Book Description

Christopher Gray's engaging tales of historic Gotham locales transport readers back in time for a stroll through the streets of old New York. The noted architectural historian, who writes the popular "Streetscapes" column in The New York Times, here gathers 190 of the best-loved of those columns to captivate readers with his wealth of information about sites and buildings and the intriguing lives of the people connected to them.

From the Bridge Cafe (New York's oldest surviving bar) on Water Street to the Revolutionary War-era Morris-Jumel Mansion in upper Manhattan, Gray turns the spotlight on both obscure and familiar landmarks, and each of his witty, urbane essays is illustrated with at least one period photograph. Gray's vast enthusiasm and love for New York's architecture is evident in all that he writes, as is his concern for the preservation of the city's architectural treasures.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars New York, New York.......2005-12-23

I really enjoyed this book, the photos are so crisp and the text is quite informative. I am pleased that the vast majority of the buildings the author chose are still extant. After absorbing this book, you really appreciate the great architecture and workmanship of the past, the more current buildings in New York just don't measure up. The author does her research and it shows, I highly recommend this book to anyone with any interest in New York, it really is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Portraits of the city.......2005-04-22

Some books on the older buildings of New York City will give you the nuts and bolts about the structures: who designed it, who constructed it, when it was built, etc. And some photo books of old New York don't tell you anything at all. New York Times writer, Christopher Gray, with the assistance of the untiring researcher, Suzanne Braley, actually breathe life into these buildings. Not only do we learn the who and the when of a building's birth, but also the why and the how. Why were white brick apartment buildings so prominent at one time? How did the Winter Garden evolve from a huge stable? It's the little and, sometimes, epic anecdotes surrounding the buildings that fascinate Mr. Gray which, in turn, fascinate us. This is an indispensible book for anyone who loves the city, and who has ever stopped in front of a building and asked, "How did that ever get there?"

Rocco Dormarunno, author of THE FIVE POINTS

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful description of the BIG APPLE.......2004-04-12

As a New Yorker all I can say is this is the best book I've read about the city.

5 out of 5 stars What a wonderful pleasure!.......2003-05-23

A tremendous gift to anyone who loves the history of Manhattan. Gray writes well, his information is military in both precision and accuracy and the anecdotes alone are worth the price of the book.

My only wish is that one day, after he retires, a work of all his columns will be published. Perhaps the title "Gray's Anatomy" would suffice.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Source.......2000-12-20

This book is a good source for the architects and developers who are in business for an open air shopping complex. It gives ideas and examples from different aspects such as development, feasibility analysis and design elements. Case studies include description, development strategy and design features of the project. Probably one of the most useful chapters is the comparative analysis of the examined cases from the points of cost/blocks, land user areas, benefits and degree of success. On the other hand, I think this book should be in color.

The book is not about the Architecture of Old Mexico. Rather it is an assembly of old pictures and postcards with no story, only captions. A total , complete, and absolute lack of substance unless you like looking at old postcards.

The book should be called a picture and postcard collection of old Mexican scenes.

      Book Description

Streetscapes is the texture and fabric of a street, neighborhood, town or city. More than buildings and structures, it is the signage, the graphics, the billboards, the windows, the color and lighting, and the landscaping of the street.

In Streetscapes you'll see how architects, designers, sculptors, painters, masons and metal molders contribute to the streetscapes as do graphic artists, sign painters and makers, neon blowers and benders, lighting technicians, landscapers and gardeners.

Streetscapes features 80 different projects with 300 color photos of streets formed over years of building and rebuilding as well as newly created "instant" neighborhoods of hotel/resort complexes, malls, and shopping and entertainment centers.

The book is edited by Martin M. Pegler who has authored many bestselling books on architecture, visual merchandising and store layout and design.

            Book Description

Street Kids and Streetscapes: Panhandling, Politics, and Prophecies explores the experience of kids living on the street. It is an original, insightful, and provocative hermeneutic examination of street kids' participation in panhandling and the complexities that emerge as various economic, political, and social values converge and conflict in the urban landscape. This book illuminates how panhandling acts as the embodiment of the experiences of street life for kids as well as how the streetscape functions as the interface between street kids and the mainstream. Investigating the geographies where various meanings are connected to living in the margins, on the brink, as the "other," this book also explores kids' visions for the future and invites us to re-imagine how our lives are connected to each other, to them, and to the place we call "the street."

This is a very thurough book, with detailed information about each photomontage appearing in AIZ by John Heartfield. The book seems to be the first to provide translations of the German text on each AIZ, and offers some, but not always, enough information about each work by putting it in the historical context it originally appeared.

If you're studying Heartfield, this book is well worth your time.

                Book Description

This book argues that there is no single best institutional arrangement for organizing modern societies. Therefore, the market should not be considered the ideal and universal arrangement for coordinating economic activity. Instead, the editors argue, the economic institutions of capitalism exhibit a large variety of objectives and tools that complement each other and can not work in isolation. The various chapters of the book ask what logics and functions institutions follow and why they emerge, mature and persist in the forms they do.

                5 out of 5 stars great.......2000-01-08

I have looked at a series of good books on social embedding of economic practices but I kept and am reading only this one. I am interested in the concept in order to apply it to business practices and software development in periphery countries and I needed a broader framework. The book is very clearly written. It practically reads like a novel, if this is something you are interested in. The models in the introductory section diagram constructs that were previously hard for me to pull together coherently. I haven't finished reading the individual author contributions but after the two introductory papers by the editors I have high expectations.

The author examines the evolution of central bank cooperation and the international dimensions of national policies in the post--World War I reconstruction. The tensions between the demands set by the workings of the global monetary regime and the need for long term structural adjustment of a peripheral economy is one of the central themes of the volume.

                        Book Description

With general discussions from focused case studies, and academic and popular sources, Exchanges engages students and teachers in an analysis of consumer culture. Through readings that explore the intersection between consumerism and key themes-such as group and personal identity, education, entertainment, and place-the book documents the social space we inhabit. Pre-writing exercises, group work, and writing assignments involving Internet research explore consumer culture and illustrate how human beings are consumers, biologically and socially. For anyone interested in consumer culture.

                        Book Description

This text is a guide to critical thinking and composition courses. It covers just the basics of critical thinking using an acronym called TCDR (Topic, Class, Description, Relevance). The text grounds the student in the basics of the technique and uses exercises to drive lessons home. It also shows students how to use critical thinking across the curriculum. In addition, the new Part Three covers critical thinking in relation to using new computer technology. This book can be used as a main text or a supplement.

This book teaches improved reading comprehension, and the ability to answer exam questions based on that. Identification of the higher-order category to which a topic belongs is a critical metacognitive skill. The book teaches and exercises basic metacognition very well without ever naming it. Identification of the relevance of a topic is fuzzy business however. It requires and assumes that the student is actually motivated to build a knowledge schema, which alas, is not usually the case.Standard generic motives are assumed (e.g., people want food, comfort and happiness) to ground "relevance." After "Part I" the first 42 pages, the rest of the book is mind-numbing repetition. Evaluation is never addressed: it is assumed that the material presented should just be accepted as given. That may be okay for beginners. This would be an excellent exercise book for high school students or even bright junior-high students. For college level it would be remedial, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Critical Thinking Made Accessible.......2000-05-17

This book is short, but has high impact on the students. I used it in my college level Critical Thinking course. The greatest feature of the book is that it uses samples from actual text books across the university curriculum. The simple technique of identifying topic, class, relevance and description of a body of information provides an excellent framework for a beginning critical thinker. I used the text in a 12 day /complete semester course and had some excellent teaching-learning moments in the classroom working with the material.

                        An excellent buy.

                            1 out of 5 stars Staggeringly Inept!.......2001-07-16

NLP has a lot to offer in the field of education and training, and in the right hands this could have been an outstanding book. Unfortunately, these were all too obviously NOT the right hands.

My first doubts regarding the book were aroused by the cover blurb statement:

"For the first time NLP and Training methods are brought together in a well-researched, easy-to-read practical handbook."
Excuse me? "For the first time..."? I don't think so!
The Effective Delivery... wasn't published until 1997, which leaves it some way behind front runners such as "Training with NLP" (1994) and "The Excellent Trainer" (1996).

I was also unimpressed with the claim that the is "well-researched"? By whom? Apart from the sections on learning styles and humour, almost every single one of the references to scientific studies is mirrored in the bibliography of "The Learning Brain" (Eric Jensen, 1994). Is it pure coincidence that Garratt only acknowledges Jensen as his source in those cases where Jensen himself hasn't given a detailed reference?

Thirdly, I'm also extremely wary of anyone who claims to be concerned about people yet describes employees as HR (Human Resources!). This is a euphemism born in the same maternity ward as "down-sizing", "business process re-engineering" and the rest of the jargon of the early 90s designed to make it emotionally easier for managers to announce mass firings, sorry - major redundancy programmes.

To be quite blunt, the book seems to be based on the assumption that if you make enough of the "right noises" some of it is bound to make sense. Not exactly of the kind of 'elegant' solution that NLP is intended to produce, and certainly not a very impressive demonstration of the skills the book purports to teach.

Not surprisingly, then, the book frequently makes exactly the kind of mistakes that any experienced and skilled trainer (regardless of their knowledge of NLP) would avoid like the plague. For example:

                            - The intended audience for the book is never specified
                            - NLP jargon is almost always introduced without explanation. Indeed, on one notable occasion the author goes so far as to say, in so many words: 'You won't understand this but I'm going to tell you anyway'!
                            - The reader is frequently instructed to do things they obviously cannot do (e.g. an exercise that includes the instruction to "Use all the available NLP techniques..." when not one technique has yet been described)
                            - Many of the alleged explanations don't actually explain anything at all unless you already know enough NLP not to need the explanation.

As to the way that the book covers specific aspects of NLP:

                            - There is one brief reference to 'closure', but key skills like nested metaphors/nested loops are never mentioned, let alone explained
                            - On the subject of meta programs, 'convincer modes' are only mentioned as an afterthought (described as 'convincer patterns'), and 'convincer channels' aren't mentioned at all!
                            - The text regularly features examples of negative re-inforcement such as "This is actually harder than it sounds" ...
                            - ... and even the basic skill of framing instructions in the positive ("Do do abc") rather than the negative ("Don't do xyz") seems to be a skill too advanced to be included in this book. etc., etc.

One further criticism concerns the incredibly high rate of redundancy in the text. Apparently working on the basis of "tell them what you're going to tell them; tell them; then tell them what you've told them", great chunks of the text are repeated both in the so-called "exercises" AND in the chapter summaries.
On an actual training course this approach makes sense. In a book, where the reader can backtrack whenever they want, and as often as they want, this simply means that the basic information accounts for as little as 50% of the total text - if that.

So my difficulty in recommending this book can be summed up quite simply:

If you are a trainer with little or no previous knowledge of NLP then this book is so poorly presented it is more likely to confuse than enlighten.
And if you already have a reasonable grounding in NLP, this text will tell you nothing you don't already know.

In the final analysis, when compared with an alternative, such as O'Connor and Seymour's excellent "Training with NLP" this book comes across as amateurish, and vastly overpriced (even in the cheaper paperback format).

4 out of 5 stars A good resource for NLPers.......2001-05-08

The book seems to aim at anyone giving training, even those without any NLP (Neuro-linguistic Programming) background. It must have been a daunting challenge for Ted Garratt to condense so much NLP Practitioner and Master Practitioner level material into the book, with additional related resources, such as learning styles, humour, Eric Jensen's brain-based learning... The content is very rich. Those with a fair amount of background in NLP already can use this book for revision and they'll find many examples of how NLP can be applied in training. I still wish there could be more examples, and even cartoons and a much more lively editing format. For the NLP illiterates, I'd not recommend this book till they get other introductions first, like David Molden's books.

                            4 out of 5 stars A good practical guide to NLP-enhanced training.......2001-01-19

Are you a trainer or do you need to train people in your profession? NLP, Neuro Linguistic Programming, can be a great help to understanding how your audience is learning and how you can better help them absorb the subject material.

Mr. Garrat's book contains a lot of good NLP techniques for gauging and reaching your clients and examples of how to use those techniques in a training environment. Your clients will get more out of every training session and retain more of what they've learned in the long run.

If you're a trainer and you want to do the best for your clients, then this is definitely a book for you. If you want an overall introduction to NLP for more general application, take a look for 'Mindworks', another excellent book...

Ross endorses the U.S. Government Accounting Office's definition of a sweatshop as "a business that regularly violates both wage or child labor and safety or health laws." Employing that definition, he concludes that there are about a quarter million sweatshop workers in the United States. Many are immigrants in the apparel industry.

He shows that sweatshops were rampant in the U.S. economy at the beginning of the twentieth century. As a result of the 1937 Fair Labor Standards Act, they declined greatly from the 1940s to the 1970s. But then a confluence of factors--including globalization and industrial deregulation--resulted in the resurgence of sweatshop employment in the 1980s that has continued to today.

He blames the international expansion of sweatshops on deregulated global capitalism that has produced a competitive race to the bottom among low wage countries. The last part of the book focus on the anti sweatshop movement and the development of effective labor standards.

4 out of 5 stars an impassioned plea, at least empassioned for an academic.......2005-03-30

ross's 337 pages is seemingly daunting with charts, statistics, historical and conceptual overview, until you read it. it is very accessible even for someone like me who is a new comer to the issue. it is written simply and non-technically. i didn't know anything, not really, about sweat shops. but from the beginning ross takes on a very personal approach by stating his reasons for writing this book - his parents were garment factory workers!

he doesn't blame the re-introduction of sweatshops in the states and around the world on a single issue like global capitalism, which he does cite as the greatest contributor to it, but maps out a complex web of lack of uninization, lack of law-enforcement, and political philosophies.
it is an extensively researched book that has helped me to understand the scope and the nature of the problem, that is violation of human dignity through unethical practice of power.

the title is a bit misleading. it doesn't have much to do about the asthetics, marketing, or the cultural psychology of fashion. fashion is used in much more literal way.
