Book Description
Expanded and updated for this English-language translation, this book offers the first history of women in ancient Greece and Rome to be written from a legal perspective. Cantarella demonstrates how literary, anecdotal. and judicial sources can and cannot be used to discover that Greek and Roman men thought about women.

Very interesting but boring........2004-01-09
Pandora's Daughters is a very interesting but boring book. As only a freshman in college I did not fully understand a lot of the terms the book used which made it seem unappealing. I learned quite a bit about women in Greco-Roman society when I read this book. If a person wanted to know about anything women did back then this is the book to read. It offers information ranging from family life to homosexuality among females and males. The most talked about issue in this book was the equality of women. I found out that there was never a time when women where equal to men except for a few brief periods in history. Even though a female wrote the book, she was not too biased, but liked to through her opinon in on alot of the material. The time period in which this book mainly deals with, is from about 500 b.c. to 600 a.d. The book ends around the reign of Justinian. The book is split into two parts. One part deals with the Greek world while the other deals with the Roman world. When reading the Greek part of the book I found a lot of mythology tied into society. It seems that a lot of the information we base on Greek society either comes from the works of Homer, vases, or from mythology. What I learned from this book is that the Greeks based their everyday lives from what they believed about their Gods just like what many religions do today with their God or Gods. I was stunned about some of the things Greek and Roman people did back then. If one was to read the book then they could read about some of the interesting things that happened. Even though I said the book was boring, it is well worth reading. I recommend it.
interesting but biased collection.......2000-05-17
This collection of articles by some of the leading scholars on women in antiquity discusses a wide range of topics and covers a good deal of time. However, I got the impression that each scholar shares similar biases, that women were viewed negatively by their society. While this may or may not be true, it would have been nice to have this view proved and not merely assumed.

Book Description
Spotlighting superb examples of classical Greek art together with recent findings in anthropology, social history, psychology, classics, and classical archaeology, Pandora offers a multi-faceted look at women in myth, ritual, and daily life in classical Greece. In this catalogue, which was written to accompany an international traveling exhibition organized by the Walters Art Gallery, Ellen Reeder turns to classical Greek marbles, bronzes, terracottas, and vases to help illustrate the ways in which women were perceived and how they lived. The discussion is enhanced through interpretive essays written for this catalogue by a group of eminent classicists and historians. Reeder finds a particular emphasis on myths dealing with the unmarried maiden and the difficulty of the transition to marriage and motherhood--as exemplified in the stories of Danae, Thetis, Atalanta, and Amymone. She also explores images of containers and untamed animals as metaphors for women; rituals involving women, such as the wedding and the cult of the Little Bears at Brauron; the character and cult of goddesses; and the close association of women with textiles. The catalogue contains interpretive essays by Sally Humphreys, Mary Lefkowitz, Franois Lissarrague, John Oakley, Margot Schmidt, H. A. Shapiro, Christiane Sourvinou- Inwood, Andrew Stewart, and Froma Zeitlin. The examples of art are drawn from more than fifty collections in fourteen countries and feature both familiar masterpieces and previously inaccessible works.

All the prints of America's most brilliant draftsman--and wittiest artist.
Book Description
Surveys the territory of neglected "garage sale" records (mostly from the '50s-'70s). Genres examined include: "easy listening," "exotica," "celebrity." Also recordings by (singing) cops, (polka-playing) priests, undertakers, religious ventriloquists, astronauts, opera-singing parrots, beatnik & hippie records, and gospel by blind teenagers with bouffant hairdos.
Customer Reviews:
I love this book.......2003-01-31
If you're into discovering strange records this is definitely a book to read. The book is separated into chapters. Some are dedicated to musicians and others are to individual record collectors, which are amusing. It gives them the chance to talk about the kooky records they've discovered. There's a nice chapter dedicated to Yma Sumac, which taught me things I didn't know. Apparently she had a concert in 1987, too bad I was only four. She sums up her career rather nicely and expresses the problem she had at her comeback. "I can't sing with just two musicians!"
ESSENTIAL!.......2002-10-17
This is the definitive book on thrift store music finds. Of course, because of its publication it's become increasingly difficult to make good thrift scores since it's opened up the field to many more collectors. But at least we've still got ebay! If the Velvet Underground can lay claim to launching 1000 bands, then the "Incredibly Strange Music" series is responsible for launching thousands of record collections.
The In Sounds From Way Out.......2000-08-03
After their popular "Incredibly Strange Films" book, the Re/Search team shifts their focus to music, specifically to fringe genres represented primarily by forgotten vinyl releases of the past. Interviewing assorted individuals, both music lovers and cult stars alike, V.Vale and Andrea Juno explore their record collections and gather anecdotes about beloved artists, treasured finds, and favorite album covers. In the first volume, Ivy and Lux of The Cramps recall their discovery of rockabilly and garage rock through thrift store scavenging, and members of the Phantom Surfers discuss surf and hot rod music, monster party albums, and Beatles knockoffs. Brian and Stuart of San Francisco's Amok Books talk about lounge and exotica music (Les Baxter, Arthur Lymann, Korla Pandit), and the founders of Norton Records detail the strange careers of Hasil Adkins and Esquerita. There's also chats with Eartha Kitt, exotica legend Martin Denny, and Jean Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley on their work both together and solo. Throughout the pages are hundreds of B&W photos and images of classic retro album covers. A companion CD was released featuring selections from some of the records covered. These books are an excellent read for those drawn to the bizarre, the shameless, and the ridiculous in music history. These are the unsung artists who never get mentioned in traditional music guides. Definitely recommended.
Strange book for strange collectors!.......2000-05-20
This book was good therapy- it was reasuring to find that there were many people out there like me that spent a great deal of their spare time combing thriftstores and yardsales to find Martin Deny albums or twisted versions of Beatles tunes sung by washed up celebrities.
Here's a simple test to see if you'd like this book: you're at the local thrift store when from the corner of your eye you see a record of Buddy Hacket singing favorite Yiddish songs. Do you...
A)keep looking for your Partrige Family lunchpail that your mother gave away 18 years ago.
B)Break into a cold sweat and lunge for the record with trembling hands.
If your answer is B maybe you should check out this book.
Far out, baby!.......1999-04-09
This book mostly consists of interviews with people discussing their unusual record collections. If that sounds like your bag, here it is. Of course, I dug it.
Book Description
Changes in the world economic climate have fundamentally altered not only the way products are created, but also the way businesses form and thrive. Large organizations once grew by swallowing whole the smaller companies with which they worked. Now, growth for both large and small companies is fostered and nurtured by strategic alliances.
This timely book illustrates five types of strategic alliances and how to structure them to achieve the goals of the component companies. Drawing from industries such as communications, healthcare, appliances, and defense, the book covers:
* How to determine the right type of alliance, and structure it to meet each company's stated goals * Sharing knowledge and building inter-company teams * Successfully ending an alliance
Filled with sample legal documents and agreements, frameworks and guidelines, the book is an essential resource for companies considering strategic alliances.
Customer Reviews:
The coming wave of alliances.......2002-04-26
This book is awesome! It represents a senior executive view on alliances, yet provides a step-by-step process to lead and manage alliances. With the conditions of the global economy dictating "Adaptive" enterprises, companies will be heavily relying on alliances to extend their core competency reach. This book provides the insights to successfully execute alliances - something that only the best of companies are doing today. It is a must read for anyone involved with alliances.
The Art of Partnering Effectively and Profitably.......2002-04-10
With Jeff Hook, Fred A. Kuglin makes a practical analysis about the conclusion and management of alliances during their lifecycle. Kuglin provides a framework to determine the need for an alliance that on its turn provides a roadmap to determine what type of alliances makes sense. Kuglin gives his readers a useful outline to draft the letter of intent, definitive alliance agreement, alliance business plan, and non-disclosure agreement. Each of these outlines is particularly useful for his readers who have already had the opportunity to take an in-depth look at these documents. To his credit, Kuglin repeatedly emphasizes the importance of involving internal and/or external counsels in drafting these documents from the beginning. Kuglin shares his experience with his readers about the working of alliances in different industries such as aeronautics, transportation, and telecommunications. Furthermore, Kuglin provides a roadmap that allows his audience to reassess the validity of keeping an alliance alive over time or not. Knowing when to disband/adapt an existing alliance is as important as making a new alliance. Finally, Kuglin builds on his expertise to define the critical success factors in establishing alliances and uses both General Electric and Cisco Systems of his "Hall of Fame" to illustrate them. In a second edition of Strategic Alliances, Kuglin could perhaps further elaborate on the first mover advantage in making an alliance or not. In their excellent Will and Vision, Gerard J. Tellis and Peter N. Golder debunk the myth of the first mover advantage by demonstrating that pioneers are rarely rewarded for their efforts at the end of the day. Is this empirical observation of both Tellis and Golder also true for the conclusion and management of alliances over their lifetime?
Book Description
The Foundation of Paul Samuelson's Revealed Preference Theory was originally published over two decades ago and is widely viewed as a classic within the philosophy of economics and a tour de force against revealed preference. The book critically examined the research programme carried out by the Nobel Prize winner Paul Samuelson on the revealed preference approach to the theory of consumer behavior as well as challenging two essential premises; firstly that the programme has been completed and secondly that the various contributions of Samuelson are mutually consistent.
This text contains a new preface by Wong, in which he provides a detailed insight into the origins of his pioneering text, and a new introduction from Philip Mirowski, analyzing the impact The foundation of Paul Samuelson's Revealed preference Theory has had on the discipline of economics as well as explaining why it remains core reading for economists today.
This defining statement of economic method will beof interest to economists everywhere.

What is the role of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation in relation to private sector political risk insurers and financial institutions supporting the flow of foreign direct investment to emerging markets? This study provides an assessment of OPIC's various missions as a promoter of development, supporter of labor rights, protector of living standards in the United States, and advocate of environmental standards around the world. Drawing on the most recent evidence on the relationship between foreign direct investment and development and the impact of outward investment on the home economy, this volume outlines a series of reforms that can make OPIC a more effective force in securing the benefits--and avoiding the hazards--of globalization in today`s economy.

Customer Reviews:
good reference book.......2007-10-19
I ordered this book for one of my technical writing classes and was/am very satisfied with it. Great reference book for all English majors, or anyone wanting to better their use of the English language. Highly recommended.
Nice general guide but little else.......2007-09-27
I purchased this book online while doing a massive repair job on a series of Engineering Manuals that were filled with writing errors and confusing information. This book is more like a handy dandy thesaurus but for real technical writing, it is virtually uselesss. The Microsoft Word Help Index has better examples. I found it to be confusing and actually a bit disorganized with tons of info that most people past English 101 should know, especially Technical Writers or those who describe themselves as being so. I don't recommend it.
The Handbook of Technical Writing, Seventh Edition.......2007-08-03
This is a great book. It is very useful as a reference for technical writing.
Great Book for technical Writing.......2007-06-08
A must for all those aspiring Technical Writers.
The layout is alphabetical, which makes finding items faster.
Clear instructions with plenty of samples.
A good reference, but needs more contemporary examples.......2007-04-20
Part style guide, word usage book, and techniques tutorial, this is a useful daily reference. It is clearly written, with lots of illustrations, cross-references, and examples that made it easy to understand each topic. However, the document types discussed need to be updated. The book focuses too much on correspondence related to job hunting and general business activity, materials that are better covered in other books. It contains too little discussion of the projects produced by technical writers today; especially lacking is discussion of online help and web content.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2007-03-18
This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.
I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.
My favorite chapters were:
1. Initial business concerns
2. Your business' structure
3. Business start-up details
5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
8. Obtaining the financing you need
The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.
I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.
Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.
I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.
When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; one for each state and the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!
