Breathtaking Lush Roman Interiors.......2003-12-14
The interiors of the various Palazzi and Villas of Rome are often one of the great unseen sights of this ancient city. These ancient Roman mansions are often breathtaking inside and quite unlike what you will find in the stately homes other countries such as England or France. In many cases the artists have taken whole rooms and turned them into one great 3 dimensional canvas showing scenes from mythology, history and nature.
This book is filled with wonderful colour photographs of the exteriors and interiors of various Roman Palazzi, covering many of the better known publicly owned buildings and some that are still privately owned. We get to see such places as The Vatican Palace, Palazzi Massimo, Villa Farnesina, Villa Madama, Palazzo Altemps and Palazzo Colonna just to name a random few in the book.
If you have any interest in the Italy of old or interior design this book is a must. You get a glimpse of the great Italian genius for frescoed interiors and a way of life for the very rich in the past that will never be repeated. There is much more to see in Rome than the ancient ruins and this book gives you a glimpse of some of those treasures and will leave you stunned with some of the wonderful beauty of some of these palaces.

The Second Adventure of a Good Team!.......2006-07-26
The late Isaac Asimov (1920 - 1992) is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi writers. He is of the old "hard sci-fi" school that populated the `50s and a successful member of that community by the way.
"El Sol Desnudo" ("The Naked Sun") has been translated to Spanish more than once. Unfortunately no detail of this edition is given, yet if you are a Spanish reader (and sci-fi fan) give this book a try.
This story is the second step in the long friendship between the earthling New York detective Elijah Baley and the robot detective R. Daneel Olivaw. You don't need to read "The Caves of Steel" to understand this one, it is almost a stand alone book.
Situated in a far future Earth, Humankind has divided into Spacers who dwell scattered in fifty worlds (and are the rich & advanced society) and Earthlings that remain in the Mother World, inhabiting overcrowded underground cities. Both groups distrust and despise each other.
A murder occurred in Solaria an Outer World. Elijah is put in charge of the investigation due to his success in the previous investigation.
Once again he will team with R. Daneel.
Here different phobias interact conditioning the development of the events.
Bailey is terrorized to be outside of he caves. From that fact derives the title of the novel as the Naked Sun is almost unbearable to stand for him.
The Solarians avoid direct contact with other humans. They interact thru holographic system and are surrounded and served by robots that do not look like humans.
In this isolation context murder is very difficult to commit. Nevertheless when committed is yet more difficult to solve. Well that is the task of our heroes!
On this background Asimov, once again, construct a many layered novel. At one level is a classical detective's story at another one a study on alien cultures interacting. In yet another level is psychological approach to phobias.
In a classical Asimovan way, each chapter introduces new elements and characters to the action until at last everything squares to a satisfactory ending.
Both partners will continue their adventures and mystery solving in "Robots of Dawn". R. Daneel will resurface at the closing volumes of the "Foundation" saga.
One more detail about this novel, the author after writing it stopped writing sci-fi novel for almost fifteen years, dedicating his efforts to write non-fiction on several subjects as physics, history and paleontology amongst others.
Enjoy the last of Asimov's "Golden Age" works!

Description:
Studying the relation between equity market liberalization and imports of capital goods, we examine one channel through which international financial integration can promote growth. For the period 1980-1997, we find that after controlling for other policies and fundamentals, stock market liberalizations are associated with a significant increase in the share of imports of machinery and equipment. We hypothesize this can be attributed to the consequences of financial integration, which allows access to foreign capital, and provide evidence consistent with this channel. Our results suggest that increased access to international capital allows countries to enjoy the benefits embodied in capital goods.

Description:
We show that equity market liberalizations, on average, lead to a 1% increase in annual real economic growth. The effect is robust to alternative definitions of liberalization and does not reflect variation in the world business cycle. The effect also remains intact when an exogenous measure of growth opportunities is included in the regression. We find that capital account liberalization also plays a role in future economic growth, but, importantly, it does not subsume the contribution of equity market liberalizations. Other simultaneous reforms only partially account for the equity market liberalization effect. Finally, the largest growth response occurs in countries with high-quality institutions.

Book Description
This book brings together the papers presented at a seminar held in Beijing, China, in August 1995 and sponsored jointly by the IMF's Monetary and Exchange Affairs Department and the People's Bank of China. The papers were written by central bankers from China, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, and Turkey. The Chinese authorities were specifically interested in learning more about the Italian and Turkish models of interbank markets and in the experiences of neighboring Asian countries with interest rate liberalization. The U.S. experience was also presented, and the introduction to the book draws policy lessons from the experiences presented at the seminar.

This paper evaluates the quantitative impact of capital liberalization on the taxation structure and welfare of the liberalizing countries when governments conduct fiscal policy optimally but without commitment (time-consistent policies). The transition from a regime of capital autarky to a regime of free mobility leads to a decrease in the long-term tax rate on capital of 13 percent and an increase in the tax rate on labor of 2 percent. As a consequence of this taxation shift, welfare increases by about 1 percent. The reduction in capital taxation induced by capital market liberalization is welfare improving because, in the absence of capital mobility, the time-consistent policies over-tax capital.

Between World War I and World War II, African Americans' quest for civil rights took on a more aggressive character as a new group of black activists challenged the politics of civility traditionally embraced by old-guard leaders in favor of a more forceful protest strategy. Beth Tompkins Bates traces the rise of this new protest politics--which was grounded in making demands and backing them up with collective action--by focusing on the struggle of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) to form a union in Chicago, headquarters of the Pullman Company.
Bates shows how the BSCP overcame initial opposition from most of Chicago's black leaders by linking its union message with the broader social movement for racial equality. As members of BSCP protest networks mobilized the black community around the quest for manhood rights and economic freedom, they broke down resistance to organized labor even as they expanded the boundaries of citizenship to include equal economic opportunity. By the mid-1930s, BSCP protest networks gained platforms at the national level, fusing Brotherhood activities first with those of the National Negro Congress and later with the March on Washington Movement. Lessons learned during this era guided the next generation of activists, who carried the black freedom struggle forward after World War II.
