if you did not get the first book, the second may appeal to you instead.

Overall, this is a good purchase, if solely for its ability to point out what people around you will do based on actions and events surrounding them, right or wrong.

      4 out of 5 stars A detailed, intelligent read.......2004-09-07

This is a two book set, a bit pricy, but I read it for months. It's a detailed, interesting book. The author could have cut it way down and made it just a quick overview, but I'm glad it was a more detailed version, like it is. I read the interview on First Voice (www.7to7.net) and thought Prechter sounded interesting. He's obviously very smart. He makes his living doing stock market analysis, and has written other books about the market, which doesn't interest me.
This book covers a lot of ground about how people interact. I've always wondered about the madness of crowds. This book gave me a completely different outlook on why people act the way they do and why I need to be aware of it.
Very good book. You'll keep this one for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding piece of work.......2004-06-09

Today, thanks to the genius of Robert Prechter, we have a chance of understanding the R.N. Elliott's own genius which was at root the discovery of the amazing Wave Principle almost 70 years ago when pencils and rulers were used instead of today's advanced computers. I am convinced that years and decades from now, when awareness and acceptance of the Elliott Wave Principle will increase to more appropriate levels, Robert Prechter's contribution in taking "the word out" and laying the foundation for one of the most revolutionary sciences ever, will be self-evidently immense.

"The Science of History and Social Prediction" is the most monumental piece of work you will have probably read in your entire life. It certainly fits this bill as far as I am concerned because it challenged everything I thought I knew in respect of understanding the social realm and because it helped refine and redefine my knowledge about financial markets and the importance of understanding societal impact of financial trends. It is absolutely obvious that the set is the result of an elaborated work that lasted many years for which I can only congratulate the author and his crew.

Bob Prechter's sustained effort to do justice to the theory he adores finally morphed into one outstandingly coherent explanation of how human social behavior is patterned and why is it important to be aware of where we stay in the overall social cycle at any one point in time. The lecture will be nothing but enjoyable thanks to Bob's fascinating style to put ideas on paper and to the brilliantly logic manner in which arguments are exposed along the way. It is a must read if you want to ever gain a competitive advantage in a surrounding social setting in which impulsive herding can occasionally be utterly destructive to your own self.

A big thanks to Bob for having shared with us his outstanding work!

        Book Description

The General Theory of Economic Efficiency, Volume1, authored by Stephan Hsiao Loh and published in 1999 in the U.S.A., presents a major advancement in economic theory within the last one hundred years. It is the first volume of a planned three-volume set. It is one of the most important economic theories developed in centuries.

It establishes a unified theory of value by combining the rational aspect of classic labor theory of value and the rational aspect of marginal theory of value. Based on this unified theory, Stephan Loh clarifies all the paradoxes produced in the past 150 years that challenge the classic labor theory of value.

The book also presents a number of analyses of irrational aspect of both classic theory of value and marginal theory of value. Using the unified theory of value as the foundation for further scientific inquiry, the author explores the complex relationship between economic efficiency and economic parameters such as interest rate, inflation rate, productivity growth rate, etc. For the first time in the history of economic thinking, a theory of economic efficiency is developed, linking the efficiency of an economy to its parameters. To demonstrate if this theory is supported or contradicted by real-world reality, the author presents an application example by using the U.S. economic data from 1960 to 1997. This example suggests that the U.S. economic productivity growth rate could have been 216% higher during the 1990s if the interest rate for the economy is set to the optimal interest rate level. This suggests that the theory of economic efficiency has a significant application value. What is more important to all economists is that this economic theory is universally applicable to all market economic systems regardless of ideology, culture, geographical location, time, economic development level, and political and moral value systems. Thus it has significant value to economic development and growth. It is important to all economists and policy makers in this regard.
