    Book Description

    Art and Architecture/Regional

An essential guide to Prairie School art and architecture in the Midwest.

Largely regarded as one of the most important movements of American architecture and design, the Prairie School helped move America into the modern age. Signaling a departure from nineteenth-century formality, its practitioners sought to create buildings that were organic and would facilitate a new, progressive way of life. This exhaustive guide to the treasures of the Prairie School at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts focuses not only on the museum's outstanding collection of early twentieth-century American design but also on the Institute's historic Purcell-Cutts house, one of the most significant examples of Prairie School architecture in the country. With its multitude of historic photographs, many never before published, Progressive Design in the Midwest is a unique combination of history, house tour, and museum guide.

Built by William Gray Purcell and George Grant Elmslie in Minneapolis in 1913, the Purcell-Cutts house features a buff-colored facade, nearly flat roof, and a revolutionary interior structured around an open floor plan, facilitating everyday living without the senseless division of space. Progressive Design in the Midwest documents the history of the house and its furnishings from the year it was built to the time it was donated to the museum, restored, and opened to the public in 1990.

The many objects in the Institute's Prairie school collection including works by Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, William Gray Purcell, and George Grant Elmslie, among others, are described in detail. Along with each piece is a list of relevant texts, exhibitions, and the historical background of the piece, as well as information about the designer.

With its multitude of historic photographs, many never before published, Progressive Design in the Midwest is a unique combination of history, house tour, and museum guide.

Jennifer Komar Olivarez is assistant curator of decorative arts, sculpture, and architecture at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

      Book Description

The best of middle school teaching is "learning by doing" and is interdisciplinary. This book ties it all together and offers a complete, innovative program, from vision, through planning, implementation, and assessment. The program is accomplished through the collaboration of the school library media specialist and the language arts teacher. Senator outlines ways in which they can collaboratively plan, teach, and assess units which use language arts as tools. She includes specific instructional programs, suggestions for staff development, examples of questions, organizers, and units for grades six through eight, ideas for creating schedules, and methods of working together to develop materials for instruction. This program reflects the restructuring movement in American education. It emphasizes process as well as content, uses authentic material, and stresses interdisciplinary learning and learning by doing. The first part deals with literature as a subject and offers many practical units for the library media specialist and the language arts teacher to use in collaboratively teaching students inquiry and a framework for literature. Armed with these tools, students are able to read, discuss, think, and write about more challenging and interesting literature. Senator offers many ideas for "extending" literature through creative dramatics, storytelling, booktalks, and book shares. The second half of the book shows how to plan interdisciplinary units so that students, through resource-based learning, may learn to use new technologies and information problem-solving. The work also includes some units for elementary and secondary schools. Because of its innovative methods and practical ideas it will be a boon to library media specialists, language arts and English teachers, reading specialists, and library schools and undergraduate and graduate schools of education.

School media centers should support the curriculum. Ideally, teachers and school media specialists should collaborate to make the best use of all the resources in the school media center. However, too often both groups work in isolation, failing to capitalize on the potential benefits students would reap from their collaboration. This book is a great starting point for anyone seeking to establish greater collaboration between language arts teachers and school media specialists. Senator outlines a program which includes school media specialists and language arts teachers planning, teaching, and assessing together, rather than in isolation. In addition to describing the program, Senator provides many useful sample resource units that can be used immediately by teachers and school media specialists. The book primarily focuses on the middle school level, but Senator also includes a chapter on how to adapt the program to elementary and secondary levels. Overall, it is a wonderful idea source! Teachers, librarians, and most importantly, students, should benefit from the use of a program like Senator's.

4 out of 5 stars Curriculum especially good for homeschoolers!!.......2003-03-03

From the back cover: "Jackdaws are a species of European crow. One of their favorite tricks is taking and hiding small bright objects. Each of the books in the Jackdaws series uses engaging activities with the same purpose in mind--to provide children, as they interact with literature, with a special insight or a nugget (memento) they can take and store as a jackdaw does its treasures." Also: "A collection of connection and extension activities for picture books appropriate for students in every grade from kindergarden through high school. Using 28 well-loved picture books from THE VERY BUSY SPIDER (Carle) and EATING THE ALPHABET (Ehlert) to MERRY-GO-ROUND: A BOOK ABOUT NOUNS (Heller) and THE FURRY NEWS: HOW TO MAKE A NEWSPAPER (Leedy), Carroll presents hudreds of enrichment activities spanning curriculum. Included are reading/writing connections, vocabulary and spelling lists, library activities, and extension activities in such areas as science, art, music, math, health, poetry, and social studies. A 'publishing' activity involves students in creating a classroom display of their work, tied to the theme of each book."

I am wholly impressed with Picture Books: Integrated Teaching of Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Viewing, and Thinking (Jackdaws Series, No 1) by Joyce Armstrong Carroll. It is full of interesting ideas and suggestions for teaching a variety of concepts to children from PreK-grade 12. I like that most of the Jackdaws are suitable for varying levels, so one can potentially teach two or more children at once!

This brings me to the first reason for assigning a just-less-than-perfect rating of 4 stars to this selection: I am left wishing that there were more Jackdaws specifically for the level at which my child is learning. (Some target PreK-2, for example, while others target grade 9-12.) I think it might better serve me personally if that was the case. Of course, I can just purchase the others in the Jackdaws series to get more...!

The second reason I gave this selection 4 rather than 5 stars is that it just isn't long enough! I was in want of even more of the great Jackdaws Carroll provides. If there were one Jackdaw for every school day, or at least a few per month, it would be awesome!

My final reason for assigning 4 stars: While this selection is certainly great for homeschooling families, the magic might be lost in a 'regular' school/classroom setting due to all the other 'stuff' teachers are required to do to teach, and because there is less flexibility in a 'regular' school schedule.

All-in-all, a great resource for anyone interested in reinforcing learning for children in a fun, engaging way!

Though the title is A Maritime Album, this book is less about the sea than about man's perceptions of it, as expressed through photographs. Authors John Szarkowski and Richard Benson have collected 100 photos taken between the years 1859 and 1956, all concerning some aspect of boats, boat building, and maritime life: the exuberance of a boat christening in 1900 and the eerie foreignness of arctic whalers in 1882, for example; shipwrecks and shipbuilders abound, and many of the photographs--those from the 19th century, especially--focus on the skin and bones of the trade, from the rotting shells of abandoned boats to the boilers and propellers of ships in the making.

The camera's subject might have been the sea, but the book is about so much more. Szarkowski, the former director of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art, has selected each of these photos as much for what they say about humanity's relationship to the sea as for the artistry of the pictures themselves. Richard Benson's commentary, meanwhile, speaks of technology, the futility of war, and the effects of mass production, as well as a wealth of information about maritime life. More than just a coffee-table book, A Maritime Album offers plenty of food for thought about the sea and the place it occupies in our lives and dreams.

              Book Description

This fascinating book culled from the archives of The Mariners Museum features 100 historical photographs depicting the complex, often deeply passionate relationships of mariners with their vessels and the sea. Selected and introduced by the preeminent photographic critic of our time, each photograph chronicles a fragment of the mariner`s experience over the past 200 years-shipbuilding, the making of a wooden skiff, commercial fishing and whaling, amateur sailing, deep-sea diving, naval encounters, and much more.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic imagery, in photos and text........2004-01-22

There is no question that the photographs in this work are wonderful, bringing "old salts" back to their environment and leaving landlubbers in awe.

However, the text, as indicated by fellow reviewers, can be considered a bit obscure if you are looking for cut-and-dry captions. It should be noted that one of the most appealing aspects of the book is that it does not simply apply a caption to an associated photo but rather tells the story behind it, providing details you simply would not be privy to from viewing the picture alone.

This wonderful book has been given as a holiday gift time and again in our family and has provided many a pleasurable moment flipping through the pages.

1 out of 5 stars Bizarre text ruins photographs.......2001-01-02

The great photographs cannot salvage the horrible text which rambles off into areas completely removed from the subject matter. Benson's commentary is... well... odd. At times you wonder exactly what it is he's talking about. And the few warship photographs exhibit a great deal of bias against all things military. This is particularly odd since the Mariner's Museum, which has attached its name to this drek, earned its reputation primarily on the preservation and salvage of warship artificats from the USS Monitor. Just plain weird, this book should be avoided at all costs expecially if you've ever been a sailor in uniform.

2 out of 5 stars Photographs are wonderful, the text disappointing........1999-02-13

I bought this book with great anticipation expecting a wonderful book on maritime photography. I am a fan of John Szarkowski and love his earlier work. While the choice of images is superb and the reproduction is wonderful, I was extremely disappointed by the text. Written by Richard Benson, it can only be characterized as bizarre, irrelavent and self indulgent. Opportunities to place the work in an historical or artistic context were often lost to flights of fantasy.

5 out of 5 stars Great coffee table book..........1998-01-27

I own a signed copy of this book, and it sits proudly on my coffee table. I have read it twice already, and each time I learn something more about a specific photograph which I had not realized before. A great collection of images, from the Civil War to imported VWs on the dock in Baltimore, MD.

`As the custodians of the UK's new single financial services regulator we at the FSA are keen to learn from the academic world. Indeed, we would like to encourage more academic research on the subject of financial regulation. So we welcome the increasing breadth and depth of work in this area, as reflected in these useful and thought provoking volumes.'

                            - Howard Davies, Financial Services Authority, London, UK This major four-volume collection will prove invaluable for lecturers, researchers and practitioners. The first volume covers the case for and against banking regulation, touching upon the design of an `optimal' regulatory framework. The second is concerned with deposit insurance, examining the arguments for and against its adoption and the problems encountered in its implementation. The material in the third volume deals with the vexed issue of capital adequacy assessment, including the roles played by capital and capital regulation and the G10 agreement. The final volume looks at the links between regulation and banking efficiency.

                                Book Description

How do two-career couples manage in a one-career world? It's about Time examines this mismatch between outdated scripts and the experiences of dual-earner couples. It broadens our understanding of occupational and family career strategies couples use in light of the widening gap between their real lives and the outdated work-hour and career-path roles, rules, and regulations they confront. It's about Time draws on the data from the Cornell Couples and Careers Study to demonstrate that:

•regardless of income, time is a scarce commodity in

dual-earner households. With two jobs, two commutes,

often long work hours, high job demands, business travel,

several cars, children, ailing relatives, and/or pets -

                                time is always an issue.

•time is built into jobs and career paths in ways that make

continuous full-time (40 or typically more hours a week) paid

work a fact of life in American society.

•the multiple strands of life--career, family and

personal--unfold over time. Spouses move through their life

courses in tandem, with early choices - to have children or

not, to work long hours or not, to switch jobs or not, to

relocate for his or her career or not--all having long-term

consequences for life quality and for gender inequality. The evidence from this book suggests that it is about time for the United States to confront the realities and needs of contemporary working couples and indeed, all members of the new workforce. To do so requires more than Band-Aid, short-term (and often short-sighted) policy remedies. It's about Time argues that it is essential to re-imagine and reconfigure work hours, workweeks, and occupational career paths in ways that address the widening gaps between the time needs and goals of workers and their families, at all ages and stages of the life course.
